I can confirm they're real planes, I live in Hampshire, Uk, and they filmed a lot of the air shots close to where I worked. I spent my breaks from work sat outside a coffee shop watching Spitfires fly past for a couple of weeks. Only after googling it, did I find out it was for an upcoming film (Dunkirk). This was around a year ago :)For info, the place where I saw the spitfires flying past was Lee on Solent, Portsmouth, UK.

Oh and btw "where's the bloody air force" is a great nod to actual events. The RAF did a hell of a job to stop the air onslaught happening over Dunkirk but they were rarely spotted by the troops on the ground ,or the sailors on the ships, as the fighters were trying to catch the german planes as far from the beaches as possible. During the whole evaquation barely a single english fighter could be seen from Dunkirk itself, leaving a very sour impression on the troops on spot that the air force was nowhere to be found and was not even trying to protect them (when in fact they were doing a sterling job at it).
Meanwhile the RAF (which lost quite a number of machines and pilots trying to hold on the german tide) felt as if their efforts and sacrifizes during the operation had received very little appreciation from the Army.
The whole thing caused a pretty big rift of bad feelings between Army and RAF that wasn't totally healed until 1944.

Il Solingo I _think_ they ended up destroying quarter scale drones or models but they did use 3 real Spitfires (the shot of them flying in formation near the end of the trailer is very likely real) and a real Spanish Buchon to stand in for the Bf 109s during the aerial scenes. Destroying a real restored WWII plane would not only be very expensive, you could argue it's also somewhat historically irresponsible.

There were a lot more than one of the "little ships" as they're known in the UK, over the course of the evacuation something like 700 civilian boats, some of them not much more than Thames pleasure cruisers, sailed across the English channel (often multiple times) to help with the evacuation. The boat featuring Mark Rylance and Cillian Murphy is probably just serving as a focus and example for all of them.
Incidentally, from the trailer I suspect that Rylance is playing a character inspired by Charles Lightoller who survived multiple shipwrecks over a long maritime career, probably the most notable being one RMS Titanic (which people may have heard of ;) - he was the 2nd officer, one of the first sailors to start lowering lifeboats and among the very last to leave his post (twenty minutes before the ship sank he was ordered to board a lifeboat and is reputed to have replied "Not damn likely" then carried on helping passengers until the end, when he was apparently actually pulled under with the ship but the shockwave from an exploding boiler pushed him back to the surface). After retiring, at the age of 66, he along with his son and a young sea cadet took his private yacht over the channel as one of the little ships to help with the evacuation at Dunkirk (i'll leave it there to avoid "spoilers" (?) just in case the character is actually him, rather than just based on him). Suffice it to say, the bloke was a bit of a bloody legend.

the german tanks had to wait for the infantry to catch up to be effective also some of the ground around dunkirk is bad for tanks (marshland) this is the main reason for the time that allowed the escape of so many men.
and for anyone wondering about the realism of a clearly marked hospital ship being dived bombed by nazi bombers and/or being topedoed, my grandfather was at dunkirk wounded in a clearly marked hospital tent which was then bombed and resulted in injuries so severe that his own mother did not recognise him after he was medically discharged from the army....many of his mates died fighting in france, before the dunkirk events.

The journey from Dover in England, to Dunkirk in France, crossed the Channel and was a distance of less than 100 kilometres, though they didn't go in a straight line. The evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force (really a multinational force - mainly British, but also Canadian, Polish, associated French troops, and more I'm forgetting) took several days.

The BEF consisted of 90% British forces and 10% Canadian (Britain tried to keep commonwealth countries not being invaded out of the war from start to finish, but nearly all commonwealth countries government's and it's people volunteered to help). The BEF had regrouped and retreated with the home forces of France, Belgium and the Netherlands for the defence of Dunkirk. Whilst Most of France's forces stayed to cover the retreat (With Some Dutch and British)... All countries were aboard the evacuation boats, with Britain obviously more keen on getting it's own forces home to defend Britain in the upcoming attack.
France, Belgium and Netherlands were not part of the BEF... they were already there defending their homes/countries.

One of the most controversial and strange events during the timeline of WW2. One one side Brits managed to get stuck in such a stupidly large number due to a fast French surrender. On German side for some reason they stopped while having a massive advantage against a depleted force of 400,000 men.
So much theoretical shit has been thrown around if Germany was trying to win favor with England not assaulting those troops.

It would have helped if you had read a little about Dunkirk and learned the HUNDREDS of civilian men and women who took their boats to rescue the stranded soldiers. Some had never sailed out to sea, just pleasure boats. There were fishermen, and all kinds of occupations who just lived normal lives until that day. Many of the civilians died in their attempts to save the troops. They weren't equipped with guns or any kind of defence, they carried nothing, just their bravery and their will to save lives. Its not a joke that one boat went back and forth. The boat journey to Dunkirk to the UK was miles of hell exposed to the slaughtering Germans. This is a film about real events and real people, not fiction

Why are so many commenters surprised that American schools don't focus on the "Miracle at Dunkirk" as it's called? Every country tends to focus more on it's own contributions to the war, as well as the major events that occurred in the theater that it was involved in. American schools discuss things that were happening at home (still dealing with the Great Depression repercussions) as well as the war in the Pacific at that point, since that was where America's main focus was at the time. I'd be willing to lay some pretty good odds that most Brits don't have a clue of what Peleliu is, or even Guadalcanal...both of which were very big parts of the Pacific theater of WW2 (regardless of armchair general opinions, Peleliu was a massive battle/siege with a ridiculously high casualty rate, it's overall importance strategically is a completely separate debate). Yes, it would be nice if they would put more focus on it...it'd also be nice if they'd actually mention Korea, or Vietnam for that matter. But with the way that American public schools are going, pretty soon they won't be able to cover any topic of WW2, or WW1, or Vietnam, or anything else in history because they're afraid it's going to offend somebody.

In case you guys were curious, all the clips from the planes looked real because they were. They rigged the inside of those planes with IMAX cameras and the crashed planes were perfect replicas they built to be shot down and destroyed in order to gain the best shots.

Hitler didn't take Dunkirk because there main panzer units were beat up and needed repair , in the early days of the war the German army didn't do large operations without there tanks , so Hitler ordered the Luftwaffe to bomb and strafe the beaches and boats , instead of risking his precious panzers .

the UK had been fighting for years and this Dunkirk was the most famous event of the struggle to keep going on alone

If I remember my WW2 history class in high school the reason Hitler didn't wipe out the forces at Dunkirk were two fold: 1) He was still dealing with the French Army since I don't think France had officially surrender or if they did some commanders still fought on and 2) Hitler hoped to broker a peace with Britain after defeating France and Britain so soundly. My memory is a little vague but that is the reasoning why Dunkirk was allowed to happen

    • @JiggleWiggleBagel

The German's could've easily won the Battle of Dunkirk, they could've just swept over the trapped forces blitzkreig style. Further more, it's a myth that Hitler ordered a halt order with the Dunkirk Advance, it was the British and french counterattack at Arras that gave the German Commanders at the time pause.
Another thing of note is, Germany WASN'T split at the time, Operation Barbarossa (Invasion of the USSR) Began sometime in 1941, Dunkirk Evacuation was in 1940s

    • @vkdeen7570
      @vkdeen7570 7 лет назад +10

MuggleCheese correct it was a german commander that ordered the halt because he lost a lot of tank units at arras. The Germans wanted to save their tanks because there were pockets of french resistance and it wud be a lil risky for the tanks on softer ground without enough infantry support. Hitler and his generals figured an evacuation on that scale was impossible and they had time to bolster their tank divisions with infantry then move forward. they also believed the luftwaffe (german air force) wud be able to really do and lot of the work from the air, again saving ground armour. the german divisions wud then swoop in later and kill and capture whatever the luftwaffe left. if the germans cud kill or capture a signifcant % of the men then britain wud have no choice but to cut a deal, which wud then lead to france completely folding and a total german victory. This was in fact quite sound thinking as no one cud of predicted the speed and amount of ppl evacuated and that civil boats wud be helping. nor cud they have predicted bad weather and an incedible performance from the raf + french air resistence vs the luftwaffe. so only after the fact does it become apparent that it's a tactical error.

Also Hitler never wanted to fight against Britain. (it was Britain and France who declared war on Germany) he believed in the idea that Germany while Germany should control Europe Britain should be its naval superpower ally. therefore he did not want to destroy their military, he wanted them to surrender and broker a truce which would lead to a alliance. Just like with ww1 the germans had a deep connections to the English.

I'm pretty sure the terrain surrounding Dunkirk would've been a drawback for the German armor divisions which were on a roll at the time of the war so they decided to wait and repair their armor, and the German Air Force was ridiculously efficient at the time so they had hoped to rout them from the air as the the allies couldn't match their air superiority, however the British had better air fighters though which I think the movie will highlight.

Not really, Allied forces were in shambles completely destroyed and in the run. It was the big opportunity to completely destroy an army of 400000 Brits, Hitler had him cornered. Rommel could have made them surrender in a moment, Hitler refused and until today nobody knows why? There is speculations but no one really knows for sure.

I really hate it when people just focus on the actors instead of the stories. Especially in this movie, which tells an immensely submersive and intense story and people should respect what these soldiers have gone through and not making comparisons to films like Saving Private Ryan because Dunkirk is on a whole new level.

It's World War 2 not 1. And this really happened. Watch "Oversimplified" WW2 part 1 to see how the British and the French ended up in this predicament.
Nolans love of practical effects shows how much more realistic movies are when used instead of CGI.
That's why older movies are better than today's garbage.
And let's face it today's films are just men in capes, Martin Scorsacee pointed this out...

The BEF escaped because the counterattack at Arras, whilst a failure, caught the German tanks unprepared as they had no infantry to cover their flanks. The German panzers had moved too far ahead of the German soldiers and had no proper defence against the counterattack at Arras.
We know the BEF was not allowed to escape because of a kinship between the Germanic nations as the order to halt the advance didn't even originate with Hitler, it originated with the leader of the Panzer division attacked at Arras.
We know that they wasn't even meant to escape as the Luftwaffe was attacking soldiers on the beaches and sinking ships that were carrying soldiers home.
The German line was thin, unprepared, and the communication lines required for massacring 400k men was not in place.

1940 and Dunkirk was important to get the British army home from the shores of France if no other reason than for the army to be rescued, if that army had been captured or killed then it would have given Hitler more reason to invade Britain which was his intention anyway. The VITAL event came just after in the air battle known as the Battle of Britain and had the R.A.F. been defeated then Germany would have had air superiority and the very real possibility that Britain would have lost and German occupation would follow and we would be looking at a very different world today. As a matter of interest they were real spitfires strangely there are quite a few spitfires around but only one which actually fought in the Battle of Britain which I have seen at air shows. The distance between the South coast of England and Dunkirk in France is around 26 miles and can indeed be seen on a clear day.
