Very touching. I run a web development company and 3 of my best software engineers live in apartments that were destroyed in the blast. The only saving grace is they each have a Chromebook (that were not damaged) for when they need to work outside of their apartments so I am still able to give them paid work. The nearest decent Internet cafe is about 20 minutes from the disaster center point. Our team is small and these 3 developers have worked for my company since 2008 and to be sincere I feel guilty because our whole company depends on these guys to work or we all do not make money. Our world is so beautiful and interconnected, and it saddens me greatly to see so much fear, hate, bigotry and greed running the world today.
Normal people would, because well, what the F do you want to discuss about it? ....... not much to say about it huh? There is your clue to ignore something, not every detail you notice is significant or note worthy. Anyway.... the vehicle owners name needed to be displayed on the outside of the vehicle if they wanted the government to take them away. So the destroyed car owners last name was mood. Whoopty do.
Roy Rizk “mood” alone does not reflect any mood in particular so that obviously is not true. The owners names are displayed on the majority of the cars near the incident.

We shouldn't forget that Libanon is one of the more modern countries in the middle east, with a high percentage of people with higher education, a higher safety and living standard etc. If the west really is interested in peacifiying the middle east Libanon cannot become a second Syria.
The west wants middle east to become shepherds in the desert like the old days, so they can enslave them and take the resources for themselves. The western governments I mean, many westerners still have good hearts.
My country has suffered enough problems and then the explosion came upon us . Thank God I wasn't near and I am praying to my Lebanese brothers and sisters.
This is not unique to Lebanon. There are investors cold calling Americans right now to take advantage of the financial crisis. Where I live, although many people are losing their homes, there is still a housing shortage caused by investors buying properties to rent out. In the last month 3 houses on my block have been bought by investors. Meanwhile my mother who is retiring and needs to be closer to me can't find a home to buy. There needs to be more regulation of these things for the average citizen's financial stability but I fear we may be too late.
No ngos for repairing houses. Just ngos for the hospitals and finding shelter for those affected. Aswell as providing resources such as food. Check out this link. helplebanon.carrd.co/
Finally Vice is starting to return to it's former glory. It was definitely on a downward swing for a few years there, but I've noticed an uptick in quality this past year.
That place looks like it could be beautiful, what a shame that just a handful of greedy people can harm and cause so much depression. How do you get "hired" to help rebuild? That was the best part of the video seeing that older women so happy that she can stay in her home just from a few people putting in windows and cleaning up. Those people helping to rebuild and supply aid are heroes. Must be a really fulfilling job.
This shows how resilient and strong the Lebanese people are. Beirut has been demolished to the ground time and time again, over 6 times in history which gave the city the name the city that never surrenders. Lebanese are helping all over the world and Beirut will be built again soon stronger than ever by the hearts and the wills of the Lebanese people ♥️
But what are the offers are owners being given? There’s a big difference from say 75% or 20% of the previous value, this ought to be mentioned. I’m sure there is considerable investment required to put these properties back into reasonable liveable condition and the value would naturally be lower anyway. There must be considerable risk to live or own/buy properties too. What about insurance, there is no mention of this?
Thank you for doing this, VICE. I've been worried about Solidere or a similar predatory organization taking advantage of average residents when they are vulnerable and replacing their homes with new buildings only the filthy rich will be able to afford. I'm glad to hear other people are preparing to fight back.
My roommate and I watched this story and neither of us have any idea what is going on because we couldn't hear the narrator or the experts over different audio (music, footage clips, gunfire). There was a lot of talk of corruption. So roommate and I tried to piece it out. Apparently the government created a corporation that did... something... with real estate maybe? And then an important politician died. Can't tell if he was assassinated or mysterious circumstances. There was a map that looked informative but I don't know what it meant. Please reupload with subtitles.
isn't there structural damage that can't be fixed by engineers though? like, without demolishing the whole building and starting over? skyscrapers are like a house of cards, you can't just take one out and put another one in. i wonder if these buildings will remain safe for their inhabitants? still, i completely agree, don't give a single lira to the lebanese government.
@Sara Ford how could a country just go to waste like this ? they must have primary income based on something right ? The govt. there has to have a lot of money stored.

Where do you go when the house is in rubbles? I guess I would go take a nap in the rubbles and figure it out another day. And then I guess I'd just die.
"preyed on" is an absurd characterization. This is how a market economy works. If they can't afford to rebuild then what good is the real estate to them? It's better for everyone that real estate developers redevelop the destroyed real estate.
So weird for SO much panic to happen to SO many people at the same time. It's like, a half second disaster, that will have years of impact. Decades. Lifetimes! All from a split second release of energy. Ot course that's only one way to look at it. It could be seen as a looong series of mistakes also.
here in the uk..the trend in the last decade is closing down mental health facilitys...leaving them dormant a year..then selling off to the highest construction bidders to be transformed into unobtainable flats ..houses for the wealthy...leaving those housed and cared for out on the streets or cheap hostels and bedsits....when did we as a so called society replace human needs for huge cash?..i dont live in fairttale land and understand there has always been wealth disparity but now seems to be so blatent and open its become the " new " normal.
Increasing housing supply, by building high density housing is good, but not if the net result is pricing out the people that lived there in the first place.
Additionally the Lebanese lira (pegged against the dollar) has been massively unstable and inflated as of recently and almost equally fragile are the banks in Lebanon. So for buyers to offer paying someone in whatever currency they like, may be the best of an awful situation for many people there

Government has abandoned people all over the world. People helping each other on the local level is a start toward taking back our power.
My heart goes out to the people and their helpers in Beirut!
Not my government lol. My Goverment is ok i guess and sometimes i think the government a bit too much in helping the people (not because they are benevolent or what but just because they want to be re elected in the next election). Plus My country is a Constitutional Monarchy and the monarch have certain Constitutional power to keep the government of the day in check always. and if the government of the day try to be funny the people can always turn to the monarch to straighten things out.
Talhah Abdullah and what country is that?

Bad judgement and corruption ended up killing hundreds and injuring thousands on a terrifying day. What do you think about it?
Are we going to ignore the destroyed car with mood spray painted on it? 6:47

The new government should be of entirely new people and move away from central banking
The west wants middle east to become shepherds in the desert like the old days, so they can enslave them and take the resources for themselves. The western governments I mean, many westerners still have good hearts.
glad to hear there are still some decent souls left who are caring for eachother

Its already terrible and only getting worse. The greedy will never be satisfied.
Does anyone have links to NGO that are helping with repairs?
No ngos for repairing houses. Just ngos for the hospitals and finding shelter for those affected. Aswell as providing resources such as food. Check out this link. helplebanon.carrd.co/

"the time to buy is when there's blood in the streets."
Lebanese are helping all over the world and Beirut will be built again soon stronger than ever by the hearts and the wills of the Lebanese people ♥️
Amazing how the community comes together.
Vultures always arrive to capitalize on misfortune.
Hey Vice! Could you possibly link a couple of trusted Lebanon NGO's in the description?
But what are the offers are owners being given? There’s a big difference from say 75% or 20% of the previous value, this ought to be mentioned.
I’m sure there is considerable investment required to put these properties back into reasonable liveable condition and the value would naturally be lower anyway. There must be considerable risk to live or own/buy properties too.
What about insurance, there is no mention of this?
Just when you thought 2020 couldn’t get any worse 😔 I’m going to keep on praying 🙏🏾
Y’all been praying for over 2000 years 🙄 white Jesus is still sleeping like god during slavery
Good point
The audio mixing is straight garbage. The levels are way too low for the narrator.
I had the same problem. Just turn on the captions sometimes it’s not accurate but better than not being able to hear important dialogue

corrupt gov caused a bomb because they stored it in the port. people house destroyed. ngo helping gov not. easy
Side note: The ceilings in Lebanon all seem really high. I like that. The literal ceilings that is. The figurative ones seem very low.
Never let a perfectly good tragedy go to waste.
isn't there structural damage that can't be fixed by engineers though? like, without demolishing the whole building and starting over? skyscrapers are like a house of cards, you can't just take one out and put another one in. i wonder if these buildings will remain safe for their inhabitants?
still, i completely agree, don't give a single lira to the lebanese government.
@Sara Ford how could a country just go to waste like this ? they must have primary income based on something right ? The govt. there has to have a lot of money stored.

Did the owners of these condo buildings not have insurance?
"preyed on" is an absurd characterization. This is how a market economy works. If they can't afford to rebuild then what good is the real estate to them? It's better for everyone that real estate developers redevelop the destroyed real estate.
Just fix the windows
What is the musical piece in the closing credits?
Increasing housing supply, by building high density housing is good, but not if the net result is pricing out the people that lived there in the first place.

Additionally the Lebanese lira (pegged against the dollar) has been massively unstable and inflated as of recently and almost equally fragile are the banks in Lebanon. So for buyers to offer paying someone in whatever currency they like, may be the best of an awful situation for many people there
