Elrond is looking at losing his daughter FOREVER. Which is something elves do not take lightly. He already lost is twin brother, both being half-elven and because of this they had the ability to choose elf or man. Elrond chose to remain elf, while Elros chose to be man. Upon death, the fate of elves and man are different, so he will NEVER see her again if she stays and becomes mortal.
Man lost his Father, mother, and twin brother for good, he can’t bear to lose his daughter. When you know Elrond’s backstory you can’t help to feel sorry for him in this situation.
@@NastyCupid yeah, they're hunting orcs to avenge their mother WHO WAS SO TRAUMATIZED BY WHAT THEY DID TO HER SHE HAD TO GO TO VALINOR. It's just tragedy upon tragedy, and Elrond "kind as summer" Peredhel is still a beacon of hope all through all this. God I love him.
@@nourriadh6976this is why watching and or reacting to Elronds full story by Tolkien Untangled is key. This guys mastery of prose makes the video even better. Tolkien would be proud. ❤
It always surprises me when people critique Elrond about being against the whole Aragorn thing. Imagine your daughter telling you she'll never see you again because she's going on vacation with the dude she met a few days ago. She's never returning and he'll die in a week anyway. Would you not have some criticism? Elrond is completely right in his assessment, it's not manipulative, it's the truth, he's asked to give up his daughter for all time so she can have a moment of happiness followed by an eternity of pain. Any parent would try to spare their child from that.
Sam's speech always makes me emotional, even moreso when you remember that Tolkien was a veteran of WWI, which had some of the most awful, miserable brutality that's ever been unleashed on the world. He saw how terrible things could be, but instead of being a story of despair, his story is one of holding onto hope in times of darkness, belief in the goodness of the world, standing by your friends, and opposing the evils of the world.
Tolkien loved nature and the british countryside. He hated the way industrialisation had ruined it, in his opinion. Saruman was shown in the first film to say "the forests will burn in the fires of industry" for that specific reason. So when the Ents march against him during this film , the music that accompanies the scene is called "Nature's reclamation", a pretty fitting title
"Forty-two? Oh, that's not bad for a pointy-eared elvish princeling. Hmph! I myself am sitting pretty on forty-THREE." "Forty-three." "He was already dead!" "He was twitching." "He was TWITCHING because he's got my axe EMBEDDED IN HIS NERVOUS SYSTEM!" Fun Fact: They couldn't recruit enough men in the six foot height area to play Uruk-hai, so men from five foot high were cast as well. They were affectionately nicknamed the Uruk-Low. I Survived Helm's Deep Fact: The battle at Helm's Deep was edited down from twenty hours of footage, shot over a four month period with the rain machine battering down on the cast. Not CGI Fact: On the wall of Helm's Deep during the battle, a one-eyed warrior turns to the camera, revealing his scarred empty socket. The performer who played him showed up as an extra, wearing an eye patch. Director Sir Peter Jackson politely asked to see what was under the patch, and then inquired if the gentleman would be interested in appearing in the movie sans eye patch. The gentleman was reluctant at first, and quite self-conscious, but afterward, said the experience had made him more comfortable with his condition.
The horse that Aragorn calmed in the stables was named Brego after the second king of Rohan. Brego was once the horse of Éowyn's cousin, Théodred. The horse became crazy, or at least that's what people thought... Aragorn was able to calm him and then he set him free. Later, after falling from a cliff, it was Brego that came to him and saved him. Fun fact: Aragorn became so attached to him that he bought him (and two others) from his owner and took him home where he lived until the end of his life which was I believe in December of 2020
To give you an idea as to how great the next movie is: It shares the record with Titanic and Ben-Hur for most Oscars won, and is the only movie in Oscars history to achieve a clean sweep; winning in every category in which it was nominated.
Although to be fair, that was mainly a reaction/reckoning of medals for all three movies. Obviously Return of the King was a great ending to a basically perfect trilogy, and it was the recognition of the trilogy as a whole and to make up for the earlier movies getting snubbed so hard. Six total Oscar wins for the first two movies combined. Then 11 wins for Return of the King. It sure as hell doesn't mean The Return of the King is somehow the best of all the movies. It's just that the quality stayed consistent throughout the whole trilogy, and it finally got recognition for just how amazing such a thing is to pull off. Pick any of them as your favorite and it's not like you'd be wrong no matter what you chose. In reality they're all one long movie, the same way that The Lord of the Rings was supposed to be one long book until the publisher made sure it was split into three. Not that The Lord of the Rings was ever going to be possible as a single movie, since it would have either left infinite parts out or been a 10+ hour movie that just isn't viable for people to go to the theater and watch in one sitting. But in reality it was just one really long movie, filmed all at the same time due to New Line's smart decision that they HAD to be three movies whereas Miramax said that even TWO movies was one too many. Anyway, just needed to clear up the whole academy awards thing. It was a recognition of Lord of the Rings, NOT Return of the King in particular. But obviously they couldn't go back and give the proper awards to the previous films at that point, so of course this final installment swept the Oscars.
Sam has the best lines on each movie. "I made a promise, Mr Frodo. A promise. 'Don’t you leave him Samwise Gamgee.' And I don’t mean to. I don’t mean to." "That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it’s worth fighting for." "Come on, Mr. Frodo. I can't carry it for you... but I can carry you!"
Sam's speech will always be one of the best speeches ever! I see that he's having a hard time believing that The Return of the King is even more Epic!!!! Can't wait!
The fact that this trilogy never picked up any acting Oscars (especially for Ian McKellen in Fellowship and Sean Astin in Two Towers) will always bother me.
@rikk319 The Academy said Andy Serkis wasn't eligible for TTT as he was never visible- they classed it as a voice performance despite him being on set doing everything Gollum did. The mind boggles.
"No parent should ever have to bury their child." - Théoden That moment almost always get me very emotional. You could feel the anguish and guilt Théoden must had been feeling after burying his only son. I felt so bad for him but at least he had Gandalf there with him and telling him not to blame himself for his son's death. Despite this loss, he's still a loyal and good king to his people. He's one of the best characters in the series.
@@MatthewJamesKalasky Tolkien did a great compare and contrast over monarchs when it came to Theoden and Denethor. Both lose a son, both are faced with similar circumstances, but Theoden rises to the occasion while Denethor falls to despair. Part of it is the hubris of pride--Theoden accepted the help and wise counsel of Gandalf, while Denethor spurned it.
Just like Tolkien who was keenly interested in Finnish and used it partly in making the elven speech, Sir Christopher Lee knew some Finnish among other languages and was always friendly towards us. Actually, by detour, he was able to act in his films because of us. During war years he felt so strongly about the Finnish War against the Soviet Union, he and other Brits volunteered to fight by our side on the front lines. They insisted on joining the very front battles at its worst - compared to them Helm's Deep was a minor skirmish - but sensibly, knowing it would be curtains to him and his friends in the snow, the Finnish commanders only put them near the lines. So he lived to fight another day and act. Actually, he wanted Gandalf's role, but was just too old then.
I've watched far too many LOTR reactions and your genuine enthusiasm for this story, along with your intuition and understanding, makes this possibly the best one I've seen. Can't wait to see what you think about ROTK.
Some context for Elrond and how much Arwen is giving up / Aragorn’s age: in a past age Half-Elves were gifted with a choice - to be counted among Elves or Men. Those like Elrond who chose to be Elves were immortal, had a place in The Undying Lands(basically paradise) and passed this choice onto their descendants. Those who chose to be Men (Like Elrond’s brother Elros; who is an ancestor of Aragorn) gave up all of this in favour of long mortal lives. Elves aren’t allowed to leave the world, even in death (like Gandalf) Elves don’t know mortality, if Arwen chooses mortality Elrond will never see her again, she’s also giving up the gifts given to Elves for all of her descendants. This is also why Aragorn is built different, he literally descends from “greater Men”
What? Not all half elves get this choice. Only those who are of the Peredhel bloodline do. And if you have the choice to take the gift of men your children DON'T get the choice.
Personally, Two Towers is my favourite. Fellowship has my favourite character (Boromir), Return of the King makes me cry the most, but Two Towers is my favourite in terms of plot development and emotional beats. Return of the King certainly is epic, though - I can't wait to see your reaction to it! Thanks for taking us on this journey!
At 9:53 you say "These look like much, much bigger versions of an elephant." Tolkien writes "Fear and wonder, maybe, enlarged him in the hobbit's eyes, but the Mumak of Harad was indeed a beast of vast bulk, and the like of him does not walk now in Middle-earth; his kin that live still in latter days are but memories of his girth and majesty."
I'm so glad to see that you really are enjoying these. I love when I get to introduce people to the movies and the books, of which you should read after to answer a lot of your questions. It also gives you a mental picture for all the additional stories left out because there is so much.
Half the fun of watching new people react to LOTR is seeing them get to experience the awesome world building. The other half is seeing them figure out that Sam is the true hero of the story! Even if he's just a humble gardener and one a lot of new people don't remember hearing about in pop culture, Sam steals everyone's heart as he carries the whole story on his back!
I love Sam, but I can`t agree with you when you say that he is "The True Hero". Frodo is the one who has to carry the burden of the ring. When Sam keeps the ring, for just a short while, he has difficulties letting go of it. In my opinion, they are both the heroes.
@@lechat8533Spoiler Sam lets it go almost immediately because all the ring could tempt him with is an everlasting garden, and he knew he had as much as he wanted already. I don't know where you got that he struggled at all. He's quite literally the only one to give it up easily.
@@chadwood4412 His inner struggle was short and shown subtly, but it was obvious. While, in the beginning, Frodo picked it up, held it, and was willing to give it to Gandalf and even Galadriel.
@@lechat8533 spoiler Frodo wasn't in mordor, Sam was........ Also, while he offered it, we never got to see if he would hand it over. Saying it is one thing, doing is another.
@@chadwood4412 The Ring's power on one grows with time. Sam only had it for a day or so, and still struggled to give it away. The truly stunning act of willingly giving up the Ring was when Bilbo left it for Frodo after his Birthday Party (with Gandalf's help, of course). Bilbo had possessed it for 60 years, and even used it now and then. I agree, Sam is fantastic. And the quest would have failed without him. But Frodo is the true hero. In Rivendell, Frodo willingly agreed to take the Ring and embark on the Quest of Mt. Doom, even after being stabbed by the Ringwraith on Weathertop - while Sam was set to go home. Frodo was stabbed twice, poisoned, and had his mind, body, and soul severely scarred by the One Ring ("I can see Him - Sauron - with my waking eyes!"). Sam looked out for Frodo, as he promised, and helped a wounded Frodo throughout the Quest. Both are heroes. But if Frodo had not agreed to take the One Ring and face all the horrors that that entailed, Middle Earth would have been lost.
At 21:00, don't be too hard on Elrond--when you're potentially immortal, it colors your view of mortality. Elrond is well over 6,000 years old (Arwen is nearly 2,800), so her choice has big implications. In the book, while the Company are floating down the Great River in their little boats in FOTR, Legolas muses on this difference: "Nay, time does not tarry ever...but change and growth is not in all things and places alike. For the Elves the world moves, and it moves both very swift and very slow. Swift, because they themselves change little and all else fleets by: it is a grief to them. Slow, because they do not count the running years, not for themselves. The passing seasons are but ripples ever repeated in the long long stream. Yet beneath the Sun all things must wear to an end at last."
Fun fact: Christopher Lee was the only actor in the film to meet J.R.R Tolkien, and due to him being in the secret service during WW2, he had to tell Peter Jackson how to do a certain scene in the next film
Wow, it's so awesome seeing this video on a Friday! I love how you get so into it and emotional in your reactions, Cole! It makes me happy to see you enjoying this adventure! Can't wait for the reaction to the last movie. 🎉
Elrond was very reluctant to let Arwen stay in Middle-Earth and give up her immortality for the sake of mankind, which makes sense as an immortal father, but also there is another very important reason. The ability of choosing between immortality or not was not a regular thing in the first place. It was given to his family long ago because of the sacrifice his father had made ages ago, in order to save Middle-Earth from Sauron's superior, Morgoth. After this Elrond and his brother Elros were honored and also given the chance to chose between mortality and immortality, Elrond remained an immortal Elf lord, Elros chose mortality and became the leader of the Numenoreans, the line of which Aragorn is descended from and why he has prolonged life. (By the time he was born though, he is like 30 generations removed from being Elrond's nephew, so marrying Arwen is ok 🤣). So Elrond, already has lost his brother to mankind's mortality.
Wait till you see the next movie. It tied for the most Oscars ever awarded to a movie - 11. A word to the wise: keep some Kleenex handy. Like a whole box, bro. And enjoy it. There’s only one “first time I ever watched (or read) “The Lord of the Rings.” Few ever forget it. Great reaction!
Such a great reaction! The best part of all three films is Sam. If people on planet Earth could live with such a beautiful heart, I think we could make it. I am a Star Wars fan, not Star Trek until the reboots, directed by J.J. Abrahams, came out I wasn’t too big of a fan of the movies. Have you seen them? The point is, Karl Urbane plays Dr. McCoy “Bones”. Leonard Nimoy saw him on set and heard him do his imitation of Bones and he started crying. He said Karl looks and sounds so much like DeForest Kelley, it was if DeForest had came back to life. Having watched the series in the 60’s & 70’s, I agree. It is scary how well Karl has done! The actress who plays Aeowyn (the blond niece of the king,) was the original mother of Annabelle in “Annabelle: Creation”. It’s a prequel to all of them. She was wonderful!
I think you did the split into 2 videos perfectly!!! The voice on off at the end wrapping up with some spoilers and jokes really motivated me to go to part 2. Same for the part 2 beginning. 🎉🎉🎉
I was standing up cooking when they had the big elvish conversation so I REALY appreciate you doing the monolog reading the subtitles ^_^ super helpful lol
Imagine seeing this in theatres back when it was first released. There'd never been anything like the Battle Of Helm's Deep before. I was lucky enough to see the original Star Wars on the big screen back in 1977 and this movie hit me the same way as Star Wars did back then in terms of making me rethink what movies could do.
Wasn't SW amazing in 77? I was visiting my sister in Phoenix and they had one of the few sver.screens with both a wrap around screen and surround sound with massive speakers- and tilting back chairs, super rare then! Literally felt like we were inside the movie from the first moment. I did not get to see LotR in the theatre, life was too crowded with work and Mom time, but at least the first time watching it was on a huge TV with a poll sound system... and the 12 hours of additional dvds were there to study and read inserts on too.
@@seaneendelong8065 Got to see both Star Wars and the LotR films in the theater. Crown jewels of their respective genres. I think I saw the OG Star Wars and Empire Strikes back maybe 3 times each back then, before my family owned a VCR. While Star Wars was awesome on screen, though, something about the LotR films is so grandiose and epic...they're different films and great in their own ways.
I didn't see this one, but saw rotk in a theatre. Bit my nails down to the quick in stress but loved every second of it. One of my fave movie experiences from my youth
Fun fact: The Chain mail worn by the actors was hand made by two artisans, to honour them, PJ cast them as the king's assistants dressing him up before he leaves for the Charge towards the end.
At 15:00, the animals attacking the people are called Wargs. In the book, they are intelligent werewolves; PJ&Co. have turned them into sort of a cross between a hyena and a grizzly bear. This entire part of the movie isn't in the book, but in FOTR after their failure to cross the Pass of Caradhras (called the Redhorn Gate in the book), the Company is attacked by a pack of Wargs at night. They take refuge on top of a hill, and Gandalf drives them off by setting the trees on fire. In the morning, there is no sign of Warg bodies, and Legolas picks up his arrows undamaged. In the book, it was this Warg attack that convinced the Company to go through the Mines of Moria.
At 23:40, this scene between Boromir, Faramir, and their father Denethor is the principal reason that Tolkien nerds prefer the Extended version of the movie, as the scene was cut from the Theatrical version. It goes a long way to explaining Boromir's actions in FOTR.
And it gets better. Great reaction. In the book, Gandalf describes his fight with the Balrog of Morgoth saying “ Ever I slew him and ever we fell.” To me, that line was epic. If they had 4 more 4 hour movies, I think there would still be some things left out.
I've seen these movies at least 50 times, and have watched just as many reactions, and yet still that entire ending is just a solid 20 minutes of me crying. Honestly the entire movie is, but with Theodens last stand, then Gandalf and Eomer riding up, the ents releasing the damn, and then to top it off with Sams speech. It's so insanely well done my emotions just can't handle it.
Sean Astin with 2 great speeches in movies and this one is even better than the one in The Goonies when he was a kid. Of course it's no wonder he's such a great actor with parents like Patty Duke (Patty Duke Show & Valley Of The Dolls) and John Astin (The Addams Family tv show). First movie I remember seeing Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) in was Hidalgo. Yes. That's Brego ths horse he told Eowyn to set free because he'd seen enough of war. (Viggo bought the horse and took it home with him. He also bought the horse Arwen's stunt double rode in the first movie and gave it to her if I remember right.) Hard enough learning all your lines for these movies but the fact that they learned to speak lines in the Elvin language that Tolkien created is just amazing.
So interesting how an actor will repeat themes and roles throughout their career. Like a director sees them do something well in another movie and before you know it they're doing the same thing but on this grand, epic scale.
The extended edition DVDs came with a lot of bonus content talking about the making of the movies etc, and in there they talked about the huge difficulty to get horses to charge downhill, let alone at people holding lances, which horses realize are deadly and they won't do it. They faked that out with camera angles etc and the lances were not actually pointed correctly either. So much good work to make so many great battle scenes.
Next The Lord Of The Ring Extended Edition Of The Return Of The King Extended Edition Trilogy The Hobbit Extended Edition Of The Adventures Of Bilbo Baggin: (1) An Unexpected Journey Extended Edition (2) The Desolation Of Smaug Extended Edition (3) The Battle Five Armie Extended Edition
I am back from vacation! 👏👏 Wonderful reaction video! This one is the most exciting parts of the book, I say book, it is broken down into six volumes, three books and the extensive appendices in the back of the book full of background material. You're not the only one Cole, to elicit emotions with Sam's speech near the end and I am glad to see your reaction is the same as most of ours too. He's the best really, I mean it. (Samwise the brave) It will get even more exciting in the third installment of this story, and correct me if I am mistaken, I feel you are already beginning to understand why this is one of the most beloved masterpiece stories ever existed. I am anxious to see your reaction to LOTR Return of the King, and what you think of this movie series. I enjoyed watching this reaction video. Until next time, peace. ☮
Loving these reactions, Cole. Also, never be ashamed to cry openly at LotR. It's kind of mandatory haha. In fact, I've seen the third movie take out the toughest of people! Great foreshadowing there about Grima making things worse in the future. Aragorn took his noble sensibilities a little too far there. So the story with Aragorn's age is that he's from a special race of men. (Numenorean/Dunedain). Long ago, Lord Elrond (agent smith) had an identical twin brother. Long story, but because they had an elf mother and a human father, they were given a choice by the gods on whether they wished to live as elves or humans. Elrond chose elven kind and his brother Elros chose to live as a human. But because he had half-elf blood he had a much longer lifespan than ordinary men. He's Aragorn’s very first direct ancestor and the founder of the city of Numenor, which was an island city in the middle of the ocean between middle earth and the undying lands (the land of the gods, which then was part of the physical world, but isn't anymore). Think of it like an island in the middle of the Atlantic between the UK and the US. So Aragorn has some elven blood in him and that's why his lifespan is so long. It's 2 months since they left Rivendell to Aragorn dreaming about Arwen on the road to Helm's Deep. They leave Rivendell on December 25th and the battle of Helm's Deep takes place March 3rd, I believe. Elrond isn't the king of the elves, he's just a very wise and respected elf and the lord of Rivendell. He also isn't a bad guy. He's a very good guy in fact. But imagine that you had an immortal daughter (your only daughter) and she had the chance to stay immortal in a beautiful land where there was no suffering or pain but she was throwing that all away to become mortal for a guy (no matter how much you like him) who (with increasing odds) probably wasn't going to live that much longer. Wouldn't you try to convince her to break up with him and leave or try to convince him to let her go? Elrond lost his twin brother to mortality (see above) and his wife passed beyond the sea after being tortured by orcs so he's experienced the pain of familial loss many times before. He just doesn't want to lose his only daughter. Don't think badly of him. Yes, the horse that came for Aragorn (Brego) was the one he set free. I think a bit of that elven magic of Arwen had something to do with it too. Viggo also bought that horse in real life after filming was finished. He loved it so much he slept in the stable with it during filming. There's a great behind the scenes picture floating about on the internet with it. To put it simply, the elves are leaving to live in the land of the gods (which now exists in a sort of astral plain). Because of their immortality and strong spirits, they can live freely there. It's called the Undying Lands or Valinor. It's amazing how many people go “wait, is that the end?” on a nearly 4 hour movie. That's testament to how good they are. Time flies! Can't wait for your reaction to the third. It's my absolute favourite of the three. Makes Helm's Deep look like a skirmish! Take care until then!
Fun fact for this movie straight from New Zealand - At the arch of Rivendell when the Fellowship is just setting out on their journey, Frodo asks Gandalf which way to go and Gandalf responds 'left'. In reality if they turned left where it was filmed, they would walk off a steep cliff into a river canyon. (My husband and I had our picture taken under the arch. It's still there.)
Nice reaction. You are one of the only reactors that remembered Gandolf's words "Look to my coming at first light on the fifth day. At dawn, look to the East" and knew what it meant. Most are like, "huh?"...lol.
Great reaction, my friend! I highly recommend you to listen to a composition by the Irish singer Enya called "Lothlórien". Trust me, you'll be impressed.
As a kid this was my favorite of the three as an adult I've recently changed my mind and I think Return of the King is the coolest. I think it was the nature element of the Ents along with the overall Adventure feel and Helms Deep that drew me.
Sam's speech was so good even Smeagol had second thoughts on life.. Awesome reaction again! The full reaction was even better though 😏 Forth Eorlingas!
This is truly the definition of “Epic”. It’s like comparing star wars episode 5 to episode 4. The first one’s great on its own. But the next one just blows everything out of the water. The battle at Helm’s deep is incomparable. There is a different kind of epic (although just as great) battle in the next one, but this one just always gets the juices flowing. One thing that these movies have is the practical effects are off the charts. They even coined certain sayings like “bigatures”. Most of helm’s deep were those. Essentially a miniature but to a lot larger of a size. And the cg they did use was revolutionary. Great reaction and can’t wait to watch the finale!
The third movie is definitely the best and one of the greatest movies ever made My personal favourite is Fellowship of the Ring (more so the extended edition) as it feels like you’re playing DND and that movie has so much charm from the books and is the movie in the trilogy that I’m always rewatching Compared to the first movie which feels like you’re playing DND Two Towers feels like a great RPG where you’re travelling across the map to do side quests and the Battle of Helms Deep is still amazing The third movie is the one I watch the least because it’s so grand and so emotional it’s so rewarding but so draining
Let me share about Elrond & his daughter Arwen (& Aragorn by extension) therefore we must look at Elrond’s Twin Brother Elros, they both were half-elven brothers who can choose to be mortal or immortal because of their parents; (Eärendil & Elwing), both “half elven” made a great sacrifice and went to Valinor to ask for help against Morgoth(who was making everything worse than a living hellscape for 100s of generations) which lead to the greatest events in the early first and second age. Instead of being punished, the valar listened to them, that led to a great hosts of Valar and Maiar And Vanyar Elves went to Middle Earth that laid waste to Beleriand. After the War Of Wrath, the valar rewarded them for their sacrifices. They can choose to be elf or men, including their children. They chose immortally, but never return to Middle Earth because they thought that their twin sons had died. But they didnt die. Elrond chose to be immortal while his twin brother Elros chose to be mortal. He founded the Kingdom of Numenor. He lived in Numenor Island and blessed with a long life that include his descendants Those men who fought for the war were rewarded a long life but not their families or children. Only the family of Elrond can choose to be immortal or mortal in which Arwen did. Aragorn is the direct descendant of Elros, thats why he has a long life. The average lifespan of a Numenorean at their height was 500 years maximum! Now remember too that half elves are a common thing and whenever they did come together it was always significant !❤❤❤ Remember this is the SHORT version, there are so many moving parts that will make you want to dive into the books or the audio books or even do reaction videos to the famous lore videos by the biggest lore channels out there! When you’re done the trilogy try doing reaction videos just like Moviejoob did now with the lore recently as well as OmarioRPG. I recommend videos by GirlNextGondor and The Red Book, and Tolkien Untangled and especially Men Of The West. Many other cool ones I’ll recommend in the comments section of those reaction videos you do from Tolkiens Legendarium lore videos. They are super engaging. You’ll be in love. Nothing would have existed if Tolkiens works never hit the light of day as they were meant to stay private and sometimes be shared with his children and so on. No Game Of Thrones. No Skyrim. No ElderScrolls, No World Of Warcraft, no Dungeons&Dragons. None of it. Not even Star Wars. Not even Harry Potter! They took inspiration from his works which were souly to give back a forgotten history of the Anglo Saxons that had their culture & history destroyed as the larger empires were riding around them. His works reflect the Elder Edda(Norse) The Kalevala(Finnish) and the Welsh people from Wales as well as Irelands cultures of the Tuatha De Danaan as well! His languages are fully fleshed out too resembling Finnish & Welsh • By the way Elrond is around 6870-8000 years old & nearly a full Elf year (as they age very very differently to Men) is close to 144 man years(solar years for them). but if you want a more true age you must realize that he may be 8000 but in human years after the sun and moon were created from the flower from of the two trees of Valinor as well as one fruit from the other of the two trees; they experience the TIME and the way men experience it but their clock is different! They live as long as the world/Arda/Ëa does. Essentially. Which is why they are so in synch with the world around them and the nature responds to them ! Think of when Legolas walked ontop of all that snow on the Mountain of Caradhras!! They continue to endure as long ad the world itself does. (Arda) and speaking of age, Legolas is also 3000+years old by the time he becomes a member of The Fellowship Of The Ring! If you look back on the original trilogy movies: The fellowship had a 3000year old Elven PRINCE in their party. And a clandestine angelic being who was Gandalf originally known Olòrin to those such as Galadriel who knew him when she lived in Valinor, Elrond also knew would be one of the only others who’d know this save Círdan The Shipwright(Oldest Elf in the world but even he was a few generations down from the original elvish peoples to awake to the stars) & kin to Thingol who also is a semi distant cousin to Legolas as Legolas’ grandfather was the close cousin to Thingol(same with Galadriel’s Husband Celeborn through his father, their capital within Lothlòrien was named after his father(Caras Galadhon) Galadhon being the name indicating that which belongs to the father. And a 87 year old Númenorean man named Aragorn!, a 335 year old Dwarven Prince named Gimli. And as a microcosm they resembled the coalition of all the races of middle earth uniting under one banner which is another reason it sort of metaphysically set into motion the world uniting at the macrocosm ! Galadriel's Phial (gift to Frodo) is something really special. light & dark have a spiritual dimension in Tolkien. way back before the First Age Valinor was lit by two very special Trees that waxed & waned in opposition to each other. a master craftsman Elf named Fëanor fashioned three gems that captured their light, the Silmarils. (And it’s same power and light was drawn into it from the very firmament where it now stands amongst the stars as Eärendil himself (Elrond’s father stands watch over The Doors Of Night where Melkor still is held until fate holds him no longer.) Everyone who saw them was captivated by them, even the Melkor(Morgoth); the first Dark Lord. Wars were fought over them called the Kinstrife after Morgoth had the Trees destroyed the Silmarils were the only light from them left and he stole them as you may remember, they changed hands a few times & eventually one was left after one fell into the sea & another was lost in a pit of magma. a Half Elf named Eärendil (the first one! Who was Elrond’s father.) came into its possession & sailed it to Valinor as a gift to the Valar to ask for their help in defeating Morgoth, which they did. the Valar turned it into a star & hung it in the sky with Eärendil as its guardian. the fountain of Galadriel's Mirror is lit by light captured from the star Eärendil & her Phial has water from the fount. I've left out about 90% of the story but it's quite important & central to the story of Middle Earth. for her to give the Phial to Frodo is quite extraordinary. its light does burn & blind Shelob (that's the spider's name) but doesn't kill her outright. oh also, before he was put in the sky to guard the last Silmaril Earendil had two children, Elrond & his brother Elros the first King of Numenor. Tolkien's lore is deep & vast & the Silmarils are at the center of it. The Star of Eärendil is the light that shines in the horizon both in the morning and the evening. It consists in a boat raised by the Valar and led by Eärendil, who carries a shining Silmaril while watching the Doors of Night. The Door of Night was a portal in the distant Uttermost West that leads to heaven, and/or the Void. Eärendil's ship Vingilot was taken by the Valar from the rim of the world, passed through the Door and was lifted into the "oceans of heaven". PS: Eärendil is ELROND’s half Vanyar Elf half human father, that father was the son of the great Tuor of the great stories of The Children Of Húrin book!❤❤❤❤ Aragorn is a CLOSE descendant of a direct bloodline to Elros(Elrond’s Twin Brother) The title of half elven (Peredhel) was due to the combined history of Beren&Lúthien, his mother Elwing was the granddaughter of Lùthien! Eärendil was the husband of Elwing. The true half elf; son of the best elvish women ever who rescued hundreds from the highest of elvish kingdoms(Gondolin); her name is Idril & one of the best most powerful men around named Tuor. Who later on when they went to Valinor together through their own way lead to him choosing to be counted as One Of The Eldar for Idril. Eärendil did the same for Elwing. ❤
Galadriel intentionally matched Arwen & Aragorn together while they were both visiting in Lothlorien! Arwen & Aragorn met in Rivendell, & that is where Aragorn fell in love with her, although it doesn’t sound like she felt the same at the time. Aragorn’s mother Gilraen warned him that he was aiming too high, and Elrond was not happy about it either, and Aragorn took heed of this and left Rivendell, to learn how to be a Ranger and to oppose Sauron’s forces. Many years later, he came to Lothlorien, seeking rest and shelter, and Galadriel allowed him to enter. We have this line in the Tale of Aragorn and Arwen: ‘But Aragorn was grown to full stature of body and mind, and Galadriel bade him cast aside his wayworn raiment, and she clothed him in silver and white, with a cloak of elven-grey and a bright gem on his brow. Then more than any kind of Men he appeared, and seemed rather an Elf-lord from the Isles of the West. And thus it was that Arwen first beheld him again after their long parting; and as he came walking towards her under the trees of Caras Galadhon laden with flowers of gold, her choice was made and her doom appointed.’ LOTR Appendices. To me, that makes it rather explicit that Galadriel wanted Aragorn to appear at his best. Why? Who could he possibly impress in Lothlorien, except for Galadriel’s grand-daughter? I think it is quite clear that she wanted them matched, and perhaps her foresight told her that they needed to be matched, as it was part of destiny, to begin the Dominion of Men (something Elrond probably also realised, but couldn’t willingly promote, since it would mean Arwen and Elrond would be parted forever). Plus there is the scene in Lorien, where Galadriel gives Aragorn the Elessar, which went from Galadriel to Celebrian to Arwen and then back to Galadriel in order that she give it as a gift to Aragorn. Again it speaks to me as a collaborative act, and part of Galadriel helping bring the two together: And Aragorn answered: “Lady, you know all my desire, and long held in keeping the only treasure that I seek. Yet it is not yours to give me, even if you would; and only through darkness shall I come to it.” “Yet maybe this will lighten your heart,' said Galadriel; for it was left in my care to be given to you, should you pass through this land.” Then she lifted from her lap a great stone of a clear green, set in a silver brooch that was wrought in the likeness of an eagle with outspread wings; and as she held it up the gem flashed like the sun shining through the leaves of spring. “This stone I gave to Celebrían my daughter, and she to hers; and now it comes to you as a token of hope. In this hour take the name that was foretold for you, Elessar, the Elfstone of the house of Elendil!” From LOTR FOTR BOOK
13:38 As father of a girl I totally side with Elrond here. Trying to manipulate his daughters decision to stay with her people may not be the ethical correct choice, but it's just what a father naturally does - to protect his girl at all costs from harm. I don't think he lied about what he saw for her.
Exactly - Let me share about Elrond & his daughter Arwen (& Aragorn by extension) therefore we must look at Elrond’s Twin Brother Elros, they both were half-elven brothers who can choose to be mortal or immortal because of their parents; (Eärendil & Elwing), both “half elven” made a great sacrifice and went to Valinor to ask for help against Morgoth(who was making everything worse than a living hellscape for 100s of generations) which lead to the greatest events in the early first and second age. (And it’s same power and light was drawn into it from the very firmament where it now stands amongst the stars as Eärendil himself (Elrond’s father stands watch over The Doors Of Night where Melkor still is held until fate holds him no longer.) @@Makkaru112 I beg to differ, Elves indeed do manipulation, there were a few examples in the Silmarillion. For example when Luthiens father send Beren on a suicide mission to claim one of the Silmarills for the hand of his daughter. Or when Feanor lied to his people so that they follow him overseas in search of revenge on Morgoth. Elves aren't without fail but you're right, they aren't supposed to. And btw I admire your effort for this long comment, I love it!
Much of the middle third of T2T was not in Tolkien's book, but was invented by the screen writers. In the book, the war with Saruman had already begun, and Gandalf's healing of the king led Theoden to want to join his army in the field. Grima pleaded to look after Meduseld (Theoden's hall) in the king's absence (the fox in the henhouse). Gandalf said, "See, Theoden, here is a snake! With safety, you cannot take it with you, nor can you leave it behind. To slay it would be just. But it was not always as it now is. Once it was a man, and did you service in its fashion. Give him a horse, and let him go at once, wherever he chooses. By his choice you shall judge him." In the event, Grima doesn't arrive at Isengard until after the battle is over and has no effect on events.
What’s even cooler is - Saruman never served Sauron nor bent to him at all in the books. The Gandalf locked in the Tower bit is explained ONLY in the Unfinished Tales Book: In [manuscript-C) The Black Riders arrived at the Gate of Isengard while Gandalf was still a prisoner in the tower. In this account, Saruman, in fear & despair, & perceiving the full horror of service to Mordor, resolved suddenly to yield to Gandalf, & to beg for his pardon & help. Temporizing at the Gate, he admitted that he had Gandalf within, & said that he would go & try to discover what he knew; if that were unavailing, he would deliver Gandalf up to them. Then Saruman hastened to the summit of Orthanc - & found Gandalf gone. Away south against the setting moon he saw a great Eagle flying towards Edoras. See, the thing is he was always master of studying the enemy & even being able to think like they do to always know exactly the best ways to handle ever situation and so on, but the thing is he didn't just become the enemy, he at this time in a sense for once actually grew afraid of him, probably Sauron did what Sauron did with Finrod Felagund(Galadriel’s elder brother who by the way was the most important in the Legendarium & is the main reason the third age even exists) which basically widdled Saruman with various visions of the past and future until it wore him down, but Saruman(Curumo) was the mostly already becoming weary due to what was called The along Defeat, magic bleeding out from the lands of middle earth and subsequently certain things become less and less possible and the elves begin to go west. Even the ones who never wished to leave middle earth and many of which were born here by the thousands. So him also being a student and helper of Aulë of the Valar he was going to fight fire with fire and make a bid for the ring just so Sauron could never regain full power and if Saruman found a way to release himself from his power restrictions even by any small margin or worked with Eru in some way it might have worked out in the end if things went differently enough to where such action from him would be needed. Ontop of that he was growing ever jealous of Gandalf for he received the Varya from Círdan and prior to that was chosen by the other Valar, Nienna’s chosen champion to go to middle earth. But Gandalf(Olórin back then) refused over and over and exclaimed his fear of Sauron(Mairon), varya I feel would have kindle the heart of Saruman to stay strong as he had been fighting the evils of the world for a very long time since he had been sent to Middle Earth. And for the is reason Saruman wished to hold the ring at hostage. Keep Sauron from taking back his full strength and basically use it to stave off The Long Defeat
Elrond had a twin brother, Elros, who like him was half-elven, and therefore had a choice to be elf or man, but chose mortality (whereas Elrond chose to be elven kind and therefore retained their immortality). So Elrond speaks from the deep sorrow of experience, having lost his twin brother to that choice. The contemplation of immortality-and the ‘gift of mortality’ to Man-was a recurring theme in Tolkien’s work.
Just remember we all had to wait a year after that cliffhanger. And the one before it. Let me be one of the ones to tell you, prepare to be a shell of a human being by the end of the next movie.

"War will make corpses of us all." One of my favorite lines in all three movies.
Agreed. Still insightful in 2024.
Same. 🎯
I agree, and it's completely from the point of view of a war veteran, which Tolkien definitely was.
That and the line "what can men do against such reckless hate". Showed exactly what he knew.
"I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil.” -Gandalf
Wrong film. Try the next one.
A little early 😅
Still a beautiful line though ❤
Too early!
Spoiler 😂😂😂
@butnooneshome only a spoiler if you know the context.
Dear sir, brace for impact for the last one. 13 Oscars. All totally deserved. You WILL cry, and we're here for it :)
11, not 13.
The 2012 London Olympics Opening Ceremony did an interesting job of showing the process of industrialization.
"Forty-two? Oh, that's not bad for a pointy-eared elvish princeling. Hmph! I myself am sitting pretty on forty-THREE."
"Forty-three."
"He was already dead!"
"He was twitching."
"He was TWITCHING because he's got my axe EMBEDDED IN HIS NERVOUS SYSTEM!"
Fun Fact: They couldn't recruit enough men in the six foot height area to play Uruk-hai, so men from five foot high were cast as well.
Is the "Uruk-Low" thing a REAL fact? Pretty clever either way.
"Uruk-Low" 😂
Fun fact: the armorers made ALL the armor of this movie by hand, by the time they were finished, they had literally worn off their fingerprints!
As someone who has lived with this series, it's so refreshing to see someone new experience it all.
Fun fact: Aragorn became so attached to him that he bought him (and two others) from his owner and took him home where he lived until the end of his life which was I believe in December of 2020
I absolutely cannot wait for Return of the King! The best in the franchise is yet to come!
Sam’s speech has me bawling once more.
Sam has the best lines on each movie.
"I made a promise, Mr Frodo. A promise. 'Don’t you leave him Samwise Gamgee.' And I don’t mean to. I don’t mean to."
"That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it’s worth fighting for."
"Come on, Mr. Frodo. I can't carry it for you... but I can carry you!"
@@dkosmari Sam is the MVP

I see that he's having a hard time believing that The Return of the King is even more Epic!!!!
Can't wait!
The fact that this trilogy never picked up any acting Oscars (especially for Ian McKellen in Fellowship and Sean Astin in Two Towers) will always bother me.
@@Pentarax Sean Astin in Return of the King, and Andy Serkis for his portrayal of Gollum, too.
@rikk319 The Academy said Andy Serkis wasn't eligible for TTT as he was never visible- they classed it as a voice performance despite him being on set doing everything Gollum did. The mind boggles.
"Bring your pretty face to my axe" (16:02) is an underrated line.
Film Gimli is on the level of Arnold Schwartzenegger with his one-liners in combat situations.
"No parent should ever have to bury their child." - Théoden
That moment almost always get me very emotional.
So good actor! Underrated. Every actor in LOTR is underrated! Should have best lead, co Oscar in every genre
Denothor wouldn't care if it was Farimir.
Eowyn is such an epic lady. You will see how epic she is in the next film.
Shield maidens are pretty epic.
I thought I'd have to wait for part 2 I'm so happy

Your Lord of the Rings reactions have been amazing so far and I can’t wait for your reaction to the third movie!

Some context for Elrond and how much Arwen is giving up / Aragorn’s age:
in a past age Half-Elves were gifted with a choice - to be counted among Elves or Men.
This is also why Aragorn is built different, he literally descends from “greater Men”
Arwen is about 2500 years old.
Yes death was the Gift of Eru Illuvatar to Men. If you are going to live forever it’s better to be happy than miserable. lol
@@philipbutler6608 True, but Dúnedain don’t live forever 😛

At 9:53 you say "These look like much, much bigger versions of an elephant." Tolkien writes "Fear and wonder, maybe, enlarged him in the hobbit's eyes, but the Mumak of Harad was indeed a beast of vast bulk, and the like of him does not walk now in Middle-earth; his kin that live still in latter days are but memories of his girth and majesty."
Pure genius of the veteran and scholar JRR Tolkien ❤
@@lechat8533Spoiler
Sam lets it go almost immediately because all the ring could tempt him with is an everlasting garden, and he knew he had as much as he wanted already. I don't know where you got that he struggled at all. He's quite literally the only one to give it up easily.
@@chadwood4412
His inner struggle was short and shown subtly, but it was obvious.
While, in the beginning, Frodo picked it up, held it, and was willing to give it to Gandalf and even Galadriel.
@@lechat8533 spoiler
Frodo wasn't in mordor, Sam was........
I love your reactions not only because you allow yourself to be emotional.
I love your comments, and you even make me laugh🤣❤
Thank you, my friend!🤗
Enjoy your reactions. Glad you’re enjoying them.
I have seen countless lotr reactions by and yours is the funniest I’ve seen by far. Your commentary is hilarious! Will be waiting for the next one :)
And there were no questions from Peter. When Christopher Lee says how it was in WW2, you listen.
Yeah that's awesome. the scene with Merry and Pippin dancing drunk on the table had been really bad if Lee had not showed how it was done
The BTS stuff from the documentaries curated into a playlist by pajasek99 shows just how amazing it was. Look how much was put into everything. ❤
As in, didn't see this one in theatres. I was still raised on it LUL
Fun fact: The Chain mail worn by the actors was hand made by two artisans, to honour them, PJ cast them as the king's assistants dressing him up before he leaves for the Charge towards the end.
The battle of Helm’s Deep is too epic!! Can’t wait for your ROTK reaction!
Also, the actor that plays Gimli is the voice for Treebeard 😎
Yes let's go can't wait for return of the king
At 23:40, this scene between Boromir, Faramir, and their father Denethor is the principal reason that Tolkien nerds prefer the Extended version of the movie, as the scene was cut from the Theatrical version. It goes a long way to explaining Boromir's actions in FOTR.
And it gets better.
Great reaction.
In the book, Gandalf describes his fight with the Balrog of Morgoth saying “ Ever I slew him and ever we fell.”
To me, that line was epic.
Helms Deep has to be my favorite parts of the trilogy, loving it
Sean Astin with 2 great speeches in movies and this one is even better than the one in The Goonies when he was a kid.
He also bought the horse Arwen's stunt double rode in the first movie and gave it to her if I remember right.)
Hard enough learning all your lines for these movies but the fact that they learned to speak lines in the Elvin language that Tolkien created is just amazing.
"it's got a nice ring to it" interesting choice of words haha

Dude your reactions are top notch PIMP!
19:45 I almost choked on water myself at this.
Sam's speech gets me every time.
I can’t wait until you do the next one! You are going to love it!!!
RIP Bernard Hill, our beloved King Théoden ❤
Lol once that rain slowly started, there was nothing else to do but get hyped!
You seem like a great dude, I really enjoyed your lotr reactions so far ! Keep going bro. Excited for the last one !
All three movies are 10/10 but the Two Towers will always be my favourite.
Great reaction, my friend! I highly recommend you to listen to a composition by the Irish singer Enya called "Lothlórien". Trust me, you'll be impressed.
Listen to the entire LoTR soundtrack! It's incredible!
Check out the different versions of VivaTrio's song called LORIEN
About time Chris Pratt started a reaction channel.
As a kid this was my favorite of the three as an adult I've recently changed my mind and I think Return of the King is the coolest. I think it was the nature element of the Ents along with the overall Adventure feel and Helms Deep that drew me.
Cliffhanger endings…
And we waited a year between movies. I stood in line for opening night midnight showings.
Sam's speech was so good even Smeagol had second thoughts on life.. Awesome reaction again! The full reaction was even better though 😏 Forth Eorlingas!
Youre gonna love the next one soooooo muchhhhh😊its got everything in it, times 10. So good
I really hope you keep going with movie reactions. There are many older movies that are sublime. Is there any way we can recommend any?
Red Sonja, Highlander, Dark Crystal, Dune(both new and old, Ghibli films, and so many more.
Looking forward to your reaction to Return of the King!
"It's only a passing thing, this shadow." ~Samwise Gamgee~ ❤❤❤
I cannot waiiiitttt for the next one.
Middle earth avengers is why I can’t wait to watch your reaction 😂😂😂
I'm glad you're having a great time reacting.."The Hobbit Trilogy" is waving 🤭 Can't wait for your reaction 😅
So good to see you reviewing this one - for Dorkness!
helms deep goes so hard , me and buddies would fast forward to the battle while pre drinking for the bar hahahah
Man I cant wait for you to react to the final movie, you do it so well! 😁
10:01 It actually does derive from the French "olifaunt," via Middle English "oliphaunt".
Sabre-toothed Pug, so good
Love the tears..... ❤
The third movie is definitely the best and one of the greatest movies ever made
My personal favourite is Fellowship of the Ring (more so the extended edition) as it feels like you’re playing DND and that movie has so much charm from the books and is the movie in the trilogy that I’m always rewatching
Compared to the first movie which feels like you’re playing DND Two Towers feels like a great RPG where you’re travelling across the map to do side quests and the Battle of Helms Deep is still amazing
The third movie is the one I watch the least because it’s so grand and so emotional it’s so rewarding but so draining
I always loved the last scene with that pan-up to Mordor and the preview of what's to come.
Great reaction the next film is spectacular
Great reaction. You're very attentive you have a good grasp on what's happening and the fact you cried at the end made me subscribe 😆 🎉
Loved the reaction just you wait for Return Of The King lol can’t wait 👏👏👏👏
Sam and Frodo are in the same tales that he listened to as a little Hobbit. Arwen is Galadriels granddaughter
I thought Arwen is Galadriels granddaughter, not grandmother.
@@josephfoster5593 lol that’s right I got it backwards. Elrond is Aragorns Uncle.
Now remember too that half elves are a common thing and whenever they did come together it was always significant !❤❤❤
Remember this is the SHORT version, there are so many moving parts that will make you want to dive into the books or the audio books or even do reaction videos to the famous lore videos by the biggest lore channels out there!
His languages are fully fleshed out too resembling Finnish & Welsh
•
By the way Elrond is around 6870-8000 years old & nearly a full Elf year (as they age very very differently to Men) is close to 144 man years(solar years for them). but if you want a more true age you must realize that he may be 8000 but in human years after the sun and moon were created from the flower from of the two trees of Valinor as well as one fruit from the other of the two trees; they experience the TIME and the way men experience it but their clock is different!
(And it’s same power and light was drawn into it from the very firmament where it now stands amongst the stars as Eärendil himself (Elrond’s father stands watch over The Doors Of Night where Melkor still is held until fate holds him no longer.)
Everyone who saw them was captivated by them, even the Melkor(Morgoth); the first Dark Lord. Who was Elrond’s father.) came into its possession & sailed it to Valinor as a gift to the Valar to ask for their help in defeating Morgoth, which they did. the Valar turned it into a star & hung it in the sky with Eärendil as its guardian. the fountain of Galadriel's
Mirror is lit by light captured from the star Eärendil & her Phial has water from the fount.
PS: Eärendil is ELROND’s half Vanyar Elf half human father, that father was the son of the great Tuor of the great stories of The Children Of Húrin book!❤❤❤❤
Aragorn is a CLOSE descendant of a direct bloodline to Elros(Elrond’s Twin Brother)
The title of half elven (Peredhel) was due to the combined history of Beren&Lúthien, his mother Elwing was the granddaughter of Lùthien!
We have this line in the Tale of Aragorn and Arwen:
‘But Aragorn was grown to full stature of body and mind, and Galadriel bade him cast aside his wayworn raiment, and she clothed him in silver and white, with a cloak of elven-grey and a bright gem on his brow.
Again it speaks to me as a collaborative act, and part of Galadriel helping bring the two together:
And Aragorn answered: “Lady, you know all my desire, and long held in keeping the only treasure that I seek. Yet it is not yours to give me, even if you would; and only through darkness shall I come to it.”
“Yet maybe this will lighten your heart,' said Galadriel; for it was left in my care to be given to you, should you pass through this land.” Then she lifted from her lap a great stone of a clear green, set in a silver brooch that was wrought in the likeness of an eagle with outspread wings; and as she held it up the gem flashed like the sun shining through the leaves of spring.
Elves don’t do manipulation. They’re all about free will and the importance of it. The Valar themselves and even Eru Îlluvatar are big on this.

Now remember too that half elves are a common thing and whenever they did come together it was always significant !❤❤❤
Remember this is the SHORT version, there are so many moving parts that will make you want to dive into the books or the audio books or even do reaction videos to the famous lore videos by the biggest lore channels out there!
His languages are fully fleshed out too resembling Finnish & Welsh

Who was Elrond’s father.) came into its possession & sailed it to Valinor as a gift to the Valar to ask for their help in defeating Morgoth, which they did. the Valar turned it into a star & hung it in the sky with Eärendil as its guardian. the fountain of Galadriel's
Mirror is lit by light captured from the star Eärendil & her Phial has water from the fount.
He didn't lie. What he said was pure ROTK Appendix.
@@Makkaru112 I beg to differ, Elves indeed do manipulation, there were a few examples in the Silmarillion.
0:40 Aragorn was going for the "being the bigger person" rout.
45:50 Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night 🎶
