Effie grew up in the capital. Glamorizing the hunger games is all she’s ever known. That’s why she’s so chipper about them. She’s never had a victor before Katniss and Peeta. Spending all this time with them she starts to care about them more than tributes. That’s why her views about the games start to change when they have to go in a second time, because now it’s people that she cares about going in not knowing if they’ll live or die. She starts seeing the games for how they truly are. Morbid.

Yes! There’s something so sad and real about when Effie reads Haymitch’s name with a sigh of relief. I like to think she wanted Katniss and Peeta to be together and live happily ever after, and if Haymitch and Katniss went in, there was still a chance. So when Peeta volunteers, that false reality she’s been hanging onto by a thread breaks and she has to really contend with the fact that no, they can’t be together.

You're right when you say all Katniss and Peeta wanted was to survive. People tend to forget but they are still pretty young. They are both 17yo in this one. Katniss was never a rebel, she would always choose her loved ones over a rebellion. Peeta would always choose Katniss over anything, including himself. Gale, on the other side, is a true rebel. He's 2 years older, he started working in the mines all day, he knows more people, the people he works with, he's more aware of the suffering around him maybe. I mean Katniss is aware of it of course, but her focus is entirely on her family because she had to provide for them from a very young age and was like a mother to Prim. Remember this point about them and their personnality in the next movie. In the end, Katniss and Peeta are just kids who never asked for any of this.

From what I remember President Snow wanted Finnick to win the Third Quarter Quell. It’s why the Game-Makers picked a tropical climate for the Quarter Quell’s arena - with the Cornucopia being surrounded on all sides with water. Finnick being from District 4 (eg. the fishing District) meant he was one of the few Victors who knew how to swim. His signature weapon is a trident, and as Haymitch says he’s incredibly skilled in combat especially in water. The Game-Makers made sure Finnick had every advantage in the Games. As the youngest ever Victor Finnick had accrued a lot of fame and was a fan favourite. Unfortunately, Finnick’s good looks (along with his popularity) meant he was threatened into giving sexual favours to people high up in the Capitol. Many people would be outraged if he died because of this, as they would be losing out on ‘being’ with him. It’s why Finnick gives this vague, “my love if I die, my last thought will be of your lips” speech in his interview as many higher ups would be incensed Finnick was being put in danger, and would pay a lot of money to make sure he won (or stop the Games completely), if only so they could “service” Finnick again as sick as that sounds. Either just to use him or because they believe they’re in love. This is why Finnick tells Katniss he deals in secrets, as when he’s forced to be with someone intimately he sweet-talks them for valuable information. It’s also hinted the reason all Johanna’s loved ones are killed is because she refused to sell herself, but this is never confirmed. We know Johanna won her Games by presenting herself as foolish and cowardly so no one would target her, and when there wasn’t many tributes left she killed them all pretty brutally. The Capitol wasn’t pleased to say the least, most likely since many people had already bet against her so they lost out on money. They felt she was deceitful. Katniss most likely would have been forced to sell herself as well, if it wasn’t for Peeta and the ‘star-crossed lovers’ gimmick. We know Haymitch won the Second Quarter Quell, which was a Hunger Games with double the amount of tributes, two boys and two girls from each District. Haymitch won by throwing an axe at a forcefield, it bounced off and killed the last tribute when it flew back unexpectedly. The Capitol also wasn’t happy about this, as they felt it was a sign of rebellion so they killed Haymitch’s family too. This is where Katniss learns about force fields in the books. Katniss is also one of the rare people who can swim! She learned to swim at the same time she learned to hunt as her father sneaked them past the fences, and into the woodland, creeks and rivers. Most people in District 12 don’t know how to swim, and the Capitol had no idea Katniss could, as obviously it’s illegal to go out of bounds and no one wants to get caught.

Peeta handles maneuver so much better than Katniss does. Aside from his strength, he's not really the warrior that Katniss is. But he can fight on the airwaves and in ads and in the forum of public opinion like you wouldn't believe. You really only see part of it in the movies-how he connects with people and grasps what makes them tick. This actually means he's the more dangerous *victor,* if not the more dangerous Games competitor. Catching Fire starts to get into how the victors need to play politics to keep surviving and supporting their districts; how they get in trouble when they don't. Johanna has no one now because she fought the system. Finnick seems like a not-so-great guy at first because it's how he's protected himself against the Capitol. He built a persona to market to his fans.
Katniss and Peeta's reality wedding show-the commodification and consumer culture surrounding their "love story"-is just the tip of the iceberg of the way the Capitol treats its victors. The victors are showered with gifts and food and money. They get new houses, clothes, etc. But the Capitol trots them around every six months to remind the districts halfway through the year about the Hunger Games, and it makes them mentor the tributes every year. Then, whenever they're in the Capitol, it's reruns of the worst time of their lives, and the citizens of the Capitol feel they own their victors, and the victors are encouraged to permit this. Katniss alluded to Capitol citizens "paying" for the privilege of Finnick's company, and he confirmed he deals in secrets-that he is accepting favors from his suitors. Keep an eye on that in Mockingjay.
But Peeta would have been able to operate in the Capitol. His donation to 11; the way he handles Caesar Flickerman-he's a natural politician. Katniss feels he could work in the system to do much more good than she could. She also feels Peeta is a much better person (and she's right-it's a big point in the CF book that Peeta is an outlier among the victors, a victor who wouldn't have won if it hadn't been for Katniss, missing her killer instinct).
The love triangle shouldn't have been a thing, except *maybe* as something that Snow thought was happening or something Katniss herself wanted to explore when she felt herself being railroaded toward Peeta. That might have been interesting. Katniss could have had NO feelings for Gale except friendship but have to fight Snow's suspicion that her long platonic hunting partnership with Gale-which of course still means he'd be like family and she wouldn't want him hurt-was something more. It could have also been interesting if Katniss out of contrariness or curiosity tried something with Gale only for Gale to tell her that they're not like that; Katniss is just feeling trapped. I would have liked either of those storylines a whole lot better, because the way they actually did it, it's pretty obvious that Katniss doesn't like Gale like that. Gale likes her like that, and Katniss's confused feelings are a combination of feeling she fits better with Gale and Peeta is much too good for her and guilt that she's hurting Gale. The conflict, therefore, is nearly completely imaginary and mostly promoted by Gale himself.

Obviously the books are written from Katniss's POV so the movies are mostly focusing on her. So I'll add a bit about the other characters :
Peeta suffers from PTSD and has nightmares too after the first Games. He can't sleep, that's why he arrives so quickly in her bedroom when she wakes up screaming. Because he's up all night walking around the train. After that, they sleep together like they did in the caves, to protect each other from the nightmares. After the Games, Peeta (who is only 16) is left pretty much alone to deal with his trauma. His family doesn't come live with him in the Victor Village, so he's living alone in a big empty house with a drunk for neighbour, and a girl who he doesn't speak to. Also, I hate that they downplayed Peeta's mother abuse in the movie. It's so much a big part of who he is, why he's so ready to sacrifice himself, why he thinks he can't do anything and nobody needs him.
Haymitch is a real alcoholic. It's not shown well in the movies. People sometimes wish he was in the Quater Quell but he wouldn't have lasted very long. When they all are neighbours in Victor Village, the times before the QQ is announced, Peeta and Katniss almost play parents to Haymitch. They check on him every day, Peeta brings him bread, Katniss brings him alcohol. Obviously, Haymitch had the trauma of hiw own games, and also the 24 years after that where he had to mentor two kids. He made an effort for Peeta and Katniss during their Games but now that they won, he goes back quickly to his old habits.

if you think making past victors competing again is fucked up, for the first Quell, the districts had to hold elections to vote which tributes to send to the Games. For the second, they had to pay up twice the amount of tributes, and those were the Games Haymitch won. A friend of Katniss's mother went that year, too. My theory is the Quell idea they replaced with Katniss's is that the parents of the reaped tributes would fight in the Games.

Great watch!!! My favourite series of all time. So glad you’re loving it too.
A couple of things to help you make sense & give some context.
    - Peeta’s painting of Rue during their evaluations. It’s not to trigger Katniss but to hold the Gamemakers & the Capitol responsible for killing that little girl. It’s his act of rebellion in his own way. So Katniss inspired by him joins Peeta in his rebellion and hangs Seneca Crane also hold them responsible for his death since Seneca hung himself instead of eating the berries.
    - the plan was always to get BOTH Peeta & Katniss out of the games. The rebellion knew the only way Katniss would cooperate was if they saved Peeta. It was her goal from the beginning to save him. Also they work better as a team. Katniss is a symbol & survivor but Peeta is also more the politician of the two so he’s great at swaying an audience. It’s the reason why one of the tributes dies to protect him in the arena. She was in on the plan. To save them. But unfortunately at the end in all the chaos Peeta is separated from the pack & captured before his tracker can be taken out when the arena is destroyed.
Can’t wait for more reactions. Mockingjay Part 1 & 2 are my favourite of the series.

0:20 Tbh, I like the prequel the most right now. And movie-wise - the first one has its own charm that embodies the aura way more.
24:15 So if Hunger Games were more about the Battle Royale part of it / the games themselves and not the moral and political implications of them, likely Haymitch would be the one to go so Katniss could be the final girl there. But as Collins wanted to tell a different story - and give us the rebellion, she had the freedom of saving multiple victors instead.
23:25 Mind you both Peeta and Katniss for their "art" got both twelve points. It was meant to put a bigger attention at them - so most other tributes would target them for challenging the judges.
56:30 Snow's big mistake was to let Plutarch come back. He should have gone for newer blood from Capitol that haven't a lot of contact with districts. If half of those victors were dead - he would have much less issues to fight the rebellion.

You recognized that Peeta has some real strategy where as some just see him as passive participant. That plus your love for Peeta, Haymitch, and Cinna made this such an enjoyable reaction to watch!
The scene with Katniss and Peeta on the beach always gets me. Him giving her the locket with Gale's picture shows how deeply he loves her and is willing to sacrifice for her. I doubt Gale would ever do the same. That inspires Katniss 'I need you' to Peeta which is deeper than an 'I love you' from her because Katniss has built her life around never needing anyone.

FYI: the 3 finger salute is a district 12 way of saying goodbye & thank you to a fallen comrade - that’s why they don’t get in trouble in 12 for doing it. The other districts do because it’s not their custom & the Capitol doesn’t like crossover between the districts, they want them to be separate intentionally so they can maintain control. The fact that Katniss partnered with Rue and called her a friend, not just ally is what got things rowdy coz that was partnered with the salute.
Also, the individual assessments are to show skills - since everyone already knows the victors skills most of them were rebellious in what they did. Peeta painted Rue’s memorial that Katniss gave her because he wanted to hold them accountable for what they did to her. In the books Katniss had to wait hours for them to clean it because they’re not supposed to see what any other tribute did & he used paints that couldn’t be removed from the ground.

Gale can’t really compete w/ Peeta and what he and Katniss went through together. Even though Gale was her close friend from childhood, she’s been in the _arena_ w/ Peeta. They are each other’s peers from the _same games,_ which *never* happens. They got the same memories and the same PTSD. You go through something like that w/ somebody, it’s going to make you close, 9 times out of 10. And Gale can’t relate.

My favorite quote of Cinna's that the movies didn't include is "Get dressed you worthless thing." So every victor has to cultivate a "skill" that Capitolites can get interested in (anything from music to gardening, etc). Katniss doesn't know what she's going to choose until Cinna suggests fashion design. She doesn't have any actual talent for it, but he designs things for her to present as hers. That quote is when he first arrives, giving her her tour start outfit, and she's joking about wether she "designed" her outfit, or he did. I just love him teasing her in this moment.

Max score is used to make you a target for everyone else, since you seem to be a danger to them, so they will team up against you.

Other tributes aren’t allowed to see each others skills as a rule. It did work better for the movie that Katniss saw it though. Think Peeta alludes to the idea that he wanted to hold them accountable for what they did cos he said to Katniss “her death really was the cruelest of them all wasn’t it?” Or something like that.

    • @clover2739
      @clover2739 7 месяцев назад

People always say this but he didn’t do that for katniss to see it or to remind her of anything, he did it purely as his own form or rebellion and anger to hold the gamemakers accountable. He wouldn’t want katniss to see it or react since he’s trying to keep her alive and making her angry is the opposite of what he wants. I know book wise Katniss doesn’t see the painting but knows Peeta has angered the gamemakers but even movie wise in a deleted scene he tells katniss he never meant for her to see that Rue painting.

I'm so glad that you like Peeta. So many people complain about him being too weak or too nice when really he just has so much empathy and compassion for others. When he volunteered for Haymitch it was for so many reasons. From the PR standpoint it makes the lovers story more compelling in the sense that he'd rather die with Katniss than spend his life without her. The real reason though is that he wants to protect her and take equal responsibility for his rebellion against the Capital.
One of the aspects about Katniss that the rebellion really appreciates about her is that she only kills someone when its absolutely necessary to protect her allies. She's not like the Peacekeepers who attack and intimidate. That's why its so important when Finnick tells her to remember who the real enemy is. If she lost sight of that she'd just become a Capital tool for Snow to use as a piece in his game to keep power from the people.

Haven't read the books but at 46:52 I think it was a sacrifice knowing "half the tributes were in on it" but also being a morphling you're an addict so with being an addict victor life is shit so why not end your life & your suffering especially if it's for a good cause

Peeta drew the picture of Rue on the floor. District 11 rioted over Rue's death. He was making a statement, just like Katniss.
Are you always this animated when you react to films? I enjoyed your reaction. Looking forward to the next installment.

I meant to say this earlier, but there's only 24 Hunger Games contestants because it's 2 from each district. After the first rebellion, the Capitol destroyed District 13 (or let people think they did as you'll see in Mockingjay). After the start of the second rebellion, the Capitol destroyed District 12 as well as bombing others to try and discourage siding with the rebels.

Imagine going to the district of the tributes you killed as a victory lap.
