After watching this, I realize that I really have never been in love before, only had fleeting romances and meaningless kisses. This is love, this is true love. Sniff :( This song has gotten me through lots of tough times.

It does show as true love but the truth is that they are great actors. She is outstanding and she is so unpretentious in real life.

I will see this movie soon! My father saw it when he was young, back in '64 or '65 and now he told me how much he liked it and how he cryed (you can imagine..if my father cried, then it must be a very emotional movie :) ).I am sure i will enjoy it,especially because i too am living a very special love story with both tears and passion! I also think Deneuve is one of the most beautiful women..old movies always had such good-looking women who were simply beautiful and pure without any make-up..

No, which was the saving grace of the film. There are several reasons this film has captured us. 1. The story parallels our Vietnam fiasco. 2. The cinematography is breathtaking. 3. The score, the score, the score is pure genius. 4. The then Hollywood establishment could not conceive of a musical that wasn't saccharin.
Americans always want their foreign films subtitled. Ironic, when you consider how little we train our students to speak a second language.

I believe tht this movie might be based on true story because of the Algerian War in history. I believe there were a lovers who were forcibly separated due to the reason of Algerian War. I feel quite heartbreaking and heartwrenching scene in this movie. They really deeply loved each others tht they have never had before only the wait of 2 yrs. All was changed. Their true love cant get into marriage and form a happiness family. There is no answer, "Why" will always be a question forever !

@kadvid I believe that in the end Guy and Madeleine are truly in love, the kind of love that lasts. There is genuine affection between them, and even though Madeleine adores him more than he does her, adoration is not enough to sustain a relationship (as we have already seen with Guy and Genevieve. What Guy feels at the end, I believe, is the memory of the intensity of infatuation. It is Genevieve that feels the regret of her decision, as she constantly has the reminder of Guy in her child.
