The day Neil Peart passed my father apologized to me for never taking me to see a Rush show. Less than two years later my father passed. I had given him Neil Peart Illustrated Quotes a week before hoping he would find inspiration in it while he recovered. Now, I use it to find inspiration while I recover from his passing. Thank you Rush. Thank you Pops🤍
I can sort of relate...my Dad died 3 weeks after Neil passed...that was a rough January.

What’s really freaky is when I went to the hospital to the intensive care unit, they told me she was in room number 2112. No bullshit either. I had the nurse repeat the room number just to make sure I heard her correctly
I take it as a sign that everything was going to be okay, despite all of that. Especially when the next day while at her house, I noticed a lone deer lying in the back yard as it was snowing. She lied there from around 7 in the morning until around 230 that afternoon. Deer normally seek cover in the foliage when it’s snowing. But this one lied there out in the snow with no cover
Someone explained to me that the deer was her spirit animal, and for me to witness that was a sign that everything was going to be fine. Later that year, I came into a lot of money unexpectedly. I just wish that the United States was in good condition, unlike now, and all because of that incompetent and incontinent dipshit that calls himself a president that rigged the election. He’ll most definitely go to a fiery place one day

Ok, I'm a flight attendant and have the privilege to meet people. Years ago Tommy Shaw walked on board and I nearly spit my coffee. No one else knew who he was. He was so gracious and we talked for an hour. Long story short I said, "no one compares to Neil Peart." He said, "no one compares to Rush."
My respect for Tommy Shaw just elevated! ;)

40 + year fan here. It just gladdens me so much to see the love these hosers get as I lived through the early days of all the bad press and slander. Rush fans were and still are a tight-knit group of people that always seemed to me to have a little something extra. The band has always been true to themselves, their craft and above all, professionals. I miss those days like fuck.
The chemistry and love between Geddy and Alex is so palpable. I’m sure they are both in terrible mourning right now at time of writing this. RIP Neil Peart.

Yeah, totally agree. Whenever I have seen video of the Rush members together, I have always been struck by the evident friendship they share and continued to share even after 40 years together. We know stories of bands like the Beatles who I think were also mates when they started, but over time, those friendships broke down. That hasn't been the case with Rush and it is warming to see that three guys who made so much fantastic music over many years and have been through so much together are so normal and likeable. Sad for music, sad for Rush fans, sad for drummers and drum geek and I've no doubt so sad for Alex and Geddy to lose their friend Neil.

@@waynemanna1402 So true. As a huge rush fan, my absolute fave thing about them is how they are each a master of their craft, but yet so terribly humble about it. RIP Neil. These 2 goofballs might go off the rails without your voice of reason ;)
@@rklewis2 i pulled a couple of their shows(im a trucker) they were totally cool and laid back to everyone!!! Neil was known to be a little aloof but he just didn't like being put on a pedestal. If you talked to him and treated him like a regular guy he appreciated it greatly!!!
Can you imagine growing up with your best friend. Both being a bit awkward. Discovering musical instruments together, playing them and dreaming of rock stardom. And then meeting Neil and making kickass music for over 40 years? Becoming more successful than most people could even imagine? And still be thick as thieves to this day? How fucking epic is that!? I’m really happy for those dudes. They fucking did it. So sad Neil just recently passed. I’m glad these guys still have each other to lean on in this tough time. RIP Neil Peart. Legendary eternal 🤘🏻

@@colkurtz4102 Nope. They always played what they wanted. Fly By Night was a concept they weren't sure would work, and they were right. But, luckily, the direction they went with 2112, Hemispheres etc got them the fan support that kept the record labels satisfied enough to allow them to forge their own path.
And made great new music for 40 years as opposed to so many other bands that just kept playing the same stuff over and over.

@@colkurtz4102 Bowed? Caress of Steel? A producer or record company drove that? In fact the record company was upset. No. Fly By Night? No. Simply that they finally decided after 2112 that they didn't need a record company anymore to be successful, their talent made a place for them.
Isn't it nice to listen to 2 professional musicians who are so articulate, integral and dedicated to their trade craft. No talk of drug use, womanizing and utter nonsense like 13 year old kids.. Such a pleasure to hear these gentleman describe their wonderful careers. It is so nice to actually learn something about their art form, rather than bloviating egomaniacs acting like spoiled children. Thank you Geddy, Alex.
It doesn't matter that your comment was 3 years ago, what you said was true then, and is still true. Everytime, I watch something different with these guys, I am awed by their humility and grace. As a Vocalist and Bass player myself, and a Rush fan, I feel honoured to have existed on the same planet, in the same time as Geddy, Alex and Neil.
Many thanks to Neil, Geddy and Alex for all of the years of outstanding music. You will never know just how many lives you've touched and changed. And with heavy heart I'm sad to have to say r.i.p. to Professor Peart. You will always live on in the hearts of your fans. Farewell to a King!

Rush is the epitome of class and behave the way I wish more Rock Stars did. Driven by Neil Peart, Rush never cared about fashionable opinion and just did their own thing, brilliantly. Thank you, Neil, as well as Geddy and Alex, for always making music the way you wanted your entire time together. Rest In Peace, Professor

i just love these two guys so much. Geddy, Alex, and Neil are the not only among the very best players and creators in the last 50 years, they are just interesting, great folks .
I am from Grass Lake Michigan. I do not remember the first time that we ever put on a Rush album. 74 or 75 maybe. I do remember WTOL out of Toledo being the first station that we heard them on the radio. My favorite story is about calling WRIF in Detroit. I got thru to the studio line with Arthur Penthollow. Around 78 or so. " Cheek to cheek bone to bone. Thanks for coming inside my radio" . I said " Art we want to here some Rush." He replied sternly to me. " We dont play no Rush man." I was a bit ticked off. I said, " You will soon" and I hung up on him. I will never forget that as long as I live. I am 61 now. Rush will live forever.

My sister introduced me to Moving Pictures. I don't ever remember the radio station playing Rush before that album.

There are few things that bring me as much joy as when I see nice guys succeed massively at obtaining their passion, while retaining the integrity of character, accessibility, and kindness for others that they possessed in the beginning. All three members of Rush are men of that quality, and seeing them recognized for their achievements makes me very happy indeed!

Geddy and Alex MUST start a podcast together. I’m sure there are sooooo many great stories that they’ve never told before. Maybe go in-depth on their albums too. I would love to hear about the entire full process of writing something like the Hemispheres album coming from those two. Plus it would be hilarious for sure. Love those guys (and of course the Professor, RIP), and the world needs some new content about Rush and really diving into the band.

@@jackluminous6024 hey man, there are sooooo many great podcasts these days that you're probably already a podcast guy and don't know it yet lol. If the idea of a Ged and Alex podcast gets you excited, I can guarantee you that there are plenty of other pods that you would find that you like a lot. There is a podcast for like every topic or subject these days, so if you're on a long drive and don't wanna really listen to music, I suggest you try listening to a podcast instead. A lot of them are more or less the same as audiobooks at this point considering all the info you're taking in and processing in your brain. And of course, there are tons of mindless comedy podcasts out there too that will absolutely have you rolling laughing lol try it out sometime man!
Alex Lifeson is an incredibly inspired and inspiring guitarist.
First rock tunes and riffs I learned on guitar, were his. Imagine that.
My older brother turned me on to Priest, Sabbath, and AC/DC and I lived and breathed every bit of it, but the moment I first heard the riff immediately after "And the meek shall inherit the earth".... That was the moment I knew I had to play guitar.

@@lr6884 In my hood, everyone who could get one, got a guitar and started learning to play - because of Rush and all the other greats of the 70's. Hell yeah! It's a great productive out for the kids, learning musical instruments. Today, very few contemporary examples to guide them along.

I was somehow growing slightly away from Rush with Dreamline.
I was fifteen and I was starting to get into other things after a couple of years when I was listening intensely to Rush.
I still felt well attached to them though.
Just exploring.
I avoided Roll the Bones for some years and was properly reintroduced by the mighty
Rush in Rio dvd.
Eventually I was giving the album a proper airing and reappraisal.
The Big Wheel may be the standout track.
There’s an enduring great feeling I get from that one.
With time, I decided that the tracks needed reshuffling to really bring home the lyrical themes and give a clearer arc to a possible mood the album could’ve conveyed.

Roll the Bones
Neurotica
Heresy
Ghost of a Chance
Bravado
Dreamline is where they are in life,
“birds in the last days of spring.”
The Big Wheel harkens back to being a kid.
Where’s My Thing? is more youthful energy preceding the bright music and budding awareness of how lives can be poured down the drain.
Face Up is getting a bit darker as the game of life is engaged,
perhaps with perfectionism, hesitation, a sense of risk, fear, and questioning purpose beginning to set in between Face Up and Neurotica
(“hit the target or you’d better hit the ground”,
“why are we here...because we’re here...”,
“hide in your shell let the world go to hell,
it’s like Russian Roulette to you...”),
Roll the Bones takes it further and into darker territory.
Neurotica nods to the questioning that occurs well into the game of life,
perhaps even questioning participating in the game at all,
and Heresy expands to the wider world’s games being lost with incredibly high stakes
(I like the roulette reference in Neurotica preceding a song about the fall of Communism).
Ghost of a Chance is finding love
“through all that masquerade” and Bravado is the philosophy required in the face of losing it all one day,
which proved to be a day coming way too soon for Neil Peart, RIP.
Maybe I’ve missed the intention behind the song order on this album.
I just prefer it as I’ve reshuffled it.
Guys, Neil has done a ton of interviews. Yes mostly for the drumming fans.
He doesn't buy into the fame. If you want an interview then buy his books.
He talks volumes..literally.

Neil Peart has passed away. Great drummer with a great band and a great ambassador of Canada. He was 67 years old.
I know who he is, well....I owned a Rush record or 3 but its 2021 and everytime I read anything regarding his passing I cry. I think i understand the world lost a great human being

My first two concerts were Permanent Waves tour in Phoenix
March 4, 1980, (.38 Special opening) and Moving Pictures tour in Phoenix April 10, 1981, (Max Webster opening). I was 13 and 14 years old respectively. On June 23, 1981 I saw Ozzy with Randy Rhoads (Motorhead opening). So, the first three concerts I ever saw were pretty cool.
80' was a great year for rock and metal. Blizzard of Oz, Back in Black, Ace of Spades, British Steel JP came out just recently. You know what I'm talking about to be part of that amazing era.
@@markusantonio4866 Yes, still miss those Kerrang magazines I had from those times, 82-87..my Internet of those times, along radio stations from mediumwave (listening to UK AM stations with NWOBHMetal ; )..those times.

I think it's just incredible to have seen them on two different tours from two of their biggest albums exactly a year apart. Those were definitely the days. When I got into them (Power Windows) they had moved to 2 years between shows. But they were an album/tour per year for a while there.
Stole my brothers Exit Stage Left, that was my introduction to the band and i remember thinking what a mystical band as there wasnt internet in them days and i dont remember MTV playing much Rush so they seemed so distant to me as a young child but the album grabbed this ten year old and been a fan since . Thank you Geddy, Alex, Neil( RIP) .

I love these guys and always have since I was 12 listening to my sister's brand new Moving Pictures album for the first time. The rest is history.
I was born in 70 so I was around 12 at that time too. My older sister had the only turntable in the house and she had Moving Pictures too. Man, I would wait until she was out and sneak into her room to listen to her Rush albums. I would try to put everything back just like it was so she wouldn’t know I had been in her room... she always knew! Anyways, I took many a beating from her just to listen to Rush... lol.
@@XHuntinatorX Wow, you and I really have a parallel existence! The only difference is that my sister knew I was using her stereo. I got Archives for Christmas one year and listened to that thing for hours. Luckily my sister was always at her friend's house. Thanks for sharing that! :)
Rush is not a band. They are three Master Bards grooving together. Thank God we live in their time and get to hear their incredible music.

It's always sad that Neil isn't there. Having said that, it's his choice, he's not a jerk about it, he just doesn't want the fame aspect, and it's no surprise that Neil was the one who didn't want to do it anymore - any of it. And that's his right. I for one am grateful for all he gave to us, and if he's Done, I respect that.

The book is incredible. It truly is beautiful. But then, I find most books filled with pictures of guitars beautiful....! This one is very nicely done with really great info and kickass photos. Very classy, just like Geddy.

I'm one of the lucky ones, they played my high school in February 1975. I was able to help carry their gear. Thank you gentlemen for the 40+ years.
So much love for those 2 guys. we all have our heroes. the people that have inspired us, that we admire, that we perhaps try to emulate or that have shaped our lives in some way. Geddy and Alex (and Neal of course) are all that to me.

I was 14 years old living in Cleveland , we were at the local record store and my friend said " Hey, did you hear this band Rush ? He held up the album, I bought it, bought a guitar that year, and I still play professionally to this day.
What a fantastic interview! I would enjoy hearing the two of them do some sort of project again. Don't care what it is, but you can definitely tell the friendship and love for each other stands out above it all. Two fantastic musicians! What a friendship! What a FANTASTIC and OUTSTANDING career these fine musicians had together.
Had another Neil breakdown last night. Of coarse The garden was the clicker. 1978 started the countless hours of Bliss. I never thought twice about how they evolved .NEVER waivered. Loved every album, every one!!! Thank you guys!
His death was the only performer that I actually wept when I heard the news of his passing.

Through Clockwork Angels in 2012.

alex is the nicest most respectful guy, enjoying the moments, allowing his pal to run the show, these guys are a class act, canadien excellence here folks, and i live in the states, been a fan for 41 years,. since 1979,.
Alex and Geddy are the most down to earth people there are .They had great parents who new what hardship and work we're. These were the last few great generations.
Love these guys!! Never forget meeting Alex in Toronto and how he spent minutes speaking with me, even when his wife wanted him to move along, he wanted to finish his comments, as my Husband had met him in the past and he reflected a bit about that:)
That's awesome! An author friend of mine was very close to Mr. Peart. Hearing stories of shows my friend Kevin had seen and some stories of Mr. Peart just gave me even more respect for and interest in all things Rush. I'd always been more a casual fan prior to that.

I'm not sure if anyone is still reading these comments. But I wanted to say, in reference to RUSH's induction into the US Rock and Roll hall of fame. I've watched this speech a couple times and I watched it a third time a few days ago. But when it came to Alex's speech, I sped it up. I almost laughed myself off the couch. I wish the audio would increase in pitch like it used to. I'm sure there's some software out there that can do it. He would sound exactly like the minion Stuart.
It's so great to see 2/3 of one of the greatest bands of all time be such close friends for over 45 years. I respect them as players, musicians, songwriters, and as friends.
Ever since I saw Alex Lifeson on Trailer Park Boys episdode "Closer to the Heart" I laugh my ass off every time...he is a great sport. If you haven't seen that yet do your self a favor.

Knowing what I know now, it speaks volumes about the love and respect Alex and Geddy have for Neil that they could appear publicly and protect Neil's privacy the way they did. My love and appreciation for Rush increased exponentially from this.
Who else out there shares the same favorite Rush song as me...it is whichever one I am currently listening to!

Now that'd be an interesting twist... but these three have pretty explicitly stated that Rush will never include any member changes/replacements.

I stumbled upon this great interview , absorbed every moment as a graceful homage, so well done folks . They made themselves at home and you could revibe the gathering .
Saw Rush in 76 for the first time and they blew me away, couldn't believe this much music was being played by 3 guys. Saw them a couple years later after that then being that I had a busy life I didn't see them until 96 and they were even better. Two of the most genuine gentlemen in rock and roll. Their personalities and just so buddy like and they speak to you as if they know who you are. Just an absolute joy to see that money and fame didn't change these guys. Thanks to all three for all the rocking music over the past 40 plus years.

It's amazing that we even have Geddy Lee, considering his parents were Jewish Holocaust survivors from Poland who had survived the ghetto in Starachowice (where they met), followed by their imprisonments at Auschwitz and later Dachau and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps during the Holocaust and World War II.
And if thats not enough? They were separated at some point, where his mother was transferred to Bergen-Belsen and his father to Dachau. After the camps were liberated, his father searched for his mother at the Bergen-Belsen displaced persons camp...... And FOUND HER!

I am a big fan of Rush's music, though I wouldn't say I was a fanatic - I have a lot of their stuff and have seen them live. What has always struck me about them is what DECENT people they seem to be, totally lacking egos and big star mentality. Their fans as well - I would have no worries about my daughters being in the mosh pit at a Rush gig.
The word fan is short for fanatic.
The word loon is short for lunatic.

It was a long overdue induction. These guys were already legends back in the '70s.
Seeing them in 1979 at 16 and seeing them now reminds me how precious time is and also how fuckin’ old I am! Best band ever.

So how about getting The Guess Who into the HOF???? Rush had to wait long enough. Don't get me started on Triumph, April Wine, Lighthouse, Bachman Turner Overdrive etc etc etc
These guys still have so much heart, love, energy, and wit despite their age and the fact the union that made them legendary rockstars is no more. They'll all be best buds till' the day they die.
These 3 virtuosos, lifelong friends after 40 years of touring, also shared something that taken together into a concept was magical.
The band was a rarity among rarities- 3 guys that have been accused of actually being 5 or more players. The band grew into an entity that obviously was more than the sum of its parts; but the parts of the whole persistently improved their craftsmanship, over the decades, to consistently challenge their audience with exposure to different types of musical expression as their interests changed over the years.
i want to say to Geddy and Lerxst that the journey they took was worth an uncountable fortune for many of their fans - and i thank you guys for being thoughtful enough to let us all come along with you. Just wish Neil could have hung on a bit longer.

Well, when you just play by ear and don't read music - that is understandable. IIRC, neither Alex or Geddy could read much music. It was in their being.

These 3 musicians are not only one of the legends of their instruments They are articulate well spoken and innovators of a style of music that stands alone. The music they play with 3 men is amazing I've seen bands with 5 or more artist's that' can't reproduce it.

Had the pleasure of meeting Geddy at a book signing he did in Pittsburgh last December before the world ended. He’s such a warm and gracious character. Love these guys so much. RIP PROFESSOR
We can enjoy...the work this band has made for us...Mr Neil Peart...lives on in his body of work...by far the greatest drummer in the world....

I was actually lucky enough to play at the HOF. I was in a band out of Columbus, and we had a chance to play at a private party at the Hall. Makes me proud I can say that I played at the place where my favorite band is inducted!

Alex has had roles in the Canadian TV series, Trailer Park Boys and the movie of same name and spinoff "Out of the Park" Yes , he is the funniest guy of the three!!
