If I could only choose three foods to stockpile, I would choose wheat grain, dried lentils and oil packed canned tuna or oil-packed clams. Wheat grain has a lot more vitamins and other nutrients than does white rice. It also has plenty of dietary fiber. The wheat can be soaked overnight and then simmered just like brown rice or it can be ground into whole wheat flour to make flat bread cooked in a skillet on a camp stove or some of the grain can be sprouted to make vitamin-rich greens that can be eaten raw or cooked. Being able to sprout wheat to make raw greens is an alternative to being able to cultivate a vegetable garden or forage for edible wild greens because it is winter and too cold for the edible plants to grow. The lentils do not need overnight soaking and cook the quickest of the edible legume seeds (such as beans and peas). It is the oil in the canned tuna or clams that interests me. You need some fat in your diet to help metabolize some nutrients and canned fat will probably store a bit longer than cooking oil packaged in plastic bottles. I would also look for a brand of oil-packed tuna or oil-packed clams that has some salt because you do need some salt in your diet.
@annalynn9325 Generally that is true - the fat in whole grains is what gives brown rice such a shorter shelf life that white rice. However, rolled oats and wheat grain can easily store for 20 years if packaged in Mylar or metal cans along with oxygen absorbers and kept in a cool dry location. And both of those are whole grains.
My daughter was in ICU for months. I bought a bunch of those foil pouches of tuna to "sneak " eat in ICU. After she passed away, I found them. They were 3 years expired. I enjoyed eating everyone of them. They are fine as long as there is no puncture in the outside.
In a worst-case apocalyptic scenario, grains may not be that available, because of shutdown of farms and harsh competition for stockpiling them. Most factories producing anything might shut down, too. Canned goods will easily run out. Anything consummable, will. What I can think about the most in survrival is producing supplies yourself. Prepping by stockpiling seeds for future gardening may be a part of the solution. Learning most of the important things in surviving, purifying water for drinking, making tools from available materials, etc. that one can do from the ground up will help a lot.

@@Deborah-u3h To prevent scurvy, you must have some citrus in your diet. That's why British sailors had the nickname of Limeys -- their Navy learned to keep a supply of limes on board to prevent the sailors from getting scurvy. I think rickets was due to a lack of calcium. My overall point is that humans need a varied diet to stay healthy over a long period of time. The problem with rice and beans is that they take a lot of water and fuel to prepare. You can use up all of your water reserves in no time just cooking that stuff every day.

I listened u til 10:15. AI; through good suggestions there is not enough protein to sustain life for a long period of time. Most do not know how to cook, let alone fish. How long before all the fish are consumed, Months n just a few. Humans have been eating meat longer than vegetables. Vegetarian people struggle with health issues due to not enough natural proteins. The processed foods they eat are all GMOs which doesn't have any natural vitamins and minerals. So The bidy can survive on these food but will never prosper due to lethargic n depression. A wide variety of foods are needed to sustain a healthy life. Processed foods isn't one of them. But thanks for the suggestion
I am a retired chef and food rep for 47 years. If you combine rice and beans or rice and whey from something like yogurt it makes a complete protein. I believe your comment may be incorrect.
Correct we every day need some animal fats and protein. Yet if we cut the carbs we start burning the fat in the cells for energy. Even a little of fasting is good for a while.
If the fertilizer hits the ventilator I won't be baiting hooks - that's the time for a good net. That way you pick the best one and let the small ones back to grow. That's if the fish during WWIII are fit to eat. I have cases of canned fish stored if they aren"t. And never forget - Soylent Green is people :) .
We need a lot of different vitamins, so hopefully we don't have this diet but for a short emergency. Rice has a lot of heavy metals. If I eat it I rinse it well. But white rice can sometimes 'get too solid' even with beans, for me. Also, it can raise my blood sugar a bit fast.
I can't agree with your choices. Fish is the only reasonable one then add eggs and meat. On a carnivore diet people lose weight have energy and heal problems cutting out sugar processed foods grains and veggies. I have been a carnivore for a year and my health is good
Keep in mind that in a true collapse, millions upon millions will be hunting and fishing. Fish are not as easy to "store" as beans and rice. I can tell you as a fact, a certain fishing spot in Colorado will be a death sentence for anybody who isn't a recognized friend.
Some of the info in this is outdated such as the necessity of complementary proteins. Consider Spudfit who thrived on a year of only potatoes as well as others who have done similar diets. And although fish may be enjoyed by many, there are other easier ways of obtaining omega 3s.
Mainly raw salted - check 1800s sea voyage suppies? The same for meat. Mild pickling provides cabbage all year round - sauerkraut - German recipes? Strong picking or sugar preserving for fruit - including tomatoes, South African sweet jam. So finding sources of malt/wine vinegar, sugar substitute honey and salt... that last one is obviously going to be difficult in society breakdown situations; at one time it was elevated to the status of money! I don't think we can evaporate our oceans to use the sea salt, but I am not sure.
rice in a real crisis no good- water will be wasted - it needs to be for drinking, toileting- not wasting for cooking, and also what about cooking methods in a real crisis- maybe vaccuumed packaged cooked rice ? next, canned meat and peanut butter for fats and energy- so now that is three things

The world is now better off than a century ago. Nutritious food is more easy to get. Safe drinking water is more accesable . Storage of food much improved. So why paint such a pessimistic picture.?
Ah, the pessimism is because as food becomes scarce; due to changes in weather patterns and governments destroying traditional farming methods for zero carbon ideals, civil unrest might cause societies to breakdown, as also happens during wars - we don't want ANY of those at the moment; so if governments were actually trying to maximise food production at the moment to deal with the threats that currently exist as regards food growing, there would be no wars - so, the breakdown of society stops food being grown, processed and distributed. White rice is a forever food (if stored correctly) because whole grains contain fats that go rancid in time. But yes, white rice is empty calories

You can stockpile canned sardines & tuna. These come in several flavours bringing in the required variety in an otherwise monotonous diet.
You can also dry spices and herbs for flavor in your bland and boring meal
They are also relatively inexpensive and last a long time.
Protein is a very good energy source for the body. So don't be stuck on carbohydrates.
Rice,beans,Fish!
You failed to mention that brown rice has a much lower shelf life.
Freeze or refrigerate!!! It’s healthier!
I’ve had uncooked rice go rancid. Not sure I’d rely on it in cases of no power.
Without carbs, your body switches to using fat as fuel.
CARBS, RICE IS NOTHING BUT CARBS!!!!!!!!!!
Grouper, cod, wild caught salmon and tuna
Rice Beans Fish
I will add a No. 4 to your survival list. It's not a 'food'. It's drinking water.
Actually it's #1. A lack of drinking water will kill you much faster.
