Excellent video Cliff. I'm a bit skeptical about it being a true Faraday cage. If that were true that a m signal would have been totally blocked out. With that said it probably provides enough attenuation on higher frequencies like gps, bt, wifi, 3g, 4g, 5g, .., to keep you safe. If your privacy concerns were critical, I would double bag the mobile network enabled devices.
Thanks for watching! Yeah, the AM signal still can be heard from time to time in that video segment. I do a lot of work with big data and you are 100% correct, the tracking is incredibly ridiculous from almost everywhere now a days. I think it's a huge invasion of privacy and also makes you very vulnerable to fraud as well. Now the tricky part is, you can't just "go dark" when you go in somewhere - it's too smart for that. The algorithms they use could use deductive reasoning to say - you went dark at place X, and they know your habits already. So it doesn't take much AI and machine learning to say you probably went to this place. So the tricky part is, you have to do this when you are at home before you leave so they are truly in the dark and there is no breadcrumbs to follow. The worst part is everyone, everywhere is constantly gathering data - so even if you do go dark , they can track you through your friends and family. So it really is hard to be anonymous these days. You could go hide out in the woods for ten years and they would probably still have a profile on you. Now that said, what I think is helpful that you can do is adjusting a number of settings - disable personalized ad tracking wherever possible, use ad-blockers, turn off wifi, bluetooth, and GPS in public settings. To beat the computers, you also have to think like a computer and computers are not very good if you give it bad data. So what I like to do is put garbage in the data - do some weird searches, click on random ads that have nothing to do with you, and put in bad data into forms. That's actually one of my favorite methods for beating the tracking and works well :)

These bags are more for attenuating the signal than blocking it completely. AM radio is a lower frequency than GPS, 4G, etc. I imagine that some of the 4G network packets made it through too, but not enough to produce any type of cohesive data (e.g., playing a video, finding a GPS location, etc).
An EMP is a theoretical phenomenon. Yes, an EMP can theoretically occur under very specific circumstances. But chances are that it won't. As in ever. Only in fiction EMPs are something to worry about 😄
@@sylla2 In 1857 a sun flare aka EMP hit the South Western USA. It burnt up telegraph wires from Colorado to California and all the way down to Texas. It took months to replace the wires.
Airplane mode works pretty well. At the very least encrypt a sin card to store your data on too. That is 1000x better than not having access to recording functions.
Watched a show about 10 years ago with ex CIA agents telling guests you can never be "off". They said "they" can monitor your laptop even if it's turned off as long as it's plugged in the electrical outlet.
The issue with the dolphin/whale approach is that “they”can see you disappear and reappear. They aren’t stupid. I think a better option is to turn the phone completely off, or to simply leave it at home (or wherever). Maybe consider a “dumb” phone that has no gps/WiFi/etc
Keep your notifications disabled except for a select few apps like messaging. For sure keep location settings off unless needed. I never get ads like that anymore. BTW i do use Farady bags at time as well but not as much. Great vid as always...
Even with the GPS turned off they still can track the phone via the cell towers. It has also been shown that they can remotely turn on things on your phone.

Woohoo! Love all the tests you put this through. People say, you just need to put your phone in airplane mode, and then turn your phone off. I do not believe this. (If there's still a bit of juice in the battery, depending on the phone model, it CAN be tracked.) A dark bag adds one more layer of security.
To answer a lot of the questions here, no, turning off location services is not the same at all. It is a software setting that is easily and regularly overridden by kernel permissions on your phone or low-level operating system activities. As an example, If you have any sort of settings on your Apple, Google account or Samsung or whatever for finding your phone if it is lost or stolen, that is just one way. It overrides location tracking the same way it overrides the volume settings when you click the option to ring your phone even if it is silenced. As another example, it doesn't matter how private you make your phone, every time you dial 911 it in the minimum dumps information on the tower you are connected to and ideally start spamming your GPS coordinates as well and can be regularly refreshed manually by an operator polling for phase 2 location data. All of the carriers and network operator virtual or physical, have the capabilities to do a number of operating system level things on your phone. And on top of all of that, your phone is constantly giving away enough information about where it's at to get a decent idea of your location and direction of travel because if it didn't do that you wouldn't be able to connect to the towers at all and the towers will not be able to hand your call to the next one as you're driving down the road or walking or whatever. So, disabling location services will help increase your privacy and shield some of your activity from the kind of apps that harvest this kind of data, but that is only if it is not malicious and they are following the rules and your respective app store has fully vetted the program. Just because you went online and deleted your Google location history and turned off Google tracking does it mean they still don't have that information obtained from a roundabout (albeit legal) alternative method. If you truly want that phone to disappear off of the map for any period of time and for any reason, you need to make sure it cannot connect to the network at all, anyone's network even if it is for a carrier who you do not have an account with. That means completely blocking the band of frequencies that your phone uses. I am not advocating for any manufacturer of bag in particular, but you have to be careful. In this case you can imagine RF energy as behaving like light. If there are any gaps or low-quality seams large enough for tiny high high-frequency radio waves to leak through then it is pointless. I am not concerned with the fact that the bag in this video still can pick up some AM signals because I would use this bag for blocking signal from my cell phone which it works perfectly for. So you should have a clear understanding of what you are trying to defend against. Tracking? EMP? Or both? With that being said, don't accept fact from me, some random person on the internet, take a look at EMP research (both theoretical and factual), and get an idea of the frequencies involved. Some types of shielding is great for generators and electric motors and micro transistors, but some shielding is also simply for blocking certain type of RF without much of a consideration for EMP frequencies and the extreme energy involved. There is some overlap in higher quality materials but that's to the point where I need to start researching more myself. Some applications are going to be small, light, portable, and specialized while other applications may have heavy shielding materials and permanent grounding to the Earth. Just depends what you're looking for, there is rarely ever a one-size-fits-all solution due to cost or practicality.
As others have mentioned, these bags are more for attenuating the signal than blocking it completely. AM radio is a lower frequency than GPS, 4G, etc. I imagine that some of the 4G network packets made it through too, but not enough to produce any type of cohesive data (e.g., playing a video, finding a GPS location, etc).
You can also use Fake GPS or similar apps to spoof location. Unless I have a specific need for location based apps, I always have one of these running when traveling. And it's also just fun to use. It won't work for actual calls, only data, since calls are based on cell tower location.
Is that a Spigen case on your smartphone? 7:30 I was going to ask about airplane mode, then I noticed you mentioned how a smartphone can still be tracked, so I did a quick search on the subject. From what I've found so far, tracking under airplane mode depends on the GPS being on, so I'd guess using airplane mode + turning GPS off would both cut off communication with any antennae (4G, wifi, bluetooth, etc.) as well as keep your device from finding out where it is - of course, it can still use its sensors (e.g., accelerometer, compass) to gather some data, but those would still work even inside a Faraday cage anyway. Would that suffice or am I still missing something?
My phone only turned on when I want to use it - do I still need one? It's off all the time unless I'm expecting a text or want to text/call someone. I work at home so my business land line is what I use and I hate talking on a cell while I'm shopping or driving so I just take it with me for emergency use. I use the camera and text pictures - that's about it!! WIFI and internet is always off.

. .are you still big on this bag because it’s been since May 2020 with the release of this vid, so has the bag continued to live up to your expectations or is there a next generation bag that you like better than this one ? Also, is there a stock number or name for this bag? There are are so many different models on the market and it’s easy to be confused over the many bags/features. . Thanks for the vid and I’ll look forward to your response!
I think this is really cool. I do have one issue that maybe you can speak on. Even though it can't track you while its in the bag, if you still just continue your daily routine, what difference does it make? You're still going to be at the same places each and everyday.
You can make a Faraday bag by going to the c-store and buying a bag of chips (not one with a window) and asking for a plastic shopping bag. Drop the device into the plastic bag, and then drop the plastic bagged device into the chip bag and the roller crimp the top. If it doubled as a dry bag it'd be better.... Also, it's allot better to deal with this by being pickier about your electronic devices and what runs on them. Like, a laptop with the Intel Management Engine neutered and the UEFI stripped out and running a good Linux distro isn't going to be transmitting your location without authorization. It's harder with phones. But on Android at least you can disable assisted GPS, which slows down acquisition time and increases power consumption but reduces the privacy risk. Also be very picky about what apps get what permissions. The permissions system in Android sucks, plenty of apps that don't ask for network access clearly have network access, and if you allow an app file system access but not GPS access it can still read your GPS sensor it just can't turn it on
Thanks Cliff. Mine will arrive tomorrow :) I found the tracking very creepy too - actually scary! I started getting phone calls when I returned home..... it all had to be related somehow.. I actually had been simply turning my phone off when I left home; don't know if that works or not - but it was inconvenient. Hoping this will help me too
Great! Yeah, I hate feeling like I am always being tracked and listened too. Even if you only use this from time to time (while shopping), just to throw things off a bit, it is a win for me. I don't want a complete trail of my whereabouts.
That was a little Prepper Rap video that I did a few months back. I added the video to the End Card of this video if you want to check it out. It's called "Today Is A Prep Day".
Hi UP! I watch this video for the first time when you uploaded this. And i wanted to get my own MD Faraday bag. I Have read a few reviews and about this products over this pass year. Sorry but I really dont see the point. Isn't the off switch enough? Turning it off has the added advantage of increasing battery life, compared with a faraday bag which I would imagine increases battery consumption because the phone will be constantly searching for a connection, cell, data, wifi etc.....
Strongly recommend all the viewers also visit Dr. Bradley's disasterprepper channel. He has a video done also on the same topic. He was able to test each product with his own electromagnetic radiation emitter.
Am I pointing at the elephant in the room or have I missed something, would turning your phone off not do the same thing and also save your battery as it won’t be constantly working overtime trying to find a signal? This isn’t a criticism I’m just not sure.
Like most things, it isn't as simple as it sounds. Generally speaking, yes, the phone should not be tracked when off. However, the complex answer is your phone could have an implant from the NSA, it could have an older piece of hardware, an extra chip, an app, or other things that could actually bypass the phone being off and allow it to still being tracked.
The problem with this: You can‘t receive any calls while the phone is in the bag. So if something happens and your partner or a family member needs to reach you urgently, it will not work!
@Evocati Not at all true. It really is as simple as just turning the phone off. No juice, no signal in or out. They stop making phones with removable batteries so they could make them smaller and use more advanced cooling technology for the lithium ion cells. You could also make the argument that it means you have to have them replace the battery when it wears down which is true, but most people just end up getting new phones before that happens anyway. I like the idea of having one of these bags for EMP protection but there's really no reason to get one otherwise, and EMP's are so theoretical in their damage that who know's if these would even work
You wanna hear something creepy? I was at my parents house talking about a particular mattress they wanted to purchase. How about later on thay night I was on a social media site and that exact mattress was being advertised. I didn't Google it or anything... Yeah, it's time to go dark.

The permissions system in Android sucks, plenty of apps that don't ask for network access clearly have network access, and if you allow an app file system access but not GPS access it can still read your GPS sensor it just can't turn it on
Can you charge your phone while using these..??? I’ve never heard of these, but it seems more private.
Interesting and good to be prepared for sure. But, one could also just turn the devices off until needed?
Can you put your phone in one of these and go thru TSA check? or do you have to remove them when going thru security?
I have one too and love it. I've also done some similar testing with the same results.
A vehicle registered in your name, can be tract via the vehicle's onboard electronics. So much for Faraday cages for vehicles.
That probably only works for newer vehicles I’d imagine.
@@antigov7591 1995 model year and newer.
There has to be a way for vehicles
Thanks for the video great stuff. That would be great for ham radio protection
Definitely great for that purpose!
My smart phone and watch cpuld go in 1 bag then I'd have to put my tablet in a larger bag. At 3:49 what song were you listening to?
That was a little Prepper Rap video that I did a few months back. I added the video to the End Card of this video if you want to check it out. It's called "Today Is A Prep Day".
Hi UP!
I watch this video for the first time when you uploaded this. And i wanted to get my own MD Faraday bag.
I Have read a few reviews and about this products over this pass year. And few reviwes stats that the sheilds on the dags stops working after a few months.
Does your bags still working?
/Commander
Won’t this kill your battery as the phone constantly tries to find a signal?
Please do more offgrid videos please👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I can look into it! Thanks for watching!
Very cool! I'll have to get some. Thanks! :)
Please fix video title it says bay and not bag.
Ugh! I can't believe I messed that up. Fixed. Thank you!
Excellent review. Now for Faraday hats, please!
Tin foil hats work.
These are awesome, would get a lot of use by me. They're not as cool as the the Travel Johns though. Thanks for the demonstration, take care!!
Thanks a bunch, 2/3! Yeah, the TravelJohn's are for #1. :)
So, how many times did you set off your car alarm while feeling around for the button?
@Evocati 😂 I'm such a dork.Remind me not to comment when I've been up for 38 hrs. I'd better go check my Amazon purchases history, make sure I didn't order anything more than the phone bag. Then check my Twitter account. (Snicker)
What about just turning your phone off
So, it didn't kill the AM radio...ummm why is that..it is supposed to be absolutely nothing but static.
I guess i'm screwed, my aicd/pacemaker has GPS 😂😂😂
Why?
Thats terrifying...
I do not understand spending money on a bag while the phone can be switched off.
Shut the phone when in the bag or the battery will die trying to find a signal.
Good point! I was going to mention this.
What kind of material do you need to make a Faraday bag yourself?
You can use some foil.
Plz reply. If you win $100000 what would you buy for prepping
Have you had any issues with those bags and tsa? Wondering it creates strange results when bags are scanned
Yes I had problems...I have the duffel bag... The x-ray could not see through it
Will it block 5G
Can they track you if the phone is turned off?
Yes. I wouldn't trust it unless the battery was removed. There's some super interesting RUclips videos out there on the subject.
Thx. I often put in airplane mode to speed up recharging. Do you think the tablet size would be big enough for a phone & a hand held ham radio?
@@karinhart489 Yes. They would both fit.
Thanks Cliff!!
Never heard of this but you sold one to me.
Cliff nice product thanks for an other informative video
I don’t care about tracking. Inevitable and too much to worry about. I do however like to keep comms in a faraday for EMP.
No options for buying in the UK?
Really? Ouch. :(
@@TheUrbanPrepper No worries. Looks a great product.
But what if a family member has an emergency and can't reach you?
True. If you want to be available 24/7, be prepared to be tracked 24/7. Personally, I have times during the day that I am unavailable via cell phone.
What was the type of backpack was shown in this video?
Vertx Gamut 2.0
Can’t I just turn off my location and achieve the same thing?
Sorry but I really dont see the point. Isn't the off switch enough? Turning it off has the added advantage of increasing battery life, compared with a faraday bag which I would imagine increases battery consumption because the phone will be constantly searching for a connection, cell, data, wifi etc.....
unless you can remove the battery - there have been hacks to phones even when powered off - this before smartphones.
It took 24 seconds. I think I'm going to buy it.
However, the complex answer is your phone could have an implant from the NSA, it could have an older piece of hardware, an extra chip, an app, or other things that could actually bypass the phone being off and allow it to still being tracked.
they need that in a purse if they're smart, and designs
Just now ordered one, good by.............. .. .
The problem with this: You can‘t receive any calls while the phone is in the bag. So if something happens and your partner or a family member needs to reach you urgently, it will not work!
...then don't put it in the bag...?
Rogue Preparedness When not putting it in the bag, then what for the bag???
Excellent; thanks!
Could just switch your phone off
@Evocati You are going to have to substantiate this claim. You can put a frequency counter on a turned off phone and see that it is not emitting.
You'll have to remove the battery.
@Evocati, how about pulling the sim card?
I had the same freaken experience a few times. I have no idea maybe it was a coincidence. Idk. But your not the only one this happened to.
Faraday bags are superb.
:)
Wouldn’t it be easier and cheaper if you turn your phone off??
Mayby its more easier ton get rid of cellular.
Why don't you turn the phone off instead?
Even when a phone is off or in that bag the phone still has a gyroscope which save data and updates GPS when connects to signal.
Excellent topic and video, 👍🏻
I read that if you double up chip bags that it will have the same effect. May be worth checking out.
