      I had friend growing up who said her biggest aspiration was to be a professional sniper in the Army. Then when I ran into her years later, she said she passed on that because she realized just how little sniping a sniper actually does. It’s mostly staying still for fucking days at a time and calculating and recalculating mathematical variables that could throw off your shot constantly. She trains dogs at an obedience school now instead.

    There's a lot of subtle things in these films that I love. Like when John gives Francis "the night off". John asks him if he's lost weight. The subtitles say the response is in pounds, but Francis answers in kilograms and the amount of kilograms he says he lost amounts to the number of guards inside of the club.
    Also, the rule of the continental is no business can be conducted on the property, however, when John is fighting Perkins and the concierge calls, he asks John if he could use a "dinner reservation" which is code for the clean up crew as you saw after the first gun fight. So in other words the concierge knew what was going on and was giving John Wick permission to kill Perkins in the continental property because he knew she was breaking the rules. It's very subtle and most people don't catch it, took me a couple of watches to notice that was happening.

    • @StevesFunhouse
      @StevesFunhouse Год назад +2

      That's actually not correct, or even NEAR correct. It's obvious ... John TOLD him that he had been taking care of an uninvited guest. The concierge, knowing John, would assume that, since he's talking to him in that moment, the problem had already been resolved, and THAT'S what told him to ask about the need for a "dinner reservation".
      He wasn't giving permission because 1) he knew he didn't NEED to, since he was assuming the "guest" was already dead (hence the ability to have a civil, unimpeded conversation) and 2) he cannot give such "approval" because that would be breaking the Continental's INTERNATIONAL Rules, and he's NOT the owner, nor does he even have that discretion/option at his disposal.
      Nice imagination though ...NOT. Sorry 🙏.

    Here is a few things that some people miss. Daisy was John's wife's favorite flower, it was on the cups, her bracelet that john had next to the dog's collar, and on the note that came with the dog and she named the dog Daisy. When he was ordering dinner reservations for 12 he was telling the cleaning crew that there was 12 bodies. When Francis, outside the Red Circle, was talking to John he was not let go because they were friends, Francis told him how many guards were there. He told John he had lost 27 kilo, so 27 guards. The dog at the end he chose because, on his paperwork on the kennel stated he was to be put down.

    The sequels have been great. "John Wick 4" is scheduled for release in the U.S. on March 24, 2023. Keanu Reeves is reported to have bought a Rolex watch for every member of his "John Wick 4" stunt team. As much as I the movies themselves, I also enjoy hearing the behind the scenes stories from cast and crew about how nice Keanu Reeves is.

    • @hanng1242
      @hanng1242 Год назад +6

      I think the sequels were only OK. What makes the action good in the original is that it does a good job taking the character up to the line of "total badass," without crossing over into superhero territory. We see that while Wick is a very dangerous person, he is still human - he can be taken by surprise, he can be hurt, he can be rendered incapacitated, and he needs help from his friends. Moreover, the fights in the original were used judiciously, and didn't overstay their welcome. I think that in the sequels, the filmmakers went too far, making the fights too long and too "Hollywood" (for lack of a better word), and turned John Wick into James Bond. We feel little tension in Bond movies because we know he will always make it out of tight situations, it is just a question of how (skills, luck, or sex). I got a similar feeling in the John Wick sequels, whereas in the original movie, even though I knew that he would eventually make it (because I knew there were sequels), I nevertheless felt like he was in real danger in the moment.
      I also think the sequels jumped the shark on the world-building. The world-building in the original was excellent - there no exposition (except a little in the beginning to establish that John Wick is to be feared, but lets the rest of the movie show us why), but the audience was quickly able to understand that there was a powerful and secret community of free-lance assassins, and there was a whole economy dedicated to providing services for the same. We know that it has a special currency that it uses for money. We know that the Continental has significant enough power and/or contacts that it can get information as quickly as it takes to make a drink, and that it is powerful and/or respected enough to set rules, the breaking of which is unacceptable to those of the community who want to remain in the community (I think it can be assumed from Perkins' phone call to Vigo about Marcus that she believed that she would be moving from freelancer to in-house assassin, and counted on that to protect her).
      As the sequels explained more and more about this world, it diminished it by removing some the the mystery that made it cool. The second film took the Continental global - which was cool, but did we really need to have a High Table that seems to control everything? What was an interesting community of people with particular sets of skills became the Illuminati that secretly controls the world. I won't spoil any more for the sake of those who have yet to watch the sequels, but what the original does well that the sequels do not is that it keeps the story personal such that we can identify with the characters' motivations. The Matrix franchise suffers from this same problem, which is why the Matrix continues to be interesting whereas the sequels are pedestrian action movies with delusions of philosophy.

Also, you picked up on something that has bothered me: everyone knows who John Wick is.....except Vigo's son??!! Seems unlikely, but then there'd be no story.
    You absolutely HAVE to see the 2nd & 3rd "chapters". #4 is scheduled to come out in March of next year, & a 5th movie is also on its way.
    As I'm sure others have told you, Keanu Reeves did all of his own stunts, fighting & gunplay, except for getting hit by cars & falling from heights. He trained hard for months for this role. Unlike many movies, this series accurately shows having to reload when using guns.

      John has been retired for 5 years, so none of the very young guys know who he is first-hand. Plus, Vigo doesn't strike me as the kind of person who'd tell stories about someone who was more dangerous than he himself unless he absolutely had to since it would undermine his own power. And such stories told by anyone else would have been ignored by the son because his father has always been the source of all power in his life; with his father's backing, he believed himself to be invincible.

By "asking" Marcus to kill John, Vigo's effectively saying, "Either you kill John yourself, or I'll remove you myself from the equation." Marcus had no choice but to agree to take the contract & he knew it. So he tracked John, made it look like he had a couple near misses, when in reality he was expertly helping John. Vigo didn't realize Marcus would do that. Marcus paid for his loyalty to John with his life.

    The Hotels are a front for the criminal underworld. Essentially, they're universal "safe houses". Neutral ground where anyone can go to lay low, and not have to look over their shoulder. Hence, the rules where no "business" can be conducted on the premises. But, as a front, they also have to be ostensibly open to the public, which is why the shady backroom door that costs a coin to get in.
    Hypothetically, if such places existed, you or I could get a room there. It would probably be stupid-expensive, but it would obviously be very nice, and is literally the safest place in the world. The irony of being safer than anywhere else in the midst of a bunch of killers, is pretty extreme, and I love it.
    And yes, in spite of Perkins' betrayal, it's still the safest place anywhere, because in any normal hotel, it would've been way worse. It cost 4 million to get her to do it, and she still failed because she had no help. It's also a bit of a tip-off that Marcus was never a threat, because had Marcus shot him...Marcus would be the one breaking the rules. Which is also why he didn't shoot her...because same problem. But it's still up in the air at that point, because he might've only been warning John to make sure someone else didn't get the bounty.
    This movie isn't "perfect" by any stretch, but it's abnormally well done, and definitely one of the top action movies of all time. The characters, the world-building, the cinematography...and obviously the action. All definitely top-tier. Hardly any other action movie has as compelling a story, or as rich a world, as the JW franchise.

      @donwild50 Год назад

      They aren't really "coins" as in money. They are made of gold but you don't spend them, per se. They're more like "tokens." A token pays for a favor. Taking away 12 bodies is 12 coins. Opening a door is 1 coin. One night in the Continental is 1 coin. There is a scene where a new shipment are delivered and each one is a work of art. When Marcus is offered 2 million dollars for killing John, Vigo is talking about money...but it would be in money, not one of the "tokens." You can buy things in the real world with money, but getting a "Continental Service" costs a token...and only members use them.

    Hey there! I'm Russian and I would like to share a couple of thoughts regarding the quality of Russian in the movie because it's a complicated matter. What I mean is they speak with absolutely horrible accents like they're not even trying to sound Russian. For a common person in Russia it would be super hard to understand what they're saying. From the grammar point of view everything is correct. They even got the swearing on point.
    But! There's one thing that makes every single Russian who is watching this movie dying of laughter. They have fucked up John's nickname. They are referring to him as "the Boogieman" but for some reason they are not using the Russian word for it. We don't have a character like Boogieman in Russia but we have a similar one. We call him "Babayka" (spelled Бабайка). But in the movie they call him "Baba Yaga" (spelled баба Яга). This is hilarious and ridiculous at the same time because first of all "Baba Yaga" is an old witch who lives in a hut that stands on chicken legs. The word "baba" actually means "old lady". Yaga is her name. So basically there's an old witch who lives in the woods and her name is "granny Yaga". I understand "baba Yaga" and "Babayka" (баба Яга & Бабайка) sound similarly yet the meaning is totally different. So seeing a badass hitman who is killing people left and right with the name "grandma Yaga" is funny as hell.

      This is debatable. When they "hit" the dog, I heard what sounded like a neck bone snapping. The dog went silent. Dead dogs tend to not crawl, not even a little. It seems to me (& many others) that someone shoved the dog up to John's face with the side of their foot, so it would be the first thing John sees when he regains consciousness. That seems like just the kind of thing Iosef would do, as if to say, "THIS is the price for the car".
