This was played at one of my friends funeral when I was 16. Went to bed feeling unwell , never woke up . His name was Micheal , and this song gets me still 17 years later . Love ya Mike , I still think about you daily my brother .
My other half lost a brother at that age. We are elderly now, and the sorrow is still in his face when he talks about him. Forever young, like your friend/brother. I'm so sorry.

We will not forget your people's generosity during our famine( British genocide) when I first heard of the shipments of food that were sent I discovered some went to Dundalk, which would not be far from were my ancestors we at that time... so much thanks..✌
The Turkish sultan offered £12,000 (£500k today) but the British crown refused to allow it. So he sent several ships full of food, the British tried to sink them but all the ships made it to drogheda. That’s why drogheda has the Islamic crescent moon as their town symbol, to honour the generosity of the Turkish sultan, who literally saved thousands of lives.

Agree that they are powerful lines and I also love the starting line "For he stole Trevellyan's corn so the kids might see the morn", almost the point of the song? Love both lines, no argument on either one and they both make me emotional.

My dad came from County Clare. I only recently discovered this via submitting my DNA. I've since been to Ireland twice to visit many of my newfound cousins. I always loved this song, which has a lot more meaning for me now. 💚
This, for me, is the definitive version of the song. I've listened to six or eight other versions on RUclips, and nothing else quite matches up to the feeling and the emotion of Paddy Reilly here.
My Dad loved this song. He use to have this playing almost every day. He passed away in December. On the day of his Funeral, we had this song playing at the Graveyard. Every time I listen to this song, I think of my Dad. I miss him so much🕊❤️
I am welsh and moved to london many years ago and the kindest and most generous and loving friends i made there were Irish. We went to many an Irish ceili and and many parties and this song was always played. I am back in Wales now and miss those times🥲..this song brings back many happy memories of my Irish friends💗.....also some heartbreaking moments when thinking of the times that this song is recalling🥲...x
This is the best version I've heard. It's a masterpiece of a song and singer. It was a very sad time in Irish and English history which should not be forgotten. The fault was with the English ruling classes and not the English working classes who had very little themselves. I was born in Wales but I do have Irish blood lines.
I like this version a lot, too. The Dropkick Murphys actually introduced me to the song in the first place, so their version will always be special. There's also an amusing video of some Japanese guys singing it in a restaurant.
Thank you, beautiful song and lyrics, I'm born and bred from Liverpool, it's been difficult learning about the true history of Ireland and the suffering of its people, as I have close family and friends from Ireland,. Waking up to all the deceit and lies can be difficult to take at times but we must continue to learn about it, if only to prevent these horrible crimes from being repeated again.
You don't have to be from a particular religious background, country or ethnicity to appreciate this song. I spent much of my childhood travelling down from the North to watch Ireland play rugby and love hearing it being belt out by a terrific crowd.
Every true Irish man gets that feeling in your chest when you hear this. Our ancestors went through so much shit but the spirit never died.

such a sad story...but it's a lovely land, a lovely song and a lovely voice.... Greeting to Ireland from Germany!
I'm of irish descent and this is my favorite irish song.❤
My Dad fell in love to this after hearing it getting sung by the Irish at Anfield in the Euro 96 playoff against the Netherlands. Always played before he went out for his traditional pint on a Sunday night and explained the historical significance of it to me. Heard it on Channel 4s Help and I was filling up , 🇮🇪
Time flies and this song still being goals for me.
I wish someday I can live in Ireland.
I love this song. I'm going to play this when I visit my Mom and Dad's grave. She always wanted to go to Ireland.

My favourite song at Karaoke for me to sing. Powerful rendition being sung here. I'm carrying DNA of Irish family. Blessings!
My dad came from County Clare. I only recently discovered this via submitting my DNA. I've since been to Ireland twice to visit many of my newfound cousins. I always loved this song, which has a lot more meaning for me now. 💚
I'm from Cavan. I submitted my DNA to Ancestry DNA 4 months ago and have not heard from them
This, for me, is the definitive version of the song. I've listened to six or eight other versions on RUclips, and nothing else quite matches up to the feeling and the emotion of Paddy Reilly here.
Love from a Syrian!
My grandads favourite song. Played at his funeral today :( Love you forever & always grandpa ❤️
My Dad loved this song. He use to have this playing almost every day. He passed away in December. On the day of his Funeral, we had this song playing at the Graveyard. Every time I listen to this song, I think of my Dad. I miss him so much🕊❤️
as a Englishman with Irish heritage it hits home, even though it was written in 79, it feels true
Greetings from Serbia for proud people of Ireland.
This is my music teacher's favorite song, I can see why. Its such a touching and beautiful song.
I love this Irish classic, so beautiful !
This song always brings me to tears … so beautiful, yet so sad. The struggle is very real. … PEACE to ALL.
The english didnt give a shit

Me too such a powerful song 😢
Thank you, beautiful song and lyrics, I'm born and bred from Liverpool, it's been difficult learning about the true history of Ireland and the suffering of its people, as I have close family and friends from Ireland,. Waking up to all the deceit and lies can be difficult to take at times but we must continue to learn about it, if only to prevent these horrible crimes from being repeated again.
You don't have to be from a particular religious background, country or ethnicity to appreciate this song. I spent much of my childhood travelling down from the North to watch Ireland play rugby and love hearing it being belt out by a terrific crowd.
greetings from croatia.. god bless irish people and ireland. Tiocfaidh ár lá
