    Let me reiterate; IM NOT SAYING SEKIRO IS A BAD GAME OR SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SOULS GAME. It’s a fantastic game in its own right but I think some adjustments could have been easily made to make it even better.

      Could we get some more reasoning for the Unseen Aid thing? You kinda just said it should start low and have the ability to upgrade it. Why?
      Personally I think the 30% is almost perfect (should be 33% for the actual 1/3 chance), because it shouldn't be something you really on. Having it be a nice surprise seems exactly the point.
      Whereas having it much higher than that makes the revivals unbalanced, as you can just press die and have a fair chance of receiving Aid. Whereas otherwise you would revive to risk beating the fight, or try to flee. If you do die, having Unseen Aid proc is indeed a really nice surprise, but if it just happened regularly then the point of the system is nullified.
      May as well just bring back corpse runs, which I do honestly miss and think could really enhance the gameplay.

      100% agree.
      Here's hoping they use the black mortal blade lure / black scroll description for a DLC to descend into the underworld or something like that 😁

    • @Zinras
      @Zinras 5 лет назад +6

      I agree with a good bit of it but it doesn't come down to levelling up IMO, it's just that the skills are poorly balanced and that maybe it's a little too simplistic with only the one weapon. Because if you *do* mess around with the various skills and tools, they are incredibly powerful at the right time. The upgraded praying strikes gives you an incredibly fast and spammable attack against a lot of enemies, essentially stunlocking them, it's just that you can parry yourself out of most problems anyway. High Monk is my fave move but even that pales in front of the universal win-button that's Ichimonji Double since you can couple it with aerial combat arts and steamroll 90% of enemies and bosses because you can jump on them.
      And yes, most of the end-game skills are pretty trash too. I think Fromsoft missed a good opportunity to make some of the skills delete enemy HP instead, which could lead to a change in playstyle. Lack of lightning for both you and enemies is a bit of a shame and it could have been interesting to switch between all 4 different "elements" (mortal blade, Genichiro's blade, lightning blade and regular sword), even if you couldn't get new weapons.
      The tools are a fairly similar story. If used correctly they can turn any enemy into a joke, bosses included, but the absurd upgrade process with having to upgrade multiple tools to get to the one you want makes this difficult. On top of that the final upgrades are actually kinda bad for most of them, similar to the final combat arts, making it even sillier that you have to spend tons of resources to learn this.
      It's not true that Dark Souls has less re-used assets, though, it actually has the most in the entire series if you go beyond bosses. Yeah, the bosses aren't *that* bad compared to some later entries but you do fight 3x tutorial demon, 2x hydra and 3x Kirk (not technically a boss but come on), on top of Taurus, Gargoyles and Capra being normal enemies later.

    Need to point out a mistake regarding Kuro's charm: You already have it by default (without being able to see it in your inventory) in your first playthrough; you benefit from its effects, such as not taking chip damage while blocking, already. Having the charm is your basic state while playing the game. New game plus introduces the item formally and allows you to give it up, making the game harder.

    • @lennic

      I'd say dark souls 3 is the most polished game in the series, but I don't think its the best one, by far not... It may be subjective but re using assets means you could focus development time/cost on something else, it's a tradeoff

    • @Zinras
      @Zinras 5 лет назад +14

      Dark Souls has the least new assets of any game in the series, it's the one thing that really disappointed me about the game when I learned about DeS. Many of the basic enemies are ripped straight from DeS as well, moveset and all, they just got a new coat of paint (skellies and hollows are the most obvious). And yes, the 3 tutorial demons - which were *also* the tutorial demon in DeS - are a bit much.

    • @RatchetandSly
      @RatchetandSly 5 лет назад +43

      Dark Souls 1 reuses the Asylum Demon model 3 times, but only reuses the actual fight twice. The Stray Demon variant has a completely different moveset. The Demon Firesage, which has an identical moveset to the Asylum Demon, at least does fire damage now. These distinctions are important, because Sekiro doesn't really have them. It has the 3 land Headless and two underwater Headless. It features the Blazing Bull twice, the Schichimen Warrior 3 times, the Guardian Ape twice, Corrupted Monk two times, the Chained Ogre 3 times, General Samurai 3-4 times, Ashina Elite twice, the Lone Shadow Swordman/poison bros 3 times and probably others i've failed to mention.
      Dark Souls 1 in comparison to Sekiro, hardly reuses bossfights at all. Also, Sekiro does something similar but ultimately different to Dark Souls. In Dark Souls, bosses would later turn into regular enemies to show how far you've come. In Sekiro, regular enemies will occasionally stand in as bosses.

      @@RevMirrane They are called Mini-bosses, but they are effectively bosses. They have much larger healthbar-posture bars than the regular enemies, require multiple deathblows, drop valuable items, do not respawn, and will often trap you in their area. They may be called 'mini-bosses' because they have no story significance and don't necessarily forward the plot, but a lot of the mini-bosses are harder than some of the main bosses. Some of them, the only way to tell that they're bosses is the introductory cutscene, as well them dropping a memory. That's it.

Bonfires are Sculpture’s Idols, Estus flasks are healing gourds, Firelink is Dilapidated temple, enemies respawn when you rest, estus shards are gourd seeds, you lose xp when you die, going hollow is like dragon rot, NPC’s are similar in both games, there’s interconnectivity/shortcuts, games can be very challenging and cryptic, etc. Looking at all these, I honestly can’t blame people for thinking this is a souls-like game when it really isn’t. There are 2 reskins of the first boss (one below him, then the fire version). Also, the Capra demon and Taurus Demon just become normal enemies once you get past Quelagg's domain. From has always had this problem and DS1 is not exempt from it by a longshot. I agree with the lack of differing playstyles that you hinted/talked about. I wanted to switch to spear as a main wep, rejecting my traditional shinobi training, but nope. Also, why is this no real counter to grabs? It always annoys me when people complain about Sekiro not having multiplayer. It's a story based action adventure game, not an open rpg. I could understand if we created our own characters, but we don't. And can you imagine how difficult it would be to balance? You'd probably just have one shot builds running around with yashi-however-it's-spelt sugars, the firecracker, and the spiral spear. Or you'd just get your revives burnt up in a difficult area. Or someone just applying the burn status to you and going to town.

    • @alicaido6616
      @alicaido6616 5 лет назад +4

      @Jacob Jaywant think half of these are very opinionated, and again no reasoning for them, just a list. "Bad story," is verrryyy subjective, and Sekiro is the first of From's games to have an outright story in this fashion. What does, "lack of creative features," mean? Sekiro literally has the most innovative gameplay out of the series. I do personally think the npc questlines weren't as good this time around, though wouldn't call them bad, there's certainly plenty of great dialogue in them though. The recycled areas thing is kinda mute, as the castle, outskirts, estate are all reused but also redesigned. They've done that before in their games, (Bloodborne changed enemy designs greatly depending on certain things). The rest is very subjective. The music that we did get was largely good, but we could definitely have more.
      I think the complaints that a lot of people have are very lackluster, and not deeply thought out. In the end you have to remember that Sekiro, (as the other games), is a piece of art, not just a commercial product. The designers had a vision, and stuck to it. For this they should be praised. Constructive criticism is always welcome, but simple opinions are generally not even considered.

    Love the game, but my complaints are:
    - Camera can get you killed if you get pinned against a wall or if it automatically unlocks off of an enemy
    - Some skills and shinobi prosthetic upgrades are useless, e.g sen throw, butterfly kunai, divine abduction upgrades, lazulite
    - frame rates dip often
    - Input delay for blocking, so parrying must be timed slightly early rather than at the moment of the attack, which is sometimes hard to pull off, as doing it too early by even the slightest margin will result in blocking and getting posture destroyed, or too late and you will get hit and possibly die (combined with frame rate dips and ng+ and it becomes frustrating to deal with)

      -Camera issues are nothing new to fromsoft games, but they are really bad in some cases here. Those "Lone Shadow Longswordsman"-types in their tiny rooms are awful, because they often push you to the wall where the camera stops working. Worse than capra demon^^
      - Not useless but too specific. For some (spear, axe) there are less than 10 enemies in the game that actually have a weakness to those.
      - Framerate problems? Console user, huh?
      - This is not input delay. This little feature is called inertia. Movements don't happen instantaneously, but start by accelerateing a part of your body. So if you want to be on time for blocking you have to start your move BEFORE the hit arrives, not when you are already beeing hit.

      @@mathis8210 I get what you mean, but I have tested this many times. I press the left bumper and the character starts moving after a delay. Yeah I've not finished it yet and I consider myself an UUUBER hardcore Dark Souls and From fan in general but this game just lacks that "something" that all the Souls games and even Bloodborne has. I really feel like they went over the top on the difficulty by not giving you NEARLY the variation of play styles that Dark Souls did and this is coming from a guy that beat Dark Souls through NG7 and even beat it from start to finish as a Level 1. This game just doesn't even seem fair sometimes or it doesn't seem to know what kind of game it wants to be. It gives you the option of stealth but then will place enemies where stealth is almost impossible as an option but it's also equally impossible to go in there and get totally ganked. It just seems really unbalanced. I'm at the last boss but I can really say that I've found the game just far more frustrating as opposed to rewarding. Whereas in Dark Souls the frustration seems "worth it" in the end but in this game I really just feel like I want to just "beat it to say I beat it". Maybe it's just me.

    Most videos that criticise Sekiro have long dislike bars no matter the content so don't worry dude, still a good video. NG+ is indeed lame, no unlocks, and nothing really new to discover except unlocking endings and special techniques from those endings, but that's at the end. I think the XP thing is Activision's doing tbh.
    The grind in this game and no unlockables are sucking all the fun out of NG+ and the one combat art I was looking forward to got nerfed. Most of the combat arts just outright suck or are really ineffecient, it's actually better that you don't use them most of the time, as they even use spirit emblems, and you could have used a prosth and cut off a larger portion of the boss' HP and posture instead of a combat art. It was the only thing I was working toward, and now that it's gone, there's only the grind, and well...fuck that. At least in Dark SOuls I could try my hand at Magic or try out some weapons or whatever, mix and match and see what I can work, none of that in Sekiro. I'm 3/4 way through NG+ and I just have no desire to continue on, except maybe to kill Owl in the past because I missed that.

    I don't think infinitness of playing this game is not a very fair criticism.
    Though I do utterly agree that the prosthetic is extremely underutilised. It feels like the game wants to be too controlled in terms of what you can do, I do like the focus on one weapon combat, given how much more complex it is. But they limit the use of it immensely, allow you to change it constantly, and it just keeps you entirely uncommited to anything. I think they could have easily fixed the problems by making the Prosthetic more core to the moveset, you could only have a limited nuber of the ones you are likely to have found, have them be more or less unlimited use based and have more of them and hidden more and locked behind fight that sort of thing.
    Also, I disagree on the lore being gone, there is still a lot of lore story telling from items, in a weridly archaic way though, notes intead of equipment, nigh useless consumable items with descriptions hinting at things atc.

      Blood Machine Blood Machine Spot on description about prosthetics. I have over a thousand Spirit Emblems in my bank and I’d like to use them more but even with the talents that increase the amount you can hold, I always felt weary about using a prosthetic charge, especially when some of the useful ones cost a whopping 3 emblems.
      But I just wanted to say you described it best in terms of giving you so many options you can change on the fly, yet by severely hampering your freedom to use them when you’d like, you do feel entirely non-committal to any of them.
      I don’t know what the right fix would be, since everyone plays differently, and making them unlimited uses would obviously break most encounters. I guess we can only thank From for trying something new even if it didn’t quite pan out well overall.

      Floppy Dolphinn good point. I love the game but it had issues. This made me really consider just how flawed some of the elements were. Like prosthetics was a great idea but I only really used firecrackers, and shining arts were very underwhelming. The overall combat system and boss quality compensated for that but there were more issues than I realized. I can also see the replayability being worse than other dark souls games because there’s really only one way to play the game other than the multiple endings

    you are missing a critical point: this is a single player game, all the variety coming from going into ng+ here is not present since it was not builded for this purpose. Everything is designed for you to have an amazing immersive campaign, and they nailed it on so many aspects: the prosthetic tools are all useful and you can have access to them whenever the situation require to do so by just pausing the game, it is a very simplistic way to do it: "you see this enemy? choose which prosthetic you think it might works against him, knowing there is one or two that are more effective than the others" and you have concrete results. The rewards of the npc although they are shallow they are perfectly fitted in the story and the lore the game is trying to tell you, you don't expect from Hanbei, an immortal soldier survivor from the war against the Interior Ministers, to give you a valuable artifact or some sort or Dogen, a brillian apprentice of a genius doctor, relegate within a rotten dungeon to give you something special and yada...The combat arts works in the same way of the spells in DS once you become stronger you are not going to use the weak soul arrow right? but you are going for souls or crystal soul spear; same here, once you have mastered later arts you are not going to use whilwind or nightjar slash (although considering the wind-up of some arts you might want to use some basic arts since they are quicker). Soundtrack is, again, fitted so well in the context of the game, you have traditional instruments like the shamisen, koto and shakuhachi mixed togheter to build that sense of historical environment that game want you to feel, they are as vocal or choral as DS or BB for the simple fact that you are not fighting against blood thristy creatures ready to ripped you apart, you are "dancing" against shinobi or ninja or animals; the music is designed to bring rhytm to the fight, with fast tempo and slow and malinconic when is necessary (the Divine Dragon). The repetition of the mini-bosses is justified because they are part of a clan but still maintain a proper identity (lone hunter, Ashina Elite, Seven Spears....) the only one that I can't defend is the second Drunkard in Mibu Village, the fake Corrupted Monk (I get that she was guarding the palanquin that leads to the Fountainhead Palace but she has the same moveset as the real one, bad choice From) and the second Ape encounter (not the boss itself, but the transition of him between the lake and his den and the identical moveset; they could have added something like grappling points to spice things up or new animation like him climbing the wall or some sort). I was personally satisfied with this title, if you are not a fan of japanese historical settings you are not going to find anything memorable here, aside from the combat system of course. For people like myself and other that have studied this wonderful opera because wanted to figure it out what Miyazaki have tried to communicate us, we have found something special. Perhalps because of its niche cinese-japanese rooted narration, Sekiro is not meant for everyone but I'm glad nowadays where everything is either online, battle royal or filled with microtransactions, finding a pearl like this is truly remarkable. The game has flaws, many things could have been implemented or modified but because From always respects its deadlines the final product feels a little bit rushed at the end, but I would never have traided Sekiro with DS4 or BB2. Miyazaki gives his best on new IPs and not sequel (right DS3?) and although I would love to have a Sekiro sequel I'm looking forward to new Dlc or From's new title. There is few software houses like From that keeps innovating their games and we want to support them as much as possible because they deserve it.

    You can't have the memories give different attack increases, because people would then just ignore areas and go back with more attack power. The difficulty of a lot of the bosses is relative. I beat Owl my first try, and Owl (Father) on my third, but know friends who've spent days on it. Whereas for some gods forsaken reason the Corrupted Monk had me stumped for days. I refused to do the potential stealth death blows, and thus it took me three days to beat it. There's also player experience to take into account, as new players could struggle with bosses such as Gyoubu, where returning players starting new saves would stomp him (or other bosses). You can't balance an attack power reward on subjective difficulty. The way to balance it would be to do the normal attack increase, then have the boss also drop other valuables, or more experience (which they already do).

Was using the mist raven so if I did get hit I'd still get damage out. He's not all that difficult man. The hirata owl is insane tho. Numbers can never replace pure mechanics. The games that stand the test of time and become infinitely replayable (Ninja Gaiden Black, Vanquish, for ex.) are because of mechanical diversity, tight control scheme, UI layouts, dynamic combat and unparalleled gameplay depth. When it comes to gear, levels and build loadouts, there's always a limit.
    I'm glad FROM diverged from their previous "replayable because of different numbers" philosophy, but the real issue is that Miyazaki's team don't have any experience with making infinitely replayable games in the action genre, unlike, say, Team NINJA.
    Sekiro would have increased its replay value with build diversity, but only for a limited time. What Sekiro really needed was more gameplay depth, and a higher Player V. Enemy dynamic.

    • @yellowsaurus4895
      @yellowsaurus4895 5 лет назад +1

      Finally, someone else who gets it! Build diversity in Bloodborne and Souls is cosmetic, it's artificial, it doesn't _actually_ do anything to change the gameplay. Whether you're a greatsword user or a spell caster, you dodge, attack, repeat, without much variation. At first glance Sekiro's combat looks more samey but it's actually much more varied because of how much freedom the devs had to mess with the timings for attacking and deflecting for different enemies. Still wouldve been nice if there was more depth to the combat though, its fun but it feels like its missing something. If they had made it so your sword moveset changed based on what prosthetic you had equipped or something like that, it couldve been really cool.

      Few RPGs and action games stand that test of time, but they don't always have to be games that you can play over and over. A game that can be experienced and then remembered is also perfectly fine. Sekiro will be a game I'll recommend to people who would be into these kinds of games years down the line. Dark Souls is the same in that regard. These games are still remembered, even though the PVP eventually dies down and the game feels mostly the same even with different builds, self-imposed challenges and what not. In that sense they can stand the test of time the way a good book or movie would.

      @etiennelatour3435 5 лет назад

      @@Goudhaantje1993 While you bring up a good point, one I failed to mention, I have to say that it's not the same remembering a game in 20 years time and going back to play the game in 20 years and have it still hold up in its market.
      It is true that a game can be timeless in how memorable it is, or how it impacted the game industry; a game like Baldur's Gate being a good example.
      But, video games are not movies or books. They are inherently interactive, and it speaks volumes when you play a 20 year old game and say "yeah, it was better when I played it 20 years ago" as opposed to saying "Wow! This game is still great"
      When a game takes advantage of the qualities unique to its medium and pushes boundaries, the game will become memorable through an unrivaled gameplay experience, which can only be done by a video game.
      I thank you for bringing up memorability as a quality in gaming.

    Sekiro's world is great. But it's less developed overall (at least what's presented to the player), and more focused and grounded on a specific time and place. So that sense of everlasting mystery in Dark Souls isn't as present. There is mystery about things like the Dragon Rot, the centipedes, etc. But it's nowhere near as deep and broad as the Souls games which pull from a greater variety of sources. And the basic setting of Souls which is multiple worlds and time overlapping and merging. Sekiro is very specific in its time and place.
    The combat too is less broad than Souls' with the lack of gear/armor builds. But it's also deeper and more focused, and significantly more engaging. It feels far better to just play it. It's more fun combat by far. And the reality though is the weapon-based movesets of Souls is present. It's just in the prosthetic and skills. So visually there's a less overall variety. But the different kinds of approach to combat are there to some extent. You can do playthroughs of different prosethics and skills/styles if you like. No it's not necessary. But it's not necessary in Souls either. You can go through Souls with just a longsword too if you like. Just dodge-rolling, occasionally blocking/parrying and R1 spamming otherwise. You don't need to use heavy attacks or even the very fun addition of weapon arts from DS3 (which was perhaps an early move towards Sekiro combat). Playing through Sekiro is only simplistic if you don't focus on using the different tools and skills, the same way playing through Souls again is simplistic if you keep just R1ing a longsword for every playthrough.
    There's no magic. I don't feel that's a huge loss, but I never really played any casters in Souls. Casting from afar isn't as fun imo as melee combat, so it's absence from Sekiro is no knock against it for me. But I understand others do enjoy casting it and miss it, and that's a bummer for them. But, it's a game about a ninja swordsman with a robot arm. It's overall more focused and specific.
    Some of the mechanics like Dragon Rot feel underbaked. Or perhaps they pulled back from having it hugely influence the game because it was difficult to balance. Understandable when it's basically a mechanic that could kill off helpful NPCs for players. A compounding problem for struggling players. Imagine the crying from game media clowns about difficulty if some their Sekiro playthrough NPCs actually croaked. They already were whiny and entitled as it was. Actually, who cares about them. Forget them. Leave them to their entitled whines. Imagine just everyday players who may be struggling and then it gets compounded by NPCs dying off and they then struggle to find helpful items to buy (or even more necessary ones that are on some NPCs). Anyway, it's a cool idea for a mechanic that could definitely use more development. But I'm guessing it's real tough to find a good balance for it.
    Stealth as well is very dated. It's like playing a stealth game from 20 years ago in some instances. But tuning stealth for modern games is a lot of work for purely stealth focused games. Making NPCs behave in not completely stupid ways takes a lot of time and resources. Sekiro is primarily an action-combat RPGlite, boss battler (not a real term, I know). Tuning a well-developed stealth system where NPCs have memories and scour the levels for you would be resource-intensive. So yeah the stealth is almost laughably shallow a lot of the time. But those boss fights... wonderful! Best From boss fights yet maybe?
    Sekiro is not perfect by far. You pointed out many of it's less than perfections. But I think it's a great starting point for From to set out in a different direction from the Souls series. It's a branch of evolution for their games. The Souls branch can still exist. The Sekiro branch can too. They can add many of the things Sekiro lacks (if they see the need and place for it). But at its core Sekiro is a brilliant game already. And going back to Souls combat now may seem not as engaging any longer. They may have to improve Souls by incorporating some Sekiro into it at this point.
    I would love From to commit to providing variety and motivation to explore deeper into NGs in Sekiro, and all their games. It's something DS2 did pretty well. And Sekiro would be vastly stronger for it. Something where the full variety of prosthetic tools become a necessity to advance and survive. It would make playthroughs based around them more engaging.
    We've all binged on Sekiro at this point. Partly because it's new. Partly because it feels so damn good to play. It's understandable there's burnout. It's perhaps wise to step back. I've launched myself into Nioh (something I've never played before). It's good so far, but feels like a rougher, less smooth, vastly more RPGy, anime Sekiro. It's proving fun. But whatever works for you or anyone. Step away. Don't wring it until it's completely dry. Give it some space. It's a great game, and hopefully From expands upon it's greatness in the DLC (and sequels).

      You're right sekiro, is not bloodborne or dark souls and the creators have said that they do not want to really compare them.
      However, enough similarities remain to make comparisons between them, besides the obvious ones like same devs and 3rd person melee fighting game. The checkpoint system is the same, healing and upgrades to healing work the same, it essentially has bloodborne's QS bullet system albeit with some slight tweaks, I could go on but I'll choose to stop here. Despite the developers not WANTING people to compare this to souls, enough similarities remain to make these comparisons, especially when a large part of the people who watch this video are familiar with the souls series in some way because of the content on this channel.
      This is not dark souls or bloodborne, and while I think sekiro has the best fundamental combat system out of Fromsofts games, it does take several steps backwards in terms of what the creators former games offered players.

      @@mo0k12 I agree w you in the most part,but i really think that the steps backs they take were to improve other things like the combat and a more coesive story...Anyway i really hope we get an soulsborne true espiritual succesor soon but i was not hoping that Sekiro was going to be it...I think that Sekiro is more of an Tenchu Reboot w Souls elements than an Japan Souls...We are probally going to hear more about Fromsoftware at the E3 2019 who knows what are they going to show there...Maybe an dlc or an Souls game...

    Sekiro stinks for NG+. There's literally no motivation wrt to increasing vitality.
