    1. Game journalists need to respect developers and stop telling them how to do their job.

You have to remember that whether or not they should or should not respect someone they are game journalists who do not care about either of those options because they are mostly all a hive mind. @ESPorygon 5 лет назад +39

Journalists keep begging for games to get shorter, easier, more dumbed-down and streamlined, because they just care about getting to those end credits as quickly as possible. For a lot of them, playing through these games is just part of their job, and things like length, depth, and challenge only make their job harder. As such, I think there's always a pretty obvious ulterior motive behind these sorts of articles.

I honestly can't believe that argument with Cuphead is now seeping into gaming as a whole. People on twitter advocating for disabled people & people with deficient motor skills (what a noble cause!) so that they could enjoy FromSoft games' stories and settings without actually needing to learn any of the games' mechanics. I don't understand why they can't leave this one game studio alone. Just go play every single other title, let us have this one studio that does its own thing without hand-holding and screen markers telling you what to do constantly. It is so bizarre and backwards way of thinking, imagine applying this logic to everything in media and popular culture.

    • @ForeverLaxx

      @@1haunt
They target FromSoft because of its American marketing campaign. Their titles are touted as "so hard, you'll cry about it" so these people think that if they can get FromSoft to buckle under pressure then every studio is going to follow suit. It's one of the last relatively mainstream holdouts that aren't giving in to the instant gratification culture so they're viewed as an enemy.

I think despite my earlier comment this is my assessment. Fromsoft are 5 games into their style of tremendously punishing boss rush games. So infamous infact that game journos refer to any game as the "DS of X". Any game that is remotely hard to a journo is immediately compared to dark souls. So why is it surprising that a game made by FromSoft is difficult. If you know who FromSoft are and you should because you're a journo then you KNOW their games are not easy. Don't ask for easy mode. Git gud or do not play it.

Mika Budzisz But yet you complain that journalists get pissed off and incorrectly represent your favorite games. And no, that is not what Git Gud is and you know it. You say gamers like we are some elite clan of people, when that’s not what gaming is, and what gamers are. It’s a hobby that people take to varying levels of dedication. Gamers are simply people who play those games and use gaming as a primary hobby.
And for credibility’s sake, I am not a casual gamer. I sink plenty of time and effort into 100%ing the Souls Series and other games, but that doesn’t make me better than anyone, since anyone can do it with enough time, practice, and advice other than “Git Gud” from a community.

@@R_Seeburg I will say, I am sorry for the LONG reply, but please read through it and you don't even need to respond, but hopefully it will give you a different view point...
As far as I know, the Git Gud Meme started with Cuphead, when a game journalist couldn't get through the TUTORIAL LEVEL. If I am wrong, please let me know.
I never said that Gamers are an elite class of people. In fact, I believe that Gamers are super welcoming to everyone (me included) and the VERY few who ARE elitists, are not liked by anyone.
I agree with you that Gamers are people who simply want to play their games and that games are a hobby to most. However, we as Gamers should not be pushovers by journalists and people who don't understand us that want to degrade and paint us as something that we are not. And we should fight back.
For my credibility, even though I've played games since I was a child on the PS1, I would call myself a Casual Gamer. I've only been serious with getting Trophies for 3 games and I've own many in my library, PS1, PS2, Xbox, PS4 and PC (PS4 and PC in current time.)
I've never touched a From game because I've heard and seen how hard and challenging those games were and I simply enjoyed watching other Gamers suffer through them. I did not have the time nor the patience to deal with it.
The only ever game I tried that was close enough to a From Game was Nioh and I could not get passed the first Boss in the ship. I could not get into the mechanics of the game and I shelved it.
I saw Sekiro and watched others play through 45 minutes of the beginning. I love Japan and it's culture, which is a major reason why I gave Nioh a chance, including Sekiro even though Nioh burned me pretty bad.
And I have to say, I love Sekiro. I never believed that I would make it far, but I was willing to sink money for this game, because this Developer created previous games that people loved and I don't mind adding money to them even if I can't finish the game. However, I am close to beating the game and I've loved every second of that game. Even the most frustrating parts of it. In all truth, I had serious trouble with it at the beginning, but I got help from others who've beaten the game and watched a video explaining more about the mechanics. After those major helping tips, I am now challenging myself to go farther then I thought I could at the beginning when I bought this game.
I am picky with the games I buy and Sekiro was one that I will play on NG+ just to push myself further.
This journalist who wants an easy mode, is probably someone who did not take the game seriously or took the time to understand the mechanics of the game.
My experience of the game shows me that Sekiro is perfect as it is. It is challenging enough and makes me feel like a badass when I deflect and dodge like a true Shinobi.
If GAMERS want an easy mode, then it will be worthwhile (concerning Time and Money) for the Developers to put a pause on any future projects to configure an easier mode. But, if GAMERS are not asking for it, then these journalists need to shut their mouths and respect the Developers design of the game and respect US THE GAMERS because we will not take their lies and their entitled mindset lying down. And I do not believe Gamers are being elitist or entitled when we defend our loved games and Developers who do not deserve being talked down to by these types of "journalists".
If you've gotten to the end. Thank you for reading all that!!

In all honesty, I found Sekiro to be the easiest game in FromSoftware's lineup. I think the reason for this is because, well, there aren't many........ how to say.......... "supernatural" attacks that the enemies use against you. The closest things I can think of is the terror mechanic and the lightning attacks. Most of the game are sword encounters against one opponent. And with the mob battles, you can thin out the herd before you fight the mini boss/boss. And I think that because I'm really good at patterns, I know exactly what the attacks are going to be from the bosses/mini bosses since there are a limited amount of attacks. So I know how to deflect them. Don't get me wrong though, the game is hard, but Sekiro is the easiest for me, and this is coming from the guy who has platinumed all of FromSoftware games. But, this is my opinion.

Someone needs to say it, so I (someone who's sunk hundreds and HUNDREDS of hours into Dark Souls and Bloodborne, starting new files and pushing high NG+ cycles and loving every second of it) will: if From gave players an easy mode, it wouldn't affect your experience AT ALL.
How Dave plays his game has literally no effect on how you do. In fact, while you're sat there accusing that "pencil-neck" of trying to tell you how you should play your game, you don't even seem to realize that's *exactly* what you're doing to him and others like him.
You're telling him "No. You can't play with an easy mode. You shouldn't use summons on bosses, you shouldn't use crutches or grind or 'rob yourself' of that hard-earned wind. Git gud or git out."
If From's games had an easy mode, that'd be fine. Hell, it'd be great, even! More people would get to appreciate From's stellar world design and sound tracks and characters and lore... even if they have bad reflexes or aren't good at reading telegraphs.
If From's games had an easy mode, I'd be overjoyed. Because more people get to enjoy games that I love, and because I *don't need to play on easy mode.* I have that option. Something the gitgud crowd always seems to always overlook.
Dave playing on easy mode doesn't change MY game at all. In the slightest. Not the teeniest, tiniest bit.
But it DOES mean that I can have a great conversation with Dave about all the things we love in the game.
Here's the rub: options are good. People like options. Graphics options, sound options, and yes, even difficulty options. It's good for quite literally everyone involved. Better players get the satisfaction of playing on the harder difficulties, worse players get to enjoy the game in the first place, more people can buy the game so the developers get better rewarded for their hard work... the ONLY people who suffer for it are the people who demand that everyone *else* plays on THEIR preferred difficulty, in THEIR ideal way. It's ultimately just a selfish outlook.
And you know why I can say for certain that Dark Souls would be fine if it had an easy mode?
Because it ALREADY DOES, in the form of the White Sign Soapstone. You can summon a friend or NPC or two and the boss you're stuck on will be a cakewalk. Does that make the game bad? Of course it doesn't, you can just NOT summon people.
For all the talk about how From doesn't "want" various difficulties or ways to make the game easier, for all the talk from hotshot twink Invaders... no one ever seems to realise that Dark Souls already HAS all of that, and it's still one of the best game series in gaming history.
(And as one last point... the very existence of NPC summons for bosses - especially ones that have little to no story, like the Sword Master at Champion Gundyr - kind of shows that From very much DOES want players to have a button they can push to make certain encounters easier. If it were exclusively player-summons, you could argue it as a multiplayer thing, but the NPC summons are all but indisputable *proof* that the developers wanted to ensure that players would always have an option to call for help. Online, offline, even long after the servers are shut down.)

Also you are supposed to win when you fought Genichiro in the tutorial, if you do the cutscene will make more sense
And to be completely honest I don't think decreasing enemy dmg and increasing your dmg will help all that much, bruteforcing your way through could only carry you so far in this game, just learn how to parry, mikiri and jump and you basically beat the game

Game really isn't as hard as everyone is making it out to be, myself included. For the first 8 or so hours I was saying this is totally the hardest game From have made yet and I thought it was absolutely grueling. And it may very well be the most challening game of this style they've made so far, but honestly I feel like the combat is essentially still Souls combat at it's core. You literally just replace dodging with deflecting. Always be blocking. When an enemy swings at you, instead of rolling/quick stepping to avoid damage, you deflect. The hardest thing to get used to is dealing with the unblockable attacks. But that just takes a little practice. Once you're able to look at an enemies body and recognize what type of attack is coming, it really isn't this insurmountable scary thing anymore, and it really doesn't take that long to become accustomed to.
In short, stop your fucking whinging and git gud Dave.

But I still think that gatekeeping everything that's good about games behind a "get good" wall turns a lot of people away from games they could potentially enjoy, but simply don't have the time or patience to dedicate themselves to mastering a game. These games are good, but the difficulty is only part of why they're good. Adding an *option* will not invalidate or reduce the enjoyment of everyone else that prefers to play it the way developers intended.

The first few hours of Sekiro were absolutely brutal. Well first 4-5 bosses, because you're so blatantly underpowered. From the point you can actually DO stuff and can actually heal, etc., you can get by okay until mid-late game. There are a handful of difficult bosses (struggling on a secret endgame NG+ boss myself currently) but like 9/10 bosses can be cheesed. Half the bosses people complain about (Hi Guardian Ape) I found laughably easy.
There was a point I thought Dark Souls was sorta hard. Now playing the remaster, doing a legit 100% run and leveling to 125 from sl1 is like a 6-8 hour affair for me. Because I know every pixel of Lordran like the back of my hand by now. In hindsight it's not even that hard. I've also done PS3 DS2 deathless three times now. I grew up with the NES. I've beaten the first Castlevania in less than 15 minutes. I beat Ninja Gaiden 2 blind in 2 hours. Dark Souls is moderately difficult at best. If you want hard go play Touhou. (Also because I just can't let this go: lol, think Giantdad's OP? Play a ninja flipping katana chainmom pyromancer. This is the real Dark Souls easy mode. And like 80% of the build is doable on a 30 minutes old character.)
Normally I hate the "git gud" meme but I seriously feel it's warranted here.

Difficulty raises the bar, and makes you feel more accomplished.

As a complete casual I disagree with the "easy mode" idea. This "soulsborne" genre of games such as DS 1, 2, 3, bloodborne, Nioh and I've even played through the surge(yes, I played and enjoyed it). These games have set an entirely new standard of games for me personally. It's almost like a high that no other game genre can provide.

    Fallout 4/76
    anthem
    middle earth shadow of war
    star wars battlefront 2
everything EA has ever worked on
every game with those fucking pay to win models/microtransaction models
and youre upset that a game is too hard?

What I love the most about From Software games is that they couldn't possibly give two shits about what anybody thinks of them. If the player finds it too complicated, too difficult or too whatever, the game simply doesn't care.
This strong personality is much missed in the industry, nowadays basically composed of pleasers, making sure everybody is sitting comfortable in their seats, with seatbelts on and oh sir, would you like a glass of water too?
Thank you, From Software, to remind me why I bought a videogame in the first place. Want an interactive movie, buy a BluRay and play with it with your remote, because that's what games are going to be like in a couple of years. Might as well put a dedicated fast-forward button.

They should put in an “easy mode” that makes the game harder.

Sekiro is very fair in the challenges they give you. I'm getting close to mid-game (i think) and while it's difficult I've never felt like this is impossible, but rather I just need to study the patterns and practice the fight. If anything Sekiro is one of their more accessible games. I mean you get fast travel from the start. You get a couple of gourd seeds and prosthetic upgrades early on. There's always an idol (bonfire) right around the corner. And there's lots of hints of how to deal with bosses or situations. I think this is the most accessible, fair games they've made so far. And I'm loving playing it.

I would like to add that the Git Gud attitude from the FromSoft community is exactly what feeds into “Journalists” like Thier’s narrative. Quite frankly, it’s an elitist mindset and the people who subscribe to that mindset are some of the most disrespectful and rude people I’ve ever encountered. It just cements ideas that the game isn’t built for casual players to progress in over time and provides evidence toward that claim in the form of “See these people? This is who they built the game for! They don’t respect the casual player!” If the FromSoft Community could tone down the “Well you just suck get better” attitude and adopt more of a “Hey man you can do it here is some advice” attitude, I believe we would see a lot less of journalists like Thier saying these games are “too hard” as a result of a more humble and polite community.

the thing he doesn't get is that you're not supposed to beat these games the first time in a weekend. or maybe even in a week. if you "don't have time" to learn the game, so what? i have a full time job too, so do the vast majority of people who play these games. so maybe you only have 2 hours to play a week. that literally only means that it takes you more weeks to complete the game than someone who has more free time. ask yourself why you expect to be able to finish a game in a week. why would you WANT to receive less content? it's ENTERTAINMENT, the longer it takes you, the longer it lasts. like mitch said the games only come out once every few years. i'd be so fucking disappointed if i only got a few hours of gameplay out of my first playthrough. it should be fucking hard. it should be fucking confusing. i don't want to know where to go, i want to wander around exploring everything until i find the next objective, and then die 10 times trying to complete it so that i can really enjoy the success on my 11th attempt. especially for a game with no pvp, there's frankly not much replayability so you better get it right the first time. if you do shit to lower the difficulty of your first playthrough you're actively diminishing your own experience, and basically erasing the possibility of this experience that you can only ever get once. you only get one first playthrough. once you've played the game once, it will never be the same again. so experiencing it on an "easy mode" irreversibly takes the game's intended experience away from you. even if you play on "hard mode" your second playthrough, it's already too late, because you know what's around every corner, you know where you need to go, you know all the pitfalls and tricks. you're not supposed to get the drake sword on your first playthrough, and if you do (i did) you're probably going to regret it eventually. what i wouldn't give for a fucking memory erasure device so i could re-experience the dark souls series from a complete outsider's perspective. you think you want an easy mode, but you don't. and game developers shouldn't be afraid to make decisions for the gamer. in some genres sure you need to pander to your customers. not in this one. you need to produce the game that you think is worth making. there's nothing wrong with excluding some liberties from the game. if gamers don't like it, they won't buy it. we don't need journalists to give commands to developers. if we don't like the game we simply won't pay for it and they'll get the idea. but the reality is people ARE buying these games and have been for a long time. it's not a simple matter of increasing freedom either. it's not like adding an easy mode would be harmless to the people who already enjoy the game. you might be tempted to think that an easy mode would be good for adding new demographics to the game's potential market, and its existing fanbase could simply choose not to enable the easy mode. but you'd be wrong. many of this game's biggest fans are precisely the kind of people who would have turned on "easy mode" if it was available. like i said, i looked up a guide and obtained the drake sword on MY first playthrough. i didn't make that mistake again in dark souls 2 or dark souls 3 or bloodborne. i'm definitely a member of that "mega-fan" demographic, these games really mean a lot to me and i'm pretty much a guaranteed customer for life for this company. in spite of everything everyone says i will defend dark souls 2 to my last breath and i STILL enjoy playing that game from time to time. but the whole reason i love this series so much is because it was such a struggle. the feeling of growth and the development of my skills is so satisfying. some of the bosses are just so perfectly designed to give you that feeling.
darkeater midir is really my favorite in that aspect. it takes elements from kalameet from dark souls 1, and sinh the slumbering dragon and the ancient dragon from dark souls 2. but it perfects them all, so that the fight is simultaneously faster paced and more lethal, yet just as possible to perfect, if not more possible to perfect. what i mean is, all of the fight's mechanics are avoidable once you learn them and practice evading them. all of his attacks are extremely dangerous and require precise timing and reading of the telegraphs. but there is a way to go through that fight without taking any damage and beat him in 10 minutes or less. it's entirely possible. there's nothing in there that's totally out of your control. he has a very similar attack to ancient dragon where he shoots fire at the ground and you have to start running to the right side of his tail within a certain time frame or it hits you. ancient dragon's came off a little more bullshitty because the hitbox didn't line up with the visual feedback of the fire very well, and unless you came back later on after leveling a bit, it killed you every time unless it caught you right at the end of the fire breath. midir's analogous attack does less damage for less time, but it's still a harder boss, because that was ancient dragon's ONLY trick. all of his other attacks were basically impossible to get hit by unless your input device disconnected or you were intentionally trying to get crushed by his paws. it felt like bullshit because they fucked up all his other attacks, but they seemed to have accidentally made his fire breath attack really hard to avoid, so in order to make the boss actually difficult they just massively inflated the amount of damage his fire breath did. that way the average kill/death ratio would be much lower. but isn't really a recipe for the most satisfying experience. midir got it down perfectly. a really good challenge, an absolute marathon where most players will burn through all 15 of their estus charges before getting the boss to 20% health, but made up of a series of mechanics that could be perfectly avoided so as to take zero damage the entire fight. this allows you to do better and better, every run, until you finally win. the feeling of anxiety and stimulation you have during the final moments of the fight is followed by an almost physical burst of exhilaration and euphoria when that last chunk of HP is cut down and the boss explodes into a bright cloud of souls. that is like a drug and it's what we're chasing when we play these games. you take that away and you pretty much take the point of the game away. yeah, the first playthrough can take a LOT of time for a first-time player. it can make you want to throw your controller. but if you only have 2 hours a week to play the game, that's fucking fine, it's worth spending 6 months to beat the game. don't throw your controller, keep playing, i guarantee after the first couple bosses you will be addicted and you will understand exactly why you don't WANT an easy mode, if anything you'll be asking for a fucking hard mode

Ive had so much damn fun struggling against the bosses, learning moved and patterns, looking up guides. Ive fallen for a game that i thought i was going to despise. I know that its my own fault if i fail and i love the feeling of beating a boss/miniboss that took me hours to learn. Huge respect to the game developers. To fromsoft. To miyazaki and to the entire sekirosoulsbourne community. Love you all.

One Point that i could make in favour of an easier mode, would be support for handicapped players. Sometimes it is easy to forget that they exist.

It's easy to sum up why this journalist is wrong. The challenge those games include is - along with the unique storytelling and worlds - their usp. The challenge is what made these games famous, the challenge is what keeps them famous, the challenge is what seperates them from the rest of the market and keeps them interesting. Adding an easy mode would take away so much from these games. It wont change the beautiful worlds and stories, but it would kill the "shadow" of the "hardest games of all time" even people, who never played these games themselves, know about.

sekiro has simple mechanics that require you to master. I struggle through it and finally learn the timing and patterns of the bosses and get a feeling of satisfaction. especially knowing it's as the devs intended.
the base game itself is easy mode. the speed and no hit runners have proven that.
