Highlights from the Men's Marathon during the London 2012 Olympic Games on 12 August 2012.
Since 1896, athletics has been on the programme of each edition of the Games of the Olympiad. Its presence on the Games programme has allowed its popularity to increase across the world. This popularity was also strengthened by the creation of the IAAF in 1912. Women's events appeared for the first time at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, while the men's programme was standardised as of the 1932 Games in Los Angeles. Although at the beginning women were authorised to participate in only some events, today their programme is almost identical to that of the men.

Stephen Kiprotich...totally adorable!!! Uganda deserves a champion like this. To be so vibrant and positive after running 26 miles in the heat is an Olympic accomplishment in itself. This is truly inspiring.
I still cry when I see this. What a moment to be alive for!!
He's so proud of he's country! What an example!!
Kiprotich, you are a star, you have made us proud! UGANDA!!

Best day of his life
Thank you steven kiprotich ...........we love you
Proud to be Ugandan
I never thought that the average speed they run is around 20km/h
man now I respect them much much more because sustaining this speed is something amazing. For example me, I can only run at 20km/h on a treadmill for around 5 minutes and these guys run for 2 hours
Lol. "now i can die a champion, i can't die a useless man"
that's his truth
African runners (most) are so humble
Muveeko ebyo byamwe ba Africans but abazungu tebabiliiko
I'm dead @ dying a useless man. I like his observation. he is a runner and so come may he must win a gold or else..
Totally saluted.
Keep it up our kipro we love dont give up

Well done Stephen Kiprotich, you made us proud! Well done sir, UGANDA!!
respect to these champions
Wow u made us really proud.thanks uganda remains the pearl
kiprotich is a ugandan. if u have a prob with it, go to kapchorwa u will find he's former school were he studied wen he had given up on athletics. u ganda can actually run 100 metres, steeple chase an long distance. wait until we bring you karamojongs and acholis who will break your world records. songs kiprotic and all the other guys wh share names with kenyans since u share the border at bukwo district.
I have difficulty maintaining the speed they run for any length of time, let alone the full marathon... its amazing
It seems strange, but its actually a pretty fair argument. I remember when watching the event, the commentators talked about how Kenyans arent really that happy about training in the heat, so they would always train in the morning and evening to avoid the heat, plus most of them are in altitude, so its not as hot. Although, im still not sure about the accuracy of that statement, but heat was the reason for both the bad marathon for makau in london, and mutai in boston that year.
This is the beginning, you wait and see. Uganda has very high potential.
Irene Salness we waited and that was the end....now 4 years down the line no even bronze medal...what went wrong
Joshua cheptegei
So inspiring.
Proud
wilson kiprotich went on to break the world record in berlin

Kiprotich kenyan blood .
Abel Kirui is very handsome!
God bless u
HE KNOWS DA WAE!
it was really shame for Ethiopia that all lions beaten
wen will u make it again .
20km/h for 5 minutes it's better than a sub-5 minute mile. Not many amateurs can do that all.
Is this something non-achievable to run for 5 minutes at this speed?
As you said, running for 20km/hr for 2 hours is amazing and this is what requires some serious athletic background. So running for 5 minutes is a triffle and can be achieved by most amateurs. Unless anaerobic endurance is never worked out.
golory to motherland,Uganda!
Isn't Kiprotich a kenyan name....unless his mother is Ugandan.....I've never heard of a Kiprotich ugandan
Stephanie Kirathe There's no much difference between the tribes living in Eastern Uganda and Western Kenya. I think u know that.
Stephanie, there's some Kalenjins on the Uganda side...slight variation on how they talk but still Kalenjin tribe.
Stephanie Kirathe ok take him to Kenya then . he wins for your country too
and sure they will win mate, watch my space.
Stephen Kiprotich is kenyan?
There are Kalenjin people on the Uganda side. So even though he is Kalenjin like the Kenyan runners, he is Ugandan by Geography.
@@fitstar7541 okay sorry I thought he is kenyen thanks for clarification!
@@dr.mohamedaitnouh4501 You are welcome Doc.
Just wait for Rupp if he so decides to run the marathon. He has only done one half marathon and ran a 60:30!!! America!!!
20km/hr for 5 minutes isn't very hard, you don't need a serious athletic background. I run 12 km/hr on average on my longer runs (around 10 k runs), and I'm not in my best shape at the moment. These runners though are natural runners, and few people on the planet can run like that!
thanks but that's the maximum. Still, tell me, how is it possible to sustain this speed for freaking 2 hours?
We run on hills in kabale you joke
Wandfull Uganda
And how did you Land in Uganda kiprotich come from Kalenjin Language
Sasa Naomi. There are Kalenjin people on the Uganda side, the Sebei. Same names like Kenyan Kalenjin people, they speak Kalenjin but a little bit different way.
0:01
Who's here after he beat 2 hr mark???
This is a different person :)
Yeah, but you said 20km/h for five minutes, that's very easy, almost every person I run with manages that, and my 12km/h is on longer runs (10k or more). And I'm not in good shape nowadays, at school I would run above 20km/h on the 3k competitions, which is around a 10 minute run.
all wz u again kipolotiki
UGANDA!!!!
Then you should watch the Triathletes.
how far it is ?
26.2 miles
You in the physical ed running a mile.
Wait Kenyans complaining about heat? hmmm...
epic
coming soon malaysia
This is very tired contest. Everyone were best.
5000 meters
well then it seems that i'm that amateur minority list who can run it
That is a Kenyan Uganda has stolen.
From a Kalenjin, I can tell you he is Ugandan....we have Kalenjins in Uganda....the Sabiny....they speak Kalenjin but with a different accent though. Just fyi bro.
Shoes don't make the athlete mate.
@ least Kiprotch but cranes ....haaa!
lupet
No one cares.
Also, 20 km/hr for 3k is 9 minutes exactly, big difference.
Nobody cares!
