Grenada's Kirani James wins the gold medal in the men's 400m in the Olympic Stadium at the London 2012 Olympic Games (6 August).
James ran a time of 43.94 followed by Luguelin Santos (DOM) who took silver and Lalonde Gordon (TRI) who took bronze.
Since 1896, athletics has been on the programme of each edition of the Games of the Olympiad. Its presence on the Games programme has allowed its popularity to increase across the world. This popularity was also strengthened by the creation of the IAAF in 1912. Women's events appeared for the first time at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, while the men's programme was standardised as of the 1932 Games in Los Angeles. Although at the beginning women were authorised to participate in only some events, today their programme is almost identical to that of the men.

Gravity I always felt a bit of camaraderie in track, especially after a race like the 400m. It's so draining, you can't help but look at the guy next to you after the finish and think "man, that was hell."

Its a bit unfair to attack him for that, he just forgot one person. It really isn't the end of the world and doesn't change the fact that he is a class athlete in both running ability and his attitude towards the sport and his competitors

Depends on what level you are at and what the talent is like around you. I currently run track in college. Back in 10th grade I was running high 52 sec. splits in 4x4 relays, which is definitely above average IMO. 55 to 56 secs would definitely be respectable for open 400. Pacing it depends on your level of conditioning. Some can sprint a full 400 but others aren't that conditioned. I have followed this format: Sprint first 100, stride out the next 150 and then kick the last 150.

Mike Willan there was a kid in my division in high school from a different that ran a 49 his freshmen year but never improved that time. Do you know how hard it is to improve a time that fast. A senior this year in the state meet ran a 50 and his freshmen year and improved it to a 49 in the state race. Not dissing the kid but that great but it is hard to improve a time that fast

something to think about...Johnson was never 19 yrs when he ran 43 secs...another thing you guys don't know is, Kirani is an excellent 200m runner...he's just not ready to unleash his talent yet. I remember hearing Johnson say Bolt cannot break his 200m record....where is it now??

Idk if you saw this comment too. It wasn't directly sent to you: "Heres the race. Not too impressive times from both the athletes, however Merritt ran two weeks later in Oslo jogging to the finish line in a 44.12 the worlds leading time by a huge margin. Think about it if Merritt ran 44.12 in June and was peeked for the Olympics he would have beaten his personal best of 43.75"

@EJ..I still stand by my comment. Kirani has mileage and age on his side. Only a matter of improving his technique and being more aggressive till he become's the record holder.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this but K James became the first non-USA athlete to break 44 seconds!
