The 110mH final gotta be the most intense event in track and field, imagine 10 hurdles in front of u with a slight misstep between them would cause u from first to last, the pressure at the starting line really off the chart
Still remember watching this final in Hyde Park. The place exploded when Clarke got announced. Absolutely devastated he missed out on a medal but I'm never going to forget that day as long as I live.
the height isnt really the hardest part either..its getting 3 steps between the barriers..thats the hard part. you need to be really fast to do that. being tall helps. and most of these guys have to chop their strides.. at lower levels the athletes are stretching to get 3 strides between the hurdles.
LOL. Don't feel bad. It's one of the most difficult track events. Hurdles are pretty high 42 inch (1.07m) so it does help to be tall. At least 6ft . Also it takes a lot of training and hurdle drills. Flexibility, agility, power and speed. You don't become a hurdler over night. Most of them start very young and of course you have to have the talent and athleticism.I did the high Hurdles as a Decathlete and most decathletes dread the hurdles.
One of the most understated legends of all time. Incredible what he achieved -- and the record that still stands in 2024 -- despite what would setbacks for nearly anyone else. Deserves all the accolades.
I find it funny how Robles magically pulls a hammy when Merritt starts to pass him...Looks like someone has been watching that Michael Johnson vs Donovan Bailey video lol
Don't try to make any assumptions on what you THINK I implied. Don't insult me because I did no harm to you, This is an public website where people can post how they feel. And personally I felt that it was funny how as soon as Merritt was passing him how he all of a sudden pulled up with an injury. Track & Field athletes do it all of the time. And this is the same guy who sabotaged Xiang in a Championship final because Xiang was beating him. And there is video proof and professional analyst who proved that it was true. I'm not saying im some genius know it all but dont attack me because I posted my personal opinion, that's mean.
@@madeofmelancholy Hahahaha wow. Sadly I never ran hurdles again after that comment but I am now a sprinter/jumper for my college team so at least I stuck with the sport lol
FYI people lean at the finish because the time is when your SHOULDERS cross the line. When they show the picture where the runners look all goofy and warped the red lines are used to determine who's shoulders crossed first
For your kind information, For the 110m hurdles, first hurdle is placed after a run-up of 13.72m from the starting line of 110m Race. With reference to 100m dash, start of 110m hurdles race is 10m back of 100m race. Conclusion: First Hurdle doesn't coincide with 100m dash starting line, instead it's 3.72m forward to the 100m dash start line.
MrFilip56, I do believe it's anything below the neck which would include both the head and the chest, but if you look at the pictures and a runner is leaning, it is marked at the shoulders. However, I'm no official so I'm sure you could find it in a USATF or IAAF rule book if you really wanted an official answer. Hope this helped.
beyoncestan101 Doesnt matter im just being realistic recently (being the past 8-12 yrs) the event was dominated by guys like Dyran Robles and Lui Xang just recently the US runners have emerged to dominate
Orlando Ortega from Cuba crashed against a hurdle and was visibly in a degree of pain. Yet, I saw neither a medical team nor another competitor offer him a bit of help or the smallest measure of human compassion. That is what I call a brutal inhumane act...a most BRUTAL act of DISGRACE. I hope that that human foible did NOT discourage him from following his dream and the need to polish his craft. I wish the young Ortega the very best.
Lawrence Clarke. A brilliant performance. 4th place at his first olympics when he qualified as a fastest loser beating a bunch of high quality athletes in a time of 13.39 but Aries Merritt almost unbeatable in the hurdles.
Actually the clock you see is only the tv timers, and the electronic timers (the one they use to detect with exact percision) detect any part of the body when they pass by whether it be your head or your chest, thats why when its gonna be a close one they lean their head for the finish line. Your welcome :)
I just as (if not more) impressed that he held onto his leg number sticker even though he'd won, rather than just littering it onto the floor like the other athletes.
Richardson's semi-final is much better than his final... He kept jogging after passing the last hurdle in semi-final and with 13.13... If he had kept pushing after that, he would have broken the OR....
How does one go about 3-stepping hurdles? I'm a sophomore in track, and I'm 5' 6''. I'm not looking to become an elite athlete, but I do want to be able to switch from 4 to 3 because my weak leg is putting me off balance.
since his medical operation, Merrit still looking for his best perform, i don't think he will depend the tittle at Rio, Mc Leod from Jamaica is a favourite, He clocked 12,98 sub Worl leading time this year in doha!
Just reading the comments and seeing how people are saying they are too short. Work on extending your stride. I'm no expert but I finally got a point where I could 3 step and I'm currently right around 5'9. Junior year right now my best time is 15.21
Hansle Parchment remember the name, the guy was in last place and came 3rd now at Tokyo he's an Olympic champion with a awesome story behind it.
I love him.

merritt seems nice and down to earth...
Merritt is the ULTIMATE BOSS!! 👏👏👌👌
Yes indeed as is usual for said sur name!!!
Love Merritt’s smile
1:51 Merritt got a beautiful smile
imagine how nervous these guys are before the race.
smelly bum I always think about this when watching
Merritt was in such great shape in 2012.
Watching Merrit run is so classic. 2012-2013 was truly the best year for america.
Merritt a man without arrogance.
My best time for 110m hurdles is DNF :)
My best time for the 300m hurdles was 42.6. Not bad but not good.
Hahahahaha DNF 😂😂 I see what you did there
+TheDarThaum You must have good stamina!
+Tyson Sprinter no
john Rowland my bes is DNS

How the HELL do they do this? I would literally fall at the first hurdle.
Same

I was rooting for Richardson!!! I love his technique. really fun to watch! Congrats to Merritt thought. He ran for his life!

Welldone Hansel Parchment to run from the back to win bronze medal. Proud of you
And now it's the Olympic Champion
@@thekingofgindio that's God's timing.
Big up Parchment, u won the gold lastnight 🥰🥰🥰
Looked like a clean race for Merritt! Super race.
Robles was behind even before the pulled hamstring. I think he knew it too. :-)
Wow.....phenomenal technique!
I find it funny how Robles magically pulls a hammy when Merritt starts to pass him...Looks like someone has been watching that Michael Johnson vs Donovan Bailey video lol
Really? So you think he gave up a medal at the olympics cause he wasn't going to get first? Come on now, use your head.
I love how I NEVER said ANY of that.....but great that you can think on your own :)
Haha thank you Cliff
No problem, but kenneth might try to make a comeback so stay tuned ;)

Aries Merritt motivates me do run 110 hurdles. My best time is 17.33 seconds. I am only in middle school.
Yup you have lots if time to grow and learn. I started hurdles last year my freshman year, but im getting better and good
Thanks
that's slow stop
You doing good now?? 6 years after this comment

I do feel proud watch j Richardson I was his hurdle coach all thru club track from a novice to world youth champ,Track Dallas,Coach Mann
goshh they make it look so easy! try even stepping over those things. I run track and i admire these guys
Race starts at 3:14 if that’s what you came for
This is my motivation, my best is 14.76 and I'm a junior.
Christian are there any Division 1 schools showing interest in you????

I can honestly say I coach one of the best hurdlers in the world as I predicted when Jason was in the 10th grade coach mann/trackdallas
felicidades merrit
My best 110m hurdles were 16.53 but I broke my back and now I can't do them anymore, that was freshman year
I'm a freshman now my best time right now is 16.48 sorry to hear bout your back
+Jalun Taylor Yo mines 16.48 too, also a freshman
+DaYogiBear headed to sophomore year but mine was a 16.41 and I placed 8th in the district. First place was a monster with a 15.78.
how old are you guys i am 16 and i do 15:16 at 110m
Alex THC I'm 17 now and do 13.02
America is glad to have black people win the Olympics for us
where would you guys be without us :)
+DaYogiBear lol. I know. The only event white people win is swimming for the US. Everything else is mostly black dominated
+Xentanon USA!
This is An alias not true. Whites dominate sprinting too
Sure they do buddy
We got it guys in the comment section saying their probably fake time online, you guys are studs
6.26 the girl on the right: What a beauty !!!

Ugh no this was the 20th USA gold medal at the olympics in this event sir

Merritt looks very upright in the blocks compared to the other athletes on the field, did anyone else notice that?
Lawrence Clarke. A brilliant performance. 4th place at his first olympics when he qualified as a fastest loser beating a bunch of high quality athletes in a time of 13.39 but Aries Merritt almost unbeatable in the hurdles.
does anybody know any good videos of how to shuffle inbetween the hurdles?
Jumped ahead to the a little before the 3:00 minute mark and I thought my sound stopped working

Thanks
USA,USA,JAM. I expect more from Jamaica, next time, great run USA, love the competition.
Oral Gordon
TWENTIETH gold for the U.S. in this....think you would know better....
whats insane is that they have an extra 10m and theyre still running what would be a "fast" 100m
Liu Xiang :(
Love it big time hurdling thank you Jason Richardson from coach mann,TrackDallas
He didn't pull a hamstring he knew he lost and tried to play it off like he was hurt
3:15, you're welcome
those clocks arent always right, so they have official timers that get transferred to the screen right after the race :)

that crowd wave was good
Why Merritt and Richardson did not run in 2016 Rio Olympics?
I liked the part with long jump
I can 3 step as a freshman but only the bunny hop kind. Even though it's fast, I want to learn how to sprint the 3 step. Any tips?

is aries merrit related to lashawn ?
mind over matter is magic Yes, they are cousins

I don't get it, they start where the 100m starts and finish where all races finish!!
PLEASE HELP ME OUT!
When does he break the record ?
Parchment just won Tokyo
I'm curious who the fastest 100m runner was to ever become a 110mh specialist
mcleod, 9.99
Why is it 110m?
USA!!!
Jason Richardson nice race nice race congrats on this 2012 race better and better u get
Merritt Dominates
Y'all watching the guys upfront but just look at Ortega and the other guy in 7 and 8 that's what I call battle they had they're own thing going on
Im learning how to do this
However if you're in the US the highs are 39" (4th notch up) for high school whereas these are 42" (5th notch)
@nathanmark it's when your chest crossed the line not your shoulder lol
very good i love it
Who was the favorite (or favorites) going into this race?
Tbh merrit and Richardson hbu
The clock stops when your waist crosses the finish line, not chest.
Yeah, that's good!
go parchment u make us proud
3:29 pause at
12.8? WHAT? WHAT?
Its the 110m hurdles not the 100m hurdles...they start further back.....
0:48 that slovak flag in the lower left corner XD
