I went to this anime con with a couple of friends a few years ago and one of the friends got separated from the rest of us. so we went up to the second floor, which basically was a balcony that looked out across the main floor of the convention center, to see if we could find her...and then we saw him, waldo, standing in a group of other cosplayers. I still wish I'd gotten a picture.
Wally is definitely a British national treasure. Not sure if he surpasses David Attenborough or Gordon Ramsey but he's up there. So proud of this contribution to society 👏

But yeah, turns out he was called Waldo in the US.
I counted quite a few people in the world record breaking attempts who didn't have glasses. In fact the Japanese crowd had quite a few people without glasses on. They should have been disqualified.

I remember around 93 a friend of mine at the time found the Where's Wally books and basically went nuts with them, he got them out and repeatedly renewed/got them out again them over and over from the local library. Then when he found someone had reserved them so he couldn't renew them he put in a reserve himself after having a sort of hissing fit about it, makes it worst he could easily have gone out and brought them properly from WHSmiths
Loved the books as a kid. But the one that challenged me more than anything (not sure exactly which Waldo book it's from) the two pager is a dog style spa, I think, and you have to find the REAL Woof among hundreds of Woof look-alikes. The only difference, Woof has 5 stripes on his tail. OMG that particular puzzle took me quite a bit longer than usual. Altogether with finding the extras like the scroll, key, side characters, etc I must have been on that puzzle for at least 3 hours. Still loved the challenge, though. XD

Non-white students (and Asians are now counted as white for some reason) were doing worse, so instead of trying to improve things they just lowered the standards so more kids would be able to graduate.

as a kid, my room was Waldo themed. white and red everything, waldo covers and sheets, books galore. My folks found a red and white desk and dresser too.
There was also a reference to the "Where's Wally" books in The Sims 3, where your sim kids can read a children's book called, "Where's Bella?"; a reference to Bella Goth (the sim that mysteriously disappeared in Sims 2). Quite strange really, as Bella is actually in Sims 3 as a child (Sims 3 being a prequel game).
I loved Where's Wally (🇬🇧) as a child. I had no idea about the Where's Wally painted on a Vancouver roof so I'm now off to look at Google maps to try and find him. I may be a while 😂

I still don't understand the reason for changing his name to Waldo here in America. "We don't want him to seem stupid." OK, but "Wally" doesn't even mean that here. So why change it. I remember Waldo also appeared on the little milk cartons kids got for lunch in our school cafeteria. They also used to put pictures of missing children on regular sized milk cartons in the grocery store. I didn't put the two together until just now.
