I just watched this movie tonight (with my kids) again for the first time in years. I thought that they hadn't seen it, but my daughter was like, "Wait, is this the movie where the lady gets her head switched with a dog?" I nodded, and she was like, "I hate this movie. It terrified me as a kid." I was so shocked, cuz I'm sure that I wouldn't have shown her this when she was little. That scene was all she could remember, so I think she must have walked in on me watching or something. Anyhoo, she was able to laugh at the movie today, but still maintains that she's gonna have nightmares about it.
I'd always thought that Mars Attacks was a funny response to Independence Day - but I stand corrected. Funny movie, though - and nice to see Jack Nicholson do that type of comedy.
This was by far one of the best videos you have shared ! Slim Whitman & his family were long time friends of mine . From what I understood at the time ; Burtons production company called them and asked them for permission to use his music in the film . Slim thought it was a wonderful idea , he loved it Shortly before the film came out he was telling us about it all during his concert in my home town in 1995 , we were all very excited waiting for it to premiere at the theaters . Both Slim & his wife Jerry have both since passed on but, his music lives on through his son Byron Whitman .
Minty you forgot a very cool important fact! The buildings in Las Vegas that were being blowned up were actualy demolished. The old buildings were already old and schedule to be demolition so they actually blew them up for the movie. So when you're actually watching the movies and these buildings go down they were actually being demolished. I know this because I actually went to Las Vegas after the movie was released. They talked about it.
Definitely. The effects were awesome in "ID4," but man... "Mars Attacks!" was and still is my favorite of the two films. It really is a guilty pleasure. =)
The Unknown Psycho ... I have to agree with you there. Independence Day was super as the serious blockbuster, but Mars Attacks is much more entertaining, especially for the zany humor in the midst of horrific mayhem.
Same. I remember seeing "Mars Attacks!" with my dad in theaters when I was 9 and I was both entertained and disturbed by it. I saw "Independence Day" at a friend's house shortly later when it was released on vhs and frankly, I was bored for much of it other than the special effects.
The end of Mars Attacks where they are defeated by music also felt a bit like an homage to the end of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes as well, as in the end of the movie, the tomatoes lose their powers and get turned back into regular tomatoes when the hear the “worst song ever made”, called “Puberty Love”, which is sung like the singer’s voice is changing while he singing the song.
I thought it was genius to incorporate the old Landmark Hotel and Casino demolition into the movie! I still can't believe that was 30 years ago already!

Mars Attacks! is still one of my favorite comedies of all time. The music added a great deal to that humor. Watch the original "The Day the Earth Stood Still" which had that wonderful lead theremin instrument, that was the inspiration for the music in Mars Attacks. Another fun fact: the "Ack ack ack-ack" dialog for the Martians was a place-holder scratch track that Tim Burton and his sound guy recorded that they intended to replace with a re-recorded version in post. But, they just were not able to recreate a version they liked as much as the temp. scratch track no matter how hard they tried so, they wound up just using their original temp scratch track.
Aaron Nelson do you know why Pahrump Nevada is the first town the aliens wanted to destroy? Because the late Art Bell hosted a radio show about UFOs (and crazy stuff) out of Pahrump Nevada
The first time I saw Mars Attacks in theaters, the film melted just as it was about to see the defeat of the martians. At first we thought it was one of the gags in the film, but nope, it really did melt!!! We got our money back and then went to see it again at a later time! I have always loved the film from day one, and it was disappointing that it failed at the box office. I bought it on laserdisc, and again on DVD. Elfman ' s music is great. I bought the CD as soon as it was available. Actually, if I remember correctly, I had to preorder it at one of the music stores back then. It is among my top five Elfman scores. Coincidence? Stern wrote his story in 1982? Excuse me but they both ripped off Attack of The Killer Tomatoes (1978). I thought more people would have seen that by now.

Good one Minty, love it as always. But $260 Million (US) budget!!!! It was actually $70 Million. The first film to cost $260 Million was Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End at $300 million and that wasn't until 2007. I love this film but always thought it was a bit of Hollywood dumbness having the human disguised alien need to chew nitrogen gum... Conversation I had after Mars Attacks. Me: Why did the beehive woman alien have to chew nitrogen gum? Our atmosphere is 78% nitrogen already, we survive on 21% Oxygen, that's scientifically stupid. My Mate: But you're OK with swapping heads with a dog? Me: .............. :-(
I can remember buying Mars Attacks cards from a vending machine in the grocery store. A nickel in the slot gave you five cards. My parents hated the cards because some of them were quite grotesque, but I sold the cards in about 1983 to a dealer for ten bucks each.
Something else I didn't know about "Mars Attacks": the cattle stampede & doughnut shop scenes were filmed less than one hundred miles from where I live. This was right before I got on the internet for the first time. I am certain that had I been on the internet when these scenes were filmed I would have known about it and could have driven to these filming sites to merely observe from a distance or offer to be an extra, a go-fer, or anything. The very idea of Tim Burton filming near my hometown and not knowing at the time was really a missed opportunity. The flaming cattle scene was filmed just outside of Lawrence, Kansas, a mere twenty miles away. The doughnut shop scene was filmed between Wichita & Emporia, Kansas--another easy drive. And I never saw anything in our local media that Tim Burton was filming his next epic in the Sunflower State. That should have been the headline in the newspaper, but then again, I can imagine the crew not wanting fans bothering them.
@@kittycatmeowmeow963 I like Caveman, but not nearly as much as When Women had Tails. If you can find that movie and appreciate oddball humor, it may be right up your alley.
I remember reading a story in SFX magazine a while after Mars Attacks! was released that said Warner Bros still wanted to make a sequel (it had done well in Europe) but on a lower budget. The plot was supposed to be that some of the Martians had been captured and they were going to escape and cause havoc. Jack Nicholson was going to make an appearance as the president’s ghost.
I took my 11 year old to see this back then, and I was expecting more of the “true” Mars Attacks from the Topps cards. We both thought it was goofy at first, but then we both liked it. We still joke about it today, and every now and then bust out the Slim Whitman Ahhhh-Ooooooo ! Lol.
Typically, when Americans try to make a silly movie, it turns out just to be stupid. Mars Attacks maintains its' silliness from start to finish. It's a treasure of silliness, and Slim Whitman saving the world is the "cherry on top".
I thought you were going to include the scene about the Landmark Hotel in Las Vegas, that was actually demolished, and the video of the implosion was used for the movie.
Yeah, when I first saw it back in '97 I had never heard of Jack Black. Was fun rewatching it many years later and realizing the dickhead brother is played by Jack Black.
Lord Krythic Yeah that had occurred to me also and this is coming from someone mildly on the spectrum myself. This person is not on the mild side at all. I can recognize a face pretty easily. Some though take everything they see literally and don't recognize the difference between different characters and actors.
These Martians in the film are so good at trying to conquer/take over/rule the world, as well as trying to cause alot of Havoc & Chaos that they would give Marvin the Martian and other Movie Martians a run for their space Money!
Never knew Alex Cox had interest. Would've been a interesting take indeed. Mars Attacks just went off the rails for me though. Especially Nicholson in the dual role, which didn't go anywhere. And the ending just made me appreciate Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes that much more. Tim really should've got the Zucker Bros. In on the script or production. Then the movie may have beaten Airplane! and such. It just stands as 6 of one, half dozen of the other for me still. Anyhow, good job as always Minty and Squiggles! :-)
Fun fact: the screenwriter Jonathan Gems did a book of interviews sharing his adventures with Tim Burton in MARS ATTACKS MEMOIRS Enjoy the ride ✌️😁behind the scenes I would appreciate if i could let the fans in your comment section know about this great book without being flagged as spam? Ack Ack
You forgot the biggest one about Mars Attacks. The art and look was based off of the trading cards but the main story was a remake of "Earth vs the Flying Saucers".
I'd love to see a Mars Attacks crossover with Megaman, Back to the Future, Pokemon, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle.... Oh man the possibilities are endless. Star Wars!
This movie is probably one of most craziest and funniest sci fi film ever made and i do actually enjoyed it for what it is and god bless Tim Burton for creating this sci-fi classic.
Dont let this distract you from the fact that when Paul Walker goes to Vin Diesel's house party in The Fast and the Furious 1, they're playing "I Got Hoes by Ludacris on the stereo. But in 2 Fast 2 Furious, Ludacris appears as street racer Tej Parker. So in the Fast & Furious Universe. who sang "I got Hoes"? Was it Tej? Was it Ludacris? Does Ludacris exist? And if not, what happened to the Hoes? Who got them now? Are the Hoes OK? Thanks Minty for helping me start my day off with a laugh 😂
I was with a friend of mine in L.A. and we ran into a friend of his, Greg Gein. We stopped to talk to him. He was a bit upset because of the day before he was removed from working on MARS ATTACKS. He was supposed to be in charge of the miniatures for the model animated sequences. He was told it was mostly time decision, in order to do puppet animation it would have taken at least two years to complete so Burton was told that he would lose the project if he didn't go CGI. From what I understand Burton was very upset about this and just wanted to be done with it at that point.
Mars Attacks had a stellar cast, so many talented actors and also a great comedy/sci fi film, Still remember when this film was first released like it was yesterday.
I worked on this movie for the DC/Virginia scenes. What a mess. It caused a major car wreck because of fans. Tim Burton is odd. He kept blowing his nose in his scarf. You could tell the production was a mess.
Playing this video on Tim Burton's birthday. Happy birthday to him, the man who gave us films like this one, Beetlejuice, Batman, and of course, The Nightmare Before Christmas.
I liked Mars Attacks more than Independence Day. The former was silly in a good way while the latter was silly in a bad way (the 3rd act more specifically).

Was that inflation adjusted?
I can remember buying Mars Attacks cards from a vending machine in the grocery store. A nickel in the slot gave you five cards. My parents hated the cards because some of them were quite grotesque, but I sold the cards in about 1983 to a dealer for ten bucks each.
Anyone have any idea what they are going for now? 2021
One of my favorite movies - laughed myself sick. Can never choose whether Mars Attacks or Galaxy Quest are my fav. Closely tied, perhaps.
Good double feature.
There isn't another movie out there that I love as much as my wife hates.
That, pretty much makes it perfect.
Try the movie "Caveman" with Ringo Starr. Most men love it while I've never met a woman who likes it.
My wife and I both love it.
@@johndunn6756 A movie starring Ringo Star that's about cavemen? Now this I gotta see.
@@kittycatmeowmeow963 I like Caveman, but not nearly as much as When Women had Tails. If you can find that movie and appreciate oddball humor, it may be right up your alley.
@@mermaid_at_heart213 I just saw a clip of it; it looks awesome.😄
I love the Disintegration effects in the film. I even try to recreate them in Photoshop and make short animations.
Elfman's score wouldn't have been mistaken for a Bernard Herrmann score but it was in the same class. Highest compliment possible!
The blowing up of the Landmark Hotel, was the actual implosion footage.
Jack Nicholson as president? I'm in.
Even better, he's a bipolar president.
One of the elements that made this movie so awesome is that Jack Nicholson was cast as the President of the United States.
"You can't handle the truth!"
We've had a terrible actor as president, we've currently have a womanizing reality star as president, so why not have a brilliant actor?
@@theuniversewithin74 "Ronald Reagan? The actor?? Who's vice president? Jerry Lee Lewis?"
I absolutely love this movie. And couldn't wait to play video game Destroy All Humans when it first came out. Love the campy-ness of them both
I took my 11 year old to see this back then, and I was expecting more of the “true” Mars Attacks from the Topps cards.
We both thought it was goofy at first, but then we both liked it. We still joke about it today, and every now and then bust out the Slim Whitman Ahhhh-Ooooooo ! Lol.
djwak59 The goofiness is what makes it hilarious. I especially love how randomly bloodthirsty and violent the aliens are.
Typically, when Americans try to make a silly movie, it turns out just to be stupid. Mars Attacks maintains its' silliness from start to finish. It's a treasure of silliness, and Slim Whitman saving the world is the "cherry on top".
13:33 Is it me, but, do I see KISS, Popeye and Optimus Prime?
🍩
Yes, IDW did multiple Crossovers.
Edit: Nevermind. Minty brings it up seconds later...
Mars Attacks was considered a parody of Independence Day? I thought Independence Day was a parody of War Of The Worlds.
Yea the score in mars attacks is the best part of the movie
Grandm from Mars Attacks is also the lady that played Juno the case worker in Beetlejuice.
I Do appreciate the Music in Mars Attacks !
I thought you were going to include the scene about the Landmark Hotel in Las Vegas, that was actually demolished, and the video of the implosion was used for the movie.
Wow I didn't know that Jack Nicholson was the cowboy too I guess that just shows what a good actor he is.
Hell I didn't know jack black was in it when I first saw it
Yeah, when I first saw it back in '97 I had never heard of Jack Black. Was fun rewatching it many years later and realizing the dickhead brother is played by Jack Black.
Really? It's not like he doesn't look and sound like Jack Nicholson in that role.
Lord Krythic Yeah that had occurred to me also and this is coming from someone mildly on the spectrum myself. This person is not on the mild side at all. I can recognize a face pretty easily. Some though take everything they see literally and don't recognize the difference between different characters and actors.
You may suffer from face blindness. Did you know either of them were him?
This channel would be so much better is the guy didn't try to be funny. Comes off so cringe!! Not funny at all
When I first saw this movie, I had absolutely no idea that it was directed by Tim Burton until just recently! XD
These Martians in the film are so good at trying to conquer/take over/rule the world, as well as trying to cause alot of Havoc & Chaos that they would give Marvin the Martian and other Movie Martians a run for their space Money!
Minty did the international sign of donut
This movie left scarrs on my brain as a kid but as I got older I really appreciated it haha
Fun fact: the screenwriter Jonathan Gems did a book of interviews sharing his adventures with Tim Burton in MARS ATTACKS MEMOIRS Enjoy the ride ✌️😁behind the scenes
I would appreciate if i could let the fans in your comment section know about this great book without being flagged as spam?
Ack Ack
Yes! I love this movie! Awesome as always, Minty!
I love this movie it’s so awesome I would love to see a new mars attacks movie 👽
Star Wars!
Nice one Minty... I remember seeing that movie and thought... those aliens are creepy AF...
Allen Funt???
I absolutely loved Mars Attacks and bought the DVD. People don't "get" how awesome it is. It's so quirky and fun❤
in this movie Natalie Portman looked very well
This movie is probably one of most craziest and funniest sci fi film ever made and i do actually enjoyed it for what it is and god bless Tim Burton for creating this sci-fi classic.
What does all of that have to do with the subject of this video?
@@Phaota Did you smile?
If Tej meets Ludacris does the reality implode?
@@Static1583 maybe Mars will attack?
You make no sence.
Love this funny movie 💖
The theme music to the movie is perfect, has an homage to 1950's sci-fi movie themes, especially The Thing, wild still having an epic, modern feel.
Mars Attacks had a stellar cast, so many talented actors and also a great comedy/sci fi film, Still remember when this film was first released like it was yesterday.
Thats because it was yesterday.
@@skyranger1366 Yes it's feels that way 23 years went by so fast.

Wait what... no. 5:22 the budget was 70 million not 260 million.
All star cast. This movie deserved an Oscar.
Arthea Boyd. The effects were pretty good. The music was good to.
A great film! Another fantastic top 10 minty!
Jack Nicholson voice “Whoa!!” $260 million budget??? It was 70 million. Love the videos Minty keep them coming.
1:15 TFW the act of skipping the predictable intro took longer than the actual predictable intro. XD
Alex Cox directed Sid and Nancy.
I worked on this movie for the DC/Virginia scenes. What a mess. It caused a major car wreck because of fans.
Tim Burton is odd. He kept blowing his nose in his scarf.
You could tell the production was a mess.
10 66 yeah, Steven Tyler did that with a scarf too...turns out he was snorting cocaine.
Tim Burton odd????? Now there's a shocker.🙃
Wierdfellas / DocMcCoyXYZ enough humble bragging already!
You omitted the legendary actress, SILVIA SIDNEY!!!!!!
Hi! Love this movie :)
I do wish it either showed more disaster and deaths, or showed more comedy and irony
Right ... because wiping out 1/3 of our government wouldn't have catastrophic, international consequences ...
Playing this video on Tim Burton's birthday. Happy birthday to him, the man who gave us films like this one, Beetlejuice, Batman, and of course, The Nightmare Before Christmas.
[Checks Oxford Dictionary] Nope, "casted" still not a real word.
You need to dictionise gooder.
writingexplained.org/cast-vs-casted
I liked Mars Attacks more than Independence Day. The former was silly in a good way while the latter was silly in a bad way (the 3rd act more specifically).
