McLaren p1 is one of my favourite cars of all time and Lego has done a great job replicating the smooth curves just using technic pieces. IMO this set is so cool and looks amazing. I don’t mind the brick build headlights either.
I understand your point about the functions on these sets. I just finished the Daytona SP3, and I've built the Lamborghini and the Bugatti. I know that they are going to be "sculptures" that will either sit on a table or hang on a wall, but it is a really cool sculpture that I spent the time to build myself. I build these sets precisely because I enjoy the complexity. I enjoy them more than the 1:10 scale cars because they are more complex. I particularly enjoyed the system-built front end and rear end on the Ferrari. Yes, the rear end was particularly challenging, but again, it's the challenge of figuring it out that I enjoy. And yes, for this price, one would expect that the instructions would have been published correctly! Thank you for all the information you offer on Lego sets!
The comparison side by side on the turning table. Wow. Really good. I watched several reviews. But your way pleased me most. I agree. The sian is also still my number one of all these models.
I know a lot of people complain about the blue pins ruining the look of their sets, yet since Lego insists color coding pieces to ensure easier identification of pieces, the obvious solution would be to keep the pins blue while recoloring the caps of the pins to match the color of the exterior/interior.
Here's a quick mod I did. If you take the white pin in the front suspension that holds the brake caliper and put a double bend in it. You can change to the correct angle for the brake caliper as in the real car. Instead of vertical like all the other cars. Check step 580. And look at the photos of actual car. Love your vids, keep posting.
I 100% agree with you on the Lambo Sian being the best among them all. It’s the only 1:8 supercar I have bought nearly four years ago. All these 5 cars have their own flaws I think, it just depends on what you can bear and care the most.
This color is tearing me apart I love this set but the choice of this awful green is really not to my taste, they could have made it a regular yellow from Lambo or purple like the alternate coloring for the Sian (if I'm not mistaken) but of course they logically chose the original green Sian and I can't stomach this color otherwise the set I fantastic.
@@AB-dd4jz Yes…you’re right, it was’t the best color chosen for that car. They should’ve used the sand/olive green that they have used on this year’s speed champions Lambo V12 Vision GT supercar.
I really don't understand what everyone's problem is with the front end. 🤷♂️ I think it looks pretty accurate when you put the dicast model and the lego side by side.
Szia Balazs, in terms of look I agree with you. It's not a 1:1 replica, but it does its job. Also previous lego supercars weren't 100% accurate, but we have to remember it's a lego rendition of something, so if it is close enough some degree of freedom can be tolerated. Regarding the gearbox: I don't remember which was my opinion 2 years ago with the Ferrari, but now I kinda sit in the middle. I feel like a bigger (and more expensive) set as a supercar MUST include some functions, and a gearbox is definitely one, and if they are to include one then they better include a "complete" one (i.e. a 7/8 speed in a 7/8 speed car, not a mini one with just 2/4 different gears). But at the same time, as you said, there are other features other than gearboxes. The bruno P1 is a nice example, although not perfectly working 100% of the times, the features included justify the missing gearbox. The problem is that this kind of cars don't feature that many distinctive features that can be translated in lego form. One of the best supercars for me is the CaDa Mercedes AMG One, where the only real feature is the motorization. But they were smart enough to include it in a way that they not only provided a feature, but they did it in a way that they replicated the hybrid nature of the real car, with electric motors replicating the ones of the real AMG One, and a pullback motor replicating the KERS/ERS. And they are useless, because ultimately the set will sit on a shelf, but you still got the experience of building it and have a set that is 99% accurate with the real car, also providing something different from a gearbox. I'm fine with this McLaren, because it includes a new kind of gearbox compared to the last 3 supercars, I can justify LEGO including it since they upgraded their portfolio. But if we are to see in the future a next supercar with the same kind of gearbox, then I'll not be pleased. Maybe having electric supercars in the future will also make so that lego will be forced to include something different in terms of functions, getting rid of complex (useless) gearboxes, and including something else
All that said, I'd still be interested in a gearbox in a car that truly justified it. I would love to see a lego 1:8 scale F1 car with functions like working DRS (that could be truly actuated, not posed like in the McLaren and in the Mercedes) as well as maybe a gearbox, since it would be a design nightmare to include both a gearbox as well as a paddle shifting mechanism in such a slim silhouette.
I personally am not a fan of the P1 but the way you addressed the problems without angering either side of audience is truly a feat in itself! And I agree, out of all the 1:8 scale Lego Supercars I own, The Sian is just too good to be true!!
The gearbox in such big scale model is useless until you try to motorize it somehow. I wish Lego would just implement control+/poweredup style miniaturized metal-gers-inside gearbox that would make it so they don't take up so much space in those sets which would mean more place for making the model more like the original car on the inside, as well as motorizing those sets would make more sense with a gearbox, because there are so many moving parts in there that the friction has to affect the performance.
are we talking performance on a display piece now? dont get me wrong, the gearbox is pretty useless, but still cool how the designer could fit something so complicated into such a small body
I bought it Day 1 and started building... and just finished it yesterday. It was a fantastic build experience, outside of the clunky gearbox. I love the look of it and the functionality, and it'll look good sitting next to the other 4 on my shelves :D
Really appreciate your point that "you may not be the target audience" for a certain set. I find a lot of the AFOL community gets very negative about sets/decisions they don't like. If you don't like something, don't buy it!
Hey there, I always come to your videos when building a new Lego set. I just had a question about the 1:8 scale Lego sets. I am interested in purchasing one for the first time and I was wondering if you could recommend a Lego set to buy out of all the 1:8 scale Lego sets. I am looking for something that has a lot of great detail and a nice build up in construction for display but can also be used for play if I wanted to. Thanks!
really like this more after these 2 reviews. seeing the Porsche and McLaren next to each other clearly shows the color difference - nice!. i have usually waited to have the JB70 Pimp-up Rebrickable version to build prior to building these vehicles like I did with the Porsche, Bugatti, and Lambo. These RB version usually fixes a lot of issues. Knowing me, I will buy on Aug 1 to obtain the GWP and because I have over 25,000 LEGO points. Even without having the gearbox and motor exposed, i love removing the body and using a motor to go through the gears. I still need to figure out the Hybrid and Electric gear option differences.
As I mentioned before, here where I live in Malaysia, the price is set at 1899 Ringgit, which is a mere 370 Euros. I even got a special deal from my AD (him being the importer) so I am all good to get it as soon as it’s available. 😊
I can't help myself but the front headlights just look off. The light strip is quite acurate, but without the light body in gray or something like that the lights look more like McLaren 520 than P1. Some element on the outer edges that goes further down would help a lot. Or just change the black piece below the white claw to gray color.
I think it's the best looking one out of the five. I would like the Lamborghini but I can't stand the color. So if I had to choose one, it would probably be this one since I can't get the Bugatti anymore.
I love this "Hot Take"! I agree that the complex gearbox would be better suited to a stand-alone engine set that has all the parts visible and is operated with a motor. The car simply need forward, neutral, and reverse.
Given the choice between all five models seeing the comparisons I'd either go with the Bugatti or the Lamborghini. It would be a fun challenge to attempt building one of these given the complexity, size of these models. Pretty much decided on the G Wagon, as I think it's a great comprehensive/functional build, detailed, and displayable, and reasonably priced being more pieces than the Land Rover that came out many years before it. Completely agree about the gearbox and great to see it streamlined from enormous block of back to back gears in the Land Rover which made is a nightmare to build offering not much else to the overall functionality of the vehicle. Really looking forward to review/comparisons for this one.
Overall, props to the designer for accurately depicting the car with LEGO parts. It's a shame we didn't get a Senna or Speedtail but for a 5th generation Ultimate set this thing does exactly what it's supposed to. Price is high but eh Anyone still have their Porsche? Man, time flies doesn't it :)
No need to wait a few months for retailers, already available for pre-order (with shipping on 1st September) for "just" 340 at Luck Bricks for example. ;)
Honestly, people complain too much these days about Lego. I think Lego has stopped caring about what many people think, as they can't seemed to be please with anything, and I can't blame them
I have the Ferrari one and I wish I bought the Lambo. The Ferrari is flimsy and because the roof is removable it feels like it will snap in half. I know these sets are for display only so it is what it is. I’m glad to hear that this one is better in that regard.
I would like to have the McLaren P1 as a part pack. The gear unit offers enough material to fully equip 2 models with our own inventory + the new parts [drum and fork]. Mods for the Unimog / Arroc.
The color looks a lot more yellow than orange when next to all the prior super cars. Glad to see. Also, love the new side mirror. The older mirrors looks ridiculous 😅
I wonder, what will happen, if we swap wheels with the Porsche? Although the overall tyre size should remain close, will the smaller rim affect the look? And concerning the gearbox, I think now you've got a point, the gearbox is more of a gimmick, which could have been replaced by more cool and noticeable features.
These cars just make me miss sets like Big Red. I love building complex gearbox mechanisms, but it always seems to go to waste in these cars for the reasons you've mentioned. I wish Lego would put these gearboxes back in their big-budget play models, but they are kinda counter to the RC focus of Control+.
I agree about the gearbox taking too much of a centre stage. It is really a play feature that now has no value when the steering knob is no longer there
I love the mclaren p1 but for that price you can buy an exceptionally beautiful model of it that would do much better for display. I understand the draw of Lego, but i believe the building experience is the only aspect that is worth going with Lego rather than a model.
I like the supercars series, but they could remove the useless gearbox and lower the price or add real usefull feature since almost all theses cars finish as a display.
Nothing wrong with the audio, think you have blown all systems from viewers with another great video! : ) I honestly did not have any issues with sound.
Just wanted to say I appreciated your work on this video, as with all the others. You sometimes make it too easy to decide to purchase another set... 🤣
Thank you for the review ! This McLaren has many good things. Each cars has it's step up. The Porsche was the first but with complexe gearbox shifting and holes in the body. They fixed it with the Bugatti but it became too heavy for suspension and the gearbox had some issues. They fixed it with the Lamborghini with frame and complexe system for suspension but the issue was it's not a well known car and the suspension doesn't have so much effect. They fixed it with the Ferrari with big new spring but the gear box was now old and it's still not a well known car. Lego finally fix it with great new parts for the gearbox and a famous car. So to resume this P1 has the glory of 1/8 scale, the best gearbox ever, best suspension ever. For the body, only the Porsche and the Bugatti has a charm (and 4 wheels drive). So personally I would build the Bugatti with the new gearbox and the new suspensions to get the best of everything ! (The Ferrari is the worst because it's juste the Lambo with new suspension).
I really like how the model looks. Lamborghini wasn't that exciting for me, but this one has so many fluid curves in the finished model, very cool. And also new gearbox pieces are awesome. I'm currently waiting for a review of an offroad set (Mercedes I think?) that has a differential lock. I am trying to design a lego technic axle with diff lock myself as well with the previous generation gearbox pieces and it's not very neat. Hopefully the new parts will change that!
The McLaren P1 (589.99) is more expensive than the Ferrari Daytona SP1 (559.99) in Canada. Though at the time i bought it for 499.99 CAD. At least over here, it's a significant increase vs the last model (even in current pricing). For this set, i'll be waiting for a sale instead of buying it day one like the Daytona.
Hey Balazs! What is your opinion on Lego continuing to not integrate RC functions into their 1:8 models? The size/volume of these models is predestined to incorporate RC functions. If the gearbox, which is unnecessary anyway, had to be deleted in order to accommodate these features, that would be tolerable. In addition, RC would be appropriate in view of the high set prices alone.
I shared my opinion about it before, I agree with LEGO. I don't think RC functions are required in a 1:8 supercar. It will be super slow, or motors will suffer, there's no point to have a Ferrari or Lamborghini crawler.
@@RacingBrick Thank you for answering! I get your point. …Unless they would implement new, more powerful motors adequate for the size/weight of the 1:8 models. But then they would charge 600€ or so.
I never understood why they would design such a complex and elaborate mechanisms such as this gearbox, in what is basically a display model. I would understand if the model would be electrified, but...
Because Technic ISN'T SUPPOSED TO BE FOR DISPLAY MODELS! That may be what it's become, but the entire point of the Technic system from the get-go was to build functional models that recreate the mechanisms inside various machines, and educate the builder on how things work. The gearbox is there because there needs to be SOMETHING technically impressive to justify making an enormous Technic car, otherwise it doesn't belong in the Technic line anymore and would be better off as a system set.
Tbh it looks really cool and I’m not a big McLaren fan by any means. I have all the 1/8 super cars except for the Porsche 😭. Desperately wanting it for my collection. Except it’s like 1k. I really hope Lego brings it back from retirement. I remember being a kid with no job and no money and never got to get it. My favorite would probably still be the Bugatti because of the 2 tone colors and the shape over all looks great. My least favorite would have to be the Lamborghini. Only because the inconsistency of the green was driving me nuts. I look forward to getting the McLaren and building it. I really hope the next super car is pagani. It’s my dream car since I was 16 or 17. And I love that the color isn’t the same as the Porsche. And I hope they make a super car with the grey colors or purple.
Thanks for a thorough and enjoyable pair of reviews of this set. I really like it, including the new wing mirrors 😂. I don't like the price, though. I'll be waiting a year for it to drop significantly
It’s pretty cool, but honestly not a must have for me like the Lamborghini was. Also I sometimes still feel like my fingers hurt from building the Lamborghini lol
Imho these cars should have a working, complex gearbox imho purely for the fact that the building experience of it adds a massive deal to the enjoyment of the set. Yes, this is a massive display-model but for me the buidling experience of technic sets is way more important then the final model. I want to learn about the subject I'm building and be wowed by the technical solutions. Skipping that would in my opinion remove the value of a technic set compared to a system set, which are ultimately more realistic looking than any technic set can be.
I'm just curious, how much do you understand of the gearbox during building, how the different elements work? Don't you think it would require some information in the manual?
@@RacingBrick fully agree with you that the manual should explain better what you are building (if adding any explanation at all), same goes for the podcast but I guess that is more difficult to do. So indeed I do not fully understand what I'm building during those phases but it's a neat and enjoyable puzzle to figure it out along the way
I don't have any big car from Lego. Is it better to buy this or used 8880? 8880 is simpler model but I can better see the mechanisms and understand them.
I 100% agree with racing brick beautiful cars and I understand this toy is a luxury but 450 plus for things you’ll never see is insane get rid of a gear box easily could knock a 100 bucks off
I just saw in another review that when you push the car the wheels squeak. Not sure if that person made abuilding error or if that is an issue with the set.
Is the order of gears proper this time? In previous 1:8 supercars pistons move faster with increasing (with the right-handed paddle) the gear which is not authentic. With new gearbox element in Yamaha gearbox works in a correct order so I was hoping that we will see the same thing in the new 1:8 supercar. I would be grateful for your answer Balazs as I was really curious about this fact
I wonder how much cheaper the set would be without the complicated gearbox. If it’s significant enough I’d rather they just remove it or replace it with other features.

Price is high but eh
Anyone still have their Porsche? Man, time flies doesn't it :)
Bought my Porsche 911GT3 RS on TEMU for $114.47 last January. Looks like Lego Technic next to the others.
No need to wait a few months for retailers, already available for pre-order (with shipping on 1st September) for "just" 340 at Luck Bricks for example. ;)
Honestly, people complain too much these days about Lego. I think Lego has stopped caring about what many people think, as they can't seemed to be please with anything, and I can't blame them
the disproportion on the headlights is the most visible for me so i really hope someone will make a more proportional variation of them for this set
I know it is expensive however, can’t wait to get it… as always great review Sir!!!!
Can we get a purple car now?
Since you mentioned the front kinda looking like a corvette I can’t unsee it. I still like the look though, the color is really great
I like the look of this set, I think the design is amazing when you consider the part use. Thanks for another great detailed review!
Quite expensive parts pack
@@M-Filipyes ^^ but I have a lot of fun modding and freely building models. for €200 it would be worth considering.
The color looks a lot more yellow than orange when next to all the prior super cars. Glad to see. Also, love the new side mirror. The older mirrors looks ridiculous 😅
You should definitly check out the CADA AMG ONE. Proportions are good, Functions are great, no weird colors and the Price is spot on!
I did check it out, full review on my other channel. It has its pros, but also its cons, like all sets.
Dang O.O This is a really neat build. About the same price as a Nitro RC Car too
These cars just make me miss sets like Big Red. I love building complex gearbox mechanisms, but it always seems to go to waste in these cars for the reasons you've mentioned. I wish Lego would put these gearboxes back in their big-budget play models, but they are kinda counter to the RC focus of Control+.
I’m so excited for the g wagon
I think I could become more interested in this set after it is released and people begin creating ALT builds for it.
I agree about the gearbox taking too much of a centre stage. It is really a play feature that now has no value when the steering knob is no longer there
I hope this McLaren set is the last of the series. It’s the best one yet and my shelve is full after I add this set ;)
I'm a bit disappointed the ford gt was a smaller set because i was really hoping it was going to be one of the big ones.
How long do you think the lambo will stay out for ? Need to save for that then the p1
Hope to see review on 42177 soon enough 😅
Excelente análisis como siempre. Comparada con otras es muy superior y objetiva
I just noticed the tires thread is new too
The McLaren P1 (589.99) is more expensive than the Ferrari Daytona SP1 (559.99) in Canada. Though at the time i bought it for 499.99 CAD. At least over here, it's a significant increase vs the last model (even in current pricing). For this set, i'll be waiting for a sale instead of buying it day one like the Daytona.
thanks. Waiting 42175!!!
@@RacingBrick
Thank you for answering!
I get your point.
…Unless they would implement new, more powerful motors adequate for the size/weight of the 1:8 models.
But then they would charge 600€ or so.
If Lego payed this much attention to detail, why would they ignore the reverse gear? Thanks for your review!
I think it looks good and as I like to display my lego it will look great with my other cars
Having bigger rims is better. At least the car looks properly supported as opposed to skipping leg days.
What’s the best way to keep track of the price / what websites?
Just checking constantly ?
i defn would be pushing it around to test the gear box
Now then waiting for the 42177 set review ☺️
I'd ditch the gearbox in a heartbeat for motorised / RC features like Cada has with the Mercedes AMG One.
Do you know the Spania GTA: GTA Spano? The front looks like it.
The yellow car from need for speed? Yeah it looks like it!
@@458italiap Do you mean the Polestar?
It’s pretty cool, but honestly not a must have for me like the Lamborghini was. Also I sometimes still feel like my fingers hurt from building the Lamborghini lol
I think the shaping of the A-pillar and roof is pretty bad actually. Makes it barely recognizable.
It makes sense. The windshield extends way beyond the a-pillar all the way to the flex cable over the front axle.
The car is definitely good, but I wish it had a purer yellow.
So indeed I do not fully understand what I'm building during those phases but it's a neat and enjoyable puzzle to figure it out along the way
which one is the best choice to get
Where did you get the wall habging plates?
I don't have any big car from Lego. Is it better to buy this or used 8880? 8880 is simpler model but I can better see the mechanisms and understand them.
Just finished building the ford gt,has alot of the same features for a whole lot less.
This is the first time I've seen it so soon! I'm looking forward to the Mercedes Benz G500 video too!! From Japan🇯🇵
they need to up the functionality. Make a convertible or at least lifting front axle.
The sound quality 💀 (I still watch your video because the content you make is awesome)
bro u should try cada's Mclaren P1 AKA assasin XR it sick!
I checked it, didn't fall in love with all those connectors forming the hood
@@RacingBrick ah ok
When will we get your Lego Technic 42177 review? I'm eagerly awaiting your detailed vid :)
A few more days...
So a brown pin for the gear that raises the wing?
Guess I’ll be ordering bulk black 3L pins before I start
this is the best 1:8 car out of all 5, for me it is amazing!! 😍😍😍
The left shifter makes the pistons go faster, which means that's shifting down.
I wonder how much cheaper the set would be without the complicated gearbox. If it’s significant enough I’d rather they just remove it or replace it with other features.
