This is very useful for a lot of people, I think... I do this exactly the same way with Cubase for over 20 years now. It's the best way to monitor with effects😀.
I just want to say a huge Thank you for this video! I recently bought a Scarlet 4i4 which doesn’t come with a Direct Monitoring dial that my old Roland had. So I didn’t know how to get rid of the DM signal on my guitar. Which meant I had to learn to live with it. But thanks to this video, it makes perfect sense to just turn the DM signal down to 0 in the controller app mixer. Now all I get is the signal from Cubase which is what I want. Thanks Dom!
Thankk u so much. No I can stream with some vocal effects dom.. U are the best. I always had some latency issues. Just tried it out after this video and it works perfectly. Thankksssss. Any tips for full Vocal Chains? Lol
Great vid Dom. I would add one suggestion though. When using a send effect like reverb, I find that it is better to set up the FX on a separate track that is set to the same input. That way you can easily monitor what you I’ve previously recorded on your current track while punching in.
I've done a split like this and it works great. But I use an offboard device for FX... E.g. do a hardware split prior to hitting Cubase and then send the wet signal to the monitor track, and then the dry to your recording track. Can be done with something like the Quad Cortex, Helix, Axe Fx... or if your interface has enough IO to support some pedal loop. I have a mote Motu UltraLite which I use to do this. This way all your wet signal in your headset can effectively uber low (idk if I can say 0) latency, and you can also record the DI. Same principal as what Dom demonstrated, and if you have the gear its perhaps a little lighter on the PC if you have gigantic projects.
That last bit with monitoring vocals through reverb with zero latency is exactly what I wanted to learn. I have one particular singer that does not like even the slightest delay in her vocal while tracking, so it needs to be direct monitoring; however, I always wanted a way to hear her vocal through reverb too. This video was a help but I wish I would have seen it earlier before I went and bought an Antelope interface just to have that real time reverb monitoring.
Hi Dom. What you're explaining is fine when you have a project with few tracks, but if you have a large project you can't work with such a small buffer and if you increase it there is a considerable latency.
Hey Dom, great video! I have had a UR-44C for a couple years but never got this set up right, how can I turn down the level of the audio going into a channel? When i try to open the UR-C mixer with Cubase open, i get an error message, thank you!
I’ve always thought it would be great to have some sort of monitoring prefader logic built into cubase for this purpose …. It’s a bummer when you’re cutting vocals as you describe & your fader has to be turned down .. often you want to playback what you just recorded as you go along & this method causes your dry playback to be muted by default
I'm a little bit confused as to why you set the input as stereo? I always do this in mono with the output set to stereo. To be honest I don't even know how after setting it as stereo, how you still got a mono recording anyway?
I have followed these instructions exactly and I don't get the same result. When Dom makes the "GTR Monitor" Track it only has the Record Enabled button lit but he gets input showing on the EQ, then he turns it down and enables monitoring. I can't get any sound out or get Cubase to recognize the guitar input until I click on the monitoring button, it's just dead until I do that, I thought that was kinda the point of the monitoring button! How is the Channel Strip picking up the guitar without the monitoring button on? Pretty sure I have it setup the same as Dom.
I find the latency issue never goes away even on my Mac M series. UAD is a better option with zero latency and of course allows you to record dry and direct AND separate with effects on another track. I would also caution against this fiddling with amp simulators after recording etc - it makes sense for delays and reverb to make a guitar or bass sit in the mix. But it’s not hard to get a decent guitar recorded either mic real amp or with simulator/modelling on the way in. Otherwise you can end up with a zillion options x 100 tracks and that record never gets finished!
But when I record electric guitars I always choose a CPU friendly plugin as a insert that dosent affect as mush as my better sounding plugins do. Just so I can monitoring a distorted sound when I recording. After recording I remove the insert and just hear the raw DI I thought? I cant hear anything "baked in" from the plugin I used or? I´m confused??! :-)
The effect is recorded only if you put it on the input channel insert. There are also ways to record both (clean-wet) on two different tracks at the same time but this involves a bit of internal routing
No, been doing something like this for a very long time - works great. However, I would suggest doing the monitoring from a separate track set to the same input so that you can more easily monitor punch ins.
@@parodifair4459 I thought it might be a new feature with less delay. I tried it with both Autotune and reverb. The reverb was okay but the autotune is unusable imo. After spending years with direct monitoring its hard to ignore the delay.
Yeah but if the project is loaded with a bunch of stuff you shall have to increase the buffer, thus the latency and it'll take a huge impact specially for the guitar recording method, not so much for the vocals because you'll keep hearing the direct vocal signal, and the reverb won't matter much if it comes out a little later, unless the latency gets pretty high!
I work different. This is not usefull, because i keep a lot of attention not to use inside Cubase their effects. Main problem if you share projects they are not compatible with different DAWs. So any effect and mix is done in Unify. If I share the Unify patch than it’s absolute independent from the DAW the other side use.. Cubase still have a total deficit if you do collaborations. Same problem with Cubase VST Connect. I bought the Pro Edition but here the same. Close to useless. We do today a livestream arround effects.
@@taxiwilliams can be usefull for non professional non collaborative work. There exists thousands of hobby users. But for professional approach it’s more a handicap. We do tomorrow a livestream. If there is some one using FL for example yours mix is useless in case of collaboration.
What this video is showing, imho, is exactly how to record audio tracks without ‘printing’ effects inside, so you can share the ‘pure’ waves file recording to your collaborators for using them in other daws and with other effects…
In case yo want to share ‘wet’ tracks you can always export them separately, so you can choose which to use. Dom has done an interesting video about bakup projects

Boom!
8:44 I think I would leave the fader up, and just switch the reverb to full wet, so you aren't duplicating the primary signal with latency.
Nice Man Love Your Videos Question ? Can You Use A Auto Tune Plugin Instead Of The Reverb Plugin Tracking Vocals Thanks
I know he mentions a reverb plugin specifically but yes, ANY plug-in will work fine. Autotune, delay, pitch shift, flanger, etc...
