As I mentioned before I´m very happy that I found - finally - someone doing vlogs about rallying in such a fantastic car ! Not on the pro level like Andreas Mikkelsen or MSport their self, so it would be nice to see how you do the maintenance, all the stuff that happens "behind the scenes" around the event you visit, off course as mentioned before the tire decisions, and - onboards 😁- a big ask I know, but you asked... Thank you very much for the content, looking forward to what´s coming up...
Thank Gregor. I will do my best for you mate 👍🏻👍🏻
Truly speaking these cars are well engineered and have done very well in most rallies.
@@Otiesh you’re not wrong.
While I find the actual car content interesting, I personally love to watch the 'behind the scenes' at the event you're competing on, pre-event prep and the logistics pre and after event. there's superb content in your channel so far. keep it up.
Super, I will try my best to keep that aspect going. Thanks for you comment
I would love a video that talked about tyres....what you use, what you have used in the past, when you know the correct time to use what compount etc. Tyre cost vs compound vs lifespan maybe.
That’s an excellent suggestion. I shall definitely do that. That’s a video in itself.
Thanks
Thanks for the suggestion Baz.
Same goes for which wheels you run (especially in tarmac trim).
I'm not a rallyist, just a rally fan, but this video made me give you an immediate subscribe.
That’s really nice of you, Chris. Thanks for your comment. I’m so pleased you like the content. 😊
As a new R5 owner, I’m watching with interest
Good to hear. I’m also pretty new to an R5! When did you get yours?
Richard I’m loving the content- really interested in running costs and how they compare to your E6- my gut feeling is that if ( and that’s a big if!) one we’re to run an E6-10, lifting components as you will with your R5 then costs won’t be dissimilar- but I’m happy to be persuaded otherwise!
Keep up the good work and as ever, keep including your 4 legged chum too😝
@@ashleyreid3141 it’s a good point. I’ll keep that in mind for another vid. Puppy is on standby too !
Enjoying the videos. Nice to see some grassroots racing stuff on youtube. Love to see some in-car footage!
Coming soon!
I’m sure most have said the same thing but I would love to see onboards, breakdowns after the race, your maintenance before and spares on stage. And your general feelings with the car over a period of time. Absolutely loving the content so far
Thanks. I’ve got an update for you all regarding incar…
Je suis français pilote de rally en championnat de France t’es vidéo son super tu me donne de l’inspiration pour ma saison en vidéo tanks
That’s great to hear Quentin. Bonne chance
Even my simple 2017 Fiesta SE, drives like a proper car.
Yes, a really good chassis on the fiesta.
@@Richard_Weaver Yes, indeed! WRC heritage.
@@Richard_Weaver Subscribed btw!
Running costs and Maintenance, what you can do yourself as a clubman and what requires a specialist,
That’s a great choice also. Noted!
I think if you grow this group Richard and set up spreadsheets processes maintenence recordings etc it will sure help us all....get back out there on a budget
Thanks for another good video Richard, It will be nice just to follow along the journey, I personally like all the pre and on event prep side of things so look forward to seeing that sort of content,
Thanks very much. I’ll get a video together for the end of the week 👍🏻😄
Id be interested in how many hours the Diffs, box and engine do between refreshs, whats the maintenance schedule between events and yearly. In addition what gets checked on event between stages etc.
I’ll dig out the M-Sport service schedule.
THIS! As well as the rebuild schedule for the Reigers, even the tarmac suspension ones.
First started watching these videos after spectating at the Clacton rally and told some mates about them. Love the R5. Charlies great and Richard is an interesting guy. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for the feedback mate. I love Charlie too!
Really good Richard please it up, great to hear a clubman speaking on his experiences.. 👍
Thanks mate. Glad you like the content. Nothing much like it about, so thought I should give it a go!
Never miss leg day Richard :) - great video - I would be very interested to see what set up you have for spare wheels if you have any and what you have to change a wheel in the way of jack / tools - keep up the good work sir
Will do a little review of that aspect mate.
Great insight, good to know as i’m in the market for one!
Glad it was helpful! Hope you find a good car. Tim Gore at TG Motorsport has a couple. One left hand drive and one right hand drive.
Really really love the videos/content.
Super. Thanks mate
Thank you for the insights so far Richard. I'd be curious if you could dive a bit deeper into braking and cornering. What contributes to the performance difference compared to the Evo? Going into as much technical detail, comparing geometries, etc, as possible would be fantastic. Having watched some onboards, it seems as though there is very little body roll, yet a decent amount of dive under braking. I imagine this contributes to driver's confidence while braking into a corner, yet the reduced body roll improves responsiveness during turn in. Knowing these cars are softly sprung, I'm guessing this is largely controlled by the roll centers and roll bars. Would definitely appreciate seeing and understanding how these cars were engineered to perform as they do.
Sam. Thank you for your reply. I think I may disappoint you sadly, as I have almost no technical understanding of suspension. I just know what I like, but not how to achieve it. I like softly spring cars for the reason you mention, that being feedback and control. It is generally regarded that a car that is stiff will go quicker in most situations (to a point), but being able to keep it on the road is the important part! I have no skills in setting cars up or understanding dampers I am ashamed to say. It’s witchcraft. With my evo I just never touched it. Now Neil Buckley runs the R5 I let him do whatever and tell him if I like it or not.
All good Richard, I appreciate the honesty. Perhaps I’ll think of some driver focused questions in the future. Until then, enjoy that beauty of a car and good luck in your next event!
Thanks Sam. That’s very kind of you.
Enjoying the videos, Richard. It is nice seeing a bit more behind the scenes. A couple of questions - are there any issues with running a car like this an amateur? Do they require any checks in terms of the electronics/mapping, or is it all fit-and-forget, so doesn't require any specialist attention? Also, I know you haven't had to do any major overhaul work yet, but what are your expectations on that front? What are the service intervals on engine/gearbox/diffs etc? It would be interesting to know how the running costs compare to the Evo and the Escort. Keep up the good work!
That’s a great set of questions, which includes and expands things already touched on by others. I shall give an in-depth response.
@@Richard_Weaver Great, thanks Richard.
Just found your channel, and watching with interest! I'd be interested in the smaller details, tyres, suspension settings, brakes driving feel... Good stuff you're doing, keep it up!
Will add to the list. Thanks for the suggestion 👍🏻😄
Think costs will be most people interest!
Yes. Hideous topic! Definitely will be covering that one 🤣👍🏻
Nice 👍
Do a video on the all wheel drive set up! Here in the states there are no awd kits for the fiesta! Thank you
Hi Kenny. The AWD system is something specific to M-Sport, using Sadev transmission components.
@@Richard_Weaver Yes, the R5/Rally 2 AWD setup would be very difficult, involved and yes co$tly to adapt to a base or ST Fiesta, even if one could coax one out of Mr. Wilson's Cumbrian operation.
It might be more feasible to try and adapt the more reasonably priced Rally 3 setup (again IF you could even get the parts/kit), but then you still must deal with the basically not streetable Sadev sequential 'box, and it's requisite frequent rebuilds. ☹
When I was at university many many year ago I always wondered how a rally car could be made into a daily - I was driving a sorted 1380cc mini that I would dance down B Roads in around Bristol / Bath area
Always wanted to know what it'd be like to use for a daily driver, like driving it to the corner store for couple of drinks and a pack of smokes. :)
Not fun. Noisy, tight diffs make it hard to manoeuvre. Very little steering lock and extremely limited side and rear visibility.
They are only designed to be, and happy being, driven flat out.
@@Richard_Weaver Thanks for the insight. I bet. Beautiful car Richard, do you sim plus race? Getting started rallying here in the states here rn, shopping for first car/doing the ARA registration.
I highly recommend LFS over most sims but personal preference.
No. I don’t have any form of computer console or sim. I occasionally do an auto test, maybe a test, but generally I just do an event.
Wanted to hear it 😢
Check the other vids mate. The Abingdon one has a snippet and the Clacton one. Also the testing an coaching at Gwynnespeed too. 👍🏻👍🏻
Question I was wondering is it best to run a car though a small business ? recreational business not sure on this, or is it worth it! thinking of parts sponership and stuff
I don’t think it’s worth it and the tax position is extremely questionable!
Hi Richard good to see you last weekend. I didn’t notice are you still running on Coopers?
Dmack/cooper. Same thing.
What do you do for a living? Are these cars bought outright or financed?
Sorry I missed your comment, I covered this in another video. “Am I still a clubman”
how long do parts last, and how much parts cost, videos of servicing, and any tuning electronic side of things.. can we see compare up against standard performance cars to see acceleration, braking and handling
That’s a really great list of suggestions, duly noted
@@Richard_Weaver and a free passenger ride for best ideas 😂
We could potentially do a raffle!
I'm guessing this has a different gearbox? I thought all R5s had a sequential stick rather than paddles?
Just a paddle shift fitted to the Sadev in the car (same box as all other R5 fiestas). It’s the WRC paddle kit retro fitted by M-Sport. It’s not homologated. Otherwise, the specification is no different to the rest of them.
@@Richard_Weaver Yes, even the current Rally 1 cars must now use a floor mounted shifter.
Paddle shift? So it's like a R5+ spec?
I’m not sure on the actual definitive, but it has the evo kit, not sure if it makes it a +? I think the + used the focus WRC turbo.
What's the top speed off the R5?
Not very high, about 186kph. They don't need it.
Running costs and maintenance
That will be another video coming soon!
How heavy is the steering compared to a road car?
It’s perfect weighted and gives lovely feed back. The power steering is electric and at low speeds turns easily, but it feels like it weights up at speed. It all feels very natural.
@@Richard_Weaver So they use a re-programmed ratio ST steering rack, or is it a whole new bespoke electric rack??
I don’t know what the rack is. Apparently it’s not a fiesta rack, but something else from the Ford range. Maybe an S-Max??
How much was it to buy? Was it hard to get one and how did you get it?
Also noted. I will weave these into a suitable video. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
£135,000
I’d like to know how you get the car MOT sorted. I know they’re Road legal but surely they require a lot of work to pass one
Noted mate. Will cover.
MOT next week...
Maybe next time you can get an AI to drive it? It will be quicker and easier still. Bring back proper cars please, relatable ones with manual gearboxes and no electronic stuff. The driver is supposed to do the work, not the car....
Understand what your saying, I’ve got a mk1 escort rally car too. I would say that the R5 is as close as driving an escort as you’ll get in a modern rally car, because the chassis is so similar. The R5 is easy to drive, but very rewarding. There are no active diffs in the car, so the only driver aids are the paddle shift. Other than that it’s much the same as any other car.
Historic rallying is alive and well, with H-pattern gear boxes, but the rallying world moved on from that last century. There’s still a place for the cars you describe, but unless you’ve experienced a modern car like an R5 I’d reserve judgment. They still make you sweat!
@@Richard_Weaver Even some of the extremely prepped old Mk1 & Mk2 Escorts are now sporting sequential boxes behind their Millingtons. 😉
