I am a chinese and went to Laos 4 times on vocation. Truly sorry about us being rude to people in other countries. Literally when i was walking kn the street in Laos and my rude people (chinese) walking past me I frowned and was like “f…k off you cheeky bastards”. China, for the past decades, has been making efforts to building a stronger economy, and at the same time overlooked the moral education. People are so misguided by the government that they take for granted the morality certainly comes secondary to making MONEY.

Todd, I was able to visit Laos two weeks ago and I have to agree with you on Chinese people. They are so rude and they get away with it. We had a group of Chinese just smoking in the hotel lobby. Now there are good Chinese people then there are the ones that don’t have manners, we had breakfast one morning, there’s this older women trying to cut to the front. The younger Chinese lady behind me tells me no, don’t let her do that.

I have lots of Chinese friends but the Chinese in Laos feel like they own the country. We were in Boten, Laos, a border town. We were shocked when we went to a Chinese grocery store and they would not accept the Laotian Kip. Nope! They would only accept Thai Baht, American dollars or Chinese Yuan. I'm like WTF, this is Laos! Not only that, but the Chinese clerk was extremely rude and wouldn't look at us until we practically got into his face and told him we were ready to check out our groceries.

This is one of the Chinese traditions. Most Chinese were taught at a young age to polite to the people they known. They were taught not to engage with strangers. This is to protect their privacy and avoid danger encounter. When they open up, they feel like they are naked and bad things are awaited to be happened. Just because you are ready to social and open, people don't know you need to welcome you into their life. Putting a smile on the face, does not mean it is safe behind closed door.

I think it's the older Chinese who come from the countryside in China who are rude. It must come from the desperate conditions they lived through during the Mao era when there were so many famines that killed millions of Chinese people, si they feel like they have to push their way through the crowds all the time or they will starve. The young Chinese I worked with in San Francisco are very very nice people. They are very smart and eager to learn through my mentoring.

I was an expat in Singapore, have seen many horrible behaviors from Australian tourists treating local Singaporean like they were a subclass being. One time, I was at Bali for a conference and afterward decided to relax at the beach under the tiki hut, enjoying the ocean. However, 2 Australian couple came by and asked me if I can move to another spot since I was only one person and they prefer my spot as the tiki hut at my spot had better shade coverage for 2. I declined. And the Australian couple proceeded to call the resort service manager, the poor manager keep telling them tiki hut is first come first serve, But there is another area, with bigger tiki hut, but there will be service charge. They 2 couple just went off shouting at the manager how Indonesian just don't under what 'service and customer' mean. The rude Australians eventually left and out of curiosity I talked to the manager as why did they not just comp the Australians the 'service-charge' area, manager told me, that the 2 Australians did the same thing to another couple yesterday. I gave the local police in vientiane a right whack on social media recently due to them singling me out on numerous occasions doing absolutely nothing wrong at all, they just seen me as an easy target, they held me until i paid their askes for, first time was 500k 2nd was only 100k due to me having my partner laos with me, the first time I was alone they pretended to not understand English so they did not have to answer my questions as to why they targeted me out of a whole group of local motorists doing the exact same thing, rightfully, until I paid them so I could just get outta there, then they magical spoke English! Such a great country sadly tarnished by dishonest police you could easily label as thieves!

Was on a biking group tour of Laos last nov/dec for 21 days at end of rainy season. Potholes, horrendous, not so bad on a bike as we can often ride around them, but in 4 wheel pickup must have been very difficult, we changed the nick name to land of a million potholes from million elephants, which seem far and few. But some roads up north had been made almost impossible, our 4x4 back had to pull the mini bus out quite a few times and almost half our group slide over at one time or another, but over all a great trip. We go back again this year. Correct about big trucks they don’t give way to bikes, lost count of times I had to get completely off the road. We went all the way up to Boten, the Chinese/Laos special zone. Weird place.
