Building a new life in southern laos myself, I'm privileged enough to work in an industry whete i can live a FIFO lifestyle, Australia for work then straight out of there once the project I'm working on is wrapped, I'm putting all my eggs into laos, right now the house my partner is building in a province near pakse and later this year I'll be looking to buy more land to build another house on hopefully along the mekong for a holiday destination for family and friends, your spot on! The peace, the quiet and the affordability of a better lifestyle 👌👌👌 And also true! Those who mock and doubt, who have nothing but negativity to say have never left the box they live in! Their loss!

Looking good the kitchen looks nice. My only suggestion would be with the house being that close to the water and having all those windows I would be afraid of all the mosquitoes. I would probably be planting some mosquitoe repellent plants like mint and lavender.

I am repeating myself but want Lao people who would like to return to Lao to know that, if they are still Lao at heart, they should expect no big problems if they come back. I think that adding screens, at least downstairs, would be a worthwhile addition.
Just curious, do they have home improvement stores like Home Depot over there? Or places where you can buy plywood and studs? From an engineering perspective, building or renovating homes in Laos doesn’t seem too complicated, unlike to houses in the States. Looks like you dont need to pull a permit and inspector. With the right power tools and supplies, we could easily cut costs and improve efficiency.
Many farangs are discovering south east Asia is not a “shit hole”. It’s very cheap and interesting to live there. It could be argued that living in a highly regulated and over taxed society is the “real” shit hole. I would not say nyc is shit hole but it is unsafe, unhealthy, unhappy N chaotic.

Yes i was impressed with the cost. it makes me want to move just for that. But until i can afford that... i have to love where i am. I recently moved to a much wooded area in a small town. It finally hit me that when you look out that kitchen window that is Thailand. (another country) I made my first trip out of the states two years ago (Canada). My girlfriend is Lao but we both much rather live in Thailand. (she does own a couple of lots in Lao which will be developed later)
I lived in Lao for 22 years but now prefer Thailand, modern infrastructure, better health services and more lifestyle choices.

Todd. I watched most of your videos since the pandemic. You just lost my respect. I have been back to Laos at least 8 times and I am upset that you titled your vlog ‘To renovate a house in this Shithole/country.’ And you are try to justify that someone else is saying it. You should not even bring this up. You are doing it just to get more views. Shame on you. I had supported and agreed with you when you had haters talking bad about you on many issues including the problem with passing out sweets in Laos. I understand that kids in Laos don’t even have money to buy candy. But this is just a plain insult. Sad. If you have to stoop this low just to get more viewers then that’s pretty pathetic. I am a Lao American and I am proud of Laos. And to have Laos being blasted out by RUclipsrs like so is just not funny and not right. Laos is not a shithole. Laos is a beautiful country filled with wonderful peace loving people. Why can’t that be the title of this vlog. Shame, shame, shame!

Dear Liam, I get that you would take offense at the "shithole" reference, but it seems to me that you are missing the nuance of how Todd is using this. First, he has a line through the word which clearly negates it. His point is that only ignorant people who have never traveled outside their own world would think like that. He is saying quite strongly that Lao is NOT AT ALL a shithole country. He's making a point to OPPOSE that idea. Perhaps you should show this to others (preferably strangers) and ask their take on it. I sincerely think you just misunderstood what Todd was doing. BTW, just for context, I am an American who lived in Laos for a year and agree that life in Laos is much more peaceful and pleasant than the shithole society I currently live in.

@ I understand clearly what Todd was saying and yes I mentioned that Todd said that someone else is saying it instead of him. That I understand; however to title your video in that context is not appropriate. The first thing that people see it the Title, just like the when you first meet someone what do you see first, obviously you don’t see what’s inside of a person. It is an insult. Hi Todd & family & friends Happy New Year. I'm from the states I've followed the renovation on the house I've loved the kitchen and the entrance way staircase... Yes i was impressed with the cost. it makes me want to move just for that. But until i can afford that... i have to love where i am. I recently moved to a much wooded area in a small town. It finally hit me that when you look out that kitchen window that is Thailand. (another country) I made my first trip out of the states two years ago (Canada). Through your channel im learning how to travel I will never call that beautiful place you have lived a %y&7 hole Its a beautiful country & people.
