If companies think they can start replacing jobs en masse with AI-powered automated solutions, they should also prepare themselves for a massive revival of unionization and worker rights. Last year was only the opening act, with actors and writers on the front lines (due to their industries already being so union-oriented) against corporate greed related to AI. But 2023 was a season of strikes and worker organization elsewhere too (examples throughout multiple industries including auto, shipping, teaching, healthcare, etc), and if 2024 brings cuts to a workforce that are obviously intended to be replaced by automation, I do think there's the chance we are entering a historic worker's rights period, similar to the early 20th century. These corporations are playing with a certain type of fire that won't be easily contained. Sadly, I think their greed makes this scenario inevitable.
You ever stop and think why smart people in high demand jobs in america dont want unions..becaus we get paid a lot..if these companies want to fire half their employees some will get left behind and others will work harder, gain the skills they want from us and continue thriving..unions are for no skill jobs..low barrier to entry jobs, because without the union wages would be nothing
Unfortunately your view is distorted. AI would allow companies to work more efficiently. AI still has to produce consistent, reliable, trusted results. I believe AI can but it is still years away depending on the complexity of the tasks. You will Not be able to stop AI. Just like when computers, robotics, automation helped increase efficiency, perform repetitive tasks, and reduced employees needed for mundane tasks that can be completed with incredible efficiently by machine today. Human jobs would shift some to other areas but People whose jobs can Easily be replaced by AI should prepare by learning skills still needed in the future
Not even close. The same argument was made when manufacturing in the 80s-90s was offshored, with many in emerging tech industires sneering about Union workers who got their hands dirty and seeking to hold on to their jobs. The union backlash never materialized in manufacturing. Welcome to the real world tech workers. You're a cog in a machine..replaceable, anonymous, powerless and one day easily replaced by a newer, more shiny cog. Your CEO may wear a T-Shirt, but he's cut from the same cloth of the old style robber barons.
Since google deleted my first long ass comment ill write a short one..my job is a high skill, high barrier to entry job..if tech companies want to lay people off o will work harder and learn more skills to differentiate myself. Why? Because i get paid a lot..i know its against union policy to work hard but there is still enough like minded people like me who want to be the best at our job and compensated as such to keep unionizing to low skill jobs where it deserves to be
All that they said is speculation that AI is replacing these layoffs. AI is up and running, its still in development phase, and it might have some impact on replacing jobs, but it will be regulated. Some of these reporters/analysts have to be careful as to what they say without knowledge and supporting evidence. Layoffs are layoffs and it happens, but for them to say it might be AI related is just incorrect reporting.
It really is. She starts off by giving two valid reasons and then completely goes off on a tangent to speculation that they feel will get more clicks. Absolutely careless.
What people don't realize is that Silicon Valley companies tend to do strategic layoffs Google & Meta both closed down non-strategic projects / groups / products and that's what they do first. They tend not to do willy nilly layoffs in a reactionary way. They also do layoffs way ahead of time. It was always pretty clear that the metaverse was a dud, and closing AR hardware projects is not a surprise.
All these companies have to do is announce layoffs and their stock goes up, making the morbidly rich stockholders even richer -- at the expense of working people's livelihoods. It's a sick game they play.
Remember when these tech companies said that automation will create more jobs than they displace and replace? Why is anyone listening to the CEO's of these tech companies? Just because they run a company of smart people doesn't mean they are smart!
Remember NAFTA and All the Jobs it OUTSOURCED to MEXICO? NAFTA was Sold to the American People as it will Create more jobs than it displaces LIES. US Companies Leaving in Droves for Mexico and South America for Cheap Labor Audi Auto Workers in Mexico Now on Strike for Higher Pay. Sound Familiar ?
This is Y2K all over again, in that the general news media doesn't understand technology, but that won't stop them from talking about it and feeding their own panic.
I think it's closer to the housing crunch. It's not a specific date of doomsday, there's no prepper out there doing inane things to 'be ready for' it. It's a complete sea change that will (seemingly) slowly take over a once reliable financial resource and remove a way of life from the average citizen's expectations. There's no illusion of agency here. Also, Y2k threatened conveniences, not just employment. If anything, Y2k happening would have increased employment as systems would not be available to assist. I don't think you went through Y2k. I don't think you're sincere. In the terms of a century, it will happen quickly but our masters are unassailable, inhuman corporate monsters who will do nothing but hold up their hands as they praise the gods of profitability.
@@vectoralphaSec I agree that the panic is real, but that doesn’t mean it’s right. Layoffs are happening but not because of AI. If AI has any connection to the layoffs it’s that tech companies invested too much into AI thinking it was going to take off and now they have to pivot. AI isn’t anywhere close to what human intelligence can do, but it does have very specific applications, like guiding missiles, anti-fraud tools, mathematical forecasting, all of which create jobs not take them away. This generalized idea that AI is coming around to take jobs is a stupid, stupid, fear mongering thing that the news came up with and that people eat up every single time. No serious AI researcher is claiming that AI (which isn’t even a unified kind of technology) is capable of doing everyday human jobs.
AI will never replace humans because humans that go hungry will revolt and destroy machines. No powerful corporation can stop that. And politicians at the end of the day need people to feel they're in power. People have been talking about robots taking over jobs since 1900, yet here we are with more people in the world than ever before.
We're gonna soon be in a future where we not only distrust media, we completely ignore it. These anchors are next. They are already speaking from an AI script hlf the time.
Well if all these companies erase human workers but expect humans to buy and subscribe to their services- with what money will humans do that with? The weak penance of UBI welfare? So again I say…companies must remember their relationship with the world is symbiotic. Companies need people for revenue and people need companies for jobs to live and earn enough money to cover the basics of food, housing and transportation while having extra to pay companies for their products and services. If companies continue to cheat this unspoken deal then they’ll ultimately fail and nobody will have anything.
The economy could still function but with a bigger wealth disparity. Companies are at no risk when reducing human workers. In fact, those which become uncompetitive will fail.
Same here. When I was in university a friend of mine switched from mechanical engineering to software engineering. He was so smug about it, claiming that software is far more "cutting edge" and that he'll always have a job in the future. I don't blame him at all though - back in 2018 that is the way everyone was talking. Anyways, this friend of mine has just been let go from a big tech company. It is fascinating how quickly things can change in that industry.
It seems like AI is a catch-22 for the economy. Either it is all hype and won't be "transformative" like wall street says or it will cannibalize consumption for the sake of margins.
AI! We dont need you anymore! Imagine all jobs overnight were replaced NOT ALL OF COURSE YET LIKE TECHNICAL. But imagine fast foods, best buy/ hardware stores all became AI. You pay in advance go scan QR code and then pick up your items. Millions of jobs lost. Scary times. Lots of ppl wont have anything to do. Many man will go to trade and business will go under due to competition. Upside down times for sure
@eugenefirebird8938 2.3 seconds from ChatGPT Title: "Beyond the Yesterday Sky" (Verse 1) In the meadow where the sunbeams play, Where the clouds dance in the sky so grey, There's a whisper from the wind so shy, Singing softly, "Beyond the Yesterday Sky." (Chorus) Oh, beyond the yesterday sky, Dreams are sailing, oh, so high. In the land where our hopes don't die, We'll be flying, beyond the yesterday sky. (Verse 2) Through the streets of memories we roam, Past the shadows where our thoughts have flown. With a melody that never lies, We're still searching for the why's. (Chorus) Oh, beyond the yesterday sky, Love is waiting, don't you cry. In a song that never says goodbye, We're still trying, beyond the yesterday sky. (Bridge) In the hush of a starlit night, Underneath the moon's gentle light, There's a feeling, oh, so right, As we wander, lost in time's flight. (Verse 3) Through the echoes of the days gone by, In the glimmer of the morning's eye, There's a promise in the air so sly, Whispering, "Beyond the Yesterday Sky." (Chorus) Oh, beyond the yesterday sky, Where our spirits dare to fly. In the heart where the truth won't lie, Keep on seeking, beyond the yesterday sky. (Outro) As we wander where the eagles soar, With our dreams, who could ask for more? In the beat of the love we ply, We'll keep singing, beyond the yesterday sky.

you mean don't stop learning. New techs come out everyday. If you are the expert on mid-2000 techs and that is it? Then it is you that cause your own layoff.
Less work for engineers because all these tech companies need less employees with AI. They decide when and who to hire and they dont want to right now so massive layoffs and hiring freezes coming in 2024 in the tech industry. Further advancement in AI will make this go faster.

AI hype have the same vibe as self driving cars, I don't think it's ready yet for at least 5 to 10 years.
TAKE A LOOK AT A 1960"S MOVIE NAME COLOSSUS !!! MOVIE ABOUT A COMPUTER THATS DECIDED TO TALK TO RUSSIAN COMPUTER AN TOOK OVER MANKIND WITH EYE IN THE SKY TECHNICALLY AN ABLE TO ZAP A HUMAN INTO GONE !!!!! JUST THINK THIS TECHNOLOGY WAS ALREADY PROBABLY BUILT JUST WAITING FOR THE BIDEN AN HARRIS ADMINISTRATION TYPE OF THUG DEEP STATE ANTICHRIST GOVERNMENT SATANISTS DEMOCRATIC PARTY TOO PUT INTO ACTION
10 years is about right. 90 percent of Americans are against AI taking our jobs. So govt better do something or we gonna have 2/3 of the country creating civil war. Dems and Reps better get their private army if they wanna go that route.
Why? Because i get paid a lot..i know its against union policy to work hard but there is still enough like minded people like me who want to be the best at our job and compensated as such to keep unionizing to low skill jobs where it deserves to be
Think they are putting their trust in AI too much too early. There a few years of AI maturity needed at minimum
They’re confusing “shifting priorities to focus on AI” with “people replaced by AI”.
Screw them. They don’t care
All these companies have to do is announce layoffs and their stock goes up, making the morbidly rich stockholders even richer -- at the expense of working people's livelihoods. It's a sick game they play.
People should just leave tech and move to other industries while they still can before AI leads to layoffs there too.
US Companies Leaving in Droves for Mexico and South America for Cheap Labor
Audi Auto Workers in Mexico Now on Strike for Higher Pay. Sound Familiar ?
Meanwhile, Google CEO is getting paid a billion dollars
But the panic is real. These companies ARE laying off employees. And people ARE losing their jobs.
Love this. I am Chinese living in Kirkland Seattle. I got the email today about the layoff. I have a poodle dog though.
Love the new AI boogie man. They know that AI doesn't have the ability to replace workers but people hear the word and accept their fate. Get real.
Nope, it can and it is scary.
AI will never replace humans because humans that go hungry will revolt and destroy machines. No powerful corporation can stop that. And politicians at the end of the day need people to feel they're in power.
People have been talking about robots taking over jobs since 1900, yet here we are with more people in the world than ever before.
This round of layoff was only small compare to what is coming .
We're gonna soon be in a future where we not only distrust media, we completely ignore it. These anchors are next. They are already speaking from an AI script hlf the time.
This is nothing. Tech companies will continue to layoff people. That’s going to be a common trend in next coming years.
Google is a monopoly and can do as it pleases
Me being Mechanical engineer with a stable job, watching the news and appreciating my career choices😃
@@RC-rg3vz The Luddites said the same.

Title: "Beyond the Yesterday Sky"
(Verse 1)
In the meadow where the sunbeams play,
Where the clouds dance in the sky so grey,
There's a whisper from the wind so shy,
Singing softly, "Beyond the Yesterday Sky."
(Chorus)
Oh, beyond the yesterday sky,
Dreams are sailing, oh, so high.
In the land where our hopes don't die,
We'll be flying, beyond the yesterday sky.
(Verse 2)
Through the streets of memories we roam,
Past the shadows where our thoughts have flown.
With a melody that never lies,
We're still searching for the why's.
(Chorus)
Oh, beyond the yesterday sky,
Love is waiting, don't you cry.
In a song that never says goodbye,
We're still trying, beyond the yesterday sky.
(Bridge)
In the hush of a starlit night,
Underneath the moon's gentle light,
There's a feeling, oh, so right,
As we wander, lost in time's flight.
(Verse 3)
Through the echoes of the days gone by,
In the glimmer of the morning's eye,
There's a promise in the air so sly,
Whispering, "Beyond the Yesterday Sky."
(Chorus)
Oh, beyond the yesterday sky,
Where our spirits dare to fly.
In the heart where the truth won't lie,
Keep on seeking, beyond the yesterday sky.
(Outro)
As we wander where the eagles soar,
With our dreams, who could ask for more?
In the beat of the love we ply,
We'll keep singing, beyond the yesterday sky.
My co-worker son inlaw work in AI at Google, he said customers are not happy with Google'sAI so they goign back to the old rule based system.
Wrong. Not replaced bt gen ai. So dumb
I get the impression tech companies are claiming AI as a way to ease the public perception of hard times are coming for these tech giants. Looks a lot better to say "we expect to automate this labor" rather than "we can't afford it."
Swayed narrative. AI has nothing to do with the layoffs - IT’S THE ECONOMY
No, it’s AI.
Firing does not have to do with productuvity gkn from AI. To be honest it is more on the macro economic conditions and cost cutting. Pinning it on AI is just a justification measure for them
Its just a seasonal slowdown also attributed to too much pandemic hiring. It will be OK
Good reporting, the only things bothering me is why they are smiling so bad delivering these news.
Probably because they're still employed themselves and making good money.
They just imagine those pudgy geeks who are not human to them.
Because They Enjoy Watching People Struggle.
Yeah baby! Way to go Google! A lean, mean non-human dependent AI machine! Thanks for contributing to the culture of unemployed techies!
Could it be because they overhired and resetting?
Its almost like the average consumer can't afford things like they used to anymore, and greedy companies are feeling it.
Don't go into engineering unless you want to work at twenty different companies in your career
They ruined engineering with H1B imports.
It pays well
you mean don't stop learning. New techs come out everyday. If you are the expert on mid-2000 techs and that is it? Then it is you that cause your own layoff.
not all big tech layoffs are in eng departments - these were in sales and marketing
trade instability for high pay - invest well and retire early
This happens a lot to companies that require lots of employees and win/lose contracts.
This is only the beginning, god bless America
And yet Jam Creamer gets to keep his job. What an upside-down world we live in!
This isn’t about AI , these companies are all laying off whenever possible . it’s an unhealthy economy . period .
The good times in big tech are really over.
OpenAI will do to Google what Google did to Yahoo!
Surely non of the DEI crew, "fact checkers," or political attack dog contingent will be laid off.
Of Course Not Diversity Equity and Inclusion Adds ZERO Value to the Bottom Line.
Extremely rich companies laying off people for A.I. is a horrible idea.
America just full of lies and games. I’m exhausted 😩
ALL LIES. The "American Dream" is a LIE. ZERO Opportunities for POOR People and Middle Class People.
AI will replace news reporters too very soon
If the tech guys are losing jobs, what does that say about the rest of jobs?? That's scary.
Exactly. When Six Figure Careers are Eliminated and REPLACED BY MINIMUM WAGE MCDONALDS JOBS AND WALMART GREETER JOBS
Layoffs are good for stocks prices and especially when Bitcoin goes AI.
= zero value.
How does AI relate to bitcoin? Bitcoin is a payment network.
days are ont so far that news reporters are no longer needed
A company worth a Trillion dollars lays people off? 🤔
Laying off hundrdes of people when you have 200k employees is basically a rounding error.
Hurricanes start with a few sprinkles too.
Google pays it's bills from fake Fed propped stock value. They have no tangible product.
@@peachmango5347 They end with them too.
Sprinkles also start and end with sprinkles 🤷♂️
Not for those employees who are now unemployed
lol remember all those tech workers on social media with their day at work videos where they do nothing but take naps, eat and play games?
I believe you’re thinking of a video about a recruiter at a tech company. Recruiters are essentially telemarketers.
Less work for engineers because all these tech companies need less employees with AI. They decide when and who to hire and they dont want to right now so massive layoffs and hiring freezes coming in 2024 in the tech industry. Further advancement in AI will make this go faster.
This has nothing to do with AI. This is the result of Fed over tightening.
And overhiring during the lockdown when people used the internet more. But companies like layoffs, as people work harder if they are afraid of getting laid off, and have a mortgage to pay.

A robot can replace all those jobs
Car mechanics will be replaced by china. You'll just throw away your car when it brakes, just like you throw away your shoes, tv, laptop, etc.
Well I’m still waiting for AI reading me news.
hopefully it is the department that is working on blocking my ad blockers. 🤣
There's constant employee turnover in all these companies, i'm wondering if their business is even sustainable. If you have to layoff and re-hire every 2-3 quarters there's some problem...
They tell you the humanities is a waste of time get into tech and got payed off 😑
All those AR engineers now apple can grab
Geez thanks for the advice cnbc
Wonder what the beginning of the end looks like?
its more about the HB1 visa cycle...they need to 'fire' and rehire by law. also makes rehiring look good for job market in ne bs political cycle...seen it over and over before nothing new. media doing its thing to get air time news cycle

When have Republicans been pro worker???
What does Biden have to do with Google laying off people (private company-capitalism you know) and anything having to do with AI?
Don’t forget those AI generated news casters…
The reason for the big tech layoffs have been the same all along, AI.

SIMP. She's Nothing Special to Look at.
Redundancy is quite ramapant in most of IT infrastructure, used to be a necessity...

Outsourcing for cost saving is the real reason
one step closer to full skynet
Time to retrain. We need giod mechanics, electricians, amd plumbers. Tech people can handle those jobs.
i love that i can hum to search a song on google with mic on my phone. for whoever design that thank you so much.🧡🧡

Go to a 4 year learning institute, study lessons, practice theories, prepare and take exams, and simultaneously collect student loans debt, this followed by prepping for job interviews, cover letters, resumes, video presentations, networking, and the list goes on, and at the end of it all a little voice that speaks loudly at so many tech companies:
Your services are no longer needed, and $50 severance pay is in the mail!
