I know earth tones aren’t your thing...but those are lovely earth tones mixed from that set. I have the high chroma set, but use it to augment their introductory set which has the clear blues (phthalo and ultramarine) you need to get some of the mixes you’re looking for. Their Quin Magenta is my favorite “cool red” for a split primary palette.
That tin makes an amazing travel palette! I was able to fit 42 (!) half pans in there with ease, and the wells in the lid make perfect mixing areas. I almost wanted to buy another set just for the tin :).
I have this set as well, it was my first set of professional watercolors. I quickly added a medium yellow and a warm blue to the palette to give me better mixing potential. I still use the Cobalt Teal, Dioxazine Violet, Quin Magenta and Green Gold in my main palette. The Quin Gold is nice but I don't reach for it much, and I find that the Transparent Pyrrole Orange is not very useful for me, as it has a brown undertone that doesn't work well for floral painting. I'm overall very glad to have started with this set, because I enjoy working with Qor paints, and I otherwise probably would never have learned to love PY129 as much as I do.
This set is gorgeous :D
The almost-black dioxazine purple gives me life. And there's a teal and a magenta XD
I have this set and love it. I pretty much love anything mixed with the cobalt teal between the granulation and the brightness of it, just so pretty :)
I have to say i think this set is a good landscape set as it has a lot of earth colours and would be great for a limited palette x
the full strength look like they would be awesome for landscapes. Especially Fall landscapes.
I was thinking that exact same thing! Even some spring florals would be gorgeous with the full strength mixes. And I love those various browns from the green gold mixes - so clean and not muddy. The three browns in the middle of the bottom row would be fine substitutes for siennas and umbers. You really could do a lot with these six colors.
Man, it looks spring and autumn with those mixes
Qor colors are mind blowing! I LOVED YOU FOR DEMONSTRATING THE VIBRANT PASTELS which result from adding dilution. Tks for your intelligent comments! I have been looking for a set of pastels, but can only find ones which are opaque. Bless your heart
Thanks much!
I'm sold... I love all of the color combinations! The pastels are so lovely. Thanks so much for this video because I was on the fence about buying them.
I actually like the green gold mixes. What an interesting way to mix bright browns! I'm also in love with QoR's Quin Gold. I own this one at home, it's strong, earthy-orange-y, and mixes nicely with ultramarine for sap green.
Lovely work, Oto, as always! My thought is that context, and general subject choices, matter a great deal in choosing a palette, because my reaction was so different from yours 🤩🤩. I live in the Southern California desert - and the dark mixes look luscious for landscapes as well as still life work with local flora and fauna. I’m making notes of the high chroma pigments to see what I can do to recreate the palette from my existing paints. Thank you for sharing your explorations with us! 🎨🖌😍
I just bought this set and was so happy to find your review if them. I can't wait to dive in and play with them myself.
Thanks Oto. I love the transparent orange. It's in my permanent pallet. The others I just use on their own. They do make lovely pastels and the flow medium makes interesting patterns. Useful depending on what type of effect you ate going for.😁💖
I started my QoR collection with this set and the 6 color intro set. The 12 color intro set includes all of these colors except orange and my plan had been to get that set plus orange but the store I went to was out of orange. The green gold IMHO is the best green gold of any brand I have. I do think think QoR makes for a technical challenge in the way the colors like to take off across the page, but that can also be fun and they really take off on Bee paper.
Hi there
Which set would you recommend to someone that could only afford to get one? And they're a beginner
@@hmmmnope2455 If it has to be QoR the intro set, but QoR isn’t a great beginner brand IMHO and that set isn’t a great beginner set. For high quality and affordable I would suggest DaVinci from their website - either of the Joyce sets, the small Denise wildlife set if it happens to suite what you want to paint, or the “artist” set. If you can spend a little more I think the Earth Friendly set is a great set.
I love the earthy tones... all the green gold mixes...
When I got this set I really didn’t like it until I used it diluted then I enjoyed the colors so much more so I’m really happy to hear someone else say that too! My fav was the Quin gold it just is such a pretty sunny yellow diluted!
I agree that the pale colors are lovely 🎉
When I buy a brand of professional watercolors, I buy the entire set. I do not like mixing my watercolors together to get another color.. Several professional watercolor artists have stated that as soon as you combine two colors together to get another color, you are taking away from the transparency of the original color. So I prefer to keep my watercolors as pure as possible. Even though I know that blue with yellow will make green, I prefer buying different colors of green, etc. Yes, I know that my way is expensive, but I still prefer to keep each color pure. These colors as a swatch are very pretty and I actually have a few colors of this brand. I am waiting for Christmas in the hopes that I can buy as large a set as possible or buy them all individually. Thank you for displaying these beautiful, vibrant colors.
I love the pastel colours! And I'm surprised at how well the quin. gold mixed. Thanks for the review!
I was just looking at the colours as a set earlier this morning, and I'll be trying it out this afternoon. I just started with the 24 tube set of QoR colours this week and found your videos to get ideas on what to do with them (I've used acrylics for over 50 years). Thank you so much!
Doreen McRae the 24 set is lots of fun! I love playing with my QoR paints. Close tie between QoR and M.Graham as my favorite brand.
I love the different colors you can get with this palette. I have a couple of Qor paints. It would be nice to get more eventually.
So pretty! I love your swatches and the color chart.
I always wanted this set but now I'm not so sure. I like a limited palette while painting and because this didn't have a good mixing yellow I didn't buy. However, I use all of these colors in my palettes except the orange. Now I know I can purchase this set and just add in a good mixing yellow. I just love Cobalt Teal. The granulation and separation is just beautiful. TFS.
I love this set!!! It was one of my first watercolors ❤️ thank you for sharing
I personally really like the bottom row of mixes a lot lol 😂 those browns for my are really beautiful and I think would be useful. And those pale washes are definitely amazing! The glow is-
out of interest Oto what 12 Qor colour would you choose for a mixing palette ? It would be very helpful if you could do a video on this as you have so much knowledge and array of Qor paints ? 🙂
That green gold color is my favorite color that ever existed.
I LOVE how VIBRANT that is. LOVE LOVE LOVE.
I don't have this set, but those colors are gorgeous and I'm going to order it for myself.
Well analysed 👍🏻
I would have to strongly disagree with the assessment that the colors created by this set are ugly. As someone who paints plein air in California, and prefers to mix warm neutrals found in this landscape, this set is great. The quinacridone colors and green gold make wonderful yellowish and reddish browns, and cobalt teal and green gold make that elusive soft blue green of poppy leaves and pale succulents. I wouldn't want to limit myself to this palette, but this set creates colors that aren't achievable with the classic warm and cool reds, blues and yellows.
Hi Ilah, that's totally awesome :D It's wonderful that we all have different tastes and colors we like to work with. I try to always mention that I'm only saying my own opinion about what colors I do like and what works for me, but also mention that others might be looking for something different. Maybe I forgot to say that in this particular video.
This is a great palette for skin tones. 🤷🏻♀️ and I disagree. Even the dark mixes are lovely.
Thanks. You just saved me some money. I don't think this set is a good fit for my watercolor style.
