I really appreciated Renee's response. She had her one foot up and quickly got in down on the ground, like she was setting ready to take action. Standing between Drew and the stan and guiding her out with her arm around her. Her decisiveness and protectiveness are a credit to her.
As a neurobiologist, the fawn response isn’t primary as you say. I agree that it’s a learned response! However, when highly conditioned from previous experience, that response can be just as fast as fight or flight. The “software” encoding the fawning response. It is similar to the seemingly automatic triggering response of PTSD trauma to evoke sets of emotions when a similar environment cues it.

Cog neuro baby researcher and psychology 4th year here, and that makes sense. It would be interesting to know if it is as fast in terms of observable behaviour vs on the scale we can measure via EEG but at the same time, evoking those states is horrible for participants and that’s a key factor. Have you seen any studies?
@@TazTom some research using EEG uses movies to induce stress which is cool in certain settings but I don’t think it would trigger a fawn response. I mean to measure how fast it kicks in first we need to find people who actually fawn as a response to being with and even that is a challenge lol.

@@TheBehavioralArts I have too many research ideas and not enough lifetime, however I am doing research for fear and stress states in public bathrooms across genders using a VR-EEG paradigm. A similar set up could work with this, but finding participants would be tricky and would need to be handled with sensitivity.

The finger pointing lesson you gave us is exactly why flight attendants point with 2 fingers. I was a flight attendant 20 years ago and during training they said not to point with one finger bc it makes people not want to pay attention to you and during our pre flight presentation it’s super important for people to hear what your saying and pay attention to you. So that’s why we point with 2 fingers 🥳 it was so cool hearing you say that, it’s been so long since I’ve thought about that 😍

When I was studying for a teaching degree they suggested using an open hand, palm showing because it is generally seen as a passive nonthreatening gesture.
@@korie4198 yep. Palm displays are usually very non threatening which is why when we want to show we’re not a threat we often out our hands up and display the palms, it’s also the reason as a magician/mentalist I do this alot, to show that there’s nothing hidden or deceitful… yet 😜
Drew Barrymore’s facial expression of polite greeting is amazing…it always reminds me of then she sees E.T. It is really amazing how you can still see that “innate” if you will, innocent surprise still in her face. Really cool…I feel old.
A lot of celebrities have to learn to react like the "fawn" version after the initial responses out of habit because of constantly having to be aware that you're under a microscope or that your responses often come under scrutiny. So behaving that way often helps when you're still not sure if there's an actual threat also trying not to come off as an awful person if it happens to be a misunderstanding or more often there's a single picture of you in page 6 or wherever with your expression and a headline that unfairly describes the situation for click bait etc.
Jelly Roll reminds me of how our pastor speaks/delivers his sermons. It does hit you on an emotional level.
Literally just turned 40 three weeks ago. I needed this. Seriously. I don’t listen to country music so I didn’t watch the show but I’m so glad I had the chance to see this. I needed it. I don’t care about the number - I had my first baby at 24 so I’ve felt old for awhile lol - but because of issues with anxiety and depression, I didn’t end up finishing college and got pregnant before I could earn my degree. It can oftentimes feel too late. I know 40 isn’t dead, it isn’t the end, but youth is definitely starting to wane. And it’s disheartening. And scary. I needed this. A solid reminder that it ain’t over til it’s over. ❤

It's something you want to achieve, so go for it, I was 45 when I got my HNC and in the same year I found out I was dyslexic, so I was ecstatic when I passed, even though it took me a while, I finally proved my teachers wrong... oh and I'm still learning new skills at 59 😂 .... ❤

I had working knees but life was more chaotic.

Regarding the discussion of the sad face when you're not sad, I want to suggest that it is the face of vulnerability and openness. As an empathic person, I get cranked open regularly seeing someone be kind or generous or emotional. Jelly Roll was up on stage being so open and vulnerable, all our mirror neurons were firing like crazy. Seeing a cute cat or a beautiful sunset, you are suddenly vulnerable and open. I'd like to think this is us at our best at being human.

I've seen this Drew video and love how the other actress is immediately like uh no and gets up to block his access to Drew. I've also gone down a Drew Show rabbit hole (probably cuz I watched your video of her apology) and love it, her interviews are very interesting and I love seeing her just being able to be her.
That thing about sadness in joyful moments makes perfect sense. That's why people with trauma can collapse in tears when the moment comes. I think it feels like "home". Basic, safe. Then the body can safely let the pain go.
I did not consciously catch the facial expressions of contempt but I felt that she expressed a who the heck are you when leaning towards that person. Great catch.
I totally agree about Fawn being a time-buyer. It puts the situation into a holding position until a door appears to really flee, maybe as long as hours away.
It is stressful, esp if it goes on for years. PTSD could result from this kind of interaction, esp if over years. Like childhood or marriage....

Having just come back to performing at 39yo and just turned 40 a couple of weeks ago, the speech made me cry. The performance community here in Toowoomba, Queensland has been super supportive and tell me all the time that my age means nothing and that I absolutely can be a performer. Because my own journey is similar and that might be why I’m connecting so hard. I wonder is some of the sadness is about how much that was difficult and painful needed to be overcome to get there. I do get conscious flashes of those dark moments in moments of extreme joy. (Oh, an emotive let down now it’s safe sounds on point, typed before this bit initially)
I am recovering from a 4 day cognitive neuroscience conference, first time presenting, and I there was a fair amount of facial affective research presented that I saw too. So, I am a bit fatigued but also finding this very interesting.

I see physical blocking when Rene puts herself between Drew and the intruder and i interpret that as a fight response from Rene. Good for her quickly acting and removing Drew from a bad situation.
Fight was definitely ready to go.

Jelly roll has come a long way. His speeches are always emotional. Growing up in TN in small town, is hard. Jelly roll came from the bottom. His small shows were always great and fun, but seeing him now and gaining such a bigger audience is so emotional and couldn't be so more deserving of such an awesome person.
Tears have different patterns when shed with different emotions. So tears of joy look differently than tears sadness.
For the fear-vs-surprise comparison, I would argue that you're always seeing a combination of both, hence why they are so similar. You can have a high fear-low surprise, and high surprise-low fear, but I can't think of a single time when I've only felt one but not the other.

My thoughts on Jelly's face of sadness... i find that in my happiest/life changing moments.. there is a split second when i am truly sad... sad for the girl that had to suffer before getting here, sadness that the ones i have lost are not here to share my accomplishment, and sometimes it is just such an overwhelming rush of emotions

I got the look of contempt from Renée immediately! When she stood up, I feel like she quickly realized something was wrong and that she needed to get Drew out of the situation. She was surprised and confused for a moment but she quickly realized this man had potentially bad intentions. Drew was surprised and then I feel like she was maybe in shock a little bit seeing this man approaching her. Not necessarily fearful or contemptuous, just almost deer in headlights. I dont mean to brag or anything, I just got excited that I correctly picked up on the contempt from Renée lol

Having a stalker is absolutely terrifying, and celebs pretty much have to deal with this on a daily basis. Drew definitely went into fawn mode to calm things down immediately. Awful stuff.
I had a stalker for two years as a teen and I absolutely had "fawn" after a few interactions with him when I was on my own, trying to keep him calm. I didn't even know I was doing it until now thinking back on it. But it felt instinctive in the moment. Even my last interactions with him went from "flight" to "fawn", when he turned up the same class in college. He confronted me after class when I was trying to get away but just to tell me he was engaged and would drop out of the college class so I wouldn't be uncomfortable. I never saw him again.
I'm stalked constantly by an immediate neighbour with extensive evidence to prove it including verbal and written admissions and it's horrific and permanently violating especially because serices who say they are skilled in this area of criminal behaviour, actually aren't thus making the victims life immeasurably worse with catastrophic effects. Celeb or not; people are people and the obsessive and fixated nature and behaviours of a stalker is not a mindset many can comprehend/get their heads around because they fixate and obsess about things you would never even think someone would or could bother with.
This is the first time I got them ALL ! Surprise, confusion, contempt from the guest, freeze from both, flight from guest, fawn from Drew. 😃

I recently went through a similar experience where I started to cry like a baby in an extremely happy moment. Now I understand why, and it blows my mind. At first, It looked like Drew was surprised and happy to engage with a fan. Then a bit confused as she realized what was happening. René, looked concerned, and then rapidly afraid, when she heard his name.
With Jelly Roll, he is a very good example of someone who is Faithful, as opposed to someone who is Religious. As an atheist, I can vibe with faithful people all day long. My faith was very important to me when I was a believer. It was hard for me, even then, to get into a close relationship with someone who was very religious. The strictness of their thought was hard to overcome, sometimes.

Excellent point on "Fawn." it is absolutely a "learned" response. I learned it as a kid, and remember it clearly. I used the old fable of Androcles and the Lion, and approached the bully(s) with figuring out how to de-escalate and address "what's really bothering you?" (I even used the logic of "you've done this so many times, and still feel the same way, so obviously it doesn't work. Let's see if we can figure out what will work?")

On the topic of fawn response: From my experience, people do fawn response when they know they or someone else might get hurt if they do something like running or fighting. I have an uncle who never got diagnosed for decades due to his parents refusing to see the professionals after a chiropractor worsened his condition. He would get extremely violent spontaneously and when I was around 5 or 6, uncle's parents dropped him and his 2 younger sisters (my aunts) at my grandparents for few hours. I was doing my homework and suddenly I got punched so hard on my back that my ribs literally made cracking sound and I couldn’t breath for a while. When I turned around after coming to my senses my uncle who was 6"2 standing there with his knuckles raised. I still remember the feeling too scared to even make a peep. His youngest sister ran towards me and stood before me meanwhile the middle sister started to fight him. Youngest sister then stepped in to say things like "oh brother were you hungry? I will give you my candy" things like that because the middle sister was nowhere near to be able to make the 6"2 giant stop. Things got scarier and the youngest sister took me outside to hide near the elevator and the middle sister kept fighting to stop him from going after us (my god my aunts are my angels). After quite some time my mom stepped out of the elevator to take me home and she was surprised to see me and my youngest aunt, thankfully stopping my uncle's shenanigans. Since that day I learned to "fawn" over him whenever there was a family gathering so that I wouldn't get hurt. I would never trust my younger relatives or my child with him even if he is not aware.
I am from a mid western state, not necessarily a huge fan of JellyRoll but respect hes a top country artist and like a few of his songs. That being said i share a different faith than Christianity. I was not offended in any way shape or form when i watched his speech. I honestly felt pumped, encouraged, pushed in a positive way to keep truckin towards my dreams. JellyRoll is just an average guy (with an internet sensational wife) who worked really hard on his own and he can contributed that success to anyone he wishes IMO
Did you know at Disney, when you ask a member of staff where something is or which way to go they will direct you using two fingers, they are not allowed to point with one finger as its deemed rude. 😊 great video btw, as always...❤

@LindaC616 Yes, I saw that 😊 I wonder if its a combination of the two, ie; people generally tend to have a negative reaction to being pointed at with one finger, and also think it's rude? What I noticed about the way Jerry Roll pointed though, was that he had his finger and thumb together in a pointed motion, rather than just a single finger...which I thought was cute 😍

As for Jelly's final emotion, I think you described it in your discussion of building up and fighting through something that, but didn't mention (apologies if I missed it) when you know you are through or past it, the response is relief. I did see the contempt you were talking about except I saw it before your marker. I saw it at 2:32. She was going into that head turn with the one sided upturn already. It is so quick that I couldn't figure out how I knew it before that so I had to go back to study where it hit me. So that was two times that were really quick.

I see fawn as a subcategory of freeze. In my experience, absolute “freezing” can be too noticeable, so it’s a way to blend in and not trigger a dangerous reaction.

Something that will get an amen which he effectively did. It seemed more like a learned behavior from church that does really come across with passion and therefore sadness in the face. I am a childhood abuse survivor that freezes and placates. I believe that's what Drew was doing. I don't think she would have left the stage if she was alone. She only left because Rene got up and moved toward her. In my experience fight or flight has to be learned in certain situations.
Freeze, flight, fight - people get it wrong and backwards. I think you're right she would've froze first as it's human instinct. I'm so sorry you went through that as a child, it is horrendously difficult to move on from. ❤ best wishes

Oh I could be a study subject for tears of joy because I do it all the time!! I was once at a soccer game and saw my 6 year old niece score a goal. I had to put my sunglasses on because it took everything in me not to burst into tears. Why?!? Haha and also, I bawled my eyes out at a Seaworld show a couple years ago. Something about the music and the beauty of it…and watching my son and husband react to the show. I was seriously crying my eyes out. Why and what is that??

I don't have anything to say about analysis for Drew Barrymore, or Jelly Roll, because your analysis, Spidey, is always so great, and for the most part, what I was thinking myself.
That said, however, I do want to talk about my first experience with Jelly Roll. I was following my guy Iam Tongi on AI, and saw Jelly Roll's performance there. I've never heard of this artist before, but I was so fascinated with his voice; his passion; and his lyrics that I turned to my kids and ask, "Who is this guy?!" They laughed and repeated his name to me. I was so enamoured with him, that I downloaded his playlist on my music platform, and am now a Jelly Roll fan. I'm always looking for new, unique artist (some artists today can be so redundant, sadly), and I'm happy to have found one in him. I'm not surprised he won for New Artist of the Year. Way to go, Jelly Roll!

I only heard about fawn last year, because of my CPTSD I asked a question on why I do something and that was when I heard about fawn, I feel it's the mind finding the best solution to get out of a situation in the safest way.
Just like when someone thinks or knows they may die, they say their life passes by them but in my opinion it is the mind trying to find a solution it may have used before to safely get out of that situation.

What you said about not letting opinions sound like facts reminded me of some teacher training I did on Friday. One of the presenters was very much sharing her opinions as facts and everybody visibly switched off which was a shame because she probably had some good ideas. Another presenter talked more about what he had found in his research but although he suggested we could learn from this, he didn’t force it as definitely being the same in all situations. He had a much better response from the audience. I didn’t realise at the time but hearing you speak about it makes a lot of sense.
Loved your explanations for why someone might experience sadness or cry in positive situations! Having experienced some of them myself it was fascinating hearing why and it was so accurate!!

Cuteness aggression is one of my favourite psychological phenomenon. It is the urge to squeeze, bite, or pinch something cute like a young animal or a human baby without any desire to cause them harm. In response to positive experiences, some people express their feelings in a dimorphous manner, meaning they show both positive and negative reactions. It is thought to be a mechanism that is supposed to stop your brain from getting overwhelmed by positive feelings, like a kind of emergency brake (for example so that mothers can still be functioning parents and not get incapacitated by the love for their children). I think it's so funny for some reason. 😄

Jellyroll's words were beautiful and for myself I pull a sad face alot because I'm very emotionally sensitive and they're often so intense they're painful (even happy stuff). Drew actually looked like she knew of this man or had had interaction with him in the past probably at other events- which wouldn't be untypical for an obsessed follower. The thing about Drew that is different than Renee is that this is typical Drew response with about all her interactions and no doubt that she has had this interaction with the public through most of her life. She appears used to it, so much so that she is basically relaxed, and they both know that there are bouncers as a relied on buffer between the public and themselves. It adds another dimension to this because if they were just in a private covo at a restaurant or park, they would both be fearing and flying at a whole elevated level.
