I know the movie has a “happy ending” but the second this song started playing, I cried so hard. Studio Ghibli movies are always so heartbreaking, I don’t even know why
Yes! They do. Very well put. They are my go-to place, whenever I feel I am losing who I am (which is difficult to hold on to as I am growing into an adult), I watch Ghibli and it never ceases to inspire me.
This movie made me wished that I have schoolmates as cooperative as the students in this movie.Their hardwork for saving their clubhouse is so awe-inspiring. And when Umi's mother hugged her, I felt Umi's loneliness. That shit made me tear up. The love story in this movie is also lovely. It's a highschool romance. It's simply cute, pure and so innocent. Something that modern romance stories lack nowadays. God I wish I was back in highschool when I watched this film. It's a great story because it gives you so much nostalgic feelings, the same as what I felt when I watched Whisper of the Heart. The movie had a happy ending, but the ending song is so sad, lol
This movie is a studio ghibli classic in my opinion, I remember first picking up this movie from a local store and I remember being really confused from the ending with my simple mind, I wasn’t a fan of the simplicity of it back then but now I love it! when the opening theme came on at the end, the song I haven’t heard for many years, I started to cry... such a beautiful movie sadly I feel it doesn’t get that much attention from the anime community
Although this movie has a completely happy and comforting ending, something provokes our heart at the very end. Tears started to roll down my eyes and I'm not even bothered. Rather the world feels so calm. The little things of our lives, the beauty of getting ahold of something that you want so badly, there's something about it. It's so hard to put it in words. And maybe that's the beauty of it.
Right now, there are people all over the world who are just like you. They're either lonely, they're missing somebody, they're depressed, they're hurt, they're scarred from the past, they're having personal issues no one knows about, they have secrets you wouldn't believe. They wish, they dream and they hope. And right now, they are sitting here reading these words, and I'm writing this for you so you dont feel alone anymore. Always remember, don't be depressed about the past, don't worry about the future, and just focus on today. If today's not so great don't worry! Tomorrow's a new chance. If you are reading this, be sure to share this around to make others feel better. Have a nice day. :) Edit: I found out my sister copy and pasted this from another comment, so technically I didn’t write this. (Sorry about the Plagiarism)
I just dunno, the ending of this anime actually are happy. But why I feel so sad when this song was played through Umi and Shun go back from the ship.. Hiksssss. So heart touching..
I think it's because it's as close to what you can get to a closure from the loss of a loved one. Sayonara to her father, she's moving on, found love :)

This song was written long before the movie, and was on the Japanese music charts in 1976 IIRC. Since the whole movie is set in 1963, it's a nice touch.
I've been listening to a lot of peaceful music, and this is by far the most amazing piece. It instantly took my spirit flying over beautiful oceans and mountains. Thank you for creating this sheer peace itself !!
This is the only Ghibli film that made my cry at the end (yes I know you exist, Grave of the Fireflies, but even you didn't manage that!). And it's because the film ends with Meru and Shun finding the closure they needed with their fathers through their father's friend, and that allows them to move on with their life - Meru, moving on from the grief of losing her father, Shun finally finding out who his father really was (and the captain / father's friend, getting the chance to reunite with his two old friends through their children). It's not the ending of a typical love story where the two leads get together, and that's what makes the movie so much more beautiful that just a romance. The love story is just a catalyst for this need for closure, but it's a beautifully nuanced one that captures both youthful innocence and the sentiment of Japan in the 60s recovering from WW2. Set against the backdrop of Japan hosting the upcoming Olympics, the film uses these two young teens making peace with their fathers' death in war as the embodiment of the Japanese people moving on from the horrors of WW2, and also uses the restoration of the old clubhouse to symbolize Japan as a nation needing to honour and respect the past (esp. the past war crimes committed during WW2) in order to move forward into the future. There is so much nostalgia for the past and the need to have closure from the past in every aspect of this movie, and its executed so brilliantly. The song just encapsulates all these emotions so beautifully without me needing to understand the lyrics, and I was so overwhelmed at how masterful Goro Miyazaki achieved this that I couldn't help but cry!
@@imathyst4885 Try "In this Corner of the World". Read the manga first then watch the anime adaptation. There is a similar nostalgic vibe intertwined with slice-of-life, but it's set in WW2 Japan. It almost feels like a love letter.

I love this song. I can't understand the lyrics but the sadness in her voice, the music, it just hits the right chord. A gush of emotion just spirals in me whenever I listen to it. I am so happy this movie had a happy ending or else I would have lost it, lol. :)
Hi. Excuse me for my bad English, but I'm Italian. The song is very beatiful and absolutely is my favourite best music of Miyazaki's compositions. It's so relaxing and very soft to listen. I like much melody and is very interesting. I hope that everybody can know that music.
I remember hearing this song when I was very young, like maybe 8-9 years old, I didn't know english very well at that time so I couldn't understand that this song and art is from a movie. But I was so in love with both of them, I kept coming back to it.
How does Ghibli manage to make the viewers feel so frikkin nostalgic of times they were never born to witness or of the memories they weren't fortunate enough to experience? 💔🌻
I suppose because it shows how comparatively simple life was at that time. The story focuses on *important* issues regarding family, love, and dedication. It may also be because attached to the time period in which the story is set, is that of a satisfying resolution to the events in it. Even Grave Of The Fireflies has this - although not in an "in this life" sort of fashion. Ghibli films - and many Anime, and Japanese stories, tend to appreciate all their characters' perspectives and feelings. Even the viewer is empathised with, in that their feathers aren't ruffled - unlike in many western productions.
I have watched all if the studio ghibli movies on netfilx now,and "From up on poppy hill" Made me cry the most.I was shocked when the main characters were brother and sister.Damn that was a good movie
Muchas gracias.
Up On Poppy Hill is genuinely such a top-tier Ghibli. Shockingly, Goro hasn't been able to direct much more since it was released in 2013, 11 years ago. Luckily he assisted his dad in The Boy and the Heron. People might not want to accept it but Goro can be JUST as good as his dad, I hope we see more Ghiblis with him as the primary director.

Great analysis! I'm also looking for another anime that could give the same nuance
@@imathyst4885 Try "In this Corner of the World". Read the manga first then watch the anime adaptation. There is a similar nostalgic vibe intertwined with slice-of-life, but it's set in WW2 Japan. It almost feels like a love letter.
The song makes you feel weirdly peaceful like you are alone by your self, looking at a beautiful scenery.
I dont understand a word, but somehow i feel every word the song as if i understand it. It gives me chills aith happiness from withing everytime i listen to ghibli music💛
No one understands 🤷🏻♂️

The power of music, bro. It sends you a message, without explicitly saying it.
I don't understand a single word of this but this is one of the best things I have ever heard.
For the first time while watching a movie i feel so much warmth in my heart that make me want to cry
The storyline, the settings, the character, the song, everything is just perfect
Its just so beautiful
Definitely my new comfort movie
Ghibli has always made me feel nostalgic for things from before my time & this movie was no different.
It was the first movie I showed my mum & I’m glad the dub was good cuz mum liked it. I’ve been thinking of what movie to show to get them into ghibli for a long time & this is def my recommendation
Beautiful song! Tears in my eyes.
I used to be able to sing this. Thank you puberty for ruining singing.
Taiyo Basnett lol don't worry I'm starting to lose my singing voice
You'll probably get it back.
Maybe

I had the sweetest voice in the church chorus... Puberty ruined my passion.
I think Ghibli studio is the reason people want tor explore Japanese culture.
How one can create a such perfect blend of music and story,in my next birth I will request god to bless me with this super power.
Love from every corner of India to Ghibli and Japan.
This movie has a really deep meaning.
With the vibes, peoples, places, and theirs behavior make this movie become so perfect and touch my deepest heart. Idk how to express my feeling when I watch this, whether its sad or happy.
Like.. I live in this movie, so meaningful.
And, this is the first movie I watch from ghibli, after this I watch all theirs movie and suddenly fallen.
I’ve watched studio ghibli movies from when I was 7 years old. My ultimate fave movies. I’m now 22, I felt so lost but I’ve been watching these and I feel like I’m not so lost. Reminds me of when I fell in love with them from a young age. Brings me to those moments.

I can't believe it took me so long! It's such a fantastic movie!
after i finished it, i walked in my garden, lookee up in the sky and admired the stars. this movie is really one of a kind; it has nothing like the other ones and i love it! i was so happy when they found out they dont have the same father! i have a warm place for him in my heart 💓
All Ghibli movies feels like thiss 💗
Ghibli movies depicts what youngster seeks about love and hope. Best studio so far.
Thank you studio Ghibli for portraying pure human emotions and hopes 😊❤️
What a beautiful song... Thank you very very much... I've just watched the film ... LOVE It...
"Raise it one more day, and tomorrow, and forever...
'Till then, your message will fly to the heavens with songs of love and hope."
This is not just a movie, indeed. It has breath. Contains life.
❤️❤️❤️ From the Philippines!
Ghibli really helped me when I was in a bad place. Thank you!
Wait, I've seen that sign before!

W.s Agreed. Favourite Ghibli film
This movie was not directed by hayao Miyazaki. It was directed by his son goro Miyazaki
When I heard this song, I told to myself that it will always have a place in my heart
This movie is so special to me, such an underrated Ghibli movie ❤
One of the most beautiful anime songs I've ever heard. 🥰
Man, Ghibli always leaves you heartbroken...
" *This song was converted and uploaded for the people.* " beautiful
Can we talk about how the voice is so soft
🥲😍
Thank you studio Ghibli for being part of my life ❤️
Such an otherworldy voice... so soothing, so beautiful...
2019 still echo in my heart
My favourite studio Ghibli film of all time 💟
WanderLust My favorite is Spirited Away. :)
Nostalgi Gamer I like raputa
Poppy Hill is great and all but my favorite is Castle in the Sky.
When i first watched that movie i almost cried
💘💘💘💘
I remember hearing this song when I was very young, like maybe 8-9 years old, I didn't know english very well at that time so I couldn't understand that this song and art is from a movie. But I was so in love with both of them, I kept coming back to it.
I think this is pretty much underrated among the other ghibli movies
This movie means so much to me, I really think it's the best ghibli movie, i think it's their most mature film
Bu şarkı bana masumiyeti anlatıyor, saflığı anlatıyor, tertemiz bir kar tanesinin sessiz sessiz yeryüzüne inişini anlatıyor...
I have watched all if the studio ghibli movies on netfilx now,and "From up on poppy hill" Made me cry the most.I was shocked when the main characters were brother and sister.Damn that was a good movie
I should re watch this tonight.
Edit: Was amazing
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Watch it again I dare you

Up on the hill with a gentle breeze and this song on the twilight are the hopes, enough to give the courage to breath and move forward....☺
juste sublime !

This movie is again a masterpiece ghibli knows how to make amazing movies with a catching story and beautiful music even tho the movie and the ending are meant to be happy these little sad scenes made me cry and everytime they showed the photo of the friends on the ship and showed how happy they were made me cry even more such an amazing movie.

i've known about Ghibli Film since i was a kid, but back then i had no idea how great it was until lately ( 11 years later from that first time XD ). Kinda jealous with who have seen and enjoy this since they were a child :( but it's okay, never too late to be a kid one more time :) I'm sure gonna watch these wonderful movies again and again over the years to come.
I am not japenese but still the music and the peaceful voice penetrate my heart...i can feel the melody

My all time favourite song!! I don't think I can ever get rid of it
wow this song is so touching
Had to cry hard when this song was played at the end of the movie. though could convince myself that the ending was happy as the protagonist to the chance to be together but also it made me sad that they had to lose their fathers. And I feel especially as for the 3rd friends of their fathers, who had been carrying the grief of their friend's demise. This long will be in my heart forever. just dropped her after watching the movie, as I got to know to about it from Instagram reels. When someone would like this comment I would get notified to feel this music rumbling in my ears again
Here comes your reminder to listen to this beautiful music, again :)
