Honestly I think Takahata's films are more down to earth while Miyazaki's seems more like a dreamer to me . The messages in takahata's films are clearer than in miyazaki's movies however as it is more down to earth it strikes us harder when watching the movie. Personnaly I was more touched by Pompoko and his message of the importance of nature and the disaster of human overconsumption than Nausicaa. Why I believe because it's was less dreamy (and I know it's still not that realistic but it was closer to my reality than Nausicaa)
This doesn't change the fact that both are great creators and I think it's pointless to try which one's are better.

I've rewatched it a couple of times, and I think Sheeta and Pazu were prepared to perish with the castle to stop Muska. I don't think they knew what would exactly happen, just that the flying city/weapon would be destroyed. And since it was flying high in the air, they'd either di* in the explosion or fall to their doom.
Notice how when Pazu tells Sheeta they'd say the Spell of Destruction together, she tears up and they hug? Yeah, they weren't just choosing nature over greed, they were ready to give their own lives.

The secret of beautiful fantasy is its reflection of real-life truths. If the themes and dreams displayed aren't genuine, they do not reach the viewer/reader so successfully. One of the best aspects of fantasy, then, may be grasped with the realization that the things we love in stories are not just "make-believe," designed as an escape from reality-- rather, they are acute and often painfully pure representations of the things we love about our world and our lives, but struggle to comprehend and express.

    • @thefieldmarshal8682
      @thefieldmarshal8682 4 года назад +24

@@manthishitwack Actually, allow me to correct that, a castle in the sky IS indeed possible! As I like to say, possible, but not plausible. As a matter of fact, the technology needed to make a flying city was around since the mid 1900s! The reason no one every made such a magnificent thing was because of our good old friend, money, of course. After the invention of airplanes and airships, it definitely was possible to make a flying city. An extra large airship with a population of one thousand could certainly be known as a flying city. Otherwise, huge floating platforms large and strong enough to support the weight of an entire city could be levitated into the sky.
However, I do realize that it would take, well, MILLIONS of propellers and hundreds of thousands of engines and an insane amount of fuel to keep the castle airborne. Today, almost a century later, making a castle in the sky is still possible, yet not plausible. It would simply cost too much. But perhaps in the future we would find something that could power the engines, like in the movie, the giant aetherium crystal. Alas, that is not yet possible. What is both possible AND plausible right now is a floating city, one that floats in the ocean. I am currently writing a novel about my idea, its title is "A City at Sea." Will publish it on Kindle after I finish writing.

@your friendly neighborhood gamer Well, allow me to correct that, nothing is strictly impossible at all! I am telling you the truth, the world is full of things that science and reality cannot explain. Take ghosts, for example. I guess we'll never know if they are real or not; for some people they are possible, and for others they are impossible. You see, there are people who have been magically whisked away into a fantastical world for an incredible adventure they would never forget. Take abduction by aliens, for example. Some people claim that it has happened to them, while many others do not believe it. Some people have even gone to say that they have somehow traveled into the future or the past! I guess we'll never know the truth about this. Also, I agree, it remains my favorite film to this day!

When I was little, there didn’t seem to be enough stories with girl heroes that were not marketing grabs. Lyrics translation:
    That horizon
The reason why it is shimmering
is because somewhere on it, the Earth
    is hiding you
    Numerous night lights
the reason why I feel them to be so dear and old is because I know
    with one of them
    you are there
    Now let's set out
    with a piece of bread
knife, and lamp, into a bag,
    all stuffed in
    Passions
    my father left with me
    The look in her eyes
    my mother gave me
    The Earth rotates
    with you on it
    hiding you
    your bright eyes
    admist the twinkling town lights
    The Earth rotates
    carrying you on it
    carrying two of us
    who shall meet one day
Note: I translated as faithfully as I could to the original. I translated mother as "it" since the Earth in Japanese is gender neutral. I felt better to call it "it" rather than "her" as English convention goes.

It was so effing hard and i wish i never started this journey but i passed. I PASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSEEEED. Never in my life was i so excited. I even screamed just by seeing the result. When I was little, around 8 years old my father would always watch movies with me on the weekends, as back then TV would actually show worth to watch movies on a weekly basis. One Saturday he only told me that the trailer he saw earlier during ad break looked promising and that I would surely like it.
Until then I had only known Western animation, I didn't know a thing about Japan but when I watched that movie with my dad I absolutely fell in love with the pure art that is studio ghibli. I would regularly watch the movie when I noticed it was up on TV until I got the DVD for Christmas. I hadn't seen it for a while and watched it again as an adult and I felt right at home again. By now I have seen almost all the other ghibli films and I adore every single one of them, but CitS will forever remain my favourite.

Can’t even lie, it’s been over 10 years since I watched it.
I ended up showing my gf it yesterday, and I actually teared up and started to cry as soon as I heard the first soundtrack.
It was, quite literally, the first movie I ever remember watching. I was an ‘05 kid, so I’m kinda “young” in comparison to the movie. We had it on one of the original eng-dub VHS tapes, same with KiKi’s Delivery Service. Both were pristine, and the player we had was kind of nearing its end. So I wasn’t able to watch it much on them, but I still have the tapes.
It’s one of those movies, where I wish they made just a little bit of a longer animation of Pazu and Sheeta after they made it up north. Just to see what would happen in their lives.
A happy life, learning all about how Sheeta made it so far before she was captured? Would they settle down up in the mountains, or returned to where Pazu lived? Would they grow up and live a happy life together, married with kids? Or travel the world together, and learn more about the floating islands history? Or become famous for such an amazing adventure they’d have accomplished, and be hailed as legends?
Who knows. That’s for our minds to imagine :)

I first saw this as a kid when I think it was shown around Christmas time on English TV, late 80's or early 90's.
My parents recorded it, they did that a lot with cartoons etc for me.
However I only saw it essentially once, the film actually gave me a feeling which I didn't like or understand despite being entranced by it. I got my parents to record over it to use it for something else.
Years later Channel 4 did a Miyazaki season and I took the time to watch it again. That feeling came back and I realised what it actually was: It is the perfect film.
The world building, the distinct characters, the mechanics and of course the hauntingly beautiful soundtrack and incredible animation/imagery.
The ending is the icing on the cake, seeing them all go their separate ways after such an ordeal and wanting to know more, but perfectly we are made to leave this world. I wouldn't want it any other way, I do not want a sequel, it doesn't need that.
And now it has an extra quality - it takes me back to being a kid and to simpler times.

I can not describe what the Ghibli Animes means to me. It’s just perfection on its highest level.
The films really changed my life as a kid. I remember it very well, at the age of 6, when my sister, brother and my mother watch that on our film evening at Friday (SuperRTL - Germany).
Back then and even today, this film creates a strange feeling of nostalgia. It really hurts to see it in a kind way. I think it was the first time ever I felt that. I can not really describe it.
I personally think it’s a masterpiece of art and I really hope that films like these will be produced as long people live.
That’s the reason why I really want to visit Japan one day, maybe move to it.
I REALLY hope, everyone who reads this, is having a good life. Do was makes you happy, you only Love one time in this world
    Greetings from Germany

My life fell apart, I stand in front of my own ruins, I'm only a shadow of myself. Things seem empty, lonely, sad and desperate.
But when I come by studio ghiblis works I see a small glimpse of light shine inside me again. My life used to be so much simpler, I had not much, but all I needed in the end was to watch serene and meaningful animated movies from Japans great studios that still DRAW their works, and I was satisfied. I look back with nostalgia on these days.

The magic that only Studio Ghibli can do.
I don't know how to explain the feelings this film makes me feel.
I think it makes us see the positive side of humans and give us the feel of how dark it would be if humans choose the evil side.
Thank you, Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli for this film and all the great memories.
    Ghibli is life.

Within those glittering lights of the horizon,
    you must be hiding somewhere.
When i see those twinkling stars i feel nostalgic because i know you are in one of them.
Let's set out, pack a bag with a piece of bread, a knife, a lamp
The passion that my father left me
That look that my mother gave me.
The earth is spinning , consealing you
Your eyes are shinning in the glittering light
The earth is spinninh carrying you,
carrying us who shall meet someday.
The passion that my father left me,
That look that my mother gave me.
The earth is spinning, consealing you,
Your eyes are shinning in the glittering light,
The earth is spinning, carrying you,
Carrying us who shall meet someday.
