Sadly, this is probably the closest we'll ever get to seeing Michael Rosenbaum playing a live-action speedster. He was really awesome as the DCAU Flash.

I don't know why people who watch the show don't get this, but Clark can't fly because he has a psychological block preventing him. He fundamentally believes that his human side is his good side that keeps him grounded and that his Kryptonian side is something to be feared. He always wants to be human, even if the desire isn't always conscious. When he finally accepts that he's not capable of being human and that it's not necessarily a bad thing, he flies. Maybe I'm just making excuses for Smallville. It was kind of a stupid show with low-budget effects and nonsensical plotlines. But one thing it did better than any other iteration of Superman is the relationship between Clark and Lex, who was the best character on the show.
Of course it was low budget it was a 20 something episode tv series on the CW. If it was a ten episode series on HBO it would be different and the effects were juat fine to me
low budget effects? they seldom did low quality looking effect, they usually where short but they where really well made. but they did get sloppy later on the last seasons.
There was a copyright issue. They didn’t get permission to feature him flying until the last episode, because the character owners didn’t give them permission to do so. They weren’t able to include Batman character into series for the same reason.
But also Tom Welling did not want to be Superman on Smallville because he signed up to play young CK, so he asked for a plotline with him flying to be removed from the early seasons in accordance with his contract where it was promised that he wouldn’t be flying in tights. At least that is the story 20 yrs later as shared by Tom to Michael in one of the podcasts.
When I was a kid I was disappointed this fight scene didn't last longer...I knew Clark should lose fighting Zod but looking back this is exactly how a fight should go between an un-experienced Superman and Krypton's greatest military general. Same here. I was like “oh come on! He didn’t even get a hit in!”. But Clark is only 19 at this point and his fighting experience came mostly from psychotics with strength, and inexperienced individuals with his powers.
I have watched Smallville for 10 seasons. This particular episode was really good. The shows do have a budget. If you own the DVD's they will explain reasons they had for doing things.
