Hey Max. You never answered people's questions on the "Sony A7III vs A7S2" video. Dropping an authoritative test video onto RUclips showing A7 III with soft image quality and then not following up on it is a bit irresponsible.
dunno if anyone gives a damn but if you guys are bored like me during the covid times you can stream all the new movies and series on instaflixxer. Have been watching with my gf for the last couple of weeks :)
I purchased the 24-70 GM but when it came in and after testing it I couldn’t justify keeping it for the price point. Tamron is on backorder everywhere so I paid an extra 150 to get it early and have been beyond satisfied. Save your money guys !!!
Thank you for a great video. Now I really feel that GM lens are overpriced. I thought I would buy it as a long-term investment but sharpness is the most important aspect of the lens for me.
TechLineHD, your comment makes no sense, you say you would pay 3000 for it, but then again you wouldn't pay 3000 for it because it's not a good lens. we aren't talking about an imaginary 24/70 that is the ultimate 24/70, we are comparing to the 24.70 GM that actually exist, so you would not pay $3000 for the 24/70 GM because in your own words its not that good.
@@chrisrodas10 trust me you will love it! but if currently you're a canon or nikon user, at first the setting and setups will be a littler complicated! but there are a lot of videos to help you on youtube. I recommend studying about LOG video format before getting it. good luck.
Good to see that there is some competition in the Sony world. I love the 24-70GM. It's basically my always on lens. Did a 4 week roadtrip in the US recently and I used that lens 98% of the time.
i think it's extremely important that budding photographers should buy within your budget . there are a lot of photographers with expensive gear who don't know how to take a picture AT ALL. this was great review overall. cheers mate 👌🏻
I literally JUST took delivery of the 24-70 GM! All of the AF issues scared me away from the Tamron. I need a solid go-to lens for videography and didn't want to take any chances. The Tamron does look pretty solid though.
Thanks Max for this great comparison review. And thanks also to Tamron for coming up with such a great-value product. I was so hesitant to upgrade to full-frame - because of expensive lenses - but with this lens you just made the best of full-frame system within my reach.
I really like the Tamron but am I the only one that's disappointed by the bokeh? GM lens has really smooth bokeh and the Tamrons bokeh has a weird effect. Objects seem to have some weird outlines.
Believe me, I had the 17-50 2.8 for my Nikon, and that bokeh is so familiar to me. Is a really ugly bokeh, while Sony's are soft and beautiful. I know sonys are overpriced, but just to avoid that bokeh I'd rather go with the Sony.
The sony lens actually has distortion as well, but the camera corrects it in software, which accounts for some of the corner softness you're seeing. (Try to detach it, put tape on the pins, then reattach it.) That makes me wonder, might a future firmware upgrade add support for distortion correction to the tamron lens as well?
I did test the 24-70 GM slightly detached and while there was some distortion I was really impressed by how little. I talked about this and showed examples in my Tamron 28-75 vs Sony 24-105 F4 comparison, where that Sony has a lot of distortion without the software correction. For the GM there is very little software corrections so I didn't think it was worth mentioning. I do hope a firmware update will enable software correction! That would be a huge bonus for this Tamron.
Hey Max! Great review. I have had both lenses and what I found that the Tamron had issues for me with continuous focus in low light video situations! I was really surprised. The Tamron would hunt for focus while the other G-Master did not. It was that reason that I returned my Tamron and went with the G-Master.
Did you notice such behavior while taking photos? I can't decide which one to choose for weddings. I need a good AF in low light... Thank you in advance!
I agree with your preference for the Tamron. However, I shoot with the A6500 and chose that camera as the basis of my travel kit. IMO the Tamron, although a wonderful lens is a bit heavy for that use... I also prefer a lens with internal focusing and zoom so that it doesn't retract.
I was considering the GM before I watched this review. I'll definitely purchase the Tamron and buy either 20mm or 24mm Sigma Art Prime lens. Thank you so much Max.
This was a fantastic review, Max! Really in depth and thorough...not a simple task. I'm picking up the Tamron tomorrow for my Sony, so I'm excited to test it out, especially after watching your video. Just subscribed...thanks man!
How do they compare when it comes to chromatic aberrations? @ 6:20 The Tamron has purple edges around the silver window frame of that black car, while the Sony looks pretty clean.
I was tempted but no thanks ill stick to native glass. I can't trust it, on a job I don't need to worry about firmware! I recently switched from Nikon so weight is a non issue for me 24-70 gm all day!
I enjoyed this review. maybe because it backed up my opinion about what I thought this lens would be since I heard it announced. I have had GM die hards try to tell me that it doesn't compare. or they act like the Tamron is a Kit lens. so it is a real joy to see people saying it is actually sharper than the GM. but I know there is still a market for the GM. because there were allot of people who bought Canon L glass because it had a red ring. but this Tamron is really going to make a dent in the sales of the Sony 24/70 GM and also the 24/105 f4. the price alone is hard to argue with. almost 1/3 rd the price of the GM, and the fact that it's almost half the weight is a big selling point. along with the close focusing, but the fact that it's sharper at f2.8 is the big surprise. yes I know the GM has the better feeling build quality and the button on the lens. and 4mm more on the wide end, but personally I am ok with 28mm. but as far as build quality, I have recently seen some posts about the 24/70 GM rubber focus ring getting out of shape and starting to fall off after around a year of use. and my Tamron 24/70 f2.8 VC is maybe 6 years old and has never had any issues. and that leads me to something I don't think you even mentioned in this video. witch is the Sony has a one year warranty, and the Tamron in America has a 6 year warranty. enjoyed the comparison.
Hey Max thanks for the great comparison ! I will go for the Tamron then. By the way, with which lense did you film this video ? Is it the sony E 50mm f1.8 ? Looks so sharp ! Thanks for you answer
You will absolutely love that lens. If it fits your budget, and you love the results, keep it. I have the Tamron, and i rented the gmaster for a weekend and adore them both. I found the gmaster a little sharper than Max seems to - but both a great lenses.
Update...I love my 24 70. Beautiful images and video is excellent. I've heard there were some issues with the Tamron compatibility. Small issues that an update might fix. I need mine to be 100% reliable or I would just be too nervous. I'll keep my Sony lens but certainly keep an eye on all new Tamron and Sigma lens as they seem to be serious about this marker.
The Tamron is a great lens too, but part of what makes it great is being so much cheaper than the g-master. Tamron released their firmware update yesterday so the focus issues are fixed for it. But congrats on the gmaster. That is an awesome lens.
Haven't watched yet (mobile data), but i'm sure it's great as always. For the price of the GM you can get the tamron, the sigma 14-24 and the mc11 adapter and all the wide angle you need.
I have to contradict my original answer about the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens. I have been shooting with one for about a year now and love it on both my A7iii and my A6400...
GFFmatt Thanks! I just stood with my back to it. The ride wireless with the included mic does a decent job with background noise suppression. I always avoided situations like this one until I was forced to shoot once and the result wasn’t half bad. The background music helps a bit as well.
The biggest question is what camera and lens was this video shot on. Did you have a second A7iii to take this video, or another Sony? I am trying to determine this camera A7iii with Tamron 28-75mm vs. Nikon Z6 for shooting wedding videos. What do you think?
Question. I currently have the Sony 16-35 GM f2.8 + Sony 85mm f1.8, but am hoping to switch to a 1 lens for all set-up for run-and-gun video w/ photo and occasional gimbal work. Split between switching to the 24-70 GM vs the 28-75 Tamron. Hmmm.......suggestions? (ps- i have a Zhiyun Crane Plus, too heavy for the 24-70 GM so would have to switch to Ronin S if we went the GM route). My hesitancy is the if 28mm will be too narrow...
Obviously at 28mm it would be sharper than 24mm if you're zooming in on the same object to the same percentage... You should have compared them both at 28mm
I double check my copy of 24-70GM on my A7ii body, it is really sharp at the center@2.8, and reasonable sharp on extreme corner, so Max, you should try another copy(if you have the chance) and do it again, because there is a quality control problem of 24-70GM before July of 2017, shown as not sharp or assemble issue.
Unfortunately, I can't check it, but all the other tests were still valid. I also tested this Tamron vs the Sony 24-105 F4 G and the Tamron was sharper. I tested that same 24-105 F4 G to a different 24-70 GM and the 24-105 was basically just as sharp as that GM. Maybe there are other copies that are sharper in the corners but in general, the GM's are great and the Tamrons performance being this good shows that its great too :)
Nice review Max, any insight as to weather sealing on either or? Makes a difference for me. Bad enough that Sony bodies don't seem to be as well sealed as my Canon gear was but don't want to be worried about the body and the lens too.

6:06 omg having your lense upside down and sensor exposed facing up. Monster
would it have been safer the other way around?
I purchased the 24-70 GM but when it came in and after testing it I couldn’t justify keeping it for the price point.

Thank you for a great video. Now I really feel that GM lens are overpriced. I thought I would buy it as a long-term investment but sharpness is the most important aspect of the lens for me.
not really overpriced, it's price for brand.
Bear Bull I would definitely pay even $3000 for it as I want flagship Sony product but the lens is simply not that good
I think it's mainly the 24-70 that is overpriced and not all GM lenses, as the 24-70 is also worse than the canon

I own 85gm. Focus speed is horrible on it. Batis wins anyday.
Bought the A7 III with the Tamron after watching your video. Thank you very much!

You had me at Tamron was “sharper”.
Screaming
Exactly! lol
Hideous bokeh is acceptable to you?
Declan Murphy sharpness > bohek for me at least.
Cool. I guess you don't shoot portraits/fashion.
1:02 I think you meant „24mm“...
I had the 28 75 F2.8 on loan from tamron for my holiday the other week, loved it so much I had to buy one 😁
How is it on the Sony A7ii?
The Tamron has been backordered for over a month. good luck getting it
Your best bet is to order it now and wait, I think it will be selling out for a while just like the a7iii.
update, backordered for over 2 months already, still nothing on both adorama and bandhphoto
great review dude.
My build is Tamron 24-75 + Sony Zeiss 16-35 F4 :D u can buy it for same price than G master. And you have 16-75 focal lenght :)
Haven't watched yet (mobile data), but i'm sure it's great as always.
For the price of the GM you can get the tamron, the sigma 14-24 and the mc11 adapter and all the wide angle you need.
That's crazy I work for multicare and it's been crazy adopting valley hospital into the system
Own the tamron and its prob on the camera the most. Its the most versatile, takes beautiful pics, and its so light and ergonomic!
Man, that bokeh tho! Such a fussy bokeh on the Tamron :( I really want this lens, and will probably buy it, but man it's busy.
Thanks! Do you think Tamron 28-75 will be good at shooting sports events?
Great review
Does tamron works for a7ii? Please make video test!
Yes
what 20mm f2 ? do you like, are you talking about the Tokina Ferin
Max what you think about new sigma 24-70 art ?
I have to contradict my original answer about the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens. I have been shooting with one for about a year now and love it on both my A7iii and my A6400...
Super thanks....for a great review.
What camera stabilizer do you use for your videos? Only Crane V2 or ones as well.
Great video again , thanks for the info , I want one 😎
I just literally got the Sony A7III I'm on a budget currently at the moment so I got the 28-70mm kit lens. Is it worth getting the Tamron
I bought the GM last summer. After seeing this review along with others on Tamron, I’m very relieved that I decided on the GM.
fightingmink why is that?
Yep
can I used the tamron 28-75 mm in my A6400 without any crop sensor?
But the Tamron dont have image stabilization...
does the Sony lens fit on Sony a6600?
fantastic video!!!tnx a lot max
Si tengo dinero para comprar GM es buena opción o de plano las otras opciones ofrecen la misma calidad?
What about AF in video mode issue? Still no firmware released.
Hey max is it normal for such a long wait for the tamron firmware fix
Great review, Max - but I really want to know is HOW did you suppress that waterfall sound?
GFFmatt Thanks! I just stood with my back to it. The ride wireless with the included mic does a decent job with background noise suppression. I always avoided situations like this one until I was forced to shoot once and the result wasn’t half bad. The background music helps a bit as well.
rode wireless meaning filmmaker kit?
The biggest question is what camera and lens was this video shot on. Did you have a second A7iii to take this video, or another Sony? I am trying to determine this camera A7iii with Tamron 28-75mm vs. Nikon Z6 for shooting wedding videos. What do you think?
I wish I would have saw it in low light conditions other than that loved the review
On the Crane V2, can it do the Tamron and the Sony a9? I know the a9 is a little heavier than the a7iii. Thanks Max!
Great video. Keep up the good work!
Obviously at 28mm it would be sharper than 24mm if you're zooming in on the same object to the same percentage... You should have compared them both at 28mm
Yes, I noticed that too. It's obviously unfair comparison at 24 and 28 on other hand
Obviously your an a-hole, you should be compared to other a-holes myself included.

Maybe there are other copies that are sharper in the corners but in general, the GM's are great and the Tamrons performance being this good shows that its great too :)
Totally agree, just saying there is some issue on 2470GM that needs to be consider too. After all, 2470GM still is a great lens if able to afford one.
Would you say the larger glass on the Sony helps it perform better in low-ight? I haven't seen anyone touch upon this. Maybe it makes no difference.
Hey Max Great Video. one question is the manual focus backwards like on other tamron's or is it like canon?
Nice review Max, any insight as to weather sealing on either or? Makes a difference for me. Bad enough that Sony bodies don't seem to be as well sealed as my Canon gear was but don't want to be worried about the body and the lens too.
Wish they would release the firmware fix for the AF issues.
Thanx!
Max, do you know what is gong on with Jason Lanier?
Joedy Barnes what are you talking about?
Hey Max! I was wondering if the tamron is easy for video manual focus???
It’s about average for an electronic lens. Similar to the Sony but not as good as a manual lens (still better than cheap electronic focusing lenses)
How do you shoot video in photo mode? 10fps burst isn’t enough for video
You can shoot video in any of the modes, just hit the video record button. Or start the camera in M mode and then turn the dial to video mode.
i owned a tamron 28-75mm f2.8 Nikon FX mount 5 years ago. And it's great lens on budget!
Great review Max! But how can Tamron update the firmware is the lens doesn't have a usb dock?
You'll be able to update it through the camera.
Do u need an adapter for that?
Nope. Its a native full-frame E-Mount lens.
Max Yuryev didn’t understand why they didn’t did an 24-70
flame Because 28-75 allowed Tamron to save on weight and size.
Max Yuryev did they fix that autofocus bug yet?
I was leaning towards the Tamron until you got to the end and told me the auto focus messes up from time to time? No way
It was fixed with a firmware update which you can download and easily install and the second batch onward had it pre-installed.
Great comparision! It seems like now there is a budget fast zoom lens choice for A7x owners with that Tamron :)
Will this work on Sony a6000?
Plan on buying it so once i upgrade to FF, then its FF ready
