Star photography with a phone, the best way to light paint the foreground subject

- When youre doing star photography with a phone, its often hard to light paint the subject for the shot.
In this video we will take photos of the night sky with the iPhone 15 Pro Max, but this method will work well with the Google Pixel 8 Pro and any android phone too.

Great photo! Been looking for a better light for light painting. Just ordered the Ulanzi. Thanks for the suggestion!
Nice one
A nice composition that is well thought out and well lit. One of my favourite Milky Way shots you’ve taken.
Thanks mate. But what is a mole composition?
@@ShayneMostyn I have no idea where that came from. Stupid autocorrect 🤦🏻♂️
Bro Shayne!
Waiting for S24U still
Hey Shayne. I'd love to see same tests feom Sony IMX989 that has 1.6um pixels (probably the largest in phone camera sensor) and with 2x(4:1) on-sensor binning it translates to 3.2um which is on par with some dedicated Zwo sensors. Compared to Samsung S23 Ultra's 200MP sensor has 0.6um pixel size with a 4x(16:1) on-sensor binning gives 2.4um pixel size IMX989 hass 177% more light collecting area which means more data in same time duration.
I'd recommend Xiaomi 13 Pro or Xiaomi 12S Ultra. But Vivo X90 Pro or Vivo X100 Pro has the same sensor.

Another informative video - thanks Shane. Are you able to get hold of an S24U for astro review purposes?
No not yet mate.
Nice! jJust wondering how do you get your sky so bright? I'm finding when using an Iphone and Gopro the sky is still quite dark and then I get a fair bit of noise when I try and lighten it in post. Do the town lights in your images make it brighter? Where I take photos it's pitch black and I just use a flashlight to light the subject.
Thats odd mate. Every iPhone Ive done this with, makes the sky too bright. Its the main identifier between brands when I look at photos. Not doing anything to make it brighter.
So good! What is the trend for the milky way at certain times of night? Is it lower in the sky at 10:30pm compared to say 3:30pm? Does it change its position much or time it rises in Summer compared to the other seasons? Is there a chart or app out there which can help you track exactly where and when the Milky Way will be up?
It just depends on where you are. I have a video about planning this type of shot. You will see in that video how to work that out
Love the shadowing on the tree with that amazing sky. Did you have the light ON shining the tree for the whole exposure or flashed for a few like you did with the trees on one of your older videos? (I assume you did have it on, just trying to get clarification)
Yes I did, it stayed on mate. Very low light
Excellent as usual Shayne. Cant wait for summer when we have the Milky Way visible in Minnesota to try some shots like yours. In the mean time, still fun to take star shots with my iphone
Absolutely mate
Sur I have a problem when I do all the settings on my android and when u click the photo and wait for 30 sec and when I see the picture it's all white is it because of the street light around me or ? Pls do reply
Reduce ISO and try to choose a dark area.
That’s One Incredible Shot ✨
Cheers mate
You worked hard on that, several superb results, such a great tree to use, I'm sure I've seen it before 🤔😊, absolutely love the photo, well done 🏴
Nope, not that tree. They all look the same at some point 😂😂
@@ShayneMostyn 😂😊bugger, superb photo though, 👌👌
Is the milky way visible now in feb? If yes then at what time ?
Depending on where you are mate
Please upload them in site🙏
Done mate
You avoiding the s24 ultra. ,, mmmmmmmmmm. Still apple. Boy!!!!!!
Haha nice comment. Well thought out. After the shit show my S23U turned into with the updates, I was reluctant to get the S24U. Looks like there are plenty of issues with it on the FB groups. Just don’t see the point in getting it to do what I do here when there is no difference. If my channel was broader than the style of photos u do, there would be a need to get it. But not for what I do. Cheers mate
Why? 😂 okay get it bad camera on day 1 but will be better in time
@@ShayneMostyn haha i know there are some issues but i got lucky didnt get any except 200 mp and 50mp bad post processing. It was the same on s23 ultra when comes out but they fixed soo i hope they fixed these too
8:30 NICE music, Luke from the OutdoorGearReview channel uses it as his outro very nice
Very nice job on the video with things to try. That said, it is possible to accomplish the same with a samsung without stacking two pictures - just dial back the light intensity as you demonstrated.😊
Thanks mate. Ive always found the S-series phones to not be nearly as sharp on foreground when the stars are sharp. My S23U still cant do it well at all. 2 images, no problem, but single frame, not so good.
Absolutely beautiful. I wish my s21 would work. Im not ready to get a new phone yet.
Cheers mate, thanks for watching :)
Awesome!
Great photo. I really appreciate your videos
