These early episodes had so much heart and grit. This episode is a microcosm of what the show was all about, Fred and Lamont struggling financially, Fred trying to keep Lamont in the business, the 2 of them sniping at each other but in the end they love each other and are best friends.
One of TV best sitcoms ever to the actors and actresses who passed away my thoughts are with your family you may be gone but not forgotten still going strong keep the laughs coming god bless you guys thanks you guys rock way to go true comedy at its very best thanks for a good laugh and the memories you should be proud way to go !!! What a brilliant way to making the comedy in those good old days !!! I came to America around late 70 and when I watched this show i was cracking up so much that I started falling in love with America 🤣
@@jaymike3302 They wanted Aunt Ethel to be a foil for Fred (Beah Richards), but her demeanor was too nice. So at Redd's insistence, they gave LaWanda Page a shot, and the rest is history.

And one of the guests was Tina Andrews. She would later play Fred's niece, who was the image of Elizabeth. She also played Grady's granddaughter on his short lived spin-off, along with Heywood Nelson, who later became Dwayne on What's Happening.
Rosanne Katon played Grady's niece. Haywood Nelson who was Dewayne on What's Happening played his grandson. Carol Cole who was Natalie Cole's sister, Nat King Cole's daughter played his daughter. Joe Morton who in later years found fame on Scandal played his son-in-law.
Especially the first episode. If I had treated my father that way even at that age, he still would have gotten a strap after me. The second episode, Happy Birthday, Pop, showed what would be a regular occurrence on the show; Fred saying and doing things to embarrass Lamont, especially when he hit on that receptionist on the TB or Not TB episode.
Lamont was angry because he felt trapped. He was in a business that made little money pretty much by himself when he could have done better by himself. Then his dad used manipulating tactics so he would not leave. He loved his father but resented him at the same time.
@@Biggdoom344 That's an interesting reason but I still would never talk to my Father like that. Lamont was frustrated I get that but he could talk to his Father another way.
I always liked this scene because Lamont always had a heart of Gold and always tried to be respectful, but seeing how his family was treating him, he actually started acting like his Dad towards them. Fred Sanford is a Legend.
I was 13 when this was made its debut in 1972, I still remember that was the talk of the school on Monday morning the 'cake toss' hitting the old aunt was legendary.
I identify with this SO MUCH! Growing up in a Black working class family in the 1960's, family members acted EXACTLY like this (language, mannerisms, etc) during Xmas and bar-b-ques, parties, etc. Lots of memories watching this. Aunt Hazel and Uncle Edgar had it DOWN!
Wonderful show and so much better than today comedies. Thst new show "Ghosts" on CBS was not funny to me. People were laughing but why.? No I would rather watch Sanford and son or All in the family or the Honeymooners or Ilove Lucy Or Green acres than Ghosts.
This is a funny 😂😂😂 one fread going to put everyone out and they going to take all there stuff back the wrong for that and the cake going to hit that lady in the face 😂😂😂

I bought that toaster In the pool hall. Probably from Guy's Groovy Grab Bag.

Uncle Edgar called it the way he saw it. And he was right🤣👍!!!
I can always find a use for this quote -- Especially with the current politics.

Lamont's expression when Uncle Edgar was insulting him😂😂

Fred: "YOU TELL'EM, SON!!!"
No other comedy compares to the first three seasons of Sanford and Son 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
The first 3 seasons were great!
You're absolutely right! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Yeah...they were definitely the best out of all six seasons.
It sort of went down starting with the 1974/75 season. I think that they were PO'd at Redd over his walking off over a contract dispute.
