Sanford and Son was the greatest half hour on television. I was in high school when it came on air. Redd Foxx and Lawndale Page battles made the show. This is virtually the same conversation Fred had with Aunt Esther, in which he tells her to put her liver on her face when she said she has inner beauty.
Beah Richards was supposed to be a foil for Fred, but her demeanor was too nice, so at Redd's advice, Lawanda Page was given a shot, as Redd knew her from the nightclub circuit. She was hired and Aunt Ethel became Aunt Esther. And we know the rest.
This performance was considered too nice? She hung in there with Redd and zinged him viciously a few times. That’s how it goes in Hollywood, I reckon. 😏
It just goes to show how fickle Hollywood can be. Sandford and Son was a hit show but this was a small part for Beah Richards especially being that a few years before this she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for playing Sidney Poitier's Mother in "Guess who's coming to dinner".
Beah Richards' appearance on Sanford and Son likely came from her personal choice rather than Hollywood's unpredictability. She was at the peak of her career during this time, and Richards probably had many significant roles available to her. It's possible that she chose this particular role out of her fondness for Redd Foxx and because it didn't require a major time commitment.
Trust me folks. This segment includes 'outtakes' not included on the original broadcasts from the 1970's. I both know that as a fact, and I have tapes of ALL episodes to prove it (not that it matters a hill of beans here). That aside, Redd Foxx is so f'n f'unny!
