One thing that you might find fascinating is the reason we have a Royal Navy and a Royal Air Force, but not a Royal Army. This is because the Army is desended (for want of a better expression) from the New Model Army developed by Oliver Cromwell and the Parliamentarians who faught against the Royalists during the English Civil War. The real power rest with the people. We keep the monarchy in place and we can remove it any time we want. Brexit being the most recent example of that.
The Queen is very influential. In Saudi Arabia women were not allowed to drive and when the King of that country visited the Queen, she drove him around her Estate - she doesnt drive like Miss Daisy either. Now women are allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia. During WW2, the Queen was in the military and drove ambulances and can fix engines - she was a good mechanic. You can see the State Opening of Parliament on RUclips (the Queen also opens the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish Parliaments. The Queen is my hero. I'm the biggest royalist you will ever see (with a few exceptions of course) but she really is a living saint. I hate when people say 'what does she do? she just sits there with loads of money' like morons. Support for the Queen and the Royal family within the United Kingdom varies from North and South. Its been hit hard with the situation surrounding Prince Andrew but she has dealt with it superbly and requlishing his royal title has increased the support once again. The challenges she has faced throughout her life from Prince Diana to losing Prince Phillip she has come through it stronger each time and alot of women in our country look to her as a role model.

Prince Charles has often spoken publicly on what are regarded as political issues, but they are usually views on the environment, for which he was mocked for many years. He used to be written off as someone who talked to his plants etc but he was years ahead of the curve. I've always liked Charles, he gets such a raw deal sometimes.

Stephen Fry posed an interesting thought about this. Our prime minister has weekly meetings with the monarch to discuss government matters. Presumably with all the formalities, bowing etc. What difference would it make if the president of the US had to have weekly meetings with some embodiment of the US people (like if uncle Sam was a real person, a figurehead of the nation)?
Also applies, in the case of the United States, to the family of any American public servants who happen to be in a foreign country, whether the foreign country knows they (the public servants) are there or not.
We love and respect the Queen because of her wisdom and oversight. She is our ultimate democratic appeal and in most times she has no need to exercise her considerable constitutional powers. But knowing that there is a super power that will act if politicians become extremists and work against the common weal of our nation is comforting. The British armed forces swear allegiance to her and the country (meaning her subjects). This is the most important thing. She is a political safety net in a manner of speaking. The Queen's powers are theoretical. She does have them, but it's inconceivable that she could ever use them. Think of The Queen as a 'glass cannon', immensely powerful, but if ever used it would break itself.
I've always wondered though what would happen if she used her power but entirely for the benefit of the people. Let's say _hypothetically_ (can't stress that enough) she uses her power and all of a sudden, prices and taxes are down, wages are up, the economy is great, and the general happiness of the nation's citizens rises. Would it still damage the monarchy? Cause ultimately it's the people that decide whether or not that institution has any real power, but if the people suddenly benefitted massively from that institution using its power, would the people still have the same animosity for it, or would public perception change for the better? I always wondered about that...🤷🏻

The Monarchy has constantly evolved over the whole history of the UK but the 17th century was a big turning point with Oliver Cromwell & the Civil War which ended with the beheading of Charles 1 and the power of Parliament being established even though Cromwell became rapidly unpopular and the Monarchy was reinstated but with some controls of power.
The last monarchy to ignore an election and choose their own Prime minister was Queen victoria, it caused a lot of upheaval and even an attempt on her life for it so she eventually relented

The Law in the UK is derived from the Crown, currently embodied in the Queen. Criminal are prosecuted by the Crown making it a bit tricky to prosecute the monarch. Who wins in Crown v Crown?
13:23 - the whales thing is an old custom - before petroleum products oil came from whales so they were quite valuable (they were also used for their bones, cartilage, meat, ambergris etc). There's other old customs about owning animals, like the Monarch owns all the sturgeon, whales and porpoises in UK water, and all mute swans which are found on the River Thames
Many of these "powers" were set in historical times so to us might seem bizzare but to them were totally needed and acceptable.Most dont really "translate" into modern times but its interesting to note what mattered in times gone by.
As you both noted, although the Queen has immeasurable power *on paper*, in reality she is limited by the will of the people. We are far from the days of monarchy having absolute power that they can actually *use*. It's a very delicate balance, but The Queen has managed it with grace for 70 years. I'm so proud of our Queen. Many knock the monarchy, but she offers us great stability and carries huge diplomatic power. She doesn't hold state banquets for the laughs... The subtle politics and currying of favour that happens between heads of state and political leaders, doubtless keeps the country's wheels greased on the world stage. We have such a lot of history, and there are so many nuances within our current system which have been picked up and evolved in that time, leading to the way things are today. And honestly, although it sounds like there are no checks and balances in the Queen's powers... Even our constitution is unwritten... There absolutely *are*. Having power and not using it is something no leader would contemplate . The Queen is the head of state without the desire to use that power and in any case that is why we have politicians. I can only think that that those powers remain in the event of a politician becoming a dictator because the military services swear an oath to the Queen not some politician. Hey Ladies, The Queen and her media team have always given a no comment to anything thrown at the Queen in the media. However that changed recently as the Queen felt she needed to respond to a number of serious allegations made by Megan. Although the response from the Queen was fairly standard saying that wasn't the way she remembered things in relation to race and bullying claims and she was sorry if Megan felt that way. The Queen has great soft power within world leaders. She's very well respected throughout the world as I guess you would be after 70 years of power! The newly elected prime minister's first job is to go and see the Queen as she must approve him or her. It's a formality really. The prime minister has a weekly audience with the Queen in private where according to many past prime ministers a franc exchange of views over suggested law changes, new laws or world events are exchanged. Many former PM's say she's a great sounding board as she's seen a lot in 70 years!!
Hi guys, glad you got the subtlety of HM's hidden powers that she doesn't use. Yes, she has a lot of power but it's the fact that she doesn't use it that makes it more powerful. I was young when she was crowned, I remember the day well because I was confined to bed with German measles. I now see her getting old and becoming unwell and feel a little concerned with who will replace her when the time comes. As to keeping out of politics, yes, she does, unlike a certain "royal couple" who live in the US that have lied and dealt a great deal of hurt to the royal family with their lies and antics. They haven't harmed the royal family, only themselves and most people here dislike them immensely. There are a few anti royalists in the UK but they are few, most of understand her pace in the British constitution and respect it.
Hi you should check out the english civil war, the restoration of monarchy to understand more about shift of power. Also Henry viii and the break from catholicism formation of the church of England. This should help in understanding monarchs constitutional position today. Its more complex than the two points of historical change above but its a start. Hope thats usefull.

In regards to all criminal law the Monarch is above the Law, mainly because all proposed laws have to be given what is called Royal Assent, after which it will become a law. Also the higher courts are called Crown courts, so it would be the Crown vs the Crown, however the Monarch is not immune to being taken to a civil court.
Yes, the Queen has removed a duly elected Prime Minister from office in 1975, but in Australia, not Britain. The Australian prime minister Gough Whitlam, was sacked by the Queen's representative in Australia however, the Queen knew nothing about it until after. But technically and legally, the Queen sacked Whitlam.
If the united Kingdom was ever in a real tragedy or seriously troubled times to a level where Her Majesty the Queen feels a need to intervene, I have no doubt that the people, military, police and alike would follow her leadership before any politician. I'm English & I've never even thought about her being immune from prosecution... I suppose she's above the law because she would be prosecuting herself (would make for an interesting case). The judiciary acts on behalf of The Crown.
Completely true, my bothers best mate is a barrister, he said many years ago that the Judge in the crown court exercises the powers of the queen or the crown, so in brief if she walked into one of her crown courts and a Judge even attempted to pass judgement on her the law states they should immediately be arrested for contempt of court and imprisoned immediately with length of sentence to be decided by the queen herself which could be anything she wanted. This has never happened and probably never will, but there has been drafts and discussions by legal experts in the crown court behind closed doors it would probably be 30 days incarceration and Permanente removal of any involvement in the British courts and all titles removed permanently for judging against HRH as one of her Judges.

We vote for a Candidate who represents a political party at a local level to become a Member of Parliament (MP) The leader of the political party with the majority of MP's is summond to the Palace for an audience with Her Majesty, the Queen congratulates the Leader on winning the election asks him or her if they can form a Government if the answer is yes she appoints them as Prime Minister. A lot of Brits and Americans think she lives a fairytale lifestyle and is just a figurehead. Every day of her life except Christmas Day and Easter Day, she receives red boxes of state of paperwork which needs her approval including new laws. The Queen's recent health problems which she stayed overnight in hospital, she has been ordered to rest and only do light duties. So at the age of 95, she has cancelled all her engagements involving travel, including hosting COP26 climate change in Glasgow. When Prince Charles & Princess Diana married, my sister & I had "Di-mania"! I subscribed to "Royalty Monthly" & followed her every move. We were devastated when she was tragically killed. Lost interest in the new generation of Royals--although William & Kate have been GREAT. But the Queen is absolutely amazing & is an inspiration. Greatly admire her. Wonderful show!!!

The Queen is very influential. In Saudi Arabia women were not allowed to drive and when the King of that country visited the Queen, she drove him around her Estate - she doesnt drive like Miss Daisy either. Now women are allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia.
During WW2, the Queen was in the military and drove ambulances and can fix engines - she was a good mechanic.
You can see the State Opening of Parliament on RUclips (the Queen also opens the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish Parliaments. There is lots of pageantry too eg The Trooping of the Colour - these past 2 years this ceremony has been greatly reduced due to the Rona.

Support for the Queen and the Royal family within the United Kingdom varies from North and South. Its been hit hard with the situation surrounding Prince Andrew but she has dealt with it superbly and requlishing his royal title has increased the support once again. The challenges she has faced throughout her life from Prince Diana to losing Prince Phillip she has come through it stronger each time and alot of women in our country look to her as a role model.

Prince Charles has often spoken publicly on what are regarded as political issues, but they are usually views on the environment, for which he was mocked for many years. He used to be written off as someone who talked to his plants etc but he was years ahead of the curve. I've always liked Charles, he gets such a raw deal sometimes.

Stephen Fry posed an interesting thought about this. Our prime minister has weekly meetings with the monarch to discuss government matters. Presumably with all the formalities, bowing etc.

We love and respect the Queen because of her wisdom and oversight. She is our ultimate democratic appeal and in most times she has no need to exercise her considerable constitutional powers. But knowing that there is a super power that will act if politicians become extremists and work against the common weal of our nation is comforting. The British armed forces swear allegiance to her and the country (meaning her subjects). This is the most important thing. She is a political safety net in a manner of speaking. The Queen's powers are theoretical. She does have them, but it's inconceivable that she could ever use them. Think of The Queen as a 'glass cannon', immensely powerful, but if ever used it would break itself.

I've always wondered though what would happen if she used her power but entirely for the benefit of the people. Let's say _hypothetically_ (can't stress that enough) she uses her power and all of a sudden, prices and taxes are down, wages are up, the economy is great, and the general happiness of the nation's citizens rises. Would it still damage the monarchy? Cause ultimately it's the people that decide whether or not that institution has any real power, but if the people suddenly benefitted massively from that institution using its power, would the people still have the same animosity for it, or would public perception change for the better?

The Monarchy has constantly evolved over the whole history of the UK but the 17th century was a big turning point with Oliver Cromwell & the Civil War which ended with the beheading of Charles 1 and the power of Parliament being established even though Cromwell became rapidly unpopular and the Monarchy was reinstated but with some controls of power.

Many of these "powers" were set in historical times so to us might seem bizzare but to them were totally needed and acceptable.Most dont really "translate" into modern times but its interesting to note what mattered in times gone by.
As you both noted, although the Queen has immeasurable power *on paper*, in reality she is limited by the will of the people. We are far from the days of monarchy having absolute power that they can actually *use*. It's a very delicate balance, but The Queen has managed it with grace for 70 years. I'm so proud of our Queen. Many knock the monarchy, but she offers us great stability and carries huge diplomatic power. She doesn't hold state banquets for the laughs... The subtle politics and currying of favour that happens between heads of state and political leaders, doubtless keeps the country's wheels greased on the world stage.
We have such a lot of history, and there are so many nuances within our current system which have been picked up and evolved in that time, leading to the way things are today. And honestly, although it sounds like there are no checks and balances in the Queen's powers... Even our constitution is unwritten... There absolutely *are*. But they are based in our history and traditions and the power of the people.

Having power and not using it is something no leader would contemplate . The Queen is the head of state without the desire to use that power and in any case that is why we have politicians. I can only think that that those powers remain in the event of a politician becoming a dictator because the military services swear an oath to the Queen not some politician. Hitler got the German army to swear an oath to him and though the Queen has German blood i think i know who i would like to see the military swear an oath to of the two .

The Queen and her media team have always given a no comment to anything thrown at the Queen in the media. However that changed recently as the Queen felt she needed to respond to a number of serious allegations made by Megan. Although the response from the Queen was fairly standard saying that wasn't the way she remembered things in relation to race and bullying claims and she was sorry if Megan felt that way.
The Queen has great soft power within world leaders. She's very well respected throughout the world as I guess you would be after 70 years of power!
The newly elected prime minister's first job is to go and see the Queen as she must approve him or her. It's a formality really. The prime minister has a weekly audience with the Queen in private where according to many past prime ministers a franc exchange of views over suggested law changes, new laws or world events are exchanged. Hi guys, glad you got the subtlety of HM's hidden powers that she doesn't use. Yes, she has a lot of power but it's the fact that she doesn't use it that makes it more powerful. I was young when she was crowned, I remember the day well because I was confined to bed with German measles. I now see her getting old and becoming unwell and feel a little concerned with who will replace her when the time comes. As to keeping out of politics, yes, she does, unlike a certain "royal couple" who live in the US that have lied and dealt a great deal of hurt to the royal family with their lies and antics. They haven't harmed the royal family, only themselves and most people here dislike them immensely. There are a few anti royalists in the UK but they are few, most of understand her pace in the British constitution and respect it.
Hi you should check out the english civil war, the restoration of monarchy to understand more about shift of power. Also Henry viii and the break from catholicism formation of the church of England. This should help in understanding monarchs constitutional position today. Its more complex than the two points of historical change above but its a start. Hope thats usefull.

In regards to all criminal law the Monarch is above the Law, mainly because all proposed laws have to be given what is called Royal Assent, after which it will become a law. Also the higher courts are called Crown courts, so it would be the Crown vs the Crown, however the Monarch is not immune to being taken to a civil court.

The Australian prime minister Gough Whitlam, was sacked by the Queen's representative in Australia however, the Queen knew nothing about it until after. But technically and legally, the Queen sacked Whitlam.

If the united Kingdom was ever in a real tragedy or seriously troubled times to a level where Her Majesty the Queen feels a need to intervene, I have no doubt that the people, military, police and alike would follow her leadership before any politician. We all know most politicians are corrupt with there own petty interest but if we were against the wall as a country we would support our great Queen if she ever felt the need to.
I actually believe she should be given the title of Queen Elizabeth the Great as she has been an outstanding Queen and monarch to her people over her 70 years of service, I cant think of anyone who posses such powers but acts so honourably for such a length of time.

I'm English & I've never even thought about her being immune from prosecution... I suppose she's above the law because she would be prosecuting herself (would make for an interesting case). The judiciary acts on behalf of The Crown.
Completely true, my bothers best mate is a barrister, he said many years ago that the Judge in the crown court exercises the powers of the queen or the crown, so in brief if she walked into one of her crown courts and a Judge even attempted to pass judgement on her the law states they should immediately be arrested for contempt of court and imprisoned immediately with length of sentence to be decided by the queen herself which could be anything she wanted.
This has never happened and probably never will, but there has been drafts and discussions by legal experts in the crown court behind closed doors it would probably be 30 days incarceration and Permanente removal of any involvement in the British courts and all titles removed permanently for judging against HRH as one of her Judges.
Her power nowadays is what is often referred to as "soft power" but nonetheless effective and substantial.

We vote for a Candidate who represents a political party at a local level to become a Member of Parliament (MP) The leader of the political party with the majority of MP's is summond to the Palace for an audience with Her Majesty, the Queen congratulates the Leader on winning the election asks him or her if they can form a Government if the answer is yes she appoints them as Prime Minister. A lot of Brits and Americans think she lives a fairytale lifestyle and is just a figurehead. Every day of her life except Christmas Day and Easter Day, she receives red boxes of state of paperwork which needs her approval including new laws. The Queen's recent health problems which she stayed overnight in hospital, she has been ordered to rest and only do light duties. So at the age of 95, she has cancelled all her engagements involving travel, including hosting COP26 climate change in Glasgow. The light duties is still dealing with the daily red boxes, and using Zoom to virtually receive new ambassadors and present awards.
