The executioners sword is rounded at the end because thats how real ones were made. If you pointed an executioners sword it would just bend or get stuck whenever it hit the wood executioners stands
He's correct. Headsmen's swords were actually not terribly sharp, but they were quite heavy - particularly at the end away from the hilt. That imbalance improved the executioner's aim and the weight increased the speed of the sword stroke. It was considered an honor to be executed by sword, rather than axe. Axes were regarded as a commoner's tool, while swords had always been the symbol of nobility. Fun fact: professional, skilled executioners were quite rare. Most were simply commoners, pressed into service. They were drawn from a sort of pool of those willing to do the work. Cromwell was so unpopular by the time he was executed, his enemies at court intentionally chose a known drunkard as his executioner. The guy showed up, stinking of booze and scarcely able to stand. It took him about a half dozen swings to take Cromwell's head.

Of Henry VIII's wives, Anne of Cleves--the one he liked the least--ironically came out the most ahead. When Henry rejected her, instead of fighting for herself she simply agreed to keep quiet and do anything that Henry wanted if he'd give her a decent manor and payout. Henry was happy to get out of the marriage with such little trouble, and Anne lived the rest of her life in luxurious comfort.
@@JamesCornwall95 idk what is, but as an American, just absolutely love the Tudor period. The war of the roses, the Tudors and Stuart's, then Cromwell, then charles ii and then glorious revolution, just so entertaining. Its game of thrones but in real life. Lannister and stark aka Lancaster vs york
I used to play Total War and yeah, it's a bitch to get excommunicated. Now I only play Europa Universalis. It doesn't suck as much to get excommunicated there, but it still does suck. But you typically solve it the way Henry did: "F U, Pope..."; and just convert to something else.
The battle Catherine of Aragon oversaw while Henry was away was a slaughter, just a complete annihilation of the Scottish army. Weird when your wife scores a military victory that puts yours to shame in such a way.
16:23 you should check out "The Tudors" on Netflix, it basically sums up Henry's life as king... there's a quote that goes "SHE LOOKS LIKE A HORSE! A FLANDERS MARE! I LIKE HER NOT!" (referring to Anne of Cleves) tbh I thought the actress who portrayed Anne of Cleves was quite pretty but Henry still divorced her and married a freaking CHILD (Katherine Howard, whom I disliked the most😒)
When I used to play Medieval 2 total War I used to leave an assassin in Rome that kept assassinating the Pope. Then I put the Papal States in Baghdad as soon as the mongols were invading it was hilarious.
Great reaction! Just a side note ... wasn't the execution of Sir Thomas More the one that Henry regretted most? I thought he was cool with killing Cromwell.
Hey, the Total War games are some of my favorites. As for "Medieval", if you are at odds with the pope, just invade some muslim countries. This had helped me a lot. And it also works in reality. Not a single US President was ever excomunicated by the pope.
Yes, Elizabeth R was a selfish woman. Being well-educated, she knew all too well about the horrible toll that Civil War took on the British people, and she DID NOT CARE. Instead of getting married and producing an heir, she SELFISHLY refused to marry and KNOWING that upon her death her nation would most likely be plunged into Civil War once more. Her mother, Anne, was also ambitious and put herself and her goals before what was best for England. We need to remember that women getting involved in politics is NEVER a good idea.

Theory about Anne of Cleves was it was less about her being 'ugly' and more about Henry having impotence and realizing a marriage would reveal that.
Opened RUclips, saw the title, and went “oh this should be interesting”
😂😂I had too
Executioner's swords were purposefully shaped like that to make them more top heavy and thus likely to get the job done with one swing.
I just opened this and will watch it, but already LMAO @ "English Peasant" in the title
The only way to do it 😂😂

Well “he’s a fine specimen of a man” and “he’s not gonna drop dead from Covid” are pretty different contexts.
To be fair, the same doctors say Biden is of "sound mind". I'll take him over orange man anyday, but let's not kid ourselves here.
