Uriah Heep Albums Ranked

  • Since I've been acquiring a few more Uriah Heep albums, I thought I'd check the Internet to see how people rank the albums. I use those rankings along with reviews to help me choose what albums to check out and what albums I should approach with caution.
    In this video, I present the average ranking of the first 24 studio albums of Uriah Heep. The average was derived from totaling up the ranks of each album from ten lists and dividing that total by 10. Two of the lists were top ten lists, so albums not on those lists on those lists (as it happens it was the same ten albums just in slightly different order) had their totals divided by eight.

    really enjoyed this - thanks 🙂
    I saw Heep in 1980 and again last year. They did a two-set show, opening with an hour or so of acoustic numbers and then a really very rocking main set. They still rock and could teach many young bands a thing or two!!
    Their latest album "Chaos & Colour" is well worth a listen. I got the vinyl edition and I think that sounds even better. The production is next level.
    My top 5 pretty well mirrors yours (like so many other people I guess!). Thanks again for all the work putting this together 🙂

      I filled a lot of gaps in my Uriah Heep collection after this video and I’m down to missing four albums. Yes, the new album is great, and I have in mind to do a video about the Bernie Shaw/Phil Lanzon Heep albums. It might not be til next year, but I’ve had the playlist on my phone since July!
      It’s great to hear an old band like this continue to put our quality albums.

      As I think I mentioned, my cousin really recommended those two albums. I like some songs from Sea of Light, but having recently picked up Sonic Origami, I can understand his enthusiasm for the album. Considering the albums to come after Abominog, I can see how these two could get you back into the band.

    • @bjornjagerlund3793
      @bjornjagerlund3793 Год назад +2

      Thanks for the answer. I never liked Abominog and the albums from the eighties. To me, Uriah Heep came back to be Uriah Heep with the album Sea of light and I rank that album and Sonic Origami to be on the same level as the Byron albums. Perhaps you can skip a few songs to make the albums better. There are at least ten really good songs on each album.
      I agree about which 4 albums to be the worst and the best, but rank the albums in between different. It’s of course all about musical taste when it comes to those albums, but I much prefer the later albums before High and Mighty and the albums that came after that up to Different World.
      Strange that Different World and Raging Silence are so bad. These albums has the same line up and songwriters as the later much better albums. There’s nothing on these two albums that brings any hope that Uriah Heep could be relevant again. But luckily they did. I like the album Chaos and Colour a lot, by the way.
      Thank you fot the time you spent putting this list together.

      @@bjornjagerlund3793 It’s interesting to see when I compile these ranking lists how the middle ranked albums are ordered. Usually the top five and bottom five are consistent in most lists, but the middle albums usually float around.
      I think bands that go through unstable lineups simultaneously go through a period of albums of questionable choices. The eighties were especially difficult for bands from the early seventies. Listening to others talk about bands of the seventies, it seems that many bands struggled to find themselves in the eighties but re-established themselves around the mid-nineties. Meanwhile, many bands from the eighties struggled in the nineties.
      Thank you for sharing your opinions and watching the video. I enjoy reading others’ comments because I am glad when someone points out something I hadn’t considered and I can revisit an album and find something new to appreciate about it.

    I’m way too young to really see any of the Uriah Heep eras… But I recently got into Uriah Heep through A-ha’s lead singer Morten Harket. I started with Wonderworld and loved the title track and I slowly started to work back into the early 70s and Heep are now my go to band. There’s something about the band and from what I understand they were almost second to none in the early 70s as a live band. I still lean heavily towards Wonderworld as my favorite Heep album with Look At Yourself a close second. Salisbury the track is a standout just because of Mick’s guitar work. Great video long live Heep! appy’ days.

    I am a life long Heepster. I basically didn't like any of the 80's albums featuring Peter Goalby. The band was in a state of flux with memberhsip chnages and, as you say, they went too over the top to be an 80's metal band (including teased hair!). The Bernie Shaw era got off to a rocky start, but they've been flying high ever since. I also enjoyed the John Lawton era and of course, the David Byron era. I was a 16 year old when that first started.

    • @musicisajourney
      @musicisajourney  Год назад

      I think the eighties were very rough on those seventies bands. You had guys in their mid-thirties trying to look like the new guys in their early twenties. They had a sound and a fan base for that sound, but they had to try to sound relevant for the times and it was just not natural for most bands. It sounded forced just as the look was also awkward.
      I now have all the Shaw/Lanzon albums and I agree with you. Those first two albums sound to me like a Christian rock band. But they improved up to Sonic Origami. The last five albums have all been solid if not a little too similar. There’s not as much variety on an album as there was in the seventies.

      Before I go, I enjoyed your review. And if you want a blast from the past, check out Hungarian cover band Heep Freedom. They specialize in Byron era Heep and are very, very good. Cheers!

    Enjoyed this video but I’ve come to understand the low ranking of HIGH N MIGHTY which is my favourite. I remember when bestie and I bought it back in 76, it took us a lot of listens to get into it - it had the Steely Dan feel about it. We were rewarded because after persevering for over a dozen listens the album just hit us both and it’s remained my favourite to this day, just slightly ahead of Demons. Side 1 of HNM to me is the greatest side of music - 4 incredibly put together songs. Side B is just brilliant as well. I would encourage everyone to flog that album and you will eventually get it. Flogging all the others has not helped and no matter how many times I’ve played Fallen Angel, it’s never grabbed me. Own all the albums by the way and have thoroughly enjoyed the last few. July Morning annoys me just like Child in Time by DP. I’ve seen the band many times in concert over the last 5 decades and I must say while I never saw Byron, Golby was phenomenal live.

      I always love it when someone champions an underdog album.
      I played it on RUclips once. After the first two or three songs I couldn’t understand why it got such a low ranking. But side two put me off it right away. Most of the songs were not to my taste. But if I can ever find it on CD for a reasonable price, I will still buy it. And then I can give it another chance or three.

      @@musicisajourney unfortunately it’s one of those albums that does not reward you until after 20 listens but every listen after that is just so enjoyable. I’ve played all the Byron albums well over 50 times each but it’s only HNM and possibly the two Roger Dean ones that I put up there with the great albums. I honestly love every second of HNM - it actually gives me the same pleasure as listening to AJA by Steely Dan. Love your comment re the underdog album. I can't really argue with your statistical analysis of other ranking lists, but I disagree about a few of them......To me, Salisbury is junk and belongs near the back with Conquest, But all of the Lawton and Goalby era albums belong ahead of virtually all the Bernie Shaw Albums....Of those, I like Sea of Light, Sonic Origami and Livin the Dream and certain songs from every album..... I have all 25 and have to say that certain albums are a hard listen at first, but grow on you, so I can understand non- Heep- collectors not being impressed with certain albums.....I'd put Demons and Wizards at third or farther back behind the other two of your top three.... Interestingly, the first through third albums feature the awesome bass work of Paul Newton, who threw down the bass blueprint that every bass player after him adhered to....

    • @musicisajourney
      @musicisajourney  10 месяцев назад

      Hi, Don! Thanks for your comment about the ranking and the albums. I always enjoy it when someone has a fresh take on an album or discography. I mean, I’ve always loved Salisbury and that’s likely because it was the first Heep album I bought. It’s not my favourite, but I quite like it. I think it was Martin Popoff who had a low opinion about Salisbury. I can agree that if it’s not your thing, it is a tough album to take.
      Musically, creatively, I think the Lawton albums are very good even though the heavy tracks are few. Abominog I’ve always thought had great variety. Head First was not so thrilling though for me. I think all the Shaw/Lanzon albums have some good songs and except for the first two, the sound is very good. But it’s true that I am looking for the two or three standout tracks on each album where all the rest is rather the same.
      Yes, I’m glad you cared to share your thoughts on the albums that you think are good because such opinions always make me think to give those albums another listen if I don’t care for them much.
      In the end, I appreciate a variety of opinions. I think it’s what makes a catalogue lively and interesting.
      Oh, and nice to see Paul Newton singled out. Gary Thain is always talked about as though he was always the best bass player they had. Good to see Mr. Newton get a shoutout.

      That's a cool list. I'm surprised to see Conquest there. Though I've never heard it, it gets a lot of bashing. Same with High and Mighty. I only recently encountered someone who said it is such a great album. But that's what makes connecting with people over bands so interesting. When someone holds high an album others don't like much, I get curious and want to listen again. I like the last few Shaw/Lanzon albums, though two things against them are that there is little variety in style and I don't think Bernie is a particularly original singer. His voice is very generic. But the band can still rock out heavily.
