      IT Works 3d is a subsidiary of Lulzbot. You can get official refusbished Taz 6's for $2k, Taz 5's for $1350.....great option if you're on a budget but really want a TAZ.
      You could also look at the Lulzbot Mini if you don't need the build volume but you want the Lulzbot reliability and support.

    Glad to see you liked the TAZ 6. I have had one now for about 8 months and have had it running nearly 24/7. My only real issue is the PEI surface, which I had to replace. I followed the instructions online to the letter, but the replacements would not stay stuck to the glass plate. I finally tried burnishing the PEI sheet on the heated bed after initial install and seem to have gotten good adhesion this time around. I would love to know if others have encountered this issue. Otherwise, it's a fantastic printer.

    • @3DPrintingNerd
      @3DPrintingNerd  7 лет назад +1

      Oh interesting. I haven't had it long enough to need to replace the PEI sheet, but, I know down the line if I get to keep using this, I'm going to need to replace it at some point and remember this comment.

      @AndyboyH 7 лет назад +1

      bravohuey would it not just be worth trying a biiiig Buildtak sheet on it? Tried both that and lokbuild recently and so long as you level well it seems to do a really good job of keeping prints staying stuck :)

    Good review, Joel. I'm a big fan of the Lulzbot and AlephObjects, especially as they're such huge advocates of open source. They walk the walk.
    So, I had a fun time demoing with MakerArm at SXSW today, but I didn't see hide nor hair of Josef or I'd have given him a proper high-five (and not let go of his ankle till he tossed me an MK2 to develop Marlin on!).
    In your review you mentioned the "old antiquated" UI. Well, the Lulzbot ships with Marlin installed (version 1.0.2-2, I believe). Happily, as time goes on newer versions of Marlin will continue to totally support this machine, and the next version (1.1.0, still in pre-release) does have some nice improvements (better support for the graphical display, improved filament-change, etc.). We haven't done a huge amount of work on the UI but there have been some good tweaks and additions. Of course, you'll still have to use the old push-knob to control the machine, but that's a limitation of the LCD controller they use.
    For a total revamp of the user interface, MagoKimbra (Alberto Cotronei) has published a version of Marlin that can interface with the Nextion touch screen, so that's one possible upgrade route if you want a nice touch UI. I'd recommend waiting till after the 1.1 release if you do decide to try it out. So many things have been fixed… and broken… and re-fixed…

    • @3DPrintingNerd
      @3DPrintingNerd  7 лет назад

      I was reaching when I said old and antiquated, heh. Yeah, I think that is the verion they ship with, and it works. It's just... plain. That's it. Great to hear you had fun demoing with MakerArm! Were people really receptive to seeing it?

    • @ScottLahteine
      @ScottLahteine 7 лет назад

      I hear you about the "plainness." It's what some might call "ctional" (i.e., functional without the "fun"). As for the MakerArm, it always turns a few heads. We were demo-ing the CNC toolhead today, and it went smoothly. Which is good, because I was working on the firmware till the 11th hour. Whew!

    Hi Joel, great video as always. Didn't you mention in another video that you were going to say something about the Taz 6 that you haven't said about another 3d printer? Did I miss this?

    • @3DPrintingNerd
      @3DPrintingNerd  7 лет назад

      I did! I said "go buy it". Usually I'll be very calm about whether someone should buy a machine, and I just give my approval or disapproval, but in this one, I said directly to buy it. In an email to Lulzbot, I asked to keep it, and said I would pay for it with my own money :)

    Yay! The final review!
    The DO have great customer service. I had a clogged nozzle that had to do with a problem of filament leaking out of the side of the tool head, I sent my faulty tool head in, they sent me back a working tool head, they were pretty responsive over the phone, and, they wouldn't know me from Adam.
    The point is Maybe it is possible that Joel got good service because of his popularity on RUclips and that people listen to his opinion, but do not step it up for nobodies like me... but that is Not the case!
    If I could have anything improved or different:
    - Wifi printing would be nice! :)
    - The display really does not show status in a way that makes sense to me.
    - Even though the print will finish, their version of Cura will lock up on me on my MacBook Pro and I have to regularly Force Quit it...
    - Oh, and when the print is done in Cura, it turns the heat on the nozzle off, but not on the print bed... S3D works properly and turns it off... BTW, S3D has not frozen on me with this printer!
    But I do Love this printer... all the different filaments you can use, the many presets in their version of Cura for different filaments is great!
    My Z-axis was making a bunch of noise, but I put some lube on it like Joel suggested, and the noise is all gone. Thanks 3DPN!

    • @3DPrintingNerd
      @3DPrintingNerd  7 лет назад

    Any chance you can add a hard caption with layer settings in your videos when you show us the prints?
    Was really keen on a Taz 6, but that maker coin looked like it had some issues with layers and retraction, but wasn't sure whether it was due to being printed at a particular Z height. So now I'm still on the fence between that, a Raise N2, a BCN Sigma, or just going for a Form2 to complement my Zortrax, Ulti2 and Robox...

    • @3DPrintingNerd
      @3DPrintingNerd  7 лет назад

      That's a really good suggestion, I should do that! Thank you! As for the maker coin, it was printed at 0.25mm layers and a low infill (which is why the top had a couple bumps. Which part of the coin did you think had layer and retraction issues? I can go grab it in a bit and take a closer look.

    • @AndyboyH
      @AndyboyH 7 лет назад

      3D Printing Nerd
      That would be awesome! Thanks! *high five*
      I think it may be how it handled a 250 micron layer height? Looks like the inner part of the D (not a dick joke, honest lol) was some bad stepping, possibly even peeling a little, and there seemed to be some slubs/blogging of over extrusion or something near the outer edge? Not sure though? The rocket model definitely didn't show the same problems so wasn't sure if it was just down to settings?
      Out of the 3 - Sigma, Raise N2 or Taz 6, which would you go for?

    • @3DPrintingNerd
      @3DPrintingNerd  7 лет назад

      Right now, I would choose a TAZ6 over the Raise3D just from current experience. I have a new Sigma en route, and I'll be able to speak more about that once I get some time on it. If it performs as well as they say it should, it's going to be a contender for sure.

    So, this printer seems to operate at a very high level, but it is comparable with the Prusa i3 MK2 that I built, so what is the difference between the and why is one so much more expensive? If there is any way you could compare the 2 that would be really cool to see. Also, if the comparison could include the Ultimaker 3 (which I believe is on par with the Prusa i3 MK2) that would be very informative and helpful!!!

      We all have to get started somewhere. As long as you realize what's good and what's not good, you'll get it rocking, then you'll upgrade and get THAT one going, THEN before you know it you'll have 20 printers! Though, for 150, there are other options out there known to be good. Check out PRESSRESET, The JAT.MN and Maker's Muse!

    I'm really curious to see how it does on ABS. I suspect not very well as it is missing an enclosure. Nylon also does much better with an enclosure.
    I'm really surprised that a $2500 printer is missing the $20 or so worth of clear plastic required to construct an enclosure. Unless it comes with an enclosure that I missed? Maybe nobody else prints as much ABS as I do.

    • @3DPrintingNerd
      @3DPrintingNerd  7 лет назад +1

      Most i3 machines don't come with an enclosure, and manufacturers leave it up to the user or 3rd parties to create enclosures for the machines. Printed Solid carries a line of enclosures for Lulzbot machines - if I can get one, I'll put it on and test out ABS for you. I've heard from others who HAVE enclosed their TAZ6 that ABS prints just fine.

    • @skbigelo

    They say that the lulzbot taz is the #1 printer, but if you buy one, you may be sorry, I purchased the lulzbot taz workhorse about 6 months ago, it worked good for about 6 weeks, I have been working with their tech support for several months now, they have tried everything possible to rectify the problems it has with calibration, until this day they have no resolution, and I am out of $3,000.00 spent on the printer, and the $1,000.00 I spent on printing materials, is just catching dust. Looks like I am going to have to take civil action to get my money back because I do not want anymore of their printers

  • @CementRoots
    @CementRoots 7 лет назад

    is it just me when I see these "buy" printers like this, all i can think of is how easy this would be a DIY project for a fraction of the price... but I personally do think the TAZ great looking machines.... but, but, easily replicated.... like the prusa
    isnt 3D printing part of being in the Tinkerer, Maker, Hacker hobby??.... unless your going to be a 3D print retailer...LOL... sorry that always makes me laugh ..... anyway,.... maybe it is just me.... maybe I'm just cheap, or do I embrace the hobby as a whole? .... as for customer support... when you make it yourself, you yourself are the support.... in the end its just a plastic squirter...
    thats my opinion on the subject...

    • @3DPrintingNerd
      @3DPrintingNerd  7 лет назад

      The Lulzbot printers are total DIY machines, I think their cost goes towards the components, the assembly, and the support system. If someone gets one of these, maybe it'll turn them towards a kit for their next machine?

    • @CementRoots
      @CementRoots 7 лет назад

      to me its is solely the price...same with the prusa at $700.... the component used are not made from anything that couldn't be replicated, plastic, aluminum, stainless steel.... the hardest part to get if you wanted it, is the specialty bed .... but then again I'v never has a problem with the cheap chinese beds
      and really support is the internet, and the parts are so cheap, having to replace a part is a no brainer
      when these machine are seen for the first time , people are overwhelmed by its magical properties
      once the honeymoon is over tho, its broken down into a few simple steps it moves around and pumps out plastic like a glue gun.... personally I think it comes down to understand the slicing software... thats what makes or breaks the prints in the end.... and its not just having a fancy software, its know how to use it and tune it properly ..... so in the end scratch building a quality machine for around $150 and really learning the software will give the same results then any plastic melting printer you can buy.... again the is my own opinion

    • @OU81TWO
      @OU81TWO 7 лет назад +1

      +CementRoots I agree with what you're saying but the $150 excludes your time which has value even though you're not accounting for it. If you decide to build one from scratch log all of your hours just for fun. Assign a dollar amount to every hour you spend on the project (...the same hourly rate that you earn at your job for example) and total it up at the end. When I say every hour I'm not just talking assembly. I'm talking about every single hour that is devoted specifically to the project (planning, designing, ordering parts, printing parts, etc)
      I'm willing to bet the real cost for your scratch build will be in the thousands.

Respect and really like Joel, but that just seemed like a self serving fluff piece for the chance of a free printer..

    • @3DPrintingNerd
      @3DPrintingNerd  7 лет назад +6

      Awww sad. I don't get to keep it, and I sent off an email to Lulzbot asking if I could just purchase it with my own money. I'm sorry the videos didn't show off what I thought to be great print quality. I really didn't produce this to be self service or to be begging for a machine - the part in the video was meant as a joke and, thankfully, Lulzbot took it that way. I'm sure I could get even better quality out of it by tuning the machine and playing around with the settings. What I was producing came from stock settings, and I truly thought they looked good. I can try to get you some close-up photos, or if you give me specific spots to look for when I get back to the machine and models tonight I can take a look.
