Funny thing about that Horna issue: When they played in LA and the whole antifa shutdown thing happened, they wound up playing in a different outdoor location and sold it out. The "outrage" essentially just pushed them into a larger venue and they made more money.

This is a great video. Kudos for making it. I saw this topic floating around and the vast majority of the videos and comments surrounding it were completely worthless. It was either "SJWs are ruining metal!" or "Here a Nazi, there a Nazi, everywhere a Nazi Nazi." Both takes are just plain stupid. It's mind boggling that next to no one can sit down with the topic and discuss it rationally. I don't make videos like this anymore cuz the moronic responses (as you can see in the comments of this video) get super tiring. There's a few things here
    1) Difference between lyrical content explicitly promoting and advocating on behalf of neo-nazism/bigotry, and one or more members possibly having such worldviews but the music they produce not exhibiting it.
    2) Many people will say "well musicians and artists are allowed to have private beliefs shouldn't affect what they make and how it's perceived" to a point yes but many many people will draw the line when it comes to beliefs that involve hating entire groups of humanity, wanting them dead or to suffer. That's not really "a difference in opinion" like about ideal marginal tax rate for corporate dividends or something. It's way more primal.
    3) Yes due to social media it's very easy for ignorant "mobs" to take shape and "shame" and "accuse" various targets. It can be a lot harder to go into a longer more nuanced explanation but it's very simple to simply shout slogans and call names, and it gets teenagers, and lower-informed folks on your side, giving you a huge mass of people who will attack the target. It's a definite problem in our age

I think helping to create an environment that engenders transparency and dialog about musicians, their actions, and connections is important, and is a fundamental part of giving people the opportunity to make informed decisions about the media they consume.
The normalization of fascism, crypto-fascism, antisemitism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, and other forms of bigotry within metal is not okay, and that's why we need to normalize conversations about them.
I regularly have dialog with people who don't understand, or haven't even heard about, the criticism people levelled at people like Mikko Aspa, Jason Jordan Weirbach, Mikołaj Żentara, or Rob Miller.
    I think that's wild.

I think what the majority of people missed from the Banger piece, and it was easy to miss because the point wasn't stated rationally, is not that DSO are an NS band, but that because the members are seemingly kosher with the presence of a known figure within the white power in black metal movement that everyone else is guilty of complicity. As a rational adult, I realize that not everything within culture or music is black and white but in today's international political climate, being complicit is just as bad as being the actual perpetrator of fascist ideas. People can rant and rave all day about how they're mature enough to separate art from the artist, but in my experience as soon as someone's "art" contains politics of ANY type, it becomes propaganda. I'll also be the first to admit that my collection definitely contains leftist propaganda, if that's the definition that I've settled on, but I'm okay with that because it aligns with my own belief system. But again, as a rational adult, I don't go out of my way to make villains out of people that do think it's totally cool to dig NSBM beyond urging them to look further than the riffs and really weigh the impact and import of what they're consuming, and to take second looks at the sources for their consumption.

Too many people calling people sjw's and then you've got the other side calling everyone Nazi's it's stupid. Just because someone listens to a band that has a racist asshole in it doesn't mean they're a Nazi and just because someone doesn't listen to a band for that exact reason it doesn't make them a sjw. I personally don't care what the members of bands believe in or have done because that's not why I listen to the music. I listen to the music for the music not because I believe in what the members are singing about or personally believe in. I listen to bands like Der Sturmer and such but does that mean I believe in what that music is saying or what those members believe in? No I certainly don't. This crap going on with shows being shut down is straight stupid though. If you don't like what one of the members of the band believes in just don't go. Don't try and get the whole show shutdown and ruin it for everyone else.

I've always found it very easy to separate what I know and perceive about a band or artist from the type of music they release. I think it's incredibly ignorant to not like past music by a band just because you found out something disturbing about them later. If you like something you like it and I don't feel you should be having to make excuses, especially to yourself, as to why you no longer like it. At the end of the day though people are fickle and will turn on you over the smallest of things. Especially if you don't match up to the ideas they have of you in their mind. Once they acknowledge you don't you instantly end up on the discard pile. Differences are what make the world go around. As long as you make good music I will admit you are good at your craft. How you are outside the studio is your own business and should be thought apart and separate.

Really, really appreciate this video, man. Too many people just get way too intense about these things (as you should, when it comes to fascism), but the major point that you touched upon is that it's a personal choice what you do. I solute your choice about Horna as well. The most effective way to tell musicians and bands with ideologies that you disagree with to fuck off, is to just not support them. Sure, they might still tour and make records, but they're not getting your dollar, and that's what counts. If others want to support them, let them.

Also, Horna was Doxed because of Shatraug, who's a hefty Finnish man who advocated some Ns stuff on his old label (Ravendark, Hammer "Shoax" etc) and, much like Mikko Aspa, has produced/created some RAC-inspired records (Blutschrei, Finnentum) And marketed and advertised these releases as "NS" if for nothing else than to sell records. Art is art, many artists use images or lyrics that shock people to stay relevant in a certain genre, sell more albums etc. And I really don't see what difference it makes if a member of a band has certain beliefs or ideologies, especially if it doesn't come across in the music. People are becoming way to knit picky and sensitive about things. If I were to only consume art that I had to research every little belief and ideology of the artist and only enjoy it if it matched mine then I'm sure I would miss out on a lot of great things. I think people should be free to support whatever they like and art should be left uncensored. Also Everyone should be able to be proud of their heritage and be able to express it in their art without being labeled as racist, but sadly it has come to that, I don't hear a rap song where the artist is expressing pride about their heritage and automatically think that they are racist, hate all white people, and probably part of some black militant group.

@@MrPepepe666 One thing is artistic imagination and one thing is reality. Cannibal Corpse talk about raping dead children but they certainly don't really think it's right, the same is true for many other bands that say horrible things in their lyrics but don't really think so. On the other hand, some black metal bands don't talk about those things only for artistic reasons but also to spread their ideas. They really think that Hitler was a hero and that Europeans are superior (or whatever other bullshit they think). Obviously I don't care and I listen to them anyway, but the fact remains that morally they have horrible ideas.

As an avid black metal fan, this entire "cancel culture" movement really affects what you base your life around when everything you enjoy is being attacked. Some greivences with these bands are justified and other complaints are a reach. It's almost like people seek the "gold star" from the antifa peanut gallery if you spot the wrong-doer (according to their code) and go on a moral superiority tirade about it. It annoys the hell out of me. You summed up exactly how I feel about this subject. Calling anyone a nazi just diminishes the weight of the claim. It's like a virtue signaling "boy who cried wolf" scenario. Policing people's thoughts is fascism, plain and simple. It's hard to separate the love you have for bands (over years, as you mentioned) and write it off for good, especially if its secondhand bandwagon driven information. Some things are blatantly wrong, where others are subjective. We can't force anyone to agree with the same feelings we have ourselves and that'sthe main problem here.

My friends and I would buy records and share/trade them with each other. Who ever was the "richest" could burn copies for the group Lol. My claim to fame was discovering Opeth's Blackwater Park for our group around the time it was released. First Emperor record I bought I hated, then around 17 I gave it another spin, "got it", and it was all black metal from there. Borknagar, Arcturus, Ulver, all of those bands came flooding in. The only download options were track by track on Limewire, and you would have to know what to search for first, so buying records were a lot more likely. Has anyone else caught on to the Doogy Houser theme in your openings? Nice touch Lol

I guess I'm on the "SJW" side of this issue cuz I actually thought it was really funny when banger just straight up mocked Deathspell for it's associations when bands with said associations constantly fly by the radar and continue making money. I also watched Wyatt's video and I gotta say, I'm not very compelled by a Deathspell fan with a Deathspell flag in the background assuring me that it's stupid to care about the fact that the singer of a band is into snuff and shock-value Nazism cuz he's just the singer and the other two guys do most of the work. That said, I agree with you that nobody is under any obligation to throw out their CDs and it isn't fair to call someone a Nazi because they have a sketchy artist in their collection. Artists that thousands of people listen to have always had moral failings that people have been able to condemn while still appreciating their music. The real problem is that often these moral failings go un-called out while that artist is still making money and shoring up celebrity influence. Nobody is perfect so the fact that whenever an artist being REALLY not perfect is pointed out, most people's reaction is to fly off the handle on twitter about "wokeness" and "cancel culture" is much more a testament to the power celebrity artists have over our perception of the world than it is actual proof of a woke mob. I've litterally seen people in FB groups dedicated to anti-fascism in underground music do backflips arguing that Faust must regret committing a hate crime because he went to jail for it, in my opinion simply to justify listening to and gushing over Emperor. My byline would really be the same as yours, be as conscious as possible about what artists you support, with the caveat that you should always be honest about that artist's major ethical failings.

Btw it's subjective opinion when it comes from your point of view, it's not informative unless you have facts or sources to back it up. Obviously bangertv or metalinjection and all these others don't have facts unless they have a direct quote or comment from the artist claiming they are in fact associated with NS. Honestly, being a nationalist isn't bad, the only time I stop supporting a artist is when they are guilty and charged with child abuse, pedophilia.
