- It's time to get pumped again on this car! I started this Mild Kustom build a little over a year ago with great intentions, but my follow through kind of petered out. Let me know what you think. I really want the old Merc back on the road and turning heads.

You sir have a very diverse automotive palette. I appreciate that.
Thanks! I like them all
Just pullin ur leg. Im a hot rodder. Once in your blood, no turning back. Something about the sound of a hot engine makes me smile. Love em.
Pretty sure the drug houses in your neck of the woods have Subarus parked in front of them, not slammed galaxies….
True.
Thats all right, we are all learning.
Thanks for sharing.
Always learning!
Dude thank you for working so hard, I use your videos for motivation when I don't wanna work on my own junk. You're a legend.
Thanks for watching. Now go work on your junk
' this is the problem with a big shop ... you accumulate stuff ' ... lol so true
Too much junk
Glad to see the cameo on MotorTrend but your content on RUclips is killing it.
Much appreciated. I am enjoying it as well
Ha! I recognized that frame when you opened the hood up... nice.
Good eye
Yay I found Dave!! The only reason to have that awful MT subscription. My favorite fabricator by far, no drama, just making neat stuff.
Thanks for stopping by
Really cool project, something different!
Thank you
You and I share the same taste in vehicles, thats the big reason I love this channel.
Right on. Glad to have you here
@@thedirtheadshed im super excited to see the Nissan finally back on the road
The motor bit at the end was hilarious.
Dude. I was exhausted. It has roller rockers, stamped steel ones. I had blue billets in my mind
Dang it I want that 312!!! I’m building a ‘55 Ford Mainline 2 door post. 👍🏻. love the Merc. Killer project.
Nice! I’m keeping it around. Just not for this car
I can relate! Real is awesome!
Thanks! Keeping it real
In the 1960s we had a matching pair white and turquoise hardtop and 9 passenger wagon. Both were 312 and really bulletproof transmission, on my brother's practice done this car and the trick was to rev it up all the way and low then shifted to drive and back to low that would achieve second gear well at work great unless you shifted too far and went into reverse which my brother did and man I nearly went through the windshield and was bending over backwards for a second there. Those were the days we had that 9 passenger wagon for sale 4 weeks, then reduce the price to $125 it was straight it was a decent car and ran fine we just got a new one
Ahh the old ford-o-matic. I had one in my 58 mercury as well
I notice Tumtum is near you,who wouldn't want that!
Thanks.
That’s such a cool spot
Gonna be rescuing a 51 Mercury for a friend in a few weeks. Been sitting 20+ years and he is facing some health challenges. I want to get him on our local cruise while it's still an option. Car Therapy is the best and even in spite of everything all he talks about is getting to drive that car.
Sounds like a good goal to hace
Dave, you had me thinking I was losing my mind, when the valve cover was off I swore I could see the rollers on the rocker arms. I even took a screen shot and zoomed in and saw them. Then you realized they were and I felt better haha
Yeah… my brain remembered seeing billet ones in there.. could not comprehend
Very cool car build.
Thank you
Keep on.. keepin on fella!
I’m am!
Oh, great to see Dave again
Thanks for watching
Just watched the full video, that thing is gonna be bad ass! As more of a car guy, I might have to follow this...
Love all your vehicles Dirthead Dave!!
Thanks! It’s a good fleet
Rebuilt y blocks are nice with streight pipes😊 sick batmobile
They are cool engines. And do sound good
I always like the 1956 Mercury. I could have bought a 4 door original owner back in 1985 off this old lady for $800 but I couldn't come up with money in time. My friend bought it before I could come up with the money. $800 was a lot of money for a 16 year old kid in 1985 could have barrow off my Pop's but I would have paid out working for him way over $800.
Good old family Interest rates
Rock on! You know way more squat than I do.
Thanks!?
Great car looking forward to seeing it around (I live in Central Washington)
Can’t wait to drive it
Love this car. Can’t wait to see next video on it.
Oh man. Me too!!
Base models are the best to start with they are a clean slate to do exactly what you want with them
True that
I had one too! In 1965, I had a ‘56 Montclair with a lot of rust and a bad transmission. My brother in law had a Medalist with a good body, but a blown engine. We took the Montclair engine and put it in the Medalist. Had it until I shipped off to Marine Corps Boot Camp Parris Island. Since my pay was $89/month, couldn’t afford a car, so I sold it. Wish I had it now.
Thanks for your service! Sounds like some good old cars
Nice work, Dave!
Thank you
Holy moley!! I love your content. First time I saw you was when Paul from Fab rats ran into you on the trail and you were driving that sick Mazda.
Been watching ever since! Don't work too hard and get some rest.
Much appreciated! I will chill out eventually
Love the look on the Merc I have a 56 four door custom. I don't know much about the car. I brought it home a year ago from my grandfather's Field.
Nice. Hope you get a chance to enjoy it
She's beautiful and you have the skills vision to do her justice. Can't wait to seeing her back on the road again. Thanks for sharing.
It’s a good car. Not the most desirable, but definitely has enough character to shine later
You were tiered Dave, when you first open the valve cover I saw that it had roller rockers, you were looking for the bellit style rockers. I understand being that tiered ... keep these videos coming. Cheers!🙂
I totally had blue billet buddies on my mind
i thinking the same thing lol
I've been completely in love with this car since first catching a glimpse of it a few years ago. One of my favorite eras of mercury/ford products.
Right on. Glad you dig
@@thedirtheadshed when you get tired of it, I could use a cool old merc to replace my burned down daily driver.
GREAT VIDEO DAVE!!!! I LOVE YOUR MERCURY BUILD!!!! VERY INSPIRING!!!! THANKS FOR SHARING!!!! TOTALLY AWSOME UPGRADES!!!! I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL AS WELL. PLEASE CONTINUE TO SHARE YOUR TRUTH!!!!
I really want to get that car back on the road
I appreciate that you're keeping the language family friendly. That way I don't ever need to think twice before forwarding a link.
Always will. Thanks for watching
Build the y block for that car! It's a killer build ! Always watch your vids down here in Clarkston Wa. I will be putting together a 57 Ford Fairlane with a supercharged 312 in the near future. I sure hope to see that merc at a local show someday. Keep up the good work!
I definitely want to cruise your town. Seems like a cool place
Very cool ride. 😎
Thank you
Bring on the low riders! 🎉🎉
All (2) of em!
Beautiful car my kind of build!
Thanks. It’ll be fun to see it come together
She look's like a keeper to Me. Baddasssery!
It’s a good car
That's a year You don't see a lot of as well. Laid out with one of Your paint job's it will be really nice.
A true automotive enthusiast.
Thank you
I'm in on any build videos on this car, so 😎
Coming up
Damn! Sweet ride.
Just got to keep picking away at it
About two weeks ago. I picked up a 1953 Mercury 255 V-8 engine. It's complete except the fan is missing. The plan is to put it in my 1930 Ford Model A with a body by Murray. The problem is that I'm also restoring a 1967 Ford Mustang Coupe and a 1967 Ford F-100 SWB. I Really need more than 24 hrs. in a day.
Dude. I know the feeling
Love it! I have a 55 customline with the same drivetrain. Everything else is stock.
Right on. Sounds like a cool cruiser
I also have a diverse arsenal of project cars, tube chassis buggy, diesel bel air, low rider c10 etc… love it!
Right on. I’m still on the fence about a buggy. Not many places to use it around here
@@thedirtheadshed ya, I find myself freezing my ass off a lot, I’m over in Vancouver wa, not far from you, definitely need to retain a snow wheeler as well. Heading to browns camp next weekend on the 11th praying for good weather🥶
Love the old Merc's, looking forward to the unveiling of this one!
Me too. Need to stop looking at marketplace and work on my existing stuff
Very nice project, I wish we had thuis stuff in the Netherlands
A lot of these cool cars have ended up over there
You've got a bunch of different projects in different directions all going on at once! glad to see it. thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching. Hopefully I’ll be driving one soon
I don’t know why but I prefer post cars to hardtops…but then again I didn’t grow up in that era so I’m free of the bias.
I like all of your wildly different automotive projects!
Glad you dig it
Man , this car needs to be driven . Cheers 🇨🇦
I know!! Cheers
I like stuff in the trunk. 😁
All the junk
So glad to see working on this car. Really like this 56 Mercury.
Thanks. Me too. Will be good to see it outside the shop again
Those Mercs look real sweet chop top if it's done right, there was this guy that had one not to far from where I live in the California bay area it was blue, the only thing when he was putting in the front windshield it got a crack on the passenger side. He left like that for many year's, everything else on the car was really nice.
Cutting curved glass is a dying art
It has Roller tip rockers, so stamped rocker with stock pushrod mount, but roller on the valve stem contact end
Yep. Good eye
Another good update
Thanks for watching
Gonna buy me a Mercury, cruise up and down this road
I need to! So many projects
Love that car!!
Thank you
I enjoy your channel cause you're all over the place with what projects you have. One minute a mini truck the next a rock crawler, then to a hotrod. Im the same way, i love it all.
Right on. Thanks for watching. Too much cool stuff out there to get stuck on one thing
Love the Boneyard sweatshirt! I have a shop with no ceiling too (4 foot o.c. trusses) just outside Springfield, OR. Maybe a short video on how you are insulating and heating yours?
Right on. Working on finishing that up soon
Heck yes!!! That thing will be awesome!
If needs to become priority
Oh man what a lineup on that beauty! Can’t wait to see how she comes out! Thanks for the update!!!
Thanks. I can’t wait till this and the Nissan are drivers
@@thedirtheadshed That lil truck is wicked awesome!
I like the on the fly feel of this one felt like hanging out with ya in the garage. Thanks for sharing and going through all the efforts doing the dreaded editing
Totally on the fly. That keeps it fun
Love those late 40's early 50's merc's they are just rolling art.
Totally are
🎼She’s crazy bout a Mercury, cruise up and down that road 🎶
Always in the back of my mind
That thing is totally rad! Saw it in the background of your other videos thinking that’ll be cool to see driving someday.
I want to drive it so bad. But this Nissan cut in line
out of these shows i love your intro song the best, that shit rocks! the show rocks harder keep it up bro cheers.
Thanks so much
👍😎👍 I’d watch this!
I’ll film it
dude, the amount of realism in your shows is awesome! Keep doing what you do!
Will do! Thanks for the support
Getting moving on my 50 Mercury over here. My flathead is finally built after 4 years!!! Time to get slammin!!!
Now we’re talking. You bought the right car
@@thedirtheadshed don't get too hot and bothered. It is a four door...granted, suicide doors ;)
You help me justify my odd ball line up of projects to my wife. 54 Roadmaster, 84 yota crawler, 72 k5 and slammed 69 c10 short bed
Sounds like a solid fleet
Whenever I hear "Medalist" I think "Metalist" and I picture you, as the master fabricator.
I picture a participation trophy
Buddy of mine has a 54 mercury glasstop. For those who don't know the roof is glass.
Those are cool cars. Pretty darn rare nowadays
I've subscribed for the Merc.
Right on. I’d better get busy
Dave you are awesome! Love the thing with the roller rockers I’ve had similar experiences showing someone something, only to realize that I apparently dreamed it🤣
It’s crazy how the mind works
Very cool car man. I knew you were a dirt head and mini truck guy, I remember your comet but I didn't think this was in your wheelhouse. I like it a lot.
Thanks: I’ll have to show off some
Or my old rides. Somehow
I totally forgot about this car of yours but it’s one of my favorites. Thanks for the Vid!
Thanks for watching
Nice post cars are the best looking in my opinion,Im working on a 54 Chevy coupe chopped 6 inches and slanted posts
Agreed.
Damn, me likely!
Right on
It does have roller rockers they're just not fancy aluminum ones they're just stamped Steel roller rockers look at the end it's got a big shiny wheel on it
Oh yeah. I caught it after the fact
Those are stamped steel roller rockers still way better than stock 👍
Yep. Now I just want to hear it run
They're roller *tip* rockers
Yep. I just had billet aluminum ones on my mind
Dave, I understand the reliability and cost advantage of the 350/350 combo, but man that thing really needs an FE. 390 with a C6 behind it would be ideal, 4 speed if it was a bit racier. Other than that, keep after it. It's a cool looking car you don't see very often.
That front clip I used will not work right with a front sump pan engine. I would like to keep a ford in it, but for what I’m doing it is not the best option
That Merc is the truth man. Love to see you get it back in action.
Thanks!
Sweet merc cant wait to watch itt
Those are roller rockers the roller on the spring not big fancys but i got the same in my 350
Nice! I’m sure it’s all good enough
@The Dirthead Shed they are great rockers. I never understood the fancy colors. Not something u really wanna look at again after installing. Your gonna have a bad time if u gotta look and the motors in the vehicle lol
Custom cars rule!
I need to put some time in !!
Love old Merc's sweet car get her on the go
Gotta make time!
Sweet ride !
Thank you
Dave, this thing is so neat. Definitely keep at it. 🤘
That's the plan!
Awesome car i have a 56 metalist sedan too..
Nice! I need to get busy on this one
@@thedirtheadshed same here! Mines been off the road for 6-7 years.. took it off the road to swapped it to a t5 transmission. Now need to get it back on the road.. then maybe rust repair and paint
It was a dream Dave, all a dream. You just dreamed that 350 came with billet roller rocker arms and trunnions. Then again, you might just be so sleep deprived you're delirious and missed the roller tips in the stamped steel ones.
It’s all true. I saw billet in my mind. Stamped in reality
@@thedirtheadshed haha good one 👍
Mini trucks…. Rock crawlers….. now lead sleds we definitely are best friends!!!
It’s my jam
Now that you went out and worked on Dereks 35 pickup, its time to collect the favor, get him out and get going on this again!
Absolutely love the car!
Thank you
Great video Dave! Let’s wheel soon
I’ll be out there in a couple weeks. Thanks
I can’t wait for you to show us more of this one!!
It should make for some good videos
I think I’d want and overdrive trans so you can get a decent gear in the back to let you peel out, but still be able to cruise while still keeping a mildish engine. Still that’s a killer deal on the th350 and it’s already in the shed…
I want all these things too.. but I have this stuff and it’s paid for. More concerned about cruising speed than burnouts.. it should be able to cruise 70+ which is good
Awesome project and a great departure from your other rigs.
Thanks. I’m stoked on them all
Your episodes are always enjoyable Dave! Have a great one dude.
Thanks! I’m trying
