Rightly so, based on your comment about these two ladies stealing the limelight, you need to see Stabat Mater dolorosa which blows this one out of the water for a performance by Simone and Floor. BUT, never doubt for one second the rest of the band. EPICA are a beast of a band.

You're right, Ronnie! The lead guitarist, Mark Jansen (no relation) was in Floor's original band After Forever. Simone & Floor are also fast friends - no egos between those two - and both have been singing for Arjen in Ayreon for a long time! Those Dutch girls can sing!

It is pretty funny that, later in the same show, there really is just a part with Floor and Simone singing. It's classical singing, not metal, but some (like my gf) say it kicks ass in its own way.

Yessss Epica!!! Another amazing symphonic metal band! These two along with Tarja, Anneke van Giersbergen from The Gathering, and Sharon den Adel from Within Temptation are fondly known as the Five Queens of Metal and they are ALL powerhouses. It’s really cool to see Simone and Floor together also because they come from kind of the “second wave” of female metal singers. Tarja and Sharon were two of the pioneers of the genre and Anneke is the godmother of them all, and the three of them were really an inspiration for Simone and Floor and so many women who have come after them. Absolutely amazing to see how they’ve risen to the same level of skill and popularity. Pretty much all of them have performed together at some point or another too!

The Singer of Epica is Simone Simons and she has been a very close friend of Floor Jansen since their teens. Both are Dutch and both have the same kind of background. Both emigrated, Floor to Sweden and Simone to Germany. Simone is of almost the same caliber as Floor, except she does not growl as far as I know. There are also some personal linkages to Floor's first band After Forever to Epica, but I don't know the details. I think it is Mark Jansen (not related) who shouted Floor Jansen at the end, but I am not sure. Maybe we can also appreciate that Simone was 2-3 months pregnant during this show and she had to do 23 songs....

    • @metalmiauws
      @metalmiauws 2 года назад +12

Mark was in the band After Forever before he gone out to do his own work, the band was first called Sahara Dust if I am not mistaken. So yeah, Mark and Floor have known each other a long time. Simone was Marks girlfriend at the start of the band (although they had Norwegian singer in the start, Simone took over very soon and so very young still) later they split but as far as is known on friendly basis. But all the Dutch (nah European) female fronted bands know each other. There was a big festival in Belgium every autumn (Metal Female Voices Fest) that had 3 days of live music in that genre and many bands met and knew each other already, there were some great duets there. Yes those where the day's...

Both Ladies have stepped in for other singers/bands on tour over the years prior to Floor becoming full time with Nightwish as well as a couple of others. All of them know or have played with one another at some point in their singing careers it seems. ;) mostly because Symphonic style has been around for a long while now but, not known, unless you knew. (not pushed into spotlight as mainstream or the likes by the industry) Shame, to me this sort of music and very talented vocalists and musicians would do the world much better than much of the bleh stuff the music industry decides the populace needs to focus on.. nothing new though. Love meh symphonic metal.. and other forms of metal in general tbh lol.

So many wonderful shots in this, Simone and her friend Floor, the chemistry
(they invited each other to their own bands, when on tour).
They twirl around each other, like the two halves of the soul, yin & yang,
Simone goes high, Floor low, then swapping voices around.
    The drummer, woo hoo.
The guitarists headbanging, then one of them up on the "table"!
7:13 the choir rocking a bit too.
Mark Jansen (no relation) was in Floors earlier band, After Forever, that's his voice at the end.
Epica, Pronounciation confirmed! (Also soft "J", as a "Y", Yahn-sen.)
Yes, yes, yes, check out the other track from same concert,
Stabat Mater Dolorosa, the crowd goes silent...

The first was After Forever, a gothic metal band, and the second was ReVamp, which I'd classify as progressive metal. IMO she did her best work with ReVamp, but it's hard to find live recordings with decent sound. There's plenty of good After Forever live performances, though, like this one I discovered just last week--very "reactable": --ruclips.net/video/73-_F9prx4I/видео.html

This video is from Epica's 10th anniversary show where they used a full orchestra and choir on stage. Epica always uses orchestra and choir for their albums, but normally in their live concerts, they use the orchestra and choir parts from backing tracks. Epica is very diverse in style ranging from beautiful balleds to very heavy songs. For Epica standards, Sancta Terra is quite a simple and light song. What makes the performance amazng is the duet with Floor. However what is missing is the contrast you will typically find in most Epica songs. Epica's "master" songs are probably Kingdom of Heaven parts 1&3. However just like with Nghtwish you don't do Poet and the Pendelum too early, I would also recommend you not to do Kingdom of Heaven before having done a couple of other songs. What I would suggest as a song containing most of the typical Epica elemets is "Design your Universe", also from the same live show as this song you have been reacting to. ruclips.net/video/9nlPx-HEpCU/видео.html

Epica is not just another band. Once you get what they’re about, you’ll understand what I mean. But they’re heavy and complex so they’re not for everyone.
This song is quite moderate in their standards, maybe somewhere in the top 50 list.

Epica took their name from the sixth album of USA Symphonic metal band Kamelot who hail from Tampa Florida. By coincidence, lead singer Simone Simons' husband Oliver Palotai plays keyboards for Kamelot and Simone has sung with them. During the Pandemic, Nightwish and Epica both did online live concerts. Epica did theirs called the Omega live concert playing tracks from their last album, Omega. You should check out 'The Skeleton Key' and 'Kingdom oh Heaven part 3' from that concert.
Floor and Simone have also sung previously with Dutch concept progressive band Ayreon who are also well recommended to listen to as well.

If you want to get to know Floor, she has her own RUclips channel where she show her beautiful country estate in the woods of Sweden, where she lives with her Sabaton drummer husband Hannes and their daughter. She is a very humble, sweet, intelligent and sensitive. She did some awesome covers over the COVID lock down and has started her solo career on the side. She and Marco chatted about some cool nerdy things like the possibility of alien life.
Floor is as impressive physically as she is vocally. In this video, you can see her next to Simone who is of average female height. Floor is 6'1" bare foot and often wears 4" heeled boots on stage. You should see her swing a sledge hammer when she was building a coral for her horses. She truly is a goddess and can seriously rock a black leather cape. Some people call her a 'Warrior Princess' in reference to the action series Xena, played by Lucy Lawless. They are about the same size and their stage out fits are VERY similar. NW is on tour so look out for new LIVE performances that are true gems. I recently saw them in San Francisco and can tell you that they are better LIVE and she sounds just as good as the studio version. Plus, she is so fun to watch and genuinely enjoys herself on stage.
I also recommend checking out her performances on the Dutch tv show Der Beste Sangers, especially 'Phantom Of The Opera' performed with Henk Poort who was the Dutch Phantom on stage. Also, the acoustic version of 'Hows The Heart' with Troy.

Epica was formed by guitarist Mark Jansen in 2002. Mark is not related to Floor , but the first band she joined at age 16 was After Forever ,which was co-founded by Mark.
Epica lead singer, Simone Simons, was about 3 months pregnant at this show.
This song isn't that representative of most Epica songs, as Mark usually adds some harsh vocals.
For a better taste of this band , try Consign To Oblivion or Cry For the Moon for older songs. And newer songs, The Skeleton Key and Kingdom of Heaven Pt 3.
As with Nightwish, Epica is great live.

Love your genuine reactions. Would love to see you react to Floor singing 'Phantom of the Opera' as someone else said but also 'Valley of the Queens' by Ayreon where Floor sings alongside Annette Van Giersbergen and Marcela Bovion. Following that maybe 'Somewhere' featuring Annette and Sharon (from Within Temptation) and 'Everybody dies' by Ayreon - great entrance near the end from Floor.

Epica (the band) is named after the album Epica by Kamelot. The same Kamelot where Simone's (the red-head singer) husband plays keyboards in (but was not the keyboardplayer at the time) and the same Kamelot whose female singers stood in voor Anette during Nightwish's Denver Debacle, two days before Floor became the singer of NW.
Epica was founded by Marc Jansen (not related to Floor) after he was forced to leave After Forever. The same After Forever where Floor was the singer.
Epica, Kamelot, After Forever and Nightwish....they just intertwine in so many ways...

OOOoooh sooo great you got your ears and eyes into Epica now!!! It may not be that kind of superpopular rabbithole like Nightwish is but oh believe me - it's not less great in any kind. Simone - many surely told about her beeing a long time friend of Floor - doesn't need to hide in this performance and you will find a lot of outstanding, eye soaking songs out there.
And the Band whole together ... well. Mark Jansen may not be called the metal mozart like Tuomas is, but his compositions though are outstanding, phenomenal!!! Yea they surely go way harder than Nightwish does, they maybe go more symphonical with orchestra and choir. So for me, Epica IS "Symphonic Metal" for me. Nightwish attracts a lot of people aside from Metalfans for sure, Epica doesn't that much, so they may seem less known and spread but you already found out. They ARE on a same level. That's why the nightwish-army and the epicans go side by side and stay with you on this journey xD
Welll there may be a lot of recomendations in your comments and all the performances from this show with full orchestre are phenomenal. If you want another mindblowing and partially super hard performance go for the "Consign to oblivion" live Zenith (Paris) clip - you won't regret and you mouth won't be shut!!! :D

As others have mentioned, they did a second song together in this concert. And it will give you exactly what you just said you want: The two of them, with very little to distract you. It is called "Stabat Mater" and is based on a 13th century hymn to the Virgin Mary, about her mourning after the crucifixion. The music was composed in the 1700's by Giovanni Pergolesi, for soprano and contralto. Simone and Floor sing it together, with Floor taking the contralto line, showing just how insane her range is. While they are singing this, the stadium of metalheads is stunned into complete silence. Don't miss it. ruclips.net/video/QqdvFPBGN0c/видео.html

It is the second pronunciation so it's a 'hard' C that sounds like a K.
Normally, Simone can carry notes almost as long as Floor can. She has GREAT lung capacity and breath control. This time though, there was a slight problem so she needed a little help singing the song; If you look really carefully, you can see Simone's baby bump. She was something like six months pregnant here so the baby was pushing on her diaphragm (allowing her less room for air) and she still sounded AWESOME! AND SHE DID THE ENTIRE CONCERT IN HEELS!!! She really is a consummate professional! :)

Epica is the product of Mark Jansen (the guitarist, not related to Floor). He is the mastermind behind their music like Tuomas is for Nightwish. He founded Epica after his previous band, After Forever, had split up. The singer of that previous band, was Floor. So while After Forever does not exist anymore, you should also definitely check them out.

Yup, they continued with Floor doing most of the songwriting i believe togetehr witht the other guys. You can hear the difference in the sound. Epica pretty much took off from where Mark left on the second album. Af split around 2009 iirc, which devestated Floor. She made her new band Revamp and threw her self completely into the work which led to her burnout.

Well, when you'll listen to Sabaton, you will be learning history in the most fun way. The also have a parallel channel named "Sabaton History" that tells the story behind the events recounted in the songs. Spolier: Sabaton's actual drummer, Hannes Van Dahl is the husband of Floor Jansen, and they have a daughter too, named Freja.

For more of them, their lead singer is Simone Simmons (I believe her first name is pronounced Simon-eh, please someone correct me if I'm wrong), go for Consign to Oblivion Live from Zenith. You won't be disappointed! Now, I also must suggest you check out Spiritbox and their official video for Rule of Nines. If memory serves me correctly, Jinjer has said that's one of the bands they listen to a lot (again, please correct me if I'm mistaken)!
