Thanks for stopping by for our review of Magnate: The First City! We're Amy & Maggie aka ThinkerThemer. We're an Australian couple with two very different perspectives of what makes a great board game - Amy (Thinker) is all about the mechanics and enjoys tight, competitive games, and Maggie (Themer) is all about the storytelling and the theme of the game, and the 'world' that the designer is trying to create. Subscribe to our channel to hear us talk about these two elements of a game, and how well integrated we feel these are in delivering a cohesive and wonderful game experience.

Can't remember if I've mentioned this before, but I very much appreciate how you insert close-ups of the board and components while explaining the game: that attention to detail is first rate -- thanks!
    Also, congratulations on the wedding!

I own this game but have not played it yet. Your enthusiasm has inspired me to get it to the table today. Thanks

I love your videos! You two have the most genuine and honest videos, perfect chemistry together, and I love how the overall flow just seems very natural. On a side note, I can listen to you both speak for hours because I love the accents! Haha. Thanks for the review, might be something worth checking out! :)

Great review! This definitely didn't look like a game that would appeal to me, but after watching you two talk about it, I'm really curious to try it out. Not sure I need it in my collection, but I'm certainly going to keep an eye out for it at conventions.

Hi Amy and Maggie, again what a gret review. And I love, love your last analysis! And no... it is definitely not for me. It soo much reminded me of mega Monopoly. Btw. the absolute brilliant movie Margin Call comes to mind. But what an intriguing thematic game!

Such an awesome review! I have to admit, this one did not really catch my interest but now I am very interested! I am proud to admit that Monopoly was my favorite game growing up, along with a few others. But I have never found a good replacement for it. So I am excited to see something that might actually be a Gamers Monopoly! Love that you love the paper money! It probably really is about the wallet and how it makes you feel! I am excited about that! You have definitely put this on my radar. My biggest concern is right now I rarely have three people to play. But it’s definitely going on my list! Thanks so much for this great review! You girls are awesome! ❤️

Interesting game with what looks to be great production levels. Don't think it would get much play with my gaming group though. Thanks for another great video.

Nice review and explanation ! Definitely not for me, this is not what I wanna do when I am playing a game, replicating property economy ahaha no way. But I am happy if it finds its audience and that you had a good time with it !

I watched your review before playing a game of this yesterday.
The game is amazing and I enjoyed it a lot. However, I strongly disagree with not playing with advanced rules. I think playing the game without the position bidding and tenant types would completely break what makes it interesting.

Rulebook has it right, should play with them after your first game.

@@RvLeshrac strong disagree. It's not even a game if it is played with the basic rules.

What an interesting sounding game. I remember playing this game growing up called Stock Market, and i absolutely loved it, and the unpredictability of the stock crashing. Great review. Would u say there is a 'ideal' player count for the game? And how long does a game take depending on 2 players or 4 players?

We skip the cardboard foundation tiles and just put the buildings out
And I'll recommend people jump into the advanced buildings to start 😁 those, dice and the rough tutorial deck initially made me not excited about the game, but it is very good

Great explanation, but... I'm getting tired of games with heavy mechanics. They seem different, but feel, to me at least, more of the same. It's all about small routines and making choices within limits. No human cunning.
I've started to love games that focus on player interaction around the board (except party games). A great example is Secret Hitler (sounds awful, but demands great psychologic or social insight skill challenge) or D&D.
So great explanation, insightful review, and enough clarity to me why I'm out of this game. Thanks!

We are house-hunting at the moment, so definitely triggered... Aside from that, this theme doesn't really resonate, but it does sound an interesting game.

About the paper money and the wallet, is it annoying to track how much you have?

IAQ - I understand that whenever Maggie gets into a new hobby she is taking that very seriously 😉 so, Maggie, how many hobbies have there been in the course of time? Which ones? Do you remember all of them? How long roundabout do you stick to a new hobby until you move on? Feel free to share some fun stories 😉 And finally, is there the potential risk that you will abandon the hobby of boardgaming someday? That would be terrible 😱

Appreciate the review, but after one play I found this game extremely boring and somewhat confusing. Perhaps the theme just doesn’t appeal to me, although I do like the economic/property game Chinatown.
