Judo's terminology is incredible because it highlights subtle differences in techniques like no other martial art... when I began coaching my old high school wrestling team I introduced this type of naming Concept. It really helps young athletes understand the technique but you should never expect them to remember Japanese terminology... just call it a stepping rear foot sweep and planted rear foot sweep for English speakers and remember every now and then judo throws you a curveball like Tani otoshi..."vally drop" 🤔

it's very complicated for young people to differentiate them, it takes countless demonstrations before making the difference (by ashi barai * you have to let him continue his race and sweep his foot when he goes forward
ko soto gari * we stop its advance and we unbalance it while pulling it backwards by sweeping it,,,, I remember when I was yellow 34 years ago, when randori was doing, we were doing combos ( sequence of 3 takes / or more,,, and when the sensei said of ashi barai I did ko soto gari and vice versa so close they are 🥵🥵🤣🤣

Kouchi makikomi involves gripping like ippon seoi nage, while kouchi gake does not
