    You are the only one I have found on You Tube that is talking about magazine photography. I have done a variety of photography through the years as a hobbyist and a freelance photographer. I am retired now and I want to start this type of photography. I also like to write, so I would like to combine the two. Please do more videos about magazine photography. You are the only one that has talked about this that I could find.

    thank you so much for your wisdom! I’m in my junior yr of college and I’m trying to get started with photography. I’ve gotten many compliments on my photos and people always ask me to take there photos but I’ve only taken photos on iPhone. I was wondering 1. How to I get started to get my foot in the door 2. What camera should I use (I know nothing about cameras)

    My suggestion is getting an internship at the magazine if your a student or college age, they hired me without much experience in editorial work, I had some work from a student newspaper, but it was a great foot in the door. Thanks for the video!

    Wow- this was so helpful! I've just started to break into the magazine world by working with a small local publication. I'm so excited I found your channel- it's so hard to find advice from actual working photographers. Seems like there are a lot of industry secrets. Thank you for this! Where can I find your portfolio?

      Hey! So happy to connect with you here, thank you for watching and reaching out. I totally know what you mean, a lot of photo advice comes from hobbyist and a bit of a different approach is required by working photographers. I’d love to make more helpful videos for you, is there anything specific you’d like to know more about?
      And thanks for connecting on Instagram, I assume you saw our workerbeesupply.com site which has some editorial work in the projects section. I also have a personal site I used to use: eugenstudio.com that has a lot of editorial works and tear sheets, but we no longer use it to market my work (everything is under the WBS brand now).

    Super helpful. I've been shooting and assisting 10+ years out of the Detroit area. A lot of magazines coming through and not many hiring locally. Worse off local magazines pay poor, not on time, and or have gone out of business.
    What are your tips on lists and associations? I am currently a member of ASMP and my local business area association. I also use photoassistant.com for PA and Grip/Gaff work.

    First, thank you from 🇲🇾
    My question, is it worth it financially to break into editorial photography? Or do you have to do other form of professional photography (such as events, portraiture) while working to make that first break into magazine or editorial?

    • @WorkerBeeSupply
      @WorkerBeeSupply  4 года назад +1

      Hey Mohammad, thank you so much for watching the video and joining us as a subscriber, it's awesome to have you! You are totally right in your thinking about doing multiple types of work. This depends a little bit on where you live and the magazine industry in your city, most photographers do a mix of commercial and editorial work, however. Editorial budgets are generally not very big, but the shoots are fun and exciting. Plus seeing your work in print is very rewarding and makes for great marketing for other commercial work. I think the best approach is to have a mix of work exactly as you mention. Some editorial but supported by other commercial work such as portraits, advertising, and events. We do a mix of all of these and it makes for a more interesting variety and allows you to develop a variety of skills. Please let me know if you have any other questions!

    Thanks for all the great info. My local market pays about $600 for a cover shoot but they don’t normally pay for expenses. What is your method for dealing with shoots that involve assistants, sets, etc. I’m trying to evolve my work but these local budgets just don’t allow for that. Curious what a national mag offers.

    • @WorkerBeeSupply
      @WorkerBeeSupply  4 года назад

      Hey, thanks a lot for watching, I'm glad you found it useful. I think the tricky thing with editorial is there is nearly no room to negotiate budgets. We're in Toronto, I think for a single editorial portrait session that the magazine will use 1 or 2 photos from, $500 is pretty standard. For shoots like that there is often no other budget. For a feature story the budget could be a bit bigger (~1K or so) that would be multiple pages possible visiting a few different locations or some travel. For those there is sometimes expenses for travel, food, etc., that are covered. And magazines will also pay extra if you get the cover image (some of them).
      I should mention we don't really shoot fashion or still life for magazines, so sets haven't come up, but I assume if that's what the magazine wants, there should be an expense line for that. As for assistants I think most avoid them when possible and eat the cost when needed.
      Most magazine photographers are also commercial photographers, and they do magazine work because it can be a lot more interesting and it looks good to be published and all that. So there is some cost offset between the two, I think it would be quite difficult to make a good living exclusively as a magazine photographer unfortunately. But it's a create additional revenue stream for photographers.
      Let me know if you have any other questions!

    How did you find all the different people to photograph and interview at the beginning?

    • @WorkerBeeSupply
      @WorkerBeeSupply  4 года назад +3

      Hey, this part is super doable. I started by making a list of 5 cool friends or acquaintances (who also know interesting people), that knew me and would be willing to do me a favour. After photographing those people I asked them each to recommend three interesting people. I then reached out to those people saying “so and so recommended I connect with you, I’’ doing this project....”. Not everyone agrees but most people do and then I ask them to recommend / introduce me to more people. For all of these people i share the final images with them and let them use them in exchange for them posing for me. Most people want a nice photo of themselves so that works out great for everyone involved. Let me know if that clears things up and if you have any other questions. Thanks a lot for watching!

    Awesome help dude, thank you. I’d love to know how you find people’s email addresses. I often find the generic company address and the cross reference with LinkedIn and just use trial and error, but it’s quite hit and miss.

    • @WorkerBeeSupply
      @WorkerBeeSupply  5 лет назад +1

      Hey Ash, thanks for watching! Finding people's email is for sure the most time-consuming part. I'll try to make a more in-depth video about how we do it but here are a few tips. A service called Hunter is pretty great, hunter.io/, if it won't find you the exact email it will at least find the company's email format so you can fill it in with the person's name. Sometimes mastheads will actually have certain people's emails listed. Digging deep on less-used social accounts can also work like their google page or a facebook page they run. Often they will have to fill in ther email when setting these up but don't remember to hide it. Depending on who you are trying to reach, sometimes certain legal or more formal documents will have emails hidden in them. Other than that, figuring out how they format the emails and doing some trial and error is the best way to get the stragglers. Let me know if that helps!

      Worker Bee Supply Hey Eugene, I used hunter to research the email format of companies and it’s pretty invaluable for this, thank you very much for putting me on to it. However with just 50 free searches per month, I hit my quota pretty fast and the cost to upgrade is extortionate! Like crazy expensive for what it is. Do you know if there’s a way around this? Apparently mailtrack is a free chrome extension but I’m unfamiliar with what it is or how it works. Thanks Ash

    • @WorkerBeeSupply
      @WorkerBeeSupply  5 лет назад +1

      Hey, I haven’t used the paid tier and not sure of other free options. Although with larger companies, you can almost always guess the email format and figure it out for the person you’re trying to reach. I know it’s not quite as quick unfortunately. Let me know if you find a good option!

    How did you find photography clients locally?? And find magazine contact details also.

    • @WorkerBeeSupply
      @WorkerBeeSupply  6 месяцев назад

      A lot of new work comes from recommendations (word of mouth) and people finding us on our website. The goal is to build awareness around the kind of work you want to do and have an easy way for people to recommend you. For magazine contact details, you can typically find it in the magazine mashead section on the magazine or website. You can also find one person's email at the magazine and use the same format to guess a different person's email there. If you enjoyed this video check out our latest upload - a behind the sceens look at a shoot for The New York Times! Let me know what you think.

      Hey, you're welcome, thanks for watching! I think most lifestyle magazines (fashion mags, wired, fast company, monocole, etc.) typically have a product feature where they will commission a series of still life's. If I had to guess probably 2-3 separate shoots per issue.
