I fell into becoming a photographer for a band that is relatively successful here on RUclips. After seeing a few of the band's shows in quick succession, I asked the band's manager I could bring a "pro" camera to a show. Part of that motivation was because I had a Sony A7III which I rarely used. Soon afterwards, I was shooting...and hanging out with them...everywhere. Indeed, I am in California now because the last eight shows of their tour were here and in Arizona this past month.
@@BowenMoreno Sadly, with the current situation in Ukraine, it is likely the band (which is in Moscow) will have to cancel its tour which was scheduled to begin in April. Not only that, the lead singer is Ukrainian and in Kyiv, and I worry deeply for his and his family’s safety.
Definitely great information I barely started shooting concerts this year and I've already shot Bring The Horizon Joji and even My Chemical Romance through a publication
This was dope, exactly the information I was looking for. And the fact all your examples were in Phoenix! All the places I'd love to shoot at, thank you
Just found ypur videoy super helpful!! I have 2 questions regarding publications: 1. Do you deliver photos only or do they expect you to deliver a written review of the concert aswell? 2. Do you look for publications in the region of the concert or is nation wide possible too? If you find the time to answer, that'd be much appreciated. All the best feom Germany !!
@@xxrqcxxrscp-ef5td I dont have answers to these questions. I reached out to fome publications without much luck. I started contacting the Artist Management and landed a few (unpaid) concerts shoots. Ranging from 500ppl to 5k Venues. Would recommend this strat from my own experience if you dont already have some connections to publicaitons
So do you get the photo pass the day of the concert or is their an option where you can get the photo pass sent to your house or maybe an email saying I can bring my camera or something
Thanks for sharing the tips for music photography. I understand the tip about contacting publications, wanting to be a contributor. When they allow you to be a contributor, do you just shoot the photos, or do you have to write an article to go along with the photos? Thanks Bowen!
I'm a 15 year old who started photography in 2015, i obviously dont work for anybody but I really want to gain some experience and I want to be a concert photographer in the future. Would it really be possible at my age? I checked local facebook events and most of them are at bars which means I am unable to go but there have been some where its a possibility for me to go to but it would be something like a small christmas show but at a large venue where ive actually been before to see a show so since it's a small show there's a possibility that people would be allowed to do some photography, especially since i'm not planning to be paid for it but just want some experience with this type of photography. The example emails show as if i'm supposed to be working with other people like a small company or something and that is obviously not the case for me. Like the email at 3:23 says "reaching out on behalf of (name)" and I also do not have an editor. Would this be able to work out for me? here's a link to a google drive with some pictures i've taken, some good and some bad, a lot of these are just some I took for fun and not exactly intended to be seen as something that's supposed to land a professional job (which isn't exactly my plan at the moment anyways since i'm still a bit young) drive.google.com/drive/folders/142kTFAAdGO-D25SOyG26MFzpBkF2dYVk?usp=sharing I also have comments on for any critiques if anyone would like to give me some helpful critiscm, keep in mind all pics shown there are also unedited. Mostly supplied the google drive link so it gives a basic idea of some of my work to see if I would have more potential to do some small photography at some venues.
I’m from Norway, not sure where you’re at, but as long as you’re working, you’re age shouldn’t matter. I used to host events and had even under 15 performers.
Starter concert photographer here. What I’ve been doing is straight emailing them from Lightroom. Although, I was thinking about going to Google drive to be more professional.
Hi Lori! This is pretty straight forward. I usually make a dropbox folder with high resolution exports that I will send to my publication. I will also forward this folder to the bands rep that I spoke to over email.
You ask to get paid, and you say “no” to people who don’t want to pay you. If more music photographers used this basic approach, then more music photographers would get paid. Oh, and work on your game. Produce high-quality images. And, don’t show or share your average or shitty photos.

That's awesome to hear!! Crazy to see where life can take you.

It’s amazing how much of a process we have through including sleepless nights to work for free.

Good stuff Bowen. I've passed this on to my daughter who's getting into reviewing/photographing bands...
I’m also in Phoenix and go to so many shows presented by Psyko Steve! Nice to know it’s pretty easy to just email them!
This was interesting, I used to get photo passes over 20 years ago and nothing has changed.
First three songs and no flash.

this is absolutely the best version of this kind of video -- wholly true, and well presented
Aye let's go Phoenix!
Believe I've found my calling. Great video!
That is awesome to hear!!
Can you do a video on equipment? For beginner and when you get a good gig
Great question! I have been meaning to upload quite a few more videos. I might have to start with this one.
You are a pure genius. Thanks for those tips!
Happy to help!

Thank you for this ❤️❤️
Great video mate! Super helpful
Thank you so much!
Thank you. How do you deliver the photos to your client?
Great question! I usually just send a link to Dropbox or google drive via email the day after.

Thank you for this video!! It’s organized and motivating :)
You're so welcome!
This is so cool!!!
Thank you Logan!
This was soooo great. Thank you so much

it's always better, if you can write as well.. I mean, that's how SEO is working... content, content, content...
Thank you for this
this was great information, thank you so much
I live in South Carolina, 2hrs away from Atlanta and Charlotte. Anyways, I have no idea where to look for media outlets to work for! Any suggestions?
How often do you get a plus one? Is it worth to ask for smaller shows?
Also, does working with the promoter get you paid?
It’s worth asking - I probably get a +1 about half the time!
Typically these gigs don’t pay.
Thank you for this man🙏
Of course!
What should I shoot photos at concerts what’s setting speed aperture etc ?
Auto mode with flash on
Other then Instagram,Facebook,Twitter social platforms what else can I add to publish my photos on to ?

I would say try going for family friendly places and approach as looking for work experience

What do I ask the media outlet? I have a friend that works for radio but idk who he should submit the info to
Where did you create your portfolio
Square space! It’s the best
Once you have shot several shows over many years for a band. How do you ask to be a tour photographer?
you dont- you get asked by a band manager or artist themselves
make yr pictures standout & be a good hang, you’ll find yr spot! good luck!!
Can you elaborate on the method of delivery for the shots? Is it Google drive or Dropbox or something else? Thanks!

Mmmm good stuff. Maybe I found a new hobbie
yes dude you will kill it!!
Yo are you from Minnesota?
Facebook is phasing out?
But concert photography gets you the ladies 😜
not true at all.
