Walkthrough of a rare U-Haul CT-13 travel trailer

- U-Haul actually made rental fiberglass campers in the 1980s and sold them out to private buyers in 1992. I'll give you some history behind these cute little vintage rigs called a CT-13, how I found mine, and what I paid for it, and a tour. I know, right?! I had no idea they existed either until I got one either!!

3 beds in one feet....great
@@LovelyLion1 👍
Just watched this and subscribed. You can use silicone in a tube to seal your outdoor lights.
@@crazydays7 Thank you so much for the insight! I ended up using RTV to rebuild the gasket. It is one solid gasket that houses the lights, so this was a makeshift solution. It came out okay, but now that I have something to build off of, the silicone may do the trick!
Man you are so cool. And I want one
This is so cool, didnt even know these existed. Uhaul was way ahead of their time. They would do very well now.
I should start a campaign to get them to bring these back! Lol... They are amazing little campers!
❤ i agree.
yeh i bet these would rent really well now
This is very neat. How do you heat it because I thought I heard you say you took the heater out.
I wish they’d do it. I don’t want to buy but I’d definitely rent.
I used to clean RVs for UHaul back in the 80's so I saw plenty of these. I'm glad you added the air conditioner and ceiling fan as condensation was a big problem. Moisture would roll off the ceiling and walls. Bet you don't have any roof leakage problems as most other trailers do. You've got this one decorated so cute. Love it!
That's so cool! I'd love to pick your brain for the things that I missed or was unaware of in the original condition of these campers! The only leaks I am still struggling with are the occasional window leaks. Really neat that you know these campers inside and out. They are the gem of the small fiberglass campers. 💛
They had poor ventilation - I remember renting one and it was like living in a shower stall.
All campers have a problem with condensation
@@Larryw-o2keven those ones that collapse down on themselves?
Jesus loves you 💕💖❤️
4:19 THANK you for NOT having a fisheye lens. Honestly, I rather get the sense of the small space in a "natural" scope, rather than seeing eveything in a wider angle. This was a breath of fresh air. Very good presentation, and love what you did with the trailer.
Thank you so much! 💛
Fish eye lenses distorts everything so much 😫
same actually I watch a lot of micro apartment tours and when there's fish lense it automatically seems sooo much bigger than it actually is that I feel like I never truly grasp how small they really are so I much prefer this
Jesus loves you ❤️💖💕
I'm with the others. All a fisheye lens does is distort the actual view.
I never knew U-haul had campers! This so cool. It is probably made way better than the junk mainstream RV companies put out these days.
It is an amazing little camper! I'm lucky to have it! 💛
My dad had a camper just like this camped many a night in it. For two people it was the perfect size we called it the dinosaur egg. Some of the happiest times of my life was on our simple camping trips. Never knew they was so rare thanks for this brings back so many good memories!!
That's so awesome! I'm sure those are such cherished memories! Thanks for sharing your story! 💛
@@tennesseewandererlop😊😊
Imagine if UHaul got back in the business of campers. That would be amazing.
I need to start a campaign to bring them back! Lol!
Sadly, they would probably over charge for them.
They'd flourish here in Australia 😎
There would be entire neighborhoods of them now! 😂😂
I'm wondering if they did, would anyone who owns one of these get pulled up for illegal ownership by someone not up to what's going on?
Wow it's been a long time since I've seen one of these. Didn't know they still exist! Things were built to last back then.
A lot of them have been repainted and decals have been removed, so you may not recognize them as a U-Haul if you see one. And you are right! They don't make em like they used to!
@@tennesseewanderer❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
It looks nice and clean. You’re obviously taking great care of it. The max fan is a great addition. Congrats on a great catch.
If I was going to make a replacement grommet for your tail lights I would likely get a motorcycle inner tube and make one from scratch. Make a template and keep it for the next time.
That is great advice! There is actually a Facebook group that has a retrofitted 3-D printable taillight fixture. I just love the original and will try to figure out how to salvage it when the time comes to start the restoration on this little gem. I'm too busy using and abusing it to do restorative work right now, only maintaining it currently. You've got my wheels spinning on how to fix it, thanks so much for the advice! 💛
Out of all the camper and RV tours I have seen yours is by far is the cutest one.
Thank you so much! It's a little wild, but it makes me happy. 💛
The best part of this video is how upbeat and proud you are of the camper. Congratulations and have an awesome time. Definitely does look like a great time.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I've just gained so much from this experience, it makes me really happy. I am living my life differently and also see the world differently as a result! Hope to see you down the road! 💛
a million views soon, your negging can't work.
Jesus loves you 💕💖❤️
Absolutely love your home! I hadn't seen one before. Thanks for the tour. 🐾🙏🏻✌🏻
Thank you so much! It's been such a fun little thing to travel the country with.
@@tennesseewanderer I'm fitting up a 6x10 cargo trailer but I would have loved to have found one of those when I was looking for options.
I would totally live in that with a family of 4
Had a fleet of these when i worked for UHaul. I actually kept one for a year for my own use. This was in 1988. The air cooler system sucked in hot Florida weather but still a cool trailer.
That's so awesome!!! Yeah, I try to stay out of hot humid temps... that's why I got stuck on the Olympic Peninsula in the summer heat wave. We would have melted anywhere else.
What an adorable camper. It's really cool how well designed and thought out it is. I got a history lesson, because I've never knew that Uhaul had rental campers before. It's 80's looking in the best ways.
Thank you so much! It's been such an amazing way to see this beautiful country we live in! 💛
I love it so much. Excellent condition and all original. Two sleeping areas and a kitchen! Someone took very good care of it .
My family would love camping in one of those☺️
It's been so fun! The Scamps and Casitas are set up very similarly. I would highly recommend camping in one if you ever get the opportunity! 💛 Hope to see you down the road!
I looked at it several times and I love the inside design. It is ok you do not have the camera lenes, but you moved kind of fast with it. You also have a great voice for this. Thank you so much for posting this. I am in love with mine even though she is in need of some repairs. Peace!
Thank you very much and thanks for the feedback! I hope you have just as much fun with yours as I've had with mine!!! 💛
This is so cute and cosy. I love everything, especially the little play, bed area for your cat. I'm imagining driving it around with my dog, both of us enjoying different places to visit and then cosying up to sleep at night.😊
It's a real treat to be able to have them with me. They are both amazing animals. I'm fortunate to have such a duo... thank you so much for the kind words! 💛
Wow, that is so cute! Looks like a mini home. You made it look so homey. Beautiful! Too bad there were so few made. I would love to have one 😊
I wish there was a way to get them to do this again! It's such a unique little piece of U-Haul history... They wouldn't be able to keep these on the lot now if they rented them out again.
Check out a Scamp, they still make a 13 footer iirc...
It always confuses me when I hear these referred to as Campers; in the UK we call them Caravans, whereas a Camper usually means a Campervan, like an RV.
Anyways, it’s properly cute and I love how much you love it!
My Mom had the exact same color Tupperware canisters. I still have them. Adorable camper!! My nephew works for U-Haul…I’m going to share your video with him.
Thank you! It's a nostalgic little bubble to me! I love it so much! 💛
For your lights - you should be able to find something along the lines of 'liquid gasket' or even better generic gasket material that you can trim to fit and just screw in place in between light cover and camper body.. Auto-parts places, Home Depot, etc., should be able to help with that. Or any place that does camper window installations, or even an auto mechanic shop with someone that knows what they are doing. Great camper! Keep up the content!
Thank you for the info! I'll be getting it back to my parent's house soon with a full garage of tools and wind protection to work on some of the pressing issues that need to be addressed. My dad is a smart man and engineer savvy... I'm sure he'll help me get some of the issues resolved. Thanks again for all the kind words! 💛
Black RTV sealant(Momentive RTV103). Pull cover off first and inspect condition of terminals while your at it, you want to address any corrosion while your there. I have my high mount brake light on my truck cab sealed with it after I found water intrusion from a failed gasket around the housing and it has been dry since I did the seal job 8-10 years ago.
If you want to remove the lamps in future, make a seal out of a rubber sheet, or if you don't, just use silicon in a tube, it's cheap from any home depot type of store.
I'm English in U.K. 🇬🇧 and love ❤️ these chanels. Just found yours. The most cute, simply and well organised. It's beautiful. I'm 76 and don't drive but I'd love this on my driveway and I'd play at travelling, cooking my eggs for breakfast in this camper. I'd even spend a night or two in it. It's just so accommodating, adorable and fun. The bedding is so cheerful. It's a tiny home. I love it. Don't sell it, it's your own unique treasure with so much original about it. Happy Camper 👌❤️🤗 from 🇬🇧😘😘⚡️⚡️⚡️
Thank you so much! I've been in it since November of 2022 and I have enjoyed every second! I will be excited to get home back to my creature comforts as well! But this has been the journey of a lifetime! 💛
You have s driveway and no car in the uk ... how lucky to have a driveway 😮
I had the opportunity to travel in one of these in the spring of 1986. I went to a little two room school house in the country. Our eighth grade class, 10 kids, went on a field trip for a long weekend. We rented a motorhome, and one of these from U-Haul. At night the girls stayed in the little camper like yours and the boys were in the motorhome. Brings back great memories.
Ahhhh! That's incredible!!! Do you recall what they rented for back then? I have no idea of even a ballpark figure.
@@tennesseewanderer no idea. I was 14 at the time. 😊
@@debraerpenbeck1024 No worries! Thanks for the reply! I've been trying to find out for a hot minute what they rented for with no luck so far! I'm just so curious! Haha! What a cool memory for you to have from 14 though!!!
I like it! Thanks for sharing your cool little rig.
Thank you for taking the time to watch! 💛
Hey Ashley! In regards to your light molding that is dry rotting, you could scrape the old seal and apply black silicone sealant. [this may require removing that light cover] Love this camper! I am inspired!!!! Keep Wandering!!!
Thanks so much for the idea! I'll be working on those in about 2 weeks. I've got some adhesive weather stripping coming that should help seal it. It needs some work before I travel back to Tennessee with it. Hope to see you down the road!
These little things were ahead of their time.
Way ahead of their time! I should start a campaign to bring them back! Lol
What a cozy little camper! I would love to travel with one.
It's so fun!!! 💛 I'm so lucky to have found it!!!
Adorable!
I immediately noticed the Tupperware tub. I still have small versions of that line, in that color, as well as yellow.
I have a yellow set too that would match the flower buttons on the curtains perfectly! 💛
The Uhaul family is very scary 😨 read 📚 about them 😳 ! They're infamous! #history #uhaul
Yes they are, but they have created some really neat pieces of American history. They are definitely not a typical family though. Lol
I love your camper! So cute and you've done a great job customizing it to suit your needs.
Thank you! I just love it so much!
Great job on her, decor is cute. Love the boho look. How did you hang stuff on the walls? We just brought a burro 1983, which is needing redone including fiberglass repair and back-end wood repair. Outside needs paint job. We have all original refrigerator, fiberglass doors, stove, fan. The doors are painted blue original coat. Cleaned one up and polished her and it looks beautiful.
Thank you again! So excited for your upcoming adventures with yours! I used Command velcro strips to hang things on the fiberglass, that way if I changed my mind it's easy to rearrange.
@@tennesseewanderer Thank you for responding. Just got her scrubbed out on inside.
I love this little camper.I have been looking for something close to this. Its adorable.Little campers are hard to find and are often more expensive now.Enjoy it's a great find
So happy about speaking free to my daughter! Somthing's around here are worth the change! To many mix matched parts, was the taking point years ago and for a couple not even starting out yet! Somthing like this has value because it is not complicated and provides a more safe option for the future! Neat, still scary though! Took the higher ground yet again! And thanks! No door crashers for no reason
Thank you! I lucked out getting it before the pandemic. Who could have seen that coming? It totally changed the landscape for everything camping and boondocking.
This is awesome video 👍. U-Haul should bring these back. Would love to rent one to tow along with my SUV for family vacation.
Right! I wish they would, too! They were way ahead of their time!
Numbers 24:8 KJV
God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows.
As for a solution for the taillights….just go to a Home Depot or any hardware store and get bathroom rubberized caulking, either in white or black… it’s easy to use and easy to remove, squeezes out a tube like toothpaste….may not be factory perfect to your taste, but your creative i’m sure you will make it look good and it will do the job to stop water from getting in to the taillight lens….enjoyed your video…👍🏻
Thank you so much for all of your insight! I'll have to look into some of that!
What a cool little camper unit. I really like the setup, layout, and the appliances that came with it. With that being said, Like so many others who’ve commented, I had no idea Uhaul made these. Now that you’ve shown us this and now that I know it exists, I really want one. Anyways, thank you so much for sharing and I look forward to seeing more of your content. Take care!
Thank you so much for the kind words! I didn't know it existed until the day before I bought it! I didn't know how cool it was until I brought it home. It's been so much fun!
Amazing how it's in such great shape. It's like going back in time. Has a Woodstock vibe to it. Great find. And still practical to this day.❤
Thank you! It was such a lucky find! It's been fun giving it a retro vibe. 💛
I worked in the '80s for an agency where the boss was a Catholic priest. He owned a little Retreat House up in monticello. He told us once that during Woodstock he sat in his house with a rifle. Not all of those people were as nostalgic as you think

super cute! Love the color scheme.
Thank you! One of my best friends in Nashville helped me sew the curtains for this trip and the rest came together in a loud way. I was very conservative with my style on my first 2 trips. It lacked color and wasn't as fun. It's a fun little boho wagon now. Haha
I LOVE THIS!! I’m also a Tennessean! Southeast Tennessee born and bred! Your little camper is so adorable, it makes me wanna crochet you some cute accessories !! New subber.
I Worked for UHaul during the time these were rented. A LOT of enginerring went into the manufacture of these as well as all of the UHaul equipment. There was NO AC in these units at that time and they could really get warm inside in the Sun Shine. You really got a buy when you found this unit..
Thank you for all of that info! You can tell a lot of great engineering went into these! They are amazing units! I'm lucky to have it!

Love your camper!! Been binge watching from Cape Town South Africa ❤
Thank you! It's my favorite. It's my teeny tiny home for the road. It's basic with a maximalist style. It makes me appreciate everything I have at my brick and mortar home so much more...
I worked at the Tallahassee, Fl. U-haul for a few months in 1987. They had one of these U-haul minicampers, and a U-haul small aluminum boat/trailer. Neither ever got rented while I worked there. 😒
Thanks so much for sharing that! Yeah, I think U-Haul was waaaay ahead of their time with this one. That's my belief as to why they probably sold them out. They streamlined their business to become more profitable with moving equipment instead.
That’s fantastic and perfect for me and my travels

Such a wonderful camper.

That’s nice. Just saw one on market place for $2000. But basically a shell. Don’t have the time to fix it up.
❤❤❤ they need to start making these again! With so many stealth camping and living in there vans this would be awesome 👏
Agreed! It is so fun! I've learned you cannot stealth camp in it though! It gets too much attention. Lol
I remember seeing these back in the 80s. I live in the Atlanta area. Interestingly I looked up 300 Peters Street and it's still a big U-Haul moving and storage facility. I am sure the storage part of the building is where these used to be made. Very cool! Also, I seem to remember these having basic little half-moon round hubcaps. I may be wrong.. I love how you have this one set up!
I think I have seen those hubcaps! I think that they were originally on there as well. I'm keeping an eye out for some when I get to restore it. I'm beating the heck out of it now, so it would be pointless with all the miles I've put in it to do a full restoration. In a few years when I get tired of traveling so much it will be a priority. Thanks for the info on the storage facility! Really cool stuff! Hope to see you down the road! 💛
Plastic fantastic

Awesome score...
A piece of nostalgia for sure. Great job on the aftermarket touches.
Consider beefing those tires to a meatier tread. The old rear taillight seals can be removed with a steel brush and replaced with a RTV gasket maker.
Thank you so much! Great advice! I actually did end up using RTV to rebuild the gaskets. When I took the taillights off you can see how it's one solid gasket that houses the lights and the seal. I strategically used the RTV to shape and adhere to the old gasket. The only other option was retrofitting the entire light system.
Cats interestingly have a texture assistance problem to manage their claws. I selected a couch, my first couch --- mistakes were made but since Ikea we could change out the cover and still save the couch... The fabric I selected was literally a bio attractant. Check that carpet, save this beauty, and allow your cat to climb trees for exercise and claw management free of charge.
He has 3 different scratching posts and is allowed to climb trees when they are available. He doesn't scratch the carpet and he allows me to clip his nails for him... He's really a good cat.
amazingly similar to the little "Honeymoon" camper my aunt and uncle had
How much was it?
I am 1,90 cm tall male and I don't know if I could fit nicely in there , but I like this a lot and it feels cozy . Throughout the video, I was imagining myself resting near a greek sea and while raining staying inside with the door open and a small tent above the doorway watching the sea and drinking cappuccino, while the bread I am baking fills the cabin and the surroundings with that special smell combined with the smell of wet soil. During night time, tv on playing in the background and cooking chicken with potatoes in this oven .
That is a beautiful dream! The only part of that is to figure out how to bake without an oven. That's one of the few things that this camper is not equipped with. If you had a hookup, you could plug in a toaster oven... Or put your chicken and potatoes in a Dutch oven. Either way, that's a gorgeous vision to have!
It looked cute and like a kind of cool idea until I saw the cat litter pan. Don't get me wrong I absolutely love cats I have one of them myself but no way would I be shut up in a small space like that with my cat and her cat litter pan, Pretty Litter or not! 😁
Understandable. It's not for everyone. I found the best litter that truly has no odor. I scoop it every day or 2. Good management of my cat's area makes for a healthy, happy experience for all of us. I wouldn't trade the experience of having him with me for a million dollars. He brought so many smiles to so many faces when people saw him on the leash or in the car or camper window. He's worth every small bit of judgement from others that don't understand why someone would want to travel with their cat in that small space. I totally understand your perspective, but I love having that little turd with me.
a beautiful little camper. Thanks for the room tour. You made a really good purchase.
Thank you! It's been amazing to travel the country with! 💛
Yes! You are BLESSED by God to have found this 😁❤. Does it have a frig? Heater? Lights?
I am so grateful for this little thing. It's changed my life!! It has an old ice box which was the refrigerator, I carry an ICECO refrigerator in my car. It does not have a heater, but it has lights... I have another more thorough video that pulls the camper apart to see things I didn't share in this video. Here's the link if you are interested.

3D printing could help with the bolts and the tail light trim.
That AC vent would need critter protection 😅
What a find. You are very lucky.
Thank you! Once I took the lens off it was all one big giant gasket that also houses the lights. It's not the average gasket and that's what makes the repair so challenging. I did use some RTV solution to rebuild the dry rotted portions of the gasket. It did okay, but will definitely need another round when I have more time. I am also part of the U-Haul owners group on FB. They have the 3-D printing design available, but since no one can get these exactly, it would need to be retrofitted. The retrofitted lights are still cute, but not the same.
As for the AC... I hardly get to use it, so those caps rarely come off, but agreed... Im not sure why one side has a screen and the other one doesn't. Beats me... But it is something to be aware of when I do have the opportunity to use it here and there.
Thanks for all of your suggestions! They are always helpful to get ideas for future repairs. 💛
You explained everything soooo well. You sold me. Thank you for sharing.
Of course! My pleasure! It's been so fun to travel the country with. 💛
I remember U-Haul having those. Never knew anyone renting one.
So cool! I would love to know how much they rented them for back in the day!
Are you worried about mold in between the fiberglass?
Not really. It stays pretty dry with the exception of the unnoticed leak. Once I repair the damage, that should take care of any mold issues with the wood in between the fiberglass. The epoxy filler will kill off any mold issues. I never got sick when I was traveling and felt the healthiest I ever have. It probably has less mold than an older house to be honest, plus you are living mostly outside with the exception of sleeping at night or bad weather.
I thought U-haul was a truck rental/moving company
I think this is the coolest little camper. The nostalgia is super cool!! I also never even knew these existed. Great find!! Enjoy!❤
Thank you so much! I absolutely love it! 💛
They sell a puttyy for RV windows that would be great for the tail light?
Thank you! I'll have to look into that. I was able to repair them somewhat with RTV Gasket Maker solution. It was messy, but it did the trick to fill in some of the major gaps.
Uhaul would make a fortune on these today. The retro vibes are on point too. Perfect colors.
Yes they would! And thank you so much!!! 💛
This is neat. Thanks
These are incredible. They should definitely bring them back. I'm seriously considering something like this for me and my wife in the coming years. I'd love to live in a bus or van
Uhaul Clearly would do well to start the camper program back up today
They would! Unfortunately, they sold the molds with no intention of ever restarting the program. They were way ahead of their time!
This is an amazing little camper, thank you for sharing this with us.
Thank you so much for watching! 💛
I would have got rid of the bunks and put a bathroom there and mini wash shower
It would probably function better as a dinette. The fiberglass is double hull and has built in storage where the retrofitted air-conditioning unit is and on the other side there is storage. The only standing room is in the center where my toilet is. Otherwise you'd have to cut away the existing fiberglass and modify that way. Then there is the logistics of carrying more water (which is extremely heavy btw) and puts unnecessary pressure on the axel. Just food for thought after having a ton of experience with this camper. They do have a 16ft VT Camper which is much more rare than this one with a bathroom included in the extra 3 ft of space. Great idea though, it just wouldn't fit for me on this camper.
that is a cool little camper. Thanks for sharing. I vaguely remember seeing them in the U-Haul rental store when I was a kid.
I worked for U-Haul back in the late 80's after high school and a friend and I took one of these on a 2 week fishing trip in PA. The camper was pretty cool at the time and the only downside I remember is that it drew allot of attention at campgrounds. We stayed in 2 different campgrounds and people where constantly stopping by wanting to see inside and check it out. They did not rent so well at the time and it was rare to see one at a campground so everyone wanted to take a look. Thanks for the trip down memory lane! :O)
That burner is awful close to your bunkbeds
It is, but it does not transfer heat. I monitor it closely when I cook. I also keep a fire extinguisher handy at all times.
💥!! (queefie's mind being blown...)
💛
I love that you have your cat out there with you. Looks well taken care of or restored. Good stuff!
Thank you so much! It's been so fun having both the camper and that little street cat with me on my travels. He puts so many smiles on so many faces! 💛 He's a good little travel buddy.
I’m so jealous. I’m headed in your opinion in looking for any kind of quick affordable tiny home. ✊
Well that is one of the coolest things I've ever seen... I can't believe they had solar technology in the mid 80's.
The tail light "gaskets" could be created with COSPLAY foam pieces. Loosen lens, dig out cracked pieces to form pattern, cut out with hobby/razor knife. Repeat.
Nice video! Might I recommend a wireless lav mic to make it easier to hear your speaking though? Mostly for when you're standing a ways from the camera.
Thank you! I actually just got one of those mics for Christmas as this was an older video. Thanks so much for the thoughtful suggestion. 💛
This is so cute and perfect ❤ I love that you have room for your cat he is definitely living it up 💙 it is really awesome to look at too just ADORABLE 💙💛❤💚💜
Hello fellow Tennessean. Nice camper.
Hi!!! Thank you so much! I'm getting a little Tennessee homesick. I'll be heading home soon. Hope to see you down the road!
This is very similar to the Canadian made Boler. Originally made in the 1970s in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
Take a drink every time she says "Facebook Marketplace"...
Cheers! 🍻
I'm about 11 months late to this video, but I just saw one of these campers a couple of weeks ago, here in Eugene, OR. How funny that this video popped up. These algorithims are reaching Skynet-level! 😂
Replacement of the axle is cheap n ridiculously easy to do ...I would get better tires also ...ok ...god bless n safe travels ❤️🇺🇲
I remember seeing these on the road. Like your Cat.
Actually had a U-Haul horse trailer growing up❤
