Child abuse should be taken way more seriously than it is. People have a terrible habit of dismissing victims with "well, the parents can raise them how they like, it's no one else's business"- doubly so if the abusive party is the mother. Narcotic and opioid abuse should also be taken way more seriously than it is, as it's ravaged poor communities in the US worse than, like, anything save maybe meth.
If Terry had been removed from the home and the mom been put in rehab, she might still be alive and he might have had a much better go of it all.

Not to sound like some incel or whatever, but I'm almost certain part of it was that he was male and the abuser was female.
It's just demonstrable that cases of female on male abuse (mother, partner, or otherwise) get less attention and get treated with less severity/urgency than if it were his father being abusive.
Overall though (as someone with an abuse background) my feelings are a bit torn given his conduct afterwards combined with the revisions made to his story are indicative of some dishonesty or at least omissions.
That's the biggest strength and curse of the justice system: it's primarily evidence based unless the defense or prosecution tries to appeal to emotion or some other factors (ie OJ, Casey Antony, Zimmerman, etc.), so when you have so little evidence outside of "I know him and he would never do this!" you're probably going to be found guilty just on the merit of being unable to create some reasonable doubt.

I can completely understand what Terry had gone through, because I was severely abused by a male family member who had these 2 “rules,” which were:
    1. If the younger child gets into trouble, then the older and younger child gets beaten; if the older child gets into trouble, then only they get beaten.
    2. If a child weighs over 100 lbs, then they can get hit like a man.
My younger sister would do EVERYTHING in her power to piss him off, and we were beaten almost on a daily basis. He had other “punishments,” but they’re too many to list. I can count on one hand how many times, in the 9 years living with him, that I caused “trouble.”
My sister weighed about 90-95 pounds, and I weighed about 105-110/115 pounds. So, I was beaten longer and harder than my sister.
There were many, many times that we had thought about taking our mom’s weapon and killing him, but we chickened out because of our mom. I have since forgiven him, because I didn’t want to continue being his “victim,” like my sister continues to be. I am a survivor of abuse.
I don’t think that Terry should’ve served any time, because of the physical, mental, emotional and psychological abuse that he endured at the hands of his so called mother. Laws NEED to change that starts holding agencies accountable for allowing a child to remain in the abusive home!

"All it takes is one bad day"
You can be a saint, and be a good samaritan all your life, but one day, because you had a shitty life and your abuser, pushed you to your breaking point, YOU become the issue, not the one that was mentally berating you, and destroying everything, tearing you down in the process.
I can relate sadly....me and my sister are currently in an abusive relationship with our narcissistic brother and we live under the same roof with our parents, Our parents are good people, but somehow, we got dealt a bad hand, we've been recording him for months, but we don't know if we're protected, it's not like it's in a bathroom, but the living room...
    Also, to quote your send-off:
"So there you have the story of the Pokemon Trainer who killed, and it's crazy to think that if he planned out the murder a little bit better, he probably would've gotten away with it"
This rubbed me the wrong way, the justice system/ CPS should have protected him, but ultimately failed him in this case, and yet, the phrasing here is treating him like someone who should have calculated his murder, but he was just a 16-year-old teen that just protected himself in self-defense, no one plans that...you made it out like he killed multiple people and I'm disappointed, I like your content....but the way that was phrased could have been done better.
Heck if you want phrase the title and the ending like this
Changing the title from "Pokémon's Most Notorious Killer" to "Pokémon's Most Notorious Self-Defense Case" and
"So there you have the story of the Pokemon Trainer who killed, and its crazy to think that if he planned out the murder a little bit better, he probably would've gotten away with it" to

Whats really fucked up is, in the eyes of american law, what he did doesn't qualify for the self defense plea. Thats because self defense has to be a DIRECT response to a threat against your life. What he was subjected to was an entire life of abuse and couldnt escape it. The entire reason this situation went the way it did was because you know his lawyer pressured him to give a version of events that gave that DIRECT threat needed to qualify for their plea. Because saying "i was being abused for a prolonged period of time, and without any legal way out of my situation, i took action to preserve my life that i felt was in chronic danger by my forced cohabitation with the deceased" would NOT fly and, as you can see by what happened to him in the end, its a case you wont win without your case being identical to a precedent that is favorable on you. I dont know a damn thing about wirher party, bur it just sounds like a lose lose situation and its tragic. Most people turning to drugs (alcohol is one) are doing so because something in this world is hurting them. I wonder what happened in his mothers life that resulted in what she thought was an acceptable way to raise a ND kid. Not as a way to excuse her actions, my parents treated me that way and its a wound im still trying to figure out how to heal. But just to understand that mentality. My mom gor sober and actuallt sat down with me and talked about it from her side, and it gave me a new lense to look at things through. He is never going to get that and maybe she didnt deserve that chance. The decision was made for both of them forever, though.

I feel so bad for him. My mother wasnt far from this. There was definitely potential for it to end this way. I once almost drove our car off the highway to a cliff, snapping out of it last second. These types of parents push you to your limits, make you feel like theres no way out. The courts failed him.

Legit feel bad for him. Constant beatings and abuse from his own mom, the police showed up on numerous occasions and did nothing, child protective services nowhere in sight despite how obvious the problems are, I don’t think he ever would have murdered someone if he wasn’t trapped with a monster his whole life.

He was given an out. It was set up for him to move out into alternative housing. He told them he didn't want to anymore and killed her a couple days later. He was mentally abused for sure, but never saw physical abuse. Terry is a true psychopath. He harmed animals as a toddler. I knew him as a child, I am only a few years older than he is. Saw it all, and even tried to get him help. By the time he was 5 years old I was saying he was going to kill someone one day, most likely his mother. He was not a gentle person as the people started saying after the murder. They all just felt guilty that they ignored him so they supported him. He will harm another person one day.

Sadly abused by a parent really leads to many health issues especially if their divorce. It doesn't matter if the abuse was physical or mental, it's still causing health issues to the kid, like hair loss at a young age, developing panic attacks due of constant verbal abuse, suicidal thinking and intentions. Some examples least on my experience with my older brother.

The fact that nobody did anything makes them just as bad as her.

God the justice system is so ass backwards.
A man can go over to another state with guns he isn't supposed to have, kill protesters but get off on self defense.
This guy killed his abusive mother in self defense and got prison time. He needs therapy, prison will only degrade his mental health.

Jacob Shoemaker is a real one. He’s got a good spirit and really did his best to look out for Terry.

13:21 I don't understand that last part where he says "if he planned out the murder better, maybe he would have gotten away with it" but wasn't the whole point that the situation wasn't planned and it was self defense? That last quote through me for a loop because if he's out of prison now didn't he get away with it? I don't think this kid is a murderer and the legal system royally fucked him and the sad reality is its never going to get better and police are always going to be like that. Life kinda sucks if you really think about it
