Many years ago my parents dropped me and my husband we were about 50 at the time. We walked from the castle to New Castle Upon Tyne, over many days. We walked along the coast and camped in a tiny tent. They have all pasted now. So just I am left with these special memories. I visited there last year with a friend during that really hot week we had in September, and the weather was glorious. I didnt go inside but we visited the coastline and went to Holy Island first, but visited Bamburgh on the way back - its stunning, the beach is so amazing, it was the best day of the holiday truth be told - that whole coastline is stunning. This is somewhere that I have always wanted to visit and want to even more now. I had no idea of what is inside it, I thought it was a ruin, and I am so glad to see that it was restored. I'm in two minds about the displays, they are interesting in their own right, but I take your point of it not feeling quite right. I'm glad that you showed us round all the same Lucy. Hopefully you can visit Cragside one day, that looked great Have a good week too x
You must go someday, it's very beautiful and there is a lot to look at inside the castle; all behind glass and museum like so wouldn't have been much fun to watch on here. I'll never forget seeing the castle for the first time over the hill, will stay in my mind forever!
My late husband and I visited Northumberland many times and loved Bamburgh but never went inside the castle we just admired it from the beautiful beach ! We did visit Cragside however and found it really interesting and in lovely area , your ending was hilarious 😂❤
I think I should have stayed on the beach, I didn't want to leave that beach and that gorgeous fresh air on my face! I will return to see cragside. It's an itch I really need to scratch now Judith!
I love Bamburgh Castle, we used to visit it lots. You must take time and visit Holy Island as it is beautiful too and the atmosphere is amazing. Thanks for another great video 😍
The ceiling is outstanding, mad to think I've been thinking about a ceiling a lot but I have this one 😅 I'll visit any historical property to be honest but I always prefer the ones that represent the people I know. Although Hampton court is my guilty pleasure ...
We visited Bamburgh earlier in the year and felt similarly about it - started watched The Lost Kingdom after visiting and are really enjoying it - it’s better than GOT - Craigside is a must you will have to go back 😊
I'm really regretting my choices to be honest, I think Bamburgh would have made the same impact on me from the beach. I will check out The Last Kingdom, my Mom really rated it - I am just really fussy about tv (really low attention span!)
I agree that the inside is perhaps a bit overdone with collections, but I suppose they have to make up for the fact no one actually knows exactly what it would have looked like and it needs to make a lot of money to pay for the upkeep! I like ruins too, and kitchens! Probably where I would have been if I had lived there! I haven’t soon the films but I would recommend the books - films are often a disappointment when you’ve read them first . Glad you got to Beamish , I knew you’d love it . The fifties section was only being built when we last went. My favourites were the farms and the old miners cottages. The castle on Lindisfarne is great- made into a dwelling again, but anEdwin Lutyens little masterpiece with a little garden by Gertrude Jekyll! Happy travelling and thanks for sharing them with us! X
Thank you! I was gutted not to get to lindesfarne, the tide times didn't work for me on the day, it's a place I've always wanted to go. I guess I like ruins is because I can make my own picture up .. just the same as what they did in the castle. I loved Beamish, it blew my little mind!
Hellooooooo Wow no wonder people go there to test their eyesight 🙂 Full of history and history I never learnt, is why I watch you, full of information I need to know 🙂 Crest of a wave got ya 😂
Thanks Tom! Really appreciate that! I learn something new most weeks in my research too so it's win win. That rouge wave REALLY got me .. very bracing!
You know you're getting older when...you look at magnificent rooms like that, and your first thought is, 'I bet those single glazed metal windows are freezing in winter', and 'Just open fires to heat a room that tall?'. I could see said Lord only using that place for summer gatherings.
Ooh Bebbanburg! I am going to enjoy this one. I am such a fan of Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Chronicles novels about Uhtred and Bebbanburg. Not the dreadful TV series though. Too much was changed. Loved the outtake. I was saying "move! move now! it's coming for you!"
I knew of the Netflix series but was always put off by the FIVE Seasons PLUS a movie! Years ago, I had devoured all Bernard Cornwell's SHARPE novels, but somehow never started on the Saxon batch. However, due to all the (mostly) positive comments on here, I "bit the bullet" - and now of course, I can't stop binge-watching this show!!! And Julia, you're absolutely right - the German lead is Very Appealing :)) RjB
The Last Kingdom is riveting. I hate blood and guts but this series good grief I binge watched it. If you get a chance I think you may enjoy it. I tried to watch Game of Thrones and couldn't make head nor tail. Not a patch on The Last Kingdom. Thanks for this visit, again a place that I could easily wander around, as you say the outside soaking up the history. The museum - dungeon etc would be there to get the visitors/tourists in. It really depends on expectations and reasons for going. Lol visualising Viking long boats would be chilling enough for me, even though I have a drop of their blood in me =-) Take care as always.
I think I must have a drop of their blood in me too, a few years ago I did one of those DNA tests, I couldn't resist and I had an above average amount of Scandinavian DNA and loads of German too - no one really knows where it has come from but I can only think it must be that! I will check out the Last Kingdom, I believe there are 5 seasons now so that's a long of binging to do - and that's no issue for me!! Love a good series to get into. I've just finished The Serpent Queen so good timing!
@@throughlucyslens The Last Kingdom's characters are loosely based on people in history. The settings are quite authentic. I just loved the whole 'atmosphere' even though it was ruthless but that was what it seemed to be at times in the times.
A trilogy that I also have reread a few times is by Stephen Lawhead - Hood, Scarlet and Tuck. I bet you can guess the period by the title names. =-) A different slant on the famous outlaw based in, you would never guess -Wales.
A beautiful building with tonnes of history but I was thinking “why all the inappropriate tat” Stuff with no meaning or relevance with the castle at all. I still enjoyed every minute of this though. I bet this place will still be standing in another 1600 years. My parents were up that way a few years ago when they were filming for Transformers. My mum sent me a photo (zoomed and really grainy 😂) of the film crews stuff that was dotted around it. I’m going to send my dad this video. Thank you Lucy. Please go to Cragside 😁😁
Made me chuckle about the photos - my Mom sends me really sweet photos of things I will like sometimes and I can barely make them out! Absolutely it will still be standing - majestic beast it is! Glad you enjoyed the video despite all the "stuff" I just don't have the patience to sift through it all and maybe I have no taste as it does nothing for me!
@@throughlucyslens It really is a majestic beast, the place is huge and very imposing. I bet those Vikings had their work cut out to gain entry haha. I’d love to fly my drone over it and get Ariel shots. Ironically I was up in the north east today (I deliver all over the country with my job) Pup is looking not so pup like now 😂
@@Dan23_7 Yes he's 8 months now and looking like a little man ,.. he's off for his chop chop tomorrow as he's getting very interested in nether regions poor little thing!! Bamburgh is a no drone zone - how annoying is that? I really really want to get and learn to fly a drone but I have this terrible idea I would crash it on first flight and waste all that money!
@@throughlucyslens 8 months blimey !! Less stress for them once their “boys” are off, Oh he’ll be sulking with you for a few days too 😂 Killjoys !!! If there’s no airports near I don’t see what the problem is but hey ho. Start off really cheap, my first cost £40 and it got me learning the basics, I crashed that one because I took it out in wind too strong and it blew away and hit a house 😂😂 I’m no fancy flier now either but the one I have now is very stable and has a brilliant camera on it.
I think they might do RAF training around the coast, £40 is a good price! Didn't even know they came that reasonable. I've always wanted to learn to fly a plane so maybe I could fly a drone? 😅
Well I guess it's been continued to be built over 1400 years which is pretty wild really! From a wooden structure to what we see today, Armstrong started the renovations in 1894 and passed away in 1900 but he saw it completed I believe so the renovations were quite quick really.
I'm kicking myself I didn't you know. I pretty much flipped a coin, I'll never forget those views and the feeling but I think I would have preferred that property x
Hi Lucy, great video! I gave you a like when you posted a couple of days ago, am only commenting now , I have a bit of time. Agree with you, the castle and the grounds outside are so much nicer than what’s inside of it. My opinion. I get it why the family needs to stage the interior, more visitors, more money for the upkeep . I watched a few episodes of The Last Kingdom the other night…….meh, too violent for me. I appreciate British detective shows like Vera or A Touch of Frost that will show a snippet of blood and gore but give its audience the chance to solve the crime on their own. Can’t wait for your next video…have fun! ox💕🇺🇸
Ohh interesting. I haven't started to watch it but I don't get on with violence either, it's a cosy autumn day here so I've been watching call the midwife all day 😅
@@throughlucyslens Chummy! Yes yes yes! A really cool n wonderful character. Nurse crane would have gotten on my nerves if I was working with her. 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 She was excellent though! 👏🏻👏🏻

A shame to hear about Arundel castle as it's somewhere I've always wanted to go .. but I can strike that off now 😂 Warwick castle is unfortunately the same!
If you like adventure stories set in Anglo-Saxon times with Vikings thrown in, The Last Kingdom is worth a watch. I enjoyed it. As to its historical accuracy, it wasn't too glaring in its inaccuracies.
I am going to check it out. Loads of people have said it is good and they must have a point! My Mom loves it too and we usually have similar tastes. The books have been recommended too.. going to keep me busy :)
I like the way this content maker takes the time to pan slowly around what is being shown. It makes the viewer feel they are there. I also like that there isnt the constant drone of background music over the video. I dont understand why other videos have muzac playing over the narrative, its distracting and annoying.
Thank you so much, "Muzak" is my pet hate! If it adds impact or tells a story fine but using it to fill a gap drives me mad, what's wrong with quiet and contemplation? - adding more noise to a noisy world. I glad you appreciate it as it's a purposeful "feature" of my content. I think people do it because it's the done thing but not for me (cor, haven't I gone on 😂😂😂)
Totally get the "exhibition vibe" can be disappointing, always wish certain historical places were more "lived in original" less exhibition but a huge & tough conundrum for historical sites. One place you may love is the magical Snowshill Manor & Gardens. Snowshill is the unconventional home of the eccentric Charles Wade, who delighted in creating a stage for his life and passions (collections). Quirky rather than exhibition feel. Set in gorgeous lands with live sheep in the fields surrounding the tea garden! Staff are great chatty & helpful down-to-earth. Wade travelled the world buying inventions & artefacts. The vibe is so strong he used every space to show off his collections but retains a homely yet magical atmosphere. Snowshill, near Broadway, Gloucestershire, WR12 7JU
Hey! I do love it there, it's one of my favourite places in the world - I made a video about it that's already on here - a while ago now though. I feel like they get collecting right there, because they tell his story and there's a connection to every single thing, it almost speaks to you out the walls - and yes! What a vibe!
I felt a bit the same at Warwick castle to be honest. Absolutely stunning outside and some interesting stuff but on the whole it had a bit of a money grabbing theme park vibe I think this is mostly due to the company that own it which I won't name but it's just gone down the London dungeon route a bit which I didnt feel was that authentic in places. I completely understand that costs are involved and they are massively expensive to upkeep.
I haven't been to Warwick castle since it's been taken over by wizards (get it? 😅) when I was a kid it was just a huge ruin with an absolutely terrible dungeons and the occasional reenactment group doing a joust. I like kenilworth up the road, I adore the Dudley / Elizabeth connection x
I also loved the nature and views more but that's maybe because I'm not a great fan of this sort of castles and the era they were build in. But I enjoyed the video nonetheless and appreciate the sacrifices you make for us (your wet feet). 😂
Feet .. legs .. socks! It was so funny though! Yeah I am not really a castles person either, which is weird as I love history so much, I should educate myself more about very early history really!
Dear Lucy, At anytime during your research, do you recall if there was a law passed in the 1960s that prescribed school children must visit Bamburgh Castle? Did said law contain subsections administering to the requirement that Barry the Drinker must sit on your packed lunch, have a child vomit on you, arrive on the wettest, coldest summer's day on record in only a T shirt and shorts. And was it really necessary to stipulate there must be no toilet facilities on the coach, when you have been assigned the seat next to Barry the Drinker, who has been working his way through the dozen bottles of Barr's pop he has smuggled aboard? (I am asking for a friend).
😂😂😂😂 this sounds like Toms law to me! (Same story with Weston-super-mare when you are a Brummie kid, 5 hours to get there, 5 hours to get back, 1 hour looking at a muddy estuary and several rivers of vomit commanding court coming down the middle of the coach!)
I'm afraid I don't know why, I have looked the memorial up and it's a replacement funded by the War Memorials Trust in 2021 - they might have some more information about it.
There is so much lies about history...we dont know the truth any more. The worst thing that happened in England was the breakup of the catholic church by Henry VIII. England was never the same since.
Absolutely agree with you. History is far more important. Tell the stories of all those that have gone before us. In the end all the collections are just “ things” someone has taken a like to. Thanks Stephen! Always lovely to hear from you, are you still planning to visit Birmingham? ❤️
Wonderful that it's been restored. The fact that it is a part of our early Christian heritage, it's well worth preserving.
Absolutely, I wish I had time to get over to Lindersfarne but the tides were all wrong unfortunately- one day I will!
Stunningly beautiful!❤️
Thank you, it's wonderful isn't it? I'll always remember that view x
I was so sad the tide times didn't work to visit the island - I was really looking forward to it but it will be there for me next time x
Holy cow, that teak ceiling!! Gorgeous. Great video Lucy and thanks for your review. I also prefer visiting the spots where normal people lived.
The ceiling is outstanding, mad to think I've been thinking about a ceiling a lot but I have this one 😅 I'll visit any historical property to be honest but I always prefer the ones that represent the people I know. Although Hampton court is my guilty pleasure ...
Interesting history😊
Thank you! Appreciate it a lot :)
Love Bamburgh castle ❤
Such a majestic building. I gasped when I saw it come over the brow of the hill on the drive!
❤
Hellooooooo
Wow no wonder people go there to test their eyesight 🙂
Full of history and history I never learnt, is why I watch you, full of information I need to know 🙂
Crest of a wave got ya 😂
I have similar thoughts! I thought it must be so noisy living there, banging and creaking which would totally get on my nerves! 😂
😅😅😅 it totally got me too!
Watch The Last Kingdom!!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Got it! I'll make time :)
Yes. Do try The Last Kingdom and see what you think. I really enjoyed it. The German lead actor is rather nice!
hahah, that's funny. My Mom said the same!
You caught the mood of the place well
thanks Annette, very kind of you :)
My cousin got married here last year- in the king's hall!
Lovely video, I didn't get to see much of the castle of itself 😅
Wow!!! Gosh that must have been something else!! I did see they did weddings in there - you would certainly feel like royalty for the day!
A beautiful building with tonnes of history but I was thinking “why all the inappropriate tat”
Stuff with no meaning or relevance with the castle at all.
Ironically I was up in the north east today (I deliver all over the country with my job)
Pup is looking not so pup like now 😂
@@Dan23_7 Yes he's 8 months now and looking like a little man ,.. he's off for his chop chop tomorrow as he's getting very interested in nether regions poor little thing!! Bamburgh is a no drone zone - how annoying is that? I really really want to get and learn to fly a drone but I have this terrible idea I would crash it on first flight and waste all that money!
@@throughlucyslens 8 months blimey !! Less stress for them once their “boys” are off, Oh he’ll be sulking with you for a few days too 😂
Killjoys !!! If there’s no airports near I don’t see what the problem is but hey ho.
Start off really cheap, my first cost £40 and it got me learning the basics, I crashed that one because I took it out in wind too strong and it blew away and hit a house 😂😂
I’m no fancy flier now either but the one I have now is very stable and has a brilliant camera on it.
I think they might do RAF training around the coast, £40 is a good price! Didn't even know they came that reasonable. I've always wanted to learn to fly a plane so maybe I could fly a drone? 😅
Thanks Lucy - magnificent castle built on a magnificent site. It’s huge, wonder how long it took to build it??
Well I guess it's been continued to be built over 1400 years which is pretty wild really! From a wooden structure to what we see today, Armstrong started the renovations in 1894 and passed away in 1900 but he saw it completed I believe so the renovations were quite quick really.
Please do go to Cragside - it is one of the best properties I have ever visited. I'm sure you would have loved it. x
I'm kicking myself I didn't you know. I pretty much flipped a coin, I'll never forget those views and the feeling but I think I would have preferred that property x
Enjoyable video, as always. You should watch 'The Last Kingdom' - one of the best things I've seen on TV!
Thank you! A couple of people have said I should watch it - I'll add it to my list .. the problem is once I start something I can't stop 😂
I haven't started to watch it but I don't get on with violence either, it's a cosy autumn day here so I've been watching call the midwife all day 😅
@@throughlucyslens I LOVE call the midwife! Have seen all of them…soon another season I believe. Keep watching! Trixie is my fave character! 📺🍿👀
I love nurse crane 😅 I've been back on the early ones today. I love Chummy too!
@@throughlucyslens Chummy! Yes yes yes! A really cool n wonderful character. Nurse crane would have gotten on my nerves if I was working with her. 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 She was excellent though! 👏🏻👏🏻
Think you'd love Bodium Castle and hate Arundal Castle, as a heads up!! What a revolutionary when it comes to renewable power sources though. Fascinating.
@@throughlucyslens Oh I'll have to hunt your channel for that video! Love that place.
Haha yes indeed the 'wizards' 😁. Ooh ok if im over that way will try and go there. X
Hey Lucy, may I ask why the memorial to the first world war is from 1914 - 1919?
I'm afraid I don't know why, I have looked the memorial up and it's a replacement funded by the War Memorials Trust in 2021 - they might have some more information about it.
I don’t mind the Last Kingdom, but wouldn’t say it’s must watch or anything
Mom loves it, I don't like game of thrones or anything like that so I didn't think it would be for me x
@@throughlucyslensyeah, I wouldn’t think it’d be for you. I don’t like GoT either
I tried the first one and it was so violent I was like .. Naghr!
@@throughlucyslens I actually think you might like it. Give it a go.
There is so much lies about history...we dont know the truth any more. The worst thing that happened in England was the breakup of the catholic church by Henry VIII. England was never the same since.
Interestingly I went to a recreation of a pre-reformation church on Monday - it was mindblowingly amazing!
