    Thank you for posting this. I lost my instruction card and could not figure out for the life of me how to use this thing again. Yay old age!

    I have one of these and it does a good job as long as you want to put in the time. Takes a while to get a good result. Also you need to strop afterwards

    Seems a small vice to hold the Blade holder would make the job go faster.

    IMPORTANT: when you clamp the blade in place, it's not necessarily going to be in there evenly. It's very easy for the blade to lean more to one direction than the other. If you go through and sharpen it like that, you're going to have asymmetrical angles: one side will have a shaper angle than the other. The result will be that it doesn't cut well for very long. This is especially true with an acute angle, you'll start to get one side to fold ever so slightly with use and it won't handle slicing jobs very long before the material you're trying to cut will just slide back and forth over an otherwise very sharp end.
    To have a better chance of having the blade clamped evenly is to adjust the bottom part of the clamp so that when the blade is locked in, the gap between the two plates are even the whole way. If you don't do this, the gap will be wide at the top where the blade is clamped, and will narrow towards the bottom. You don't want to see an angle there you want them parallel.

    I know its super cheap, but I couldn't afford a wicked edge(what I really wanted) but this system is pretty amazing for the price!

    The one thing I don’t enjoy in this system is the clamp sometimes will clamp uneven which would cause a smaller angle on one side of the blade than the other. I think the jaws on the clamp should just be smooth instead of have the little step for the back of the blade to seat in. Plus most of my knives have a bevel on the back of the blade which makes it hard to clamp it evenly.

      Electrical tape on the pad of the clamp helps.

    Great job man very good video in details , I just want to know when do you use blue stone, after red or ... Thanks

      Thanks! You usually want to start with Course grit, then Medium, and finish with Fine. If you are just touching up an edge that isn't too bad you can skip to Medium or Fine. You will get a feel for which stone you need first with some practice.

    How would I sharpen scissors with this kit?

    I love the smith's system. I turned my BK-2 into a knife that could shave the hair of my arm.

    The reason there are 2 different angles is you sharpen at 20 Deg always , and then give the edge a few strokes at 25 so the very edge is like that of a Chisel , this way you clean any wire edge off.

    Are you putting pressure on the down stroke or up stroke or both?

    • @ModernSurvivalists
      @ModernSurvivalists  2 года назад

      I typically use medium pressure on the cutting stroke, with a none to very light on backstroke.

      I know this comment is old but I had a lot of trouble using it at first. When I started using it as shown it got my knife razor sharp. Not as sharp as say an expert old timer on a wet stone, but plenty sharp to shave and do any task I would ever ask of my knife.

  • @Clare.1985
    @Clare.1985 2 года назад

    Unless repairing a chip or re profiling you only go on one side as many times as are necessary to create a bur on the opposing side. You count the number of strokes used to get there and repeat on the other side again checking for a bur. Once you've done that you've reached the appex and switch stone grits to refine the bur. The more refined the smoother the edge. Using this method without checking for a bur will only remove way more material than necessary and Unless appex has been reached on both sides you'll never have a truly sharp knife.

    My old 5 stone Lansky is officially dead and was gonna pick up a new one but seen this at Lowes. I tried doing my Buck and wow what a piece of SHI.... Junk this is. I repacked it up and took it back for a refund. Pulled out a set of hand stones to fix it.

      Can you resurface Lanksy stones to breathe some more life into them?

    • @EJW988
      @EJW988 2 года назад +1

      @@ModernSurvivalists Yes, you can buy a Norton Flattening Stone I use these on all my wet stones. Other methods are to use some secured sandpaper to a granite surface plate. You can also use .50" glass as a surface plate which is alot cheaper then granite. I suggest using the Norton flattening stones they have a series of grooves for the removed materials. The have different sizes that will run you from $30 - $70. Taking care of your tools will help take care of your checkbook!!!
