    Thank you ! Finally a real video of how to actually use this kit. I just got a used kit on ebay which had no instructions with it. Now I can try it on my knives. Nice job !

    I have the coarse, fine, and triangle edge shapers (for serrations) in the lesser kit. But I learned 2 things useful: Get the entire blade profiled with the coarse shaper all the way to the tip (which takes some careful work). Second, keep the shaper guide rod pressing on the bottom of the guide slot for uniformity. No circular motions needed.... W shaped movements... and the closer the shaper is to the guide hole, the more steady it is. Go for smooth and uniform.... not speed. Speed will come with practice. You can also drape a small piece of very fine abrasive paper (maybe 800 grit) over a shaper to finish up ... to use the shaper to carry the paper as you slick the blade to very sharp. Pinch the paper around the flat surface edges.... and BE Careful! You are sharpening an open knife.
    You can get a very fine white stone in the yellow plastic holder by Lansky for about $10. Screw the Smith's guide rod just a few turns into it instead of the thumb screw. Then finish off the sharp edge.

    Yeah, the Magnum XL grind. Feel the difference. It’s the best. The more the merrier.

    This helped a lot, my new knifes edge was at 30° and I brought it down to 25 and not its sharp enough to shave with. I can't thank you enough

      tyler hall You are most welcome. My knives are so sharp that I don't let anyone else use them for fear of them misusing them (safety) or damaging the edge. LOL Thanks for watching.

    I have had one of these for quite some time. it is freaking great. if you're looking for something comparable to a razor blade, run it up and down a full grain leather belt after both stones are used. takes just a minute on either side and will significantly increase the sharpness of any blade you're using. be warned: it will be insanely sharp.

      +John G I will do this next time I sharpen my knife. Thanks for the information.

    Lol. The whole point of the system is to go up and down, hence why each stone is about 3 inches. You get a lot more done going up and down rather than side to side. You aren’t really achieving much going side to side. It’s in the directions.

    Thanks for this - I have this exact kit, didn't have directions, so I wasn't sure how to use it.
    I have a strop for my wood carving knife, should I follow up with that on my folding knives, too?

    I like the KME sharpening system myself. But this would be ok in the field as a touch up. Why do you swipe the edge sideways instead of up and down tho. You are trying to sharpen against the steel grain direction. You might find it works much better with the steel.

    Could you use this for a karambit blade

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  7 лет назад +3

      I can not see why you would not be able to use it on a karambit blade. Thanks.

  • @motomark9736
    @motomark9736 4 года назад

    Your not using it correct you need more back and forth motion not long like you did it

  • @ethans.4929
    @ethans.4929 6 лет назад +2

    if you look at the stones you can tell they’re designed to go up and down by the grain. I don’t know what you think you’re accomplishing going side by side. You’re not really doing much

      fishes74 You Sir are blessed. I never knew my Grandfathers and my Dad was a merchant marine who died when I was a young boy. I had to figure this stuff out on my own. To me it was an original idea. God blesses us in the strangest ways. Thanks for watching and sharing.
