  • I'm talking about a knife sharpening system I've had for a long time. I've been meaning to make a video about it but never did until I saw the video by "beactivelife" ( / beactivelife ) and his new knife sharpener. His sharpener is more compact than my system is :-}

    Excellent coverage on this knife set! I've had this exact knife set for years, but never knew what I was doing with it. Watching your video answered all of my questions and i've already sharpened 3. Eyeing my wife's Wustoffs!!

    Awesome videos. Thanks for showing me just how easy the system is to use. I've had it for a while now and never knew how to properly use it. I just sharpened my knife while watching your video and it's now RAZOR sharp. Thanks again.

    To flatten the Arkansas stone get some glass and fine diamond grit, apply some oil to the diamond grit and smear some on the glass, rub your stone across it and it should flatten out after a while

    Good observational skills Richard. Those bits are really great. I call them "Unibits"....I think that when they first came out onto the market that that was their name....LOL, and I've called them that ever since. I've got several of them, different sizes and step patterns. Thanks for watching and also thanks for taking the time to comment. Take Care my friend :-))

    Good sharening systen Ray.
    I still think you should strop your knives along the leather. That way you are taken away any small pices of metal at molecular level. You can't see that fine with a hand magnifier. That way your knife will be sharper and stay sharper for longer. I think! hope I'm right! Hi
    All the best
    Sandy

    what you can do for that stone that dished out on you is take it out in the concreat and flatten it back out just make sure its a finer mesh though or you can take like a 80 grit piece of sandpaper on a palm sander and do it like that just make sure to take it up to like at least 600 grit to take that really deep scratches out of it well i hope this helps you

    I’m just learning. I bought this system today and watching vids, everyone has their own way 2 use the system. The best vid I’ve seen is a guy saying 2 use a ‘W’ motion with your strokes pre the instructions. He said that he tested with different strokes because he wasn’t getting the edge that he wanted using strokes he use with stones. He said using the ‘W’ strokes certainly makes a difference. Is there any truth to this? I cant seem to get that razor edge that everyone keeps talking about.

  • @SurviveN2
    @SurviveN2  12 лет назад

    LOL....like I said at the end of the video, I'm not concerned with the knife being able to cut paper in the woods, I want it to be able to cut wood. If I want to cut paper, I'll use scissors ;-)) Thanks for watching and also thanks for taking the time to comment. Take Care :-))

    I’m a little confused. Everything I have read in sharpening has said you must have equal amount of strokes on each side to create an edge. How on earth cld you do that with the way he is sharpening? I bought this sharpener the other day bc I am having a hard time getting a burr on a wet stone. Even bought a ken onion work sharp and the same thing. I do not know what it is I’m missing here. But making sure you had equal strokes was paramount I had thought

    I've never tried using a "W" pattern to sharpen with. I also haven't been able to get a razor sharp edge with this system. I use a ceramic "V" sharpener to get them to razor sharp for the final strokes. You can see the system in my "Sharpening System Bag" video. I hope this helps ya :-} Thanks for watching and also thanks for taking the time to comment. Take Care :-))

    Thanks for the video! I have had this set for a few years and my brother showed me how to use it but I forgot. This video was just what I needed. I do have a small eagle beak knife that needs to be sharpened. Any tips on what stone to use and for that tiny curved blade?
    Thanks :)

    • @SurviveN2
      @SurviveN2  8 лет назад

      Thanks for your kind comment Sara, and also thanks for watching too ;-)) The type of stone to use would depend on just how dull the blade is and how much metal you'll be needing to take off to start to get an edge back on it ;-)) I would not go straight to the course stone unless you really have to. I have ceramic rods and try to use them to put edges back on a dull knife before I resort to sharping stones. Usually the ceramic rods will do the trick, I think they are a Smith's product also. Search my videos for "Sharpening" and you'll find 4 other videos beside this one and you can see what I'm using. IMO.....The size and/or shape of a blade really doesn't govern what texture of stone to use, it's how dull the knife edge is that governs what texture of stone to use. I hope this helps with your questions. Take Care :-))
