Desi Arnaz was an innovator. He changed the way tv shows were filmed. He insisted on using three cameras whereas before I Love Lucy, shows were filmed with only one camera.

Desi might be the most underrated performer in the history of television. His work on "Lucy" both in front and behind the camera was unparalled. Lucy received most of the accolades but without Desi, the show would not be the timeless classic that it became. His guest hosting on SNL only reinforced his comedic talent. A charming and brilliant man.

@@ganglabesh Family was very rich and had to flee Cuba when Castro came to power. Arrived with only a nominal fee in his pocket. Filmed across the street from MGM, known as David Selznick studios, owned by Howard Hughes, RKO, Desilu made, Make Room for Daddy , Star Trek, I Love Lucy, Andy Griffith and many more. It is still there, I worked about a mile from it for 5 years now called Culver Studio. Now across from Sony Pictures. Gone with the Wind, although made in several locations, all the area in front of us used to be backlots and I used to meet people working in the area who had worked on backlots as kids.

***** Yes, I know. It reminds of that time in I Love Lucy when he did an Irish accent for one of his performances. But, I have to say that his own Spanish accent was the best! Ay-yai-yai-yai! hahahaha!

Apparently, he was catnip to women. You can see that when his name was announced, and both women immediately started touching up their hair, lol. “Being The Ricardos” on Amazon Prime is brilliant. Javier Bardem gets Desi’s charm, energy, humor and intelligence perfectly. He literally embodies him. Nicole Kidman does the same as Lucy.

Desi's appearance on What's My Line is a gem for me. He did such a good job fooling most of the panel. I can't figure out how the lady on the panel (I didn't catch her name) figured out that it was him. He was so hilarious! I couldn't stop laughing! Bravo!😊🤣👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

I always thought he never got the credit or recognition he deserved, He had so much talent and brains, such a kind generous big-hearted man, and he gave most of the credit to Lucy. She was strong and smart as well. What an amazing team they were. I am sure so happy to have grown up with their show, most programs on T.V are not funny or as classy as the I love Lucy show. Most Television today is trash and nonsubstance. I miss the good old shows,

These people are what true clean comedy is all about. By now we've heard about the Arnaz family problems, but they always acted graciously towards one another after their marriage. At some time or another we all have family problems. I've heard it later stated they stayed together not only for their show, but for their children, and the rest of their fans. Compare that with today's Hollywood which IS a totally different entity. Thank You Claudia for these pieces of comedic gold. Old B&W television never looked so good. Read this while you still can because we are next on RUclips's radar. Praise The Lord and Godspeed to you all - James 5:13!!

The comedy might have been clean, but Arnaz''s private life was not. He was NOT what you would call a reliable family man. He was famous for his affairs and his heavy drinking. It was a major humiliation for Lucille Ball. Eventually, she couldn't take it, anymore. They stayed friends, and he did care for her in his own way, but he was a horrible husband. He was nothing like the character he played in I Love Lucy, except that he was a band leader and they WERE married at the time, but that's it. He was very intelligent. He worked AND played hard. HOWEVER, Lucille Ball was the level-headed, reliable one--the exact opposite of the show.

OK, first of all, it was the 1950s if the show wasn't, squeeky clean, it wouldn't have made it on the screen.

I had always heard negative comments as a child up to my 20s, kinda didn't want to like her, but like you, i very much enjoyed watching her.As time passed i saw more and more interviews and since learned she really was a nice lady. She and Ethel had a blast doing 3 separate long running "HIT" shows, and she has always credited the success of I LOVE LUCY to Desi. I guess it too be quite a chore, to spend as many yrs. together as she did w/ethel and not be friends. I love Lucy!

I was also a product of the 1970's watching television and the comedic zest and physical comedy that these shows had was still very much appreciated by the mind of a child some 20 years later. Just timeless! It was clean humor, not racy, vulgar or edgy...there was always a bit of suspense wondering what mischief the red head was going to get into next. My family also migrated to the States from Cuba and I guess this show helped us with our English as well.

This was from November 9th, 1952, when "I Love Lucy" was in its second season. Before that show, Arnaz was mainly known as a bandleader and singer.
While the setting for "I Love Lucy" was New York City, the show was filmed in Hollywood. This was a rarity in 1951, when most shows were filmed in New York. Sponsors wanted the higher-quality (i.e. live) broadcasts to air in the much more lucrative East Coast markets, while then-lesser-areas on the West Coast had to settle for lower-quality kinescope. Ball and Arnaz insisted on the show being filmed in Hollywood in front of a live studio audience, all novel ideas at the time. They eventually got their way, and a legendary series was born.
