My family also migrated to the States from Cuba and I guess this show helped us with our English as well.
This was from November 9th, 1952, when "I Love Lucy" was in its second season. Before that show, Arnaz was mainly known as a bandleader and singer. While the setting for "I Love Lucy" was New York City, the show was filmed in Hollywood. This was a rarity in 1951, when most shows were filmed in New York. Sponsors wanted the higher-quality (i.e. live) broadcasts to air in the much more lucrative East Coast markets, while then-lesser-areas on the West Coast had to settle for lower-quality kinescope. Ball and Arnaz insisted on the show being filmed in Hollywood in front of a live studio audience, all novel ideas at the time. They eventually got their way, and a legendary series was born.
